WELCOME TO LILLEBÆLT Lillebælt is located right in the middle of Denmark and an excellent place to go bike riding. Signposted routes make it easy to get around; the area has good bike paths, and there is always something interesting just around the corner for both children and adults. Cyclists at Lillebælt can enjoy varied, beautiful scenery and unique fauna. In the summer months, porpoise can be seen frolicking in Lillebælt. Learn about Denmark’s history by visiting the many historic monuments, such as the ramparts in Fredericia and Koldinghus in Kolding, and have interesting cultural experiences in the harbour towns, where there are plenty of places to eat and accommodation to suit any taste and budget. This guide contains proposals for different routes. Whether you bring your own tent and luggage, are looking for a one-day excursion with the family, want to go on a quick mountain bike ride or plan to cover long distances on a racing bike – we have something that will meet your needs. We hope you will enjoy your time in nature together with other cyclists and nature lovers, and that you will take good care of Lillebælt just like we do. Welcome to Lillebælt, and enjoy your ride!

BICYCLE ADVENTURES AT LILLEBÆLT The Danish cycling tradition dates back to the 1920s. Bike riding is an integral part of day-to-day life in Denmark, and cyclists are well looked after in the traffic. We have a widely developed network of bike paths, which makes it safe to cycle in the area and experience nature, the towns and Lillebælt.

LILLEBÆLT HAS MORE THAN 200 KM OF SIGNPOSTED BIKE ROUTES

There are more than 200 km of signposted bike paths at Lillebælt. We have national, regional as well as local routes that take protected areas, birds and animals into account so as to avoid damage to the natural environment. Danish legislation provides for uniform signage along the routes, so you can tell the difference between national, regional and local routes. If there are no arrows on the signs, it means that you should continue straight ahead. We have selected 19 routes and have described some of the most interesting places to stop along the way. Please note that some of the proposed routes follow existing national and/or regional routes. The map shows you which signs to follow. A couple of the routes are not yet signposted, so in these cases it is important to follow the directions on the map.

Between KulturØen and Teglgårdsparken, the route follows the blue clover path and takes you from coast to coast in Middelfart. This route is ideal for people who want to experience Lillebælt from both sides and enjoy the beautiful scenery on the Hindsgavl peninsula. From the harbour promenade, there is an excellent view of both the Old and the New Lillebælt Bridge, and the old harbour offers sailing, fishing or whale watching excursions. Between the Old Lillebælt Bridge and Øksenrade Forest, the route passes cliffs with glittering black and white sand, which Middelfart supplied to the chancellery in Copenhagen in the 1800s. In addition to the unique scenery, the route also has many cultural experiences to offer. It takes you past Adlerhus, the Teglgård fishing hamlet and the old lunatic asylum. Adlerhus was the gateway to the Hindsgavl manor house and marked the border between the town and the manor property. The lunatic asylum opened in 1888. It functioned as an independent society with 700 beds, own gas and waterworks, a church and a graveyard as well as staff accommodation. It closed in 1999 and has since been converted into the mixed commercial and residential area called Teglgårdsparken. The Teglgård fishing hamlet was named after a brickworks that was located in the area in the 1500s. This was also where porpoise hunters had their storage facilities until 1898, when the guild was disbanded. In the mall in Middelfart you can find specialty shops, cafés, museums and galleries that entice you to take a well-deserved break.

The route from Svenstrup to Vejlby Fed meanders through the countryside with open fields and small villages. Take a break in Vejlby and enjoy the beautiful church. Vejlby is a small village with approximately 200 inhabitants. The name was derived from Wæthælby and means the village at the ford. The village church, Vejlby Church, was ‘modernised’ in 1492, when the church tower, the porch and the vaults were erected. Top up your water bottles at the tap outside the church, and there is also a pump so you can pump up your tires, if necessary. Vejlby Fed Beach is one of Funen’s many child-friendly beaches. It has an attractive jetty from people catch crabs and fish. If you would like to get out onto the water, you can rent one of the pedalos and paddle down along the beach. PHOTO: Vejlby Fed Camping

Middelfart Marina

The trip from KulturØen to Middelfart Marina follows the red clover path. Along the way you gain insight into Middelfart’s recent history including industry and residential suburbs. The iron foundry J. Hess & Søn was located in Jernbanegade until 1977, when it was replaced by a supermarket. The iron foundry, which manufactured cast iron stoves, was one of the town’s leading businesses. At Middelfart Marina you can practise different types of water sports during summer, for example stand-up paddling, windsurfing, snorkelling and match racing. The marina also hosts international yacht races. Bring your bathers and go for a dip at the marina or continue to Skrillinge beach. In 1969, plans were adopted for the suburb now known as Ø-kvarteret, which boasts green areas and a well-established network of paths. Close to Ø-kvarteret and Middelfart Marina is the Little Belt golf club with 18 holes, a 9-hole Pay and Play and a par-3 course. PHOTO: Lillebælt golf club

The route from KulturØen to Strib follows the black clover path. It takes you along the coast of Lillebælt with views of the Old and New Little Belt Bridges. On Gl. Banegårdsvej you ride past the old NKT factory (Nordisk Kabel- og Trådfabrikker), which manufactured products such as nails and steel wire. Opposite you will see the property Tårnborg, which was built as rental accommodation for the factory workers. To the east of the small square on Industrivej is the town’s first railway station from 1865, and to the south a building which used to house the railway hotel. The large urns in front of the buildings are containers of acid previously used at NKT. The New Lillebælt Bridge opened in 1970 and was the first suspension bridge in Denmark. The two pylons are 118 m tall and support the main cables measuring 1.5 km in length. With a bit of luck, you may spot common porpoises on your ride along the coast to Strib. We suggest you stop at Strib Lighthouse and enjoy the view of Fredericia. In Strib you can do a detour to Strib Automobile Museum and have a bite to eat at the local butcher or baker, or you can choose to end your ride at one of Middelfart’s cafés or restaurants. The route from Føns to Båring runs northwards from Føns Vig through the small towns of Nørre Aaby and Båring. This route is ideal for people who enjoy history and beautiful scenery. Not far from Føns, you will come across the 113 ha large lake at Føns Vang, which was dammed as early as 1790. The dam was built to make it easier to cross the inlet. The area became a thriving trading centre with a steam mill and a 260 m long jetty, which could accommodate large ships, and where products such as roof tiles and grain from Føns and the surrounding areas were shipped out. Today, the area is home to breeding and migrating birds, including the black-headed gull and the Eurasian widgeon. With a bit of luck, you may also spot the white-tailed eagle in the area, as it breeds nearby. In Nørre Aaby you can visit Nørre Aaby Church with its unique forest cemetery, which is said to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Denmark. The town also has a railway station and provides opportunities for shopping. In Indslev, you can do a tour of Indslev Brewery, Denmark’s first wheat-based beer brewery. The history of the brewery goes as far back as 1897.

If you like to go for long rides through beautiful scenery, then this route is for you. It follows regional routes 70, 71 and 30 and takes you past Gamborg Inlet, Føns Cove, Tybrind Cove, Båring Cove and small villages on Funen. The route runs along the cost at Gamborg Inlet, Føns Cove and Tybrind Cove before turning inland and passing through some of the small towns. In Middelfart, the Hindsgavl Peninsula is worth a visit. Today, the Hindsgavl Peninsula is a nature park with a 165 ha fenced-off deer park and a nature and activity centre. Hindsgavl Manor, which was built in the 1700s, is also situated here. The history of Hindsgavl Manor dates as far back as 1295 when Valdemar Sejr built Hindsgavl Castle on the Hindsgavl Peninsula. Gamborg Inlet is part of the EU Little Belt habitat area and an internationally protected bird sanctuary. An organised guild in Middelfart, whose history dates back to 1593, hunted common porpoises in Gamborg Inlet. The guild was dissolved in 1898. In the views of many people, the Brænde River valley is one of the most varied and scenic areas on Funen. This is where you find Håre Bjerge with a number of preserved grave mounds dating back to the Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. Brænde Mill was originally built in the 1500s to generate power from Brænde River. Bring your bathers – there are many attractive beaches along the way. Enjoy the beaches at Båring Cove or continue to Strib Nordstrand.

The route around Rands Inlet is ideal for people who enjoy nature and birdlife. It follows regional routes 57 and 58. The fitness bike race ‘Rands Fjord Rundt’ takes place at the Rands Inlet, and T7 is part of the 35-km-long family bike race route. Rands Inlet is a preserved nature area. The hilly terrain, woodlands, lush meadows and steep slopes are home to a rich birdlife. With a bit of luck you may see the white-tailed eagle hunting in the area. Along the way you can park your bike and follow one of the hiking trails along the inlet. A viewpoint on the southern side of the inlet is a good place for spotting white-tailed eagles and other birds. The historic manor house Nebbegård lies on the northern side of Rands Inlet. This is where Valdemar Atterdag in 1348 entered a peace agreement with the Holstein counts on the redemption of Funen. If you would like to know what life in the country was like in the old days, we suggest you visit the Kringsminde farm museum. Here you can experience country life in the 17th and 18th centuries and see who carried out the many different jobs on the farm.

Take care to follow the instructions on the map, as not all parts of the route are signposted. Skærbæk Harbour is a nice place to have a rest and enjoy the view over Lillebælt. East of the town, you find Skærbæk Strandpark, where you can go for a swim. You can also visit the Skærbæk Fiskerisamling collection, which is located close to the harbour. The collection displays tools and equipment that were used in the fishing industry in the old days. Elbodalen is a 15 km long, beautiful valley, which lovers of nature will enjoy visiting. It was created by streams long ago during the Tertiary period and shaped by ice and meltwater during the ice ages that followed. Elbodalen has slopes of up to 40 m, which visitors pass when approaching Fredericia from the west. Elbodalen is rich in bird and plant life, and kingfishers, penduline tits and red kites breed in the area. Fuglsang Forest is an ideal spot for families. Children can roam freely on the playground or watch stags and young deer in the deer garden.

If you are looking for a bike ride that will show you interesting war history, town life and nature, then this route is a good choice. It follows national route 5 and regional route 58. Take care to follow the instructions on the map, as not all parts of the route are signposted. You can choose to start in the centre of Fredericia and check out the town’s attractive ramparts; the best protected ramparts in Northern Europe. It was Frederik III who in 1650 gave the order to build Fredericia Ramparts and the fortress town, which at times employed up to 5000 people. Today, the ramparts are one of the largest public city parks in Denmark. Explore the shops in Fredericia or continue the ride to Madsby Park, an interesting outdoor area west of the city. Rands Inlet is a nice place to enjoy your lunch in peace and quiet. The terrain is hilly with woodlands, grassy areas, cultivated fields and steep valley slopes covered in deciduous forest. Rands Inlet used to be an actual inlet but has since been converted to a protected freshwater lake. Finish your trip at Trelde Promontory, which has several places to spend the night and options for walks in the forest or a refreshing dip at the beach.

The River Valley route is a scenic bike route, which takes you through wide river valleys, with traces of both human and natural history. The route is not signposted, so it is important that you follow the instructions on the map. It takes you through Kolding River Valley past the Harteværket waterworks, which bears witness to the importance of the stream for Kolding’s development. Harteværket is Denmark’s first major hydropower plant and was built in 1918–1920. The power plant was built to cover the growing need for energy for lighting and manufacture at the time of the First World War. Hylkedalen’s attractive ice age landscape is characterised by river valleys and dramatic hills. Hylkedalen is intersected by Seest Mølleå stream and links up with Kolding River Valley. In the valley you can see cropped meadows and commons, which are home to rare species of plants and fungi. If you enjoy heights and aerial ropeways, Funky Monkey Park is the place to visit to challenge yourself. From Hylkedalen, the route continues through Vonsild to Djævlekløften along the gently flowing water of the Dalby Møllebæk stream. At Dalby Mill, it is worth stopping to enjoy the view of the spectacular meanderings that connect the stream with the inlet. Jutland’s largest royal castle, Koldinghus, is located in the centre of Kolding. Here you can see various exhibitions and there is even an option to dress up as a king for a day. If you like shopping, Kolding has a wide selection of specialty shops, cafés and restaurants. During summer, you can hire a canoe and admire the town and its surroundings from the water.

The waterway is an attractive bike ride along Kolding Inlet. It follows national route 5 most of the way. The route starts at Koldinghus and continues to the Stenderup peninsula where you can enjoy beautiful views over Kolding Inlet and Lillebælt. The old Stenderup forests, Nørreskov, Midtskov and Sønderskov, stretch along the coast of Lillebælt and offer an extensive network of paths. Here you can see the remainder of the large Farrisskov forest, which in the Middle Ages formed a belt across the whole of Jutland. In the forests, you can discover 5500-yearold dolmens and more than 3000-year-old grave mounds from the Bronze Age. The route leads onwards to Solkær Meadows, a unique nature area with a lake, water-logged meadows and a rich bird life. Stop at Skamlingsbanken and experience one of Denmark’s famous landmarks. Skamlingsbanken is 113 metres above sea level, and there are great views of the entire area between Kolding and Christiansfeld from the top. Skamlingsbanken is best known from the folk festivals that were held in the years 1843–1859 in support of the Danish cause in South Jutland. Today, Skamlingsbanken is a popular excursion spot. Since 1998, free opera concerts take place here during summer with up to 30,000 spectators.

The route from Hejls to Christiansfeld has something to offer every member of the family. It follows national route 5 and regional routes 10 and 51. Hejls and Hejlsminde are like pearls on a string facing the Little Belt, surrounded by water on three sides. At Hejlsminde, there is an attractive bike and walking trail around Hejls Nor. The terrain in the area is hilly and can therefore be somewhat challenging. Christiansfeld is unique, as it was planned and constructed in accordance with the same pattern as Herrnhut, the Moravian Brethren’s first German town. Most of the original town was built between 1773 and 1812, and the old part of town is today a lively cultural relic in the centre of town. Christiansfeld is known for its gingerbread, tiled stoves and the Moravian Brethren community, which built the town at the end of the 1700s. Enjoy a trip to Christinero, where the woodlands are full of small dams and natural springs. Try the guided tours around Christiansfeld and Christinero and the famous gingerbread baked according to an old recipe from 1799.

The medieval route is an attractive ride along narrow country roads. Originating in the Hærvejen road, this route was part of the transport route for cattle in the Middle Ages – from Jutland meadows to European cities. The route takes you past Jordrup, a small village with barely 570 inhabitants. In 1997, the town was nominated ‘Village of the Year’, and this event has been commemorated with an iron sculpture in the main street. The route offers lovely views over the surrounding fields, and at Lejrskov you can see the many grave mounds dotting the landscape around the town. In Lunderskov, we find Drabæk Mill, said to be the oldest business in Denmark – it has been operating under the same name since around 1100. In 1553, the mill was built as a royal watermill at the old customs border between the royal kingdom and the duchy of Slesvig. In recent times, the mill became famous for grinding Prince Joachim’s grain to flour to be used in the Schackenborg bread. Today, the mill is no longer in operation. It is privately owned and can be viewed from the outside. Lunderskov is one of the railway hubs in South Jutland, so you can catch a train if the ride is taking its toll on your legs.

The route from Herslev to Kolding follows national route 55 and is an attractive ride in slightly hilly terrain. Along the way you will see varying scenery with green hedges, low dams and woods. Route 55 joins national routes 5 and 6 at Nørre Bjert. At Elvighøj there is an excellent view of both the Kidholmene islands and Skærbækværket and a chance of a refreshing dip. If you are interested in design and art, we suggest you continue the ride to Trapholt Museum, also called ‘Jutland’s Louisiana’. The museum was inaugurated in 1988 and is situated in an attractive park with a view over Kolding Inlet. You can also visit the Danish Nursing History Museum to look at the development of nursing care through the ages. The museum is located in the former Christmas seal sanatorium from 1911 whose main building now houses the modern Koldingfjord hotel and conference centre.

The route follows regional route 58 along the Elbodalen valley and Gudsø river. Elbodalen has a rich plant and bird life and up to 40-metre-high slopes, which were created during various ice ages. The walking trails invite you to take a brisk walk, and along the way you may want to stop at Himmelpinden to enjoy the view. Continue past Gudsø Mill, a relic from the time when hydropower was an important source of energy in Denmark. The mill has been described in literature dating back to 1578, but was probably built in the Middle Ages. The existing mill building was constructed in 1867 and has been renovated regularly. In Kolding town, we suggest you visit one of the many attractions such as the old royal castle of Koldinghus, which is located in the centre of town. Kolding’s atmospheric town centre has many specialty shops, restaurants and cafés, so if you feel like spending a bit of time in a town, then Kolding is a good choice. PHOTO: Kolding Football golf

The route along the old Troldehedebane railway is ideal for the entire family. It follows national route 6 and parts of regional route 62. It is a comfortable ride without major inclines and takes you to Donssøerne and Ferup Lake. Both are ideal places to take a break and enjoy the view, and perhaps go for a walk. At the old sluice house at Ferup Lake, we suggest you have a look at the exhibition on the large construction projects carried out in the area over the past 100 years. The warehouse at Dybvadbro Station is another good place to stop to see the exhibition on Troldhedebanen, a private railway that operated from 1917 to 1968. The railway ran from Kolding to Troldhede in Central Jutland. We also recommend that you enjoy the scenery along Vester Nebel Stream, which has wound its way back to the original course, as well as the large reforested area, Harte Forest. At the agricultural museum in Kolding, Landbomuseet, you can see the development from wheel plough to combine harvester and the tools that were used 100 years ago. If you do a detour to Harteværket, you can learn about the history of hydropower. Today, Harteværket is a working museum offering visitors information about nature and cultural history.

The route through the Kongeådalen valley runs through attractive nature areas and small villages. It follows regional route 64. Kongeådalen is 2–3 km wide and approximately 30 km long. The special growth conditions on the valley’s many slopes provide for considerable variety in flora and fauna. Along the way you pass Dalby Mill, where a 600-metre new watercourse winds its way around the Møllesøen lake, which serves as a corridor for fish and small animals. In the Geographical Garden, you can enjoy a 12 ha large experience park and botanical garden with more than 2000 different trees and shrubs. Here you can see where the plants belong, as they have been divided into sections according to their geographical origin. On the way to Vamdrup, you pass the Svanemosen bog, one of Denmark’s few remaining raised bogs. Fovslet Forest has several well-preserved burial mounds, from which there is an excellent view. At the Kongeå Museum in Vamdrup you can learn why the town became important as a railway hub between 1866 and 1920. Old customs houses from the period between 1864 and 1920 can still be seen in the area around Vamdrup. All in all, the bike ride from Kolding to Vamdrup is rich in historical gems!

The trip from Middelfart to Kolding follows national route 6 and runs along Lillebælt and across the Old Lillebælt Bridge. It takes you past the charming harbour town of Middelfart, which lies on the waterfront of Lillebælt. Because of its location on Lillebælt, the town is the centre of a number of activities at, on and below the water, such as whale watching and diving excursions. In Middelfart, you can enjoy the view of Lillebælt and the two bridges while strolling along the harbour promenade. The town is a busy trade hub with a maritime atmosphere in the old streets and in the many squares that can be found scattered around town like small oases. As a new feature, you will be able to walk across the Old Lillebælt Bridge with effect from spring 2015. It will take you across the bridge at an altitude of 60 metres. This is the only place in Europe where you can try bridgewalking – an unforgettable experience that will give you butterflies in your stomach. If you feel like extending your trip, why not ride to Skærbæk Harbour where you can enjoy a refreshment before continuing to the old royal town of Kolding. In Kolding, we suggest visiting Koldinghus Castle, where you can take a guided tour of the castle, look at different exhibitions and enjoy the view from the tower. Kolding also has many attractions for children, for example the cultural centre “Nicolai for børn” (Nicolai for children) or the Slotsøbadet water park. In brief, this route provides for a beautiful trip along Lillebælt with plenty of urban culture and attractions for both children and adults.

The east coast route, which follows national route 5, is slightly hilly. It follows Lillebælt through Fredericia and Kolding and along the way provides views of Kolding Inlet, Mosvig and Hejlsminde Bay. The centre of Fredericia consists of streets at right angles surrounded by one of the best preserved ramparts in Northern Europe, dating back to the 1600s. The town centre has a large selection of specialty shops, cafés and restaurants. If you feel like a quick dip, the beach at Østerstrand is close to the city centre. Enjoy an ice cream at the kiosk on the beach or stroll along the scenic path at the water’s edge. From Fredericia, the route continues to Kolding and further south onto the Stenderup Peninsula. On the Stenderup Peninsula, we suggest a walk in the Stenderup woods, where some of the trees are more than 500 years old. Enjoy your bring-along coffee at Løverodde with a view over the Little Belt. At Skamlingsbanken you will come across one of the oldest monuments in Danish history. The granite column was raised in 1863 in memory of those who fought for the Danish cause. Today, Skamlingsbanken is a popular excursion spot, and in summer free operas are staged here, which attract audiences of up to 30,000. The route ends in the old Hejlsminde fishing hamlet, which today is a small seaside resort. The old Hejlsminde Badehotel was constructed in 1912 and is today regarded as the town’s landmark. If you enjoy water sports, we suggest you call in at Dunkerbeck Windsurfing Centre, which is located a stone throw from the waterfront. The centre hires out gear and offers courses in windsurfing, stand-up paddling and similar.

Avoid riding on horse trails, ski tracks and marked hiking routes away from the forest roads. 5. Never ride on the forest floor outside official mountain bike trails. 6. LILLEBÆLT NATURE PARK

Most bike routes at Lillebælt run through the Little Belt Nature Park – a stretch of land winding from Fredericia past Middelfart and further south past Kolding. Lillebælt Nature Park is a marine park in an area covering parts of the sea and the inlet and with several coastal and inland areas stretching from the Trelde Næs headland to Hejlsminde.

The nature park is a favourite breeding ground for birds such as the white-tailed eagle, western marsh harrier and common tern, and migratory birds such as common goldeneye and the red-breasted merganser. In addition, Lillebælt has one of the world’s largest populations of common porpoise. Up to 3,000 of the small whales gambol in the waves between June and September. You can get quite close to them by going on a whale watching tour on one of the tour boats in the area. If you are lucky, you may also see them on your bike ride along the water.

TRANSPORTATION OF BICYCLES

The website www.rejseplanen.dk has information about trains, buses and ferries in Denmark, which makes it easy for you to plan your transport to and from Lillebælt.

BICYCLES ON TRAINS

Most of DSB’s national trains have a special area designed for bikes. The bike must be placed in the designated area on the train, which is marked with a bike symbol. You cannot bring your bike when travelling on international trains (ICE/EC). These trains primarily run between Copenhagen and Nykøbing Falster. Bikes also cannot be transported on substitute buses. To transport your bike on a train, you must purchase a ticket for the bike in addition to your own ticket. Bike tickets are available from station vending machines, from the ticket office or by calling +45 70 13 14 15. More information is available at www.dsb.dk. REMEMBER to reserve a seat on Intercity and InterCityLyn trains during summer. Between 1 May and 31 August it is essential to book if you want to transport your bike by InterCity or InterCityLyn trains.

There is limited room for bikes on the trains. It is therefore a good idea to ask the personnel if there is room for your bike on the train. They will judge whether there is sufficient room, taking the number of passengers and safety into account. There is no guarantee that there will be enough room for your bike on the train.

TRANSPORTING BICYCLES BY BUS

Buses are a good alternative to trains if you need to go somewhere with your bike. Most buses have room for a couple of bikes. Contact the local bus company to hear what the options are. Fredericia and Kolding: www.sydtrafik.dk Middelfart: www.fynbus.dk
