Portrait d’une génération
À partir de la question des mutations qui sera le fil conducteur sous la houlette du commissaire Michel Bouisson (VIA, Paris), l’exposition se donne pour objectif de présenter le travail d’une dizaine de designers précurseurs et chefs de file des différents courants de la nouvelle génération du design parisien, plus conscients de leurs responsabilités, s’écartant avec jubilation des sentiers battus et qui s’affirment dans des démarches réellement créatives et exploratoires. L’exposition s’attachera à mettre en lumière, pour chacun, une problématique qui caractérise leur démarche actuelle, à travers 5 ou 6 objets, afin de dessiner au plus juste le portrait d’une génération : François Azambourg, Ruedi Baur, Matali Crasset, Delo Lindo, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Matthieu Lehanneur, Jean-Marie Massaud, Cellule Design EDF, R&D. Cette exposition a reçu l’appui financier du VIA (Valorisation de l’Innovation dans l’Ameublement), de la Ville de Paris, de Cultures France, de la Fondation EDF Diversiterre et du Consulat Général de France à Québec.
———— In the context of the 10th MONTREAL IN LIGHTS Festival which, this year features the city of Paris, the UQAM design center will present Paris / Design in Mutation. Taking off from a question about mutation, the exhibition, under the direction of commissioner Michel Bouisson (VIA, Paris) has, as its connecting thread, the objective of presenting the work of ten designers, forerunners and leaders of different trends in Paris’ new design generation and more conscious of their responsabilities. They veer off from beaten paths and affirm themselves by using truly creative, exploratory methods. For each designer, the exhibit attempts to highlight an approach which typifies their current work via 5 or 6 objects, defining, as closely as possible, the portrait of a generation : Francois Azambourg, Ruedi Baur, Matali Crasset, Delo Lindo, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Matthieu Lehanneur, Jean-Marie Massaud, Cellule Design EDF, R&D. The exhibition has received financial support from VIA (Validation for Innovation in Furniture Design), the City of Paris, CulturesFrance, the EDF (Electricity of France) Diversiterre Foundation, and France’s General Consulate in Quebec. Un long « voyage bohème » se prépare dans les secrets de l’atelier, dans l’environnement minéral et aérien qui a vu les balbutiements d’un itinéraire artistique transversal porté par des « voyages intérieurs dans la matière et sa transformation », comme le dit si bien Sylvie Richoux, commissaire de l’exposition Sathal Creatures.
A long « bohemian voyage » will be prepared in the secrets of the workshop, a mineral, airy environment which saw the beginnings of a transversal, artistic itinerary drawn into « inner voyages to materials and their transformation », well said by Sylvie Richoux, curator of the Sathal Creatures exhibit.

Portrait of a generation
2009-2013 Fred, the Shaman, plants her magical universe’s decor in two locations, between fashion and art. An itinerant, two-headed odyssey revealing 20 years of fashion, investigations where the unconscious takes us all the way to vertigo.

« Yes, but not just any fabric. I transfigure it. I take woven fabric and wash, color, pigment and recycle it in a creative movement of weaving, embroidery and transformation… I make it my own. » She takes natural fabrics - linen, silk, leather and du Puy or Calais laces - and submits them to final « insults ». Over the years, something has settled in like an intuition, a gesture or even a certain truth. The Musée de la Mode exhibit’s scenography neither choreography nor based on a specific theme - is imagined as the first step of a « bohemian » voyage which will leave Marseille in 2009 and return in 2013. Like a parallel universe, Fred Sathal invades the FRAC space and moves her workshop there. The Canopy of Heaven is a metal/fabric structure of linen, lace, yarns, sequins and glitter. Raw flax strands and textiles will undergo a metamorphosis « since raw materials awaken a desire to move on to the next world ».

Au fur et à mesure des années, s’installe quelque chose de l’ordre de l’intuition, du geste, jusqu’à la vérité. La mise en scène de l’exposition au Musée de la Mode - ni chronologique, ni thématique, est pensée comme la première étape d’un voyage « bohème » partant de Marseille en 2009 pour y revenir en 2013. Comme un univers parallèle, Fred Sathal investit l’espace du FRAC, une transposition de son atelier. La Voûte Céleste, une structure métal / textile, lin et dentelles, fils, paillettes, sequins. Ici les mèches et les textiles de lin brut vont subir des métamorphoses, « car la matière brute réveille l’envie d’aller au-delà ».
