Old railway platform seats and seating from boats have been put to use in the past, while DIY enthusiasts have constructed seats featuring little more than a short piece of scaffolding plank resting on two neat piles of old bricks. Funky benches have been made using old tyres at either end supporting seats of painted scaffolding planks. If you live near the sea, explore the beach to search for large pieces of driftwood, or shells out of which you could make a feature mosaic to hang on your house wall. Mosaics and patterns can also be made out of pebbles or broken coloured tiles arranged Roman style. Fallen logs can be used to edge paths, while those on a budget may be more inclined to go for local gravel. Eye-catching containers can be made out of anything you may otherwise dump, from old food cans painted with brightly coloured weather-resistant paint, to sinks which can house a myriad of rock plants, and teapots, mugs and rusty buckets with holes drilled in the bottom which can be planted up and strategically placed to brighten up the scene. 20

stained, varnished and lined with black plastic, while broken pots can be used for a display of rock plants such as sempervivums, surrounded by broken bits of pot. Wine aficionados who are lucky enough to have had their wine delivered in wooden boxes with lovely embossed logos should consider growing salad crops in them. See if your local wine merchant might have any boxes spare and preserve the wood with Danish oil to weatherproof it as well as drilling holes in the base for drainage. Port boxes can also act as good containers. You can also grow crops in old drawers, weatherproofing the wood first and then drilling holes for drainage and lining the drawers with plastic. You may also have to add corner braces to the drawers to stop the wood from warping, but they will make eye-catching veg containers. Use your own home-grown stems of bamboo, when the canes are green and flexible, or red dogwood, to cut and weave into plant supports. If you want to create an arch which will be smothered in flowering plants, but don’t want to spend a fortune, you can do it cheaply by bending old lengths of metal pipe or builders’ reinforcing bars, which will all be hidden by the climbers.

LINK-MAG Gardening Good Enough to Eat - Spinach

Best of the bunch - Peony

Well-known for their huge blooms in late spring and early summer, these blousy perennials will add a romantic, feminine touch to any border. They take a couple of seasons to settle down and produce flowers, hate being moved and prefer an open sunny spot, sheltered from cold winds - but the reward is a vast array of large blooms in colours from cream to deep red. The common peony, P. officinalis, is a cottage garden favourite, growing 60cm (2ft) high and producing 12cm (5in) blooms in a variety of shades, flowering in May and June. The most popular are P. lactiflora, which flower in June. Good scented varieties include ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ or ‘Sarah Bernhardt’. For big, bold flowers, go for ‘Bowl of Beauty’, which produces pink flowers with a cream centre. Others to watch out for include ‘Peter Brand’, which produces deep red blooms and whose foliage turns red in autumn, contrasting well with ornamental grasses and bearded irises. Peonies need mulching in spring, staking and feeding with a general fertiliser in late summer. The stems should be cut down to ground level in autumn.

Three Ways to... Start with edibles in small spaces

Spinach is one of those vegetables that years ago picked up a bad reputation for being bitter, overcooked and generally disliked by children. However, in recent years, as spinach has been wilted rather then boiled to death, or eaten raw in salads, its image has undergone a facelift. The earliest sowings of spinach should now be ready for cutting, although it’s worth sowing more seed throughout May for a continuous crop. Pick leaves when they are 5-10cm for eating raw in salads, but let them grow bigger if you want them for cooking. If you have sown spinach in seed drills during March or April, you’ll need to water it in June or July. Give the soil a good soaking once a week to stop it bolting, and then keep picking over it regularly.

What to do this month • Sow seeds of biennial flowers

like honesty and Canterbury bells, which can be transplanted to their flowering position later on in the year.

Raise new plants of deciduous azaleas, magnolias and other shrubs by layering low-growing shoots of young growth to soil level.

Continue tying flower spikes to canes on tallgrowing perennials like delphiniums.

Pinch out the shoot tips of fuchsias in the greenhouse to encourage branching.

Dig out individual lawn weeds by hand.

Keep potting on cuttings of chrysanthemums into larger pots in the greenhouse, as their roots grow.

Apply long-lasting weedkiller to gravel paths and drives.

Remove green algae from ponds by twisting it onto a stick or rake, adding it to the compost heap.

Thin gooseberries using the crop for cooking. Remove every alternate fruit along stems, leaving more room for the remaining ones to develop.

1.

To get a regular crop of your favourite salad, sow small amounts two or three weeks apart.

2.

Start some vegetables off in small trays or modules on a well-lit porch or kitchen windowsill.

Hang pheromone traps in apple trees to attract and catch the male codling moth.

3.

3. Add seaweed concentrate to your watering can for better yields and disease-resistant plants.

Cover fruit cages with netting, or drape it over strawberries to keep birds off developing fruits.

JAGUAR XE Portfolio AWD by Rob Auchterlonie

J

aguar’s junior executive offering has been attracting plenty plaudits since its launch in 2015. And it’s not hard to see why.

For too long the Germans have held sway in the battle for sales in the premium sector. And rightly so. You can’t argue against the quality of the cars Audi, Mercedes and BMW line up for your approval. But they’ve got a bit of opposition from the British built XE, a car flying the UK flag with a bit more aplomb than the unlamented X-Type, which wasn’t much more than a Mondeo in a different coat which pretty soon went out of fashion. In profile it almost has the looks of a coupe, a very neat coupe, but of course it’s not. And there aren’t 26

many coupes I can think of that will carry five adults in leather cosseted luxury. One of its biggest plus points is the superb driving position. Knowing how many packaging hurdles designers have to negotiate, I can hardly believe how tailored it is: perfect seat shape and position, ideal control layout and instrument view. Maybe the chocolate brown leather interior might not be to everyone’s liking but it gives you a different choice from the more mainstream black/grey/ivory leather on offer on most option lists. It’s a car that’ll be on the radar for anyone holding down a decent job, and it’s available with a choice of engines that makes the XE fairly cost effective to run.

FASTFACTS:

Jaguar XE Portfolio AWD; £40,775; 1999cc four cylinder twin turbo diesel, 240ps, 240Nm; eight speed automatic; top speed 155mph, 0-60mph 6.7secs; fuel – urban 34.5, extra urban 54.3, combined 45.1; CO2 144g/km.

The body shell feels stiff, the engine operates smoothly enough and what they call acoustic management (sound deadening to you and me) is pretty good considering it’s a diesel under the bonnet which dishes up progress that is reasonably swift. It just doesn’t make Jaguar-like noises. There’s a choice of drive modes, which also alters the display ahead of you, and opting for dynamic can make the XE a bit quicker to react when you’re trying to get onto a busy roundabout or into traffic from a side road. I love the way the dash cuts into the doors, so the air from the side vents sweeps round and into the cabin. It also warms up the door handles nicely on cold days. The boot looks a decent size, and actually is, but the bootlid isn’t that big because of the downward sweep of the rear window, so loading it up requires some

precision. And opening the rear doors calls for a bit of care due to the way the door edge sweeps back into the C pillar. The interior – and indeed the exterior exudes class, and they used to say you can’t buy that. Well let me tell you that you can. It’ll cost you £41,000. To an extent, we’ve been down this road before, with the X-Type, which had similar hopes pinned on it for sales success. But XE seems to be bucking that earlier trend. Jaguar have come up with something capable of taking on the seried ranks of Johnny Bosch. FOR: classy looks, a genuine alternative to the 3 series and A4. AGAINST: doesn’t sound like a Jaguar should

lackpool & Fylde Light Opera Company present The Tony and Olivier award-winning Me and My Girl, a musical with music by Noel Gay and its original book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose. The musical is set in the glittering 1930s and tells the story of an unapologetically unrefined cockney gentleman named Bill Snibson, who learns that he is the 14th heir to the Earl of Hareford. Bill must choose between fitting in with proper society or losing his girl, fishmonger’s assistant Sally Smith. Me and My Girl had a successful original run in the West End in 1937, and was turned into a film in 1939, titled The Lambeth Walk, named after one of the show’s songs. The show includes classic favorites such as the song The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Leaning On A Lamp-post and The Lambeth Walk. Blackpool & Fylde Light Opera Company have presented such hits as, Hairspray, Legally Blonde, Grease, and 9 To 5 at Blackpool’s premier theatre and have received incredible reviews and awards for their productions. Money matters with Martin Lewis

Student loan advice

T

his is a clarion call to everyone who’s been to university in the last 20 years or so. Hundreds of thousands of you have overpaid your student loans and with one quick phone call could be entitled to £100s or £1,000s back. I first dipped my toe in this subject last November, suggesting people try it to see if it happened. Ever since I’ve been swamped with success stories of people getting their cash back. There are three main ways you may be owed money – if you’ve questions the full details are in my www.mse.me/ studentloanoverpayments guide, but in brief…

1. You may have started repaying your student loan too early

You’re only eligible to start repaying your student loan in the April after graduation, which for most is around nine months after leaving. For those who didn’t finish 34

university, it’s the April following leaving - even then you only repay if you earn over a set threshold.

• Started Uni in or after 2012 in England and Wales:

Your repayment threshold has always been £21,000 though it rises to £25,000 next month (a big change, for more on how it works see www.mse. me/2012studentloanrepay.

• Started Uni before 2012 in England & Wales, or any

time since 1998 in Scotland & Northern Ireland: The threshold has changed each year. It is currently £17,775 and rising to £18,830 in April.

Yet a freedom of information request we did, shows in the last three years alone, over 100,000 university leavers repaid before the first April, which they shouldn’t have done. And it’s likely there are 100,000s more going all the way back to 1998. The reason this happens is if you are an employee

ADVERTISE - Book Online www.link-mag.co.uk 0800 970 7687 or sales@link-mag.co.uk

you repay your student loan automatically through the payroll. So if your employer has the wrong info about your uni leaving date (which can be their fault or yours), or simply ignore it, then you may’ve started repaying too soon. And if so you’re entitled to your money back. I’ve heard of so many success like Ann who tweeted me: “@MartinSLewis just rang Student Loan Company and have overpaid £1,100!” and Tom who tweeted: “Thank you @MartinSLewis 5 minute phone call to Student Loans Company and got £315 back from paying too early in 2009”.

2. You could’ve overpaid in a particular year

You only have to pay back your student loan if you earn over the earnings threshold in a tax year. Yet most payrolls work on a monthly basis. So the £21,000 threshold is seen as £1,750 a month. If you earned over that in a month, such as for a bonus, you could’ve had the money taken off you. Or if you stopped work half way through the year, money could’ve been taken off you, even though in total you earned under £21,000 in the year. If that’s happened to you, you may be due money back, like Oli who said: ‘My starting salary was £25,000, but because my employment didn’t start at the start of the tax year I was eligible to get £450 back.’ Yet if you earned over £21,000 in a year, but due to irregular income too much was taken from you (eg you earnt £22,000 but had more than £90 taken) you can’t claim this back, as once you earn over £21,000 your repayments are paid at everything you earn on £1,750/ month.

3. You could still be paying even though you’ve already paid off your loan

A huge 86,000 overpaid this way in 2015/16 alone. This happens because the Student Loans Company only gets told by HMRC how much you’ve paid once a year (though it does retrospectively calculate the interest as if you’d paid each month). As a result, people who’ve finished paying off their loans can still have money deducted up to a year later

– this is due to change from 2019. It will write and tell you if this has happened, but that takes time, if you think you’re impacted call it and speak to it. In the meantime to avoid this happening, a Martin Lewis new rule means in the last 23 months you can switch to repaying the loan by direct debit instead of through your employer – which should help. How to get money back if you think you’re due? In a perfect world you’d check your payslips, then call up the Student Loan Company with your national insurance number, payroll number and PAYE reference. Yet the world isn’t always perfect, so do that if you can, it helps the Student Loans Company, but if you don’t have these things just call it on 0300 100 0611 and it will do its best to help. If interest rates on student loans are high, isn’t overpaying good? It’s predicted that 83% of university leavers who started uni in or after 2012 won’t clear their full loan plus interest in the 30 years before it’s wiped. So apart from the very highest earning 17%, for everyone else, extending the repayment time by starting early simply means you pay more back unnecessarily – so reclaim it. For those who started university before that or are in Scotland or Northern Ireland, as the amount borrowed is lower, you are more likely to clear all the debt before the loan is wiped. Yet here the interest rate is far lower, just 1.5%, so you can actually earn more saving this than repaying your interest. Therefore if you need the cash now, such as to clear other debts, it’s still worth getting your money back.

The heat is on

D

iane Simone from the Care & Repair Team at Blackpool Coastal Housing was named a Heat Hero at a special awards ceremony at the Houses of Parliament held recently. The Heat Heroes Awards are open to individuals across England and Wales and celebrate those who go above and beyond to get the recognition they deserve – for helping people in their community live in warmer homes. Held in partnership with Scottish Power and the charity National Energy Action, there were some very strong candidates, but the judges managed to select 15 worthy winners. Not-for-profit organisations including local authorities, health and social care agencies, voluntary and statutory agencies and community groups were encouraged to nominate staff and volunteers for the award. Blackpool Coastal Housing Director of Housing Services, Maggie Cornall, said ‘We were all delighted to hear that Diane was nominated and won the “Heat for Hero’s” award from the National Energy Action and

ommunity Trust announce new partnership initiative with The Royal British Legion aimed at supporting older veterans.

Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that there is a need for more social opportunities for ex-servicemen and women in the Blackpool and Fylde area. Through funding from The Royal British Legion (TRBL), we are delighted therefore to announce news of two new social groups that will be aimed at veteran (aged 50+) servicemen and women. This follows on from our recently launched Sporting Memories programme, which is aimed at older (50+) sports fans. Ashley Hackett, Chief Executive at Blackpool FC Community Trust explains that “the aspiration is that these fun groups will be an opportunity where like-minded people with similar interests and backgrounds can meet up, share stories, make new contacts / acquaintances, and 38

Scottish Power presented at the House of Commons. Many residents within Blackpool face fuel poverty and suffer from inadequate heating systems and a lack of insulation. The work that Diane does to help some of our most vulnerable customers is exemplary. She has a sympathetic and caring approach along with a tenacity to seek out sources of funding to allow improvements to their homes so they can become safe and comfortable to live in. The impact of this work cannot be over-estimated reducing the risk that vulnerable people face with becoming ill with a variety of respiratory conditions and hypothermia. Well done Diane – you are a true Heat Hero!’ For more on Heat Heroes go to: www.nea.org.uk/ award-schemes/heat-heroes-awards-2017 hopefully be less socially isolated.” • Monthly Veterans Club at Bloomfield Road. Last Tuesday of every month, 1.30-3pm (Starts March 27th) • Weekly Veterans Club at Teanlowe Centre, FY6 7A every Wednesday from 1.30-3pm (Starts April 4th) • Weekly Sporting Memories group at Bloomfield Road, every Thursday from 1pm - 2:30pm Alison Bunn, Area Manager for the Royal British Legion, said: ‘Many people don’t realise that we fund other organisations to fill gaps in services to the Armed Forces Community, but RBL gives a significant amount to support local projects. Blackpool FC Community Trust’s project will help us to support older veterans and their families by bringing people together. This can combat social isolation and help to build confidence while linking participants into other positive activities. It also means that we can identify those who are not accessing other support services but may need additional support – through projects like this we can help even more veterans and their families.’ If anyone would like to learn more about the Blackpool FC Community Trust projects please email office@bfcct.co.uk or telephone 01253 348691

Caring for your pet

You smoke they smoke PDSA warns that smoking around your pet could harm them

P

DSA has launched a campaign urging smokers to stop lighting up around their pets - as it warned the toxic fumes could kill or harm them. The negative effects of secondhand smoke on humans are well known, but the impact passive smoking can have on our pets is something that smokers often underestimate, or might not consider at all. Studies show that animals who are exposed to smoke are at a higher risk of developing respiratory disease and some cancers. It can also make existing lung conditions, such as asthma, much worse. PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan, said: ‘Many pet owners are unaware of the risks that smoking around their pets can have on their

health. If they knew I’m sure they would want to take measures to protect them.’ She continued that ‘Recent scientific studies have found that family pets can be affected by passive smoking. Vets regularly see the devastating impact smoking can have on pets, from respiratory problems like asthma and chronic coughing through to more serious conditions such as cancers like lymphoma, which in cats is twice as likely if they have exposure to cigarette smoke. Thanks to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery we’ve launched a campaign to tackle this issue. We want pet owners to realise that if they smoke, their pets smoke too.’ Passive smoking in dogs is linked to the onset of breathing problems and there are links between

breathing in passive smoke and difficult-to-treat nasal and sinus cancers in longer nosed breeds, and lung cancer in other breeds. In cats, their grooming habits mean that once smoke lands on their fur, they can swallow the harmful chemicals through licking. Cigarette smoke can also be harmful to pet birds and small pets (such as guinea pigs and rats) as they have sensitive respiratory systems. Pet owners can reduce the risk to their pets by smoking outside, away from their pets — or even better, by stopping smoking altogether. PDSA is the UK’s leading vet charity. On a mission to improve pet well-being through prevention, education and treatment. For more information and pet health advice visit www.pdsa.org.uk

In association with established family brand Gloworm Festival, Party On The Prom is set to be a brilliant day out for everyone. Party On The Prom makes up the third and final day of the newly announced and highly anticipated Blackpool Festival. While days one and two will appeal to electronic music lovers from across the country with its mammoth lineup of DJ talent, Sunday is the date that families will be adding to the calendar. The headline news for young ones is that CBeebies presenter and BAFTA winner Andy Day—who anchors the channel as well as having his own shows such as Andy’s Animal Adventures—will appear on the Party On The Prom main stage. Alongside him comes tribute act, A Touch Of Little Mix, who’ll perform a selection of the girl group’s hit songs. Both parents and the young ones can get down for a dance with Raver Tots featuring old school DJ icon DJ

Slipmatt, whom mums and dads will remember as being responsible for SL2’s 90s hit, ‘On A Ragga Tip’! Family-friendly live band Johnny and the Raindrops also stars, with their unique ‘jump-up-and-downrocking-and-rolling-can’t-sit-downbest-time-ever’ music with help from lots of props, costumes and the audience themselves. As well as this there is a whole host of other activities including Go Bake, Drum Banging with the Beatfeet Crew, Mad Science, Clubbersize, Rhubarb Theatre, Singing Mermaid, Jo Jingles, Splay Messy Play and Little Learners, face painting, fairground rides, circus skills, sing-a-longs, and arts & crafts, to further stimulate the kids in exciting and engaging ways. There will also be plenty of food stalls, baby changing facilities, as well as drinks and alcohol for those old enough.
