HEY #SOFU! I can’t believe it’s time for back to school AGAIN. It's as though we go through this every year. Well I guess we do, but it doesn’t make it any more tolerable. The summer seems to fly by, like a car on the racetrack, merciless. Just running over whatever is in its way. When did summer become so cruel? Remember when we had 3 whole months off for summer? These poor kids, having to cram summer fun into just a few weeks. And us parents! Having to spend time with these little boogers. We have to work, and camps are a whole lot more expensive than they were when I was coming up. Good gracious, I sound like my grandmother! I speak in jest, of course, but it really doesn’t seem like our kids get their full due. I must admit, I’ve had a blast with my kids this summer. We’ve gone on walks, worked out together, made weekly runs to the library, written book reports. Shoot, I even had my kids working for me, so they got quite the experience. Couple that with a few vacations, and summer 2019 is in the books.

The team compiled a record of 29-1. “This was our first championship,” Coach Hankerson said. “It was for everyone who ever played Westlake basketball.” With laser-like focus, the team had its eye on a perfect season in 2019. The group graduated in June from the pilot program which offers supervisors and managers the opportunity to build effective supervisory skills in the workplace. “The key to world class municipal service delivery is world class leadership. As we build on the early successes of the City, we are thankful for the investment in our leadership made by the GMA. I am confident our executive leaders are equipped with the tools to continue to move South Fulton forward, said Odie Donald, City Manager of the City of South Fulton.” “These 19 employees have demonstrated their desire to improve the city of South Fulton by strengthening their supervisory skills and building confidence in their ability to lead,” said GMA Executive Director Larry Hanson. “South Fulton employees and residents are fortunate to have this kind of dedicated leadership that makes their community a better place to live, work and play.” The Supervisory Leadership Development Program required City of South Fulton supervisors and managers to complete 10 classroom sessions each devoted to a different topic, some of which include: how to build confidence in handling management situations, how to select, onboard, and develop new employees, time management, and team building. Tamara Zantell, CEO of Raising a Mogul™, LLC and mother of millionaire teen mogul, Zandra Cunningham of Zandra Beauty helped her 9-year-old daughter turn her kitchen table hobby into a million-dollar brand, and she now wants to teach other parent managers to do the same. “In today’s technology-driven world, kids are smarter than their parents and they can easily turn their sharp skills into something financially productive if they are getting the right support by their parents,” says Zantell. SUMMER WITH YOUR PET!

By Pickens A. Patterson III, MD What better way to enjoy the summer than with your pet? Walking your dog can be a wonderful way to spend time together and to enjoy the outdoors. With the Georgia heat early morning or late evening is probably the best time for a leisurely stroll. Make sure you and your pet are well hydrated and take frequent breaks to avoid overheating. An often overlooked, but important factor to consider when walking your dog is the heat of the concrete. On a hot day, the concrete can reach temperatures up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit! That is hot enough to cause serious burns on your pet’s paws. Because most canines have a high pain threshold they are unlikely to object or protect themselves from the hot asphalt until serious damage has occurred. The best way to avoid these types of painful injuries to your pet is to walk on grass or dirt pathways during hot summer months. We spend a lot of time in our column talking about our health and managing painful conditions, but the health of our pets is important as well. During the summer, dogs and cats are most vulnerable to heartworms which are transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. It only takes one mosquito bite to transmit this potentially deadly disease. Once infected, your pet may exhibit symptoms such as fatigue, coughing and breathing problems. There are many effective heartworm prevention strategies including shots and pills. Additionally, eliminating standing water which serve as mosquito breeding grounds from your yard will keep the mosquito population at bay. Discuss with your veterinarian to find out the best option for heart worm prevention for your pet as prevention is much safer and less costly than treatment for an infected pet.

“Thank you, Princess Hair Pizzazz, for creating a space for kids to enjoy and celebrate their hair!” –Denice Smith “The name says it all. This kids’ salon is filled with so much pizzazz, cuteness, and glamour. But most importantly, my daughter left there saying that they made her feel loved and special! It just doesn't get any better than that!“ –Lakisha Johnson

Another hazard for your pet in the summer is heat stroke. Like humans, dogs and cats can overheat and in extreme cases die from a heat stroke. Think of your dog as a baby or child, and never leave them unattended in a hot car, even if the window is cracked. A car can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures. Additionally, if your pet stays outdoors make certain that she has access to cool fresh water at all times and that adequate shade is provided. If the temperature is expected to rise above 85 degrees Farenheit, you should strongly consider bringing your pet inside. Signs of overheating in dogs or cats include excessive panting, fatigue, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea and collapse. If you suspect overheating get your pet to a cool environment and cool her with cool water especially around the head and neck area. Make spending time with your pet a healthy part of your daily routine. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do for your overall health and your pet will be healthier and happier as well!

Dr. Patterson is accepting new patients at his Camp Creek and Conyers locations.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Healthy Back to School Tips From Dr. Michelle Allen DON’T LET THE SCRAMBLE FOR NEW BOOK BAGS DISTRACT YOU. Back-to-school planning should also include your child’s health and hygiene. Dr. Michelle Allen, a pediatrician at Grady’s Camp Creek Comprehensive Care Center, recommends that children get an annual checkup or visit with their doctor to make sure immunizations are up-to-date and all developmental and health screenings are done. “Use back-to-school preparations as a way to make sure your child is protected,” Allen said. “Plus, these appointments are a good way to find out what kinds of bugs are going around each year.” She also suggests that parents teach children about the basics of a healthy lifestyle and make sure they adopt healthy behaviors. Allen suggests: + Make sure your child starts each day with a nutritious breakfast. It improves concentration and energy while boosting their immune system. + Get your child into healthy sleep habits. Inadequate sleep hurts performance and creates stress. If your child stays up later during the summer, consider shifting their bedtime 15 to 30 minutes earlier each day a week before school starts to avoid transitioning during the first week of class. + Teach good hand hygiene by reminding children to wash their hands before eating and after using school bathrooms. + Talk to your child about going back to school and any jitters, anxiety or stress associated with that. Create positive thoughts and anticipation about school. “Going back to school is a huge event in the average child’s life,” she said. “Parents should focus on all the things that will make this a good school year, and not just the shopping. A little attention to things that will keep your child healthy will help to make the school year happy and successful.” Dr. Allen is a board-certified pediatrician at Grady’s Camp Creek Center, who is determined to make a positive difference in the health and well-being of children. WORKED TIRELESSLY TO CREATE YOUNG READERS AT ASA G. HILLIARD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN EAST POINT, IT WAS A NO-BRAINER. “Sure,” she told members of the Omicron Phi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., which serves South Fulton. “You can hold monthly meetings at our school, but I’d like you all to have a presence in the school during the day as well.” For the Alphas, who execute a mentoring program at Fulton Leadership Academy in East Point among many community service projects, it was a no-brainer as well. Out of this meeting of the minds came OPL’s Reading To Kids initiative, where members of the fraternity come individually or as a group to read books, sometimes donate books and engage students in mul-

tiple classrooms throughout the school. “It was an ideal opportunity to touch more young lives in South Fulton,” Omicron Phi Lambda President Derrick Bell said. “Principal Lilly is a big proponent of reading, and so are we. Making direct contact by reading and talking to the students, letting them see what they can become, has been a rewarding experience that’s in line with the ideals of the fraternity. First of all, servants of all. We shall transcend all.” Each month members bring or select a book from Lilly and start the students’ days off with an emphatic reading and conversation that often run longer than anticipated. “I have been doing it for a while, and there is a personal satisfaction that comes with sharing your time and heart with the kids by reading to them,” said Clyde Mitchell, a fraternity member. “They are captivated with each story. And they appreciate seeing men spending time with them, especially the boys.” To volunteer in South Fulton, the Alphas had to register with the state, take a qualifying test and undergo a background check. “It’s worth every minute of my time,” Alpha Phi Alpha Member Corey Adams said. “And here’s the thing: As much as the kids get out of it, we do, too. It’s gratifying to not only read to them, but to laugh with them, hear what’s on their minds, give them a man’s perspective. They are innocent and pure and their conversations reflect that.” So far, the Alphas collectively have read to more than 300 students at Hilliard. The goal for next semester is to have an Alpha Day of Reading at Hilliard, where the fraternity brothers will read a book to every classroom in the school at the same time. “This has been a great way to show kids at a young age the importance of reading and hopefully create lifelong readers,” Bell said.
