Create a lovely knit neck warmer, complete with button closure, just in time for bike rides on cool spring evenings. Learn how to cast on, knit, purl, and other clever knitting tricks. This is a great class for true beginners or if it’s been a long time and your looking for a refresher. Needles and some yarn included.

Work with our resident artist to create a unique piece of furniture! Using fabrics and decorative decisions students will assemble and upholster their very own stool. With the use of a simple form, students will grasp the ideas of armature and upholstery within functional furniture. Topics such as basic sewing skills, pattern making, and fabric printing will be covered while focusing on the trade of upholstery. Use either store bought fabrics or your own printed textiles while learning basic skills such as sewing and pattern making. Our newly expanded and upgraded sewing studio enables students to work large and use heavy-weight fabrics with the industrial machine. Materials fee includes wooden pieces for stool. (More available for purchase if students choose to make more during open studio hours.) No experience needed.

Have you had your eye on classes in the Textile Department, but not quite sure where to start? We’ve designed this class with you in mind! Students will run through several processes such as dyeing, screenprinting, and sewing, and complete a beginner placemat project to show off your newly acquired textile skills. Create more than placemats during work time in class and during open studio hours. No experience necessary! Materials fee includes dyes and inks in class. Monday 11am-2pm

MULTILEVEL EMBROIDERY SAMPLERS ( 5 WEEKS ) Socialize with classmates while learning traditional embroidery with a contemporary spin. Each week students practice new stitches such as the chain stitch, bullion knot and couching onto a newly designed screen-printed sampler. Build up layers of thread on your cloth, and leave the class with a finished sampler to show off your skills. All materials provided in class, including floor standing hoops. Wednesday 6:30-9:30pm

( 10 WEEKS ) Have you taken First Time Sewing, and want to work on your own projects now? Want to learn how to use a serger for a more professional finish? Maybe you are a self-taught sewer, but would like some professional guidance. This class allows students to choose individual projects and work closely with the guidance of the instructor to complete oneof-a-kind sewing projects. Bonus topics covered: serger instruction, sewing machine feet attachments, button-hole stitches, and topics as they relate to student’s projects. Prerequisite: First Time Sewing or equivalent experience. Sunday 10am-1pm

DYE SURVEY: ACID, MX, INDIGO AND NATURAL DYES ( 10 WEEKS ) Ready to expand your textile practice by trying dyes? Sample MX, acid, indigo and natural dyes that can be used for immersion and screenprinting techniques on natural fabrics (cotton, linen, silk, rayon, etc). Work with two of our favorite instructors to create a colorful collection of fabric samples as a palette for future creations, and delve deeper into the world of dyes. All levels welcome. Beginner students will be introduced to an array of dyes, while experienced printers will expand their knowledge of printing. All dyes provided with materials fee, students provide fabric after first class.

TEXTILES

Expand your quilting/art making practice! This introduction to screenprinting is specifically designed for quilters. The first weeks will introduce students to prepping screens and printing before starting to focus on designing simple small scale repeats on the computer and experimentation with color. The final project will be a class-wide fat quarter print exchange. A class kit will be sold on the first day for $25.
