Thankful AS NOVEMBER ROLLS AROUND, WE’RE ANXIOUSLY AWAITING THE APPROACH OF THANKSGIVING, THE HOLIDAY SEASON AND TIME SPENT WITH OUR LOVED ONES. The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us— remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations or charities giving back locally. We hope that as you read this issue, you—like us—find inspiration in the lives and experiences of your neighbors and the connections that have been made. Happy Thanksgiving!

THE VININGS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

VILLAGE CIVIC CLUB THE VININGS VILLAGE CIVIC CLUB HAS A MISSION AND A DUTY TO THE VININGS COMMUNITY. Its members strive to know their community and their neighbors, keep Vinings beautiful, keep the community informed and support their local public service organizations. This historic club has its roots from the early 1900s; just take a look at the club’s newly preserved bylaws from 1919 at the Vinings Historical Preservation Society on the corner of Paces Ferry and Paces Mill. Since that time, the club has been a place for neighbors to meet, keep up with happenings and have a say in the changes being made in the community in order to maintain the “quaintness” of Vinings.

18

Vinings Lifestyle | November 2018

The club now has more than 250 members which include not only our residents but many of local Vinings businesses. This organization serves not only as a focal point for our community spirit, but also as an endeavor to encourage civic improvements that will continually maintain the character and beauty of Vinings.

VILLAGE CIVIC CLUB

(CON TI N U ED)

The VVCC conducts quarterly cleanup outings to keep Vinings beautiful as well as political forums so that residents can hear from candidates firsthand. One of the improvements the Vinings Community Conservation Alliance has been heavily involved in is the proposed Vinings Bypass. This effort to divert pass-through traffic from Vinings is an ongoing project the VCCA has spent hundreds of hours on. Even though most of our members are not passthrough drivers, diminishing the pass-through traffic would benefit us all. Word of mouth could help reach the broader audience. From those working with the county, word is the Paces Mill/ Paces Ferry intersection work will take nine months to complete. Bids are to be let by November of this year. It is hoped the disruption will prompt motorists to seek alternate routes. The committee plans a series of signs along Cobb Parkway/Northside Drive to encourage people to take this alternate route: the Vinings Bypass. The flow bypass will continue up Cobb Parkway., left on Cumberland Boulevard, to Wilkerson Parkway, to Spring Hill Parkway, to Paces Ferry where the Panera Bread restaurant is located. A map of the proposed Vinings Bypass is located on the website, ViningsVillageCivicClub.com.

“AS A PART OF THE VININGS BYPASS AND INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT, THE ISLAND AT THE INTERSECTION OF PACES MILL AND PACES FERRY WILL BE NO LONGER. WITH THAT, OUR BELOVED FOUNTAIN THAT SITS ATOP THE ISLAND WILL BE MOVED TO PROPERTY BELONGING TO THE VININGS HISTORIC PRESERVATION SOCIETY—LIKELY THE PACE HOUSE—WHEN CONSTRUCTION BEGINS IN EARLY 2019.” The Vinings Village Civic Club meets on varying Monday’s of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Cochise Club. Soup is

GOOD

for the

SOUL

T

his is definitely the easiest and best way to make rich-tasting butternut squash soup, without having to peel and dice a large,

awkwardly shaped vegetable. You start by cutting the squash in half lengthwise and roasting it in a hot oven. Scrape the roasted flesh from the skin, and simmer it with sautéed yellow onion, fresh sage, and a tart Granny Smith apple. When everything’s soft and the flavors have melded, purée it all in the blender. Finally, enrich the soup with a bit of heavy cream.

1. Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on the baking sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves (alternatively, you can rub it on evenly with your fingers). Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel, core, and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the apple, onion, and sage, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened,

The Vinings United Methodist Church has memorialized around 6,500 names of murder victims on large black walls. The holiday season is upon us, and this is the time where those loved ones taken too soon are missed the most. If you or someone you know is a victim of a crime, consider reaching out to Crime Victims Advocacy Council for support and guidance. The Crime Victims Advocacy Council was organized in July 1989 under the guidance of an urban ministry program of the United Methodist Church to respond to the unmet needs of crime victims in our society. It responds to crime victims with understanding and help regardless of the victim’s race, sex, national origin or religious beliefs. While CVAC is a Christian-based organization, it is nondenominational in its membership and support and serves all crime victims regardless of their faith. CVAC helps victims of crime by working with local, state and federal partners. CVAC offers assistance to everyone in the following areas:

CVAC provides a safe, supportive place where victims of any type of crime can find understanding and help through sharing their tragedies and triumphs, their pain and healing with one another and can begin to put their lives back together. A multitude of emotions can leave victims feeling overwhelmed and extremely isolated. Through group discussions, participants learn how to avoid becoming immobilized by depression, discover methods to cope with fear and anxiety and learn coping skills to handle the many

tasks and decisions they face. Support groups meet Tuesdays at the Vinings United Methodist Church from 7:30-9 p.m.

BE YOUR BEST

TURN GOOD INTENTIONS INTO CONTRIBUTIONS ARTICLE FLAVIA TELES PHOTOGRAPHY EDITED FROM ONLINE SOURCES

01

DONATE TIME OR MONEY Have your family help out at a soup kitchen; donate money or things you no longer need

to a charity. Local charities such as MUST Ministries convert your donated clothing, books, toys and household items into cash for their shelters, food pantries and job training programs. No matter what surplus you have, there is always someone in need. + MUSTMinistries.org + SalvationArmyAtlanta.org + Goodwill.org

02

IMPROVE HEALTH Several volunteer programs bring comfort to people of all ages: you can cuddle babies awaiting

adoption in a neonatal intensive care unit; perform tasks for homebound seniors; visit with sick patients; your dog can be trained and certified as a therapy dog; your family, friends, or co-workers can bond as a group while being kind to others. + GAEMS.net/georgia-hospitals

your own skillset. It might be the most rewarding way to help someone achieve financial self-sufficiency. Here’s how you can make an impact: + VolunteerMatch.org + CatchAFire.org + NationalService.gov

BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN Volunteer for the betterment of your city. Young people benefit from the training and work

experience they receive, and adults get a chance to enrich their lives. Choose a cause you care about—the environment, animals, children welfare, health and human services, public safety, emergency response, education, historic preservation and legal services. + CobbCounty.org
