This Week’s Feature Story by Jane Bakewell

Dancing For A Cause You may not be Cinderella with glass slippers, a chariot escort and a curfew for midnight – but donning your dancing shoes for the annual Dancing with the BVI Stars night is putting your charitable foot in the right direction. The Governor and Mrs. Jenny McCleary have once again provided an elegant venue on the Government House terrace under the stars to host this highly anticipated fund-raising event on Saturday, October 18th benefiting the Family Support Network (FSN). It promises to be an evening where the music and dancers will take the main stage for the bulk of the night, as each “BVI Star” you wish to take a turn on the floor with comes with a pledge! That’s right – consider it a dance card with some financial backing. There are 15 diverse stars from all walks of life willing to glide across that dance floor with you, from men in uniform – a police officer or fireman to men in skirts – actually one man in a Scottish kilt minus the bagpipes. How about a chance for a twirl with Miss BVI, Rosanna Chichester, or a dance with long time BVI high school principal and fungi musician, Elmore Stoutt? DJ Remedy will keep the dance rhythms going well into the evening and the $30 ticket fee includes,

a host bar and a delicious array of foods catered just for the event. This year some of the coveted auction items include a two-night stay at Peter Island including meals and a weekend package in Anegada. Amidst all of the fun that goes along with this gala celebration is the realization that this fund-raiser is key to the ongoing work of FSN, an organization that deals with challenging family social issues including substance abuse and domestic violence, offering counseling and referral services – all for free. Executive Director, Dr. Sylvia Simmons deals with many of these issues on a daily basis providing needed support for those who don’t know where to turn when crisis strikes the family. So come out not just to kick up your heels, but consider that your participation in the raffles, auction and dance cards will go a long way to support the FSN and the vital services they offer the BVI community.

Ask Koren Just Do It!

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Ask Koren

ward are poor health, being constantly broke, feeling unfulfilled, being taken advantage of, extra pounds on your stomach, a job that brings you no joy, an abusive relationship, excess stress. You need so badly to get away from these things that you have to act NOW before they suck the very life from you. Pull factors are the possible rewards and benefits of taking the particular course of action – these could include a feeling of satisfaction, a promotion, increased self esteem, a sense of justice, a nicely toned body, a spiritual awakening, freedom, rebuilding a relationship, marriage. Think of all that you stand to gain by making that first move. Challenges and roadblocks will come but every time you make some progress, you become stronger and more motivated. So take the bull by the horns. Just do it! Start with small steps or a giant leap, but just start. Sit at the computer and start typing, put on those walking shoes, start saving 20 dollars a month, mail that resume, tell that person it’s over. Don’t put it off any longer. Do what will make you be a better person, do what will make you more happy and fulfilled and do what is right. Send your questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com or via twitter at @korennorton

Remember the Nike slogan, “Just do it”? Well we can’t all afford expensive sneakers, but we can afford to adopt messages that can help us to move forward with our ambitions, our goals and our dreams. It costs us nothing to make a decision to get started – to take just one step – to just do it! Today, we’re going to start a personal and collective mission; we’re going to do away with excuses, banish laziness, turn our backs on bad-mouthers and we are going to do what we know we need to do. What have you been putting off? Who have you been afraid to speak up to? Where are you heading that takes you off your path to success and why are you not doing the right thing? Why can’t you – Just do it? Oh yes, I know the list of common excuses and I won’t pretend I haven’t used some of them myself. I don’t have the time, I don’t have the money, no one else will love me, it’s too hard, I will have to give him up, what will people say and the list goes on and on. Don’t let fear leave you stagnant and unable to move. Instead of focusing on what it will take from you or what you have to give up to be successful, focus on how your life will change for the better. Consider the push and pull factors that could motivate you to take that first step: Push factors are the things you are trying to get away from. Some push factors that could drive us for-

TV’s Newest and Hottest There is always a lot of “buzz” with the fall season rollout of new TV shows. Which will survive and become classics like Grey’s Anatomy – now in its 10th season and which will fold after only a few months of poor Nielsen ratings? It may be hard to judge from just a story line or even the powerful presence of a major actor or two. It appears that it is a combination of good script writing, a timely subject that grabs the audience’s attention and of course the chemistry that is felt between the various actors. Here is a preview of some of the new fall shows generating “office buzz” amongst co-workers at the

Running to Raise Awareness Governor Boyd McCleary joined other attendees at Saturday’s Family Support Network run for charity. Saturday’s run was to help raise awareness of domestic issues in the country.
