These conflicts have led to the withdrawal from community participation of wise and experienced players and the arrogant dismissal of the hard-won wisdom of such players by those who confuse discovering a thing with inventing it. This shift is inevitable when a dynamic idea expands beyond the boundaries of a small avant-garde to the populace at large, and in itself, it’s value-neutral, carrying both the promise of fresh thinking and the menace of cultural forgetfulness. Now that our ranks number in the millions as opposed to a few thousand widely scattered souls, the need for generational reconciliation has grown greater than ever. It’s imperative, now that we’re so visible on the media radar screen, that lessons learned the hard way not have to be relearned under the harsh glare of public scrutiny. While kink, a term general enough to cover a multitude of sins, may be the flavor of the month, that flavor could turn sour fast if ugly incidents of predation and carelessness become widespread. Similarly, it’s unreasonable to assume that newcomers won’t bring new ideas worth taking seriously into a milieu where, frankly, certain rigid constructions of roles and protocol could use some updating. Nature Adores a Vacuum Pumping involves the use of a mechanical suction device, hand-operated or electrically powered, fitted with a small-diameter hose terminating in any of a variety of lucite tubes to be had in various sizes and shapes. Said tubes are then applied to a specific anatomical feature or erogenous region to generate a continuous or intermittent vacuum to the tissues in question. Depending on where, how, what with, how often and for how long the vacuum is maintained, the results can be deliriously pleasurable, exquisitely torturous, cosmetically mesmerizing or even permanently altering. A variant of vacuum play known as cupping actually dates to ancient China, where glass bulbs were used to extract toxins through the skin. A burning stick was placed in the cup first to consume all the oxygen within, and the cup was then applied to whatever region of the body needed detoxification. It’s still possible to buy sets of cups made in China, only the modern versions are molded from plastic

The clitoris in some respects resembles an “inny” choad, its head rising under a fleshy hood at the apex of the vagina and its nerve-rich roots buried within a woman’s pubic arch. Though clits vary greatly in natural size and visibility, like icebergs, the bulk of their mass is largely invisible from the surface until aroused. Suction should not be used for extended periods to avoid rupturing blood vessels and producing bruises, and some homemade gadgets adapted from cow- or goat-milking machines, which are considerably more powerful, aren’t recommended for human use. With reasonable concern for basic safety, pumping can produce an array of pleasurable responses, and, as interest in the practice becomes more widespread, the demand for more sophisticated apparatuses would have to be considered an “expanding” consumer base. BDSM is a “build to suit” endeavor for each couple. TABOO: Tell us a little about your background as an artist. HINES: I had formal art training, being enrolled in a couple of art institutes between the ages of ten and 15. However, I found the various instructors tended to be a bit too dogmatic and traditional. There were a lot of clashes between them and me. As a result, I lost interest in academic art and replaced it with an abiding (and ongoing) love of comic books. I particularly enjoy the work of [legendary BDSM illustrator] Joseph Farrell. Bosch and Degas were the other two whose compositions and techniques drew my attention. I found most BDSM art boring and uninteresting. TABOO: You tend to emphasize dominant characters over their submissive playthings. They’re rendered in greater detail, often taking up more room in the frame than those they dominate. HINES: I’ve always been more interested in the Dominants. A good villain always gets more attention. Part of it might be that one of my first adult relationships was with a Dominatrix some ten years older than myself. Strangely, I was the more

dominant partner, though it wasn’t intentional on my part. I’m still trying to figure that one out. She was a professional Domme and introduced me to the deep, layered BDSM scene, both as a voyeur and a participant. TABOO: Your submissives seem of a common type with certain variations. They’re usually young, pretty, helpless and weeping, while your assortment of Dominants clearly enjoy every variation of cruel sex. Would it be fair to say that you’re drawing from the submissive’s point of view? HINES: No, I have to admit I draw mostly from the Dominant view. TABOO: You choose your themes and situations from a wide range of time periods and geographical locations. What inspires your ideas? HINES: I purposely try to add variety to my subject matter(s). Sometimes I spend days reading and browsing in order to settle on a particular time and location to use in my art. I have also been fortunate to have traveled to observe (and sometimes participate in) the above and underground BDSM cultures. HINES: Most of my girlfriends happened to be dominant bisexuals, and I also often enjoyed the company of their lesbian friends, both Dommes and submissives. My art partner Shiranda (now retired) also had a primary interest in lesbian BDSM themes. Women have a much betterdeveloped sense for dominance and humiliation than me, sometimes more subtle—which makes it difficult to draw. And I’d also much rather see two lesbians together. Even an ugly lesbian looks better than a guy. TABOO: There’s often a strong element of racial or class hostility in your work—privileged white girls enslaved in ghettos or taken prisoner in brutal and backward countries. The rich and powerful are also shown as heartless demons. HINES: Injecting class considerations into BDSM gives it a bit more of a bite. I consider the racial angle mostly a matter of class. And I can tell you the rich and powerful are rather heartless. It comes with the territory. It’s always interesting to me how the privileged react when they’re on the bottom, so to speak. TABOO: Unlike some other artists in this genre, you don’t seem inclined to make the content visually appealing, which gives your images a certain power reminiscent of Hieronymous Bosch. HINES: I’m glad you mentioned Bosch. I’d not given thought about his influence on how I draw. I’ve been criticized by a few BDSM artists about how my characters are not “pretty” enough. Sometimes I make an effort to make my victims more attractive but that’s usually in order to create a greater contrast between the Dominants and the submissives. TABOO: Does this style reflect how you see the world in general? HINES: Yes. TABOO: Another common theme in your comics is the humbling and enslavement of sisters or mothers and daughters. Why is that dynamic so appealing, not just to you, but to your audience? HINES: Again, it adds more of a seldom-used bite to the art or story. I see that other artists began to work in this genre after I started doing it more and more. But again, I happened upon it while looking at Farrell’s drawings. I think that it’s a deep, unspoken fantasy to be able to capture and use an attractive mother and her adult daughters, especially when they are from the upper castes or from a criminal family. Usually, the wife and her daughters purposely overlook the activities of the ruthless father/family, so it’s a kick to put them in situations where they are semi-innocent but still forced to pay a humbling price. I think this theme resonates among the viewers. TABOO: Many of your vicious lesbians are also heavily tattooed and pierced. Do their body decorations suggest a particular meaning to you? HINES: I use it to indicate that these women are deep into the “life” and hardcore. If you’ve seen hardcore lesbian-involved sex shows, you’ve probably noted the prevalence of tattoos on the Dommes. TABOO: Slavery is a universal practice in your imaginary universe. Why do both men and women find the idea so exciting? HINES: I think that the genre’s viewers find it exciting because it’s the ultimate powerful versus subservient relationship fantasy. TABOO: What characteristics do you think make a female slave particularly attractive? HINES: Though this isn’t easily captured in artwork, I think a slavish lady is one of the best fucks because she really tries to please by her movements and willingness to accept the desires of her Dominants. This is reflected in the sounds she makes while you ride her; her sweat and her perfumed scent, especially when you’re nuzzling against her neck and ear. That said, one also has to stay aware that, in real life, a committed female submissive really controls the action or situation by the degree to which she submits to her Dominants. Submissives seem to orgasm more deeply and frequently because they choose the type of partner and the type of action that arouses them. For me, the ideal slave is a tall, tight and hip-moving/bucking gal who oozes and leaks. TABOO: It’s been suggested that some of your evil Mistresses appear to have been submissive at one time themselves. Do those who survive slavery sometimes end up on the other end of the whip?

HINES: Quite a few of the Mistresses I have known first got into the life as submissives. TABOO: There seems to be a kind of black, sardonic wit to some of the bizarre situations you envision. HINES: I tend to avoid “white-bread” BDSM scenarios. I try to keep my particular fans entertained and listen closely to their feedback. TABOO: You usually build a series of images around a certain concept rather than telling a linear story in the customary style of comic narration. HINES: I tend to easily bore of drawing the same characters repeatedly. It’s a struggle even to keep from straying out of a six-pic series theme into unrelated subject matter. TABOO: Your images often combine the horrific and the erotic. HINES: The two can be interwoven to double, even triple the shock value. TABOO: Are you working on some new concepts now that you’d like to share with us? HINES: I plan on emphasizing the facial features of both the Dominants and submissives in my series while shortening the texts. I think that this slight change will appeal to my viewers. TABOO: Do you think we’ll ever see a more conventional narrative comic from you, or will you continue to work with individual tableaux? might it be like? HINES: I’ve long wanted to ink in a comic and have it colored and text-ballooned or texted by someone else, but so far, I haven’t been able to hook up with someone to make that happen. If I do, it should make for some nice TABOO ILLUSTRATED comics. Another possibility is to do them in a more loose-comic style like shoes in the ’70s. TABOO: You seem to regard your monsters with a certain sympathy and lack of moral judgment. HINES: The activities of a monster can be used as a convenient allegory for mankind. After all, the most conscious “monsters” have been human. In our news, the human monsters have tended to be the waste-results of their upbringings and circumstances, although I have met many, many others of similar circumstances who became the best kind of people one could meet. A look at our news reveals quite a few monsters: Congo and Rwanda, Kosovo, the Middle East, South America, the States; almost everywhere and on all sides in those conflicts you’ll encounter them. A supernatural or fantasytype monster can be viewed or presented with sympathy or neutral judgment. A real-life monster cannot. Our real monsters take many forms: slumlords, crooked Wall Street speculators, Euro classers, drug dealers, premiers, presidents, political parties. It’s good fun to include them as both villains and victims in our BDSM artwork. Ì

Any suggestions? —Bubba the Lube Sponge Dear Bubba: Both of the water-based lubes you mentioned are glycerin-free, and glycerin-free water-based lubricants tend to dry up faster than water-based lubes that contain glycerin. One glycerin-free lube you may want to try, however, is J-Lube. J-Lube is made and sold as a lubricant for veterinarian gynecology, but several BDSM stores and sites carry it, since it’s a favorite among fisting fans. It comes in powder form and you add water to it, so you can mix a small batch and add more water to thin it out. People rave about J-Lube as it tends to be really slick and doesn’t dry up quickly. You could also try a water-based lube with glycerin like Astroglide Gel or ID. Fair warning: You may not gain that much more time by switching to a lube with glycerin, since the tissue of the anus and rectum does absorb water no matter what. Dear Looking: If a sex toy has a smell, it most likely contains phthalates, a softening agent commonly used for PVC or vinyl. PVC items that have phthalates are not completely inert; therefore they “off gas” chemicals, giving them a smell and a greasy film. They can cause genital irritation in humans and have been linked to major health problems in animal studies. I don’t recommend exposing any orifice to them. It’s true, however, that most of the really big butt toys on the market seem to be made of vinyl. The cost of manufacturing a large silicone toy is substantial, reflected in the retail price. Companies hesitate to make the investment if the product won’t sell. There are some exceptions, however. Tantus offers a silicone butt-plug called “A-Bomb.” It’s about 21⁄4 inches in diameter, which is less than you asked for, but I personally think it’s a great warmup for fisting. Vixen Creations makes a short, thick, fat dildo, “Randy,” that may also suit your needs. NS Novelties offers a line of big butt toys under the Renegade label.
