Around Town THREE PARADISE VALLEY RESIDENTS NAMED AMONG THE BEST LAWYERS IN AMERICA 2015 The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP recently announced that attorneys Don P. Martin, P. Robert Moya and James A. Ullman – all Paradise Valley residents – have been selected by their peers for inclusion in “The Best Lawyers in America® 2015”. Since its inception in 1983, Best Lawyers has become universally regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence. Because Best Lawyers is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which more than 36,000 leading attorneys cast almost 4.4 million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas, and because lawyers are not required or allowed to pay a fee to be listed, inclusion in Best Lawyers is considered a singular honor. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”

PHILANTHROPIC SCOTTSDALE BUSINESS MAKES DONATION WITH A BIG INTERNATIONAL IMPACT In some parts of the world, children whose parents are sent to prison and who lack other guardians are locked away along with their parents. “Waiting for Mamu,” a film by Morgan Spurlock and Susan Sarandon about the CNN 2012 Hero of the Year, Pushpa Basnet, debuted at the 2014 Sedona Film Festival earlier this month in partnership with AZADI Fine Rugs, a Scottsdale-based purveyor of rugs Founded by Valley antique collector and philanthropist David Neishabori. At the presentation of the film, the producers were thrilled by Neishabori’s surprise donation of a year’s worth of rent for the Nepal orphanage that was founded to offer a safe haven for children whose parents have been imprisoned. “I was so tremendously moved by the film and the tireless work of Pushpa to create a haven for abandoned children that I wanted to help any way I could,” Neishabori says. “I will never forget the look on producers Susan Sarandon and Pushpa’s faces when we presented the gift to them at the Q&A session during the Sedona Film Festival.”

TALKING STICK RESORT WINS ‘BEST PLACE TO WORK’ AWARD Talking Stick Resort, an enterprise of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), has been named the recipient of a silver award in the “Best Place to Work” category of the Best in Biz Awards 2014 International. Those selected in the “Best Place to Work” category have demonstrated employee satisfaction and a collection of employee well-being programs including flexible work arrangements, mentoring, financial and lifestyle perks. A judging panel of 27 specialists ranked winners. For more information on Talking Stick Resort, visit TalkingStickResort.com or call 480.850.7777.

rowing up in Iran, Johnny Nikbakht only knew of America as a land of opportunity. Like many other boys, he went to school, played ball, and rode his bike with his friends, but he couldn’t express his views on certain subjects without fear of persecution, and the idea of belonging to a free society was always on his mind. After school was dismissed every day, with his backpack and aspirations of a better life in tow, Johnny would go to the bazaar with his father and grandfather to sell rugs. “I always had a passion for rugs and the craftsmanship that went into creating such masterpieces,” he says. Without ever really knowing his family’s business would one day help him achieve the American Dream, Johnny spent years working for his predecessors, as well as other companies in the industry. He ended up in Germany and Canada pursuing professional fulfillment but encountered more setbacks than rewards. In 2005, ultimately seeking the good fortune he knew was available to him in the United States, Johnny moved to Arizona.

12

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | November 2014

“What drew us to Arizona was the 365 days a year of clear and sunny weather, the clean and new city of Scottsdale, and the friendly people that reside in this town,” Johnny says. He quickly discovered a niche in the area rug market and opened PV Rugs that same year. “Our goal is to bring the best possible customer service of any rug business,” Johnny says. “We want to make our customers happy, and that pride and compassion drives us every day.” PV Rugs offers design consultations for custom-made floor coverings, with an emphasis on educating clients about the manufacturing and pricing processes. Once a design has been finalized, details are sent abroad to countries like Persia, India, Pakistan and Turkey, where the product is hand-woven or hand-knotted. Depending on the complexity of a rug’s pattern, color combination, available dyes, how many knots per square inch, and country of origin, fulfilling a custom order can take up to four years. “This is why I don’t think of a rug as a piece of mat you walk on,” Johnny says. “It’s a piece of art.” For a rug without the wait, the shop’s 2,500-square-foot showroom is open daily and displays a beautiful selection of contemporary, Oriental, Persian, Southwest, and transitional tapestries. PV Rugs also provides appraisal; repair and restoration; moth proofing; all-natural cleaning; fabric protection; and staging for model homes, weddings, and other special events. “We wanted to create a convenience for our clients and be their one-stop shop for everything rug related,” Johnny says. Johnny’s wife and two sons are helping accomplish that goal – taking charge of everything from customer interactions to bookkeeping to direct importing – while cultivating the familial business environment Johnny remembers as a kid. Years from now, as his children continue on in the business (with the possibility of additional locations being opened in the future), Johnny’s legacy will remain. Through his determination, others will learn that life as an immigrant can be prosperous – and achieving the American Dream is possible. “We plan to continue serving our loyal customers in the Valley for many years to come,” he says. “We want to be the number one rug dealer in the state and to create a mutual bond with every one of our customers that walk through our doors. This has been our endeavor for success.” Learn more about PV Rugs online at PVRugs.com or by calling 480.483.6600.

hat do you do to feel good about yourself? Buy a new outfit? Run an extra mile? Give to someone in need? However you boost your self-esteem, having confidence gives us all the fearlessness we need to face the world. Sometimes, such courage can be hard to find, especially for people tormented by hair loss, whose worlds may seem a little less inviting. Take Bryce Cleveland, for instance. At 19 years old, Bryce started balding. “My hair was everything: the Mohawks, blowouts, every color you could think of,” he says. “I was the absolute hair trendsetter. When I started balding, it felt like I was losing a piece of me, almost as if it was a limb. It affected my confidence, the way I approached situations on business, my personal life, and, of course, my love life.” Throwing on a hat was the easiest option, but hats aren’t always appropriate. Creams and sprays were always available, but they were messy and didn’t work. Eventually, Bryce considered a hair transplant, but it was too expensive, and the scars would have been obvious forever. Discouraged and desperate for a solution that would restore his self-worth, Bryce started researching hassle-free ways to achieve the 14

illusion of a full head of hair. He remembered getting pretty realistic results the time he’d used a Sharpie and wondered if there was a way to get those ink dots under the skin where they couldn’t wear off. He ran the idea by some friends, who happened to be tattoo artists, and it seemed like a hair tattoo could be the answer. After practicing with different needles and techniques, Bryce perfected a process called scalp pigmentation, which permanently implants color into the scalp. The end result is the look of new hair growth where there was none before. Unlike commercial tattooing, scalp pigmentation uses a needle small enough to replicate a thousand follicles per square inch and charcoal-based ink custom mixed to match any hair color and resistant to turning blue over time. Plus, the needle only penetrate skin’s outer layer as opposed to all three layers, preventing ink from spreading into surrounding tissue. If properly maintained, the procedure can last up to 10 years. With the concept fully developed, Bryce began working on buddies who would shave their heads just for the cause. He received such positive feedback that he decided to open his own business, Scalp Aesthetics, in Rochester, New York, where he grew up. “It just felt so good to be able to empathize

with other people,” Bryce says. “To be able to help them like I helped myself was amazing.” Bryce says years passed before the company had built up enough credibility to convince outsiders that the process is legit, but their client list eventually started growing to include even celebrities. George Farah, a pro bodybuilder (and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s conditioning coach), is a client and spokesperson for the brand. Since opening in New York in 2004, Scalp Aesthetics has expanded to 22 locations worldwide, including a facility in Scottsdale. “We really create a community of people, and they feel like they’re a part of it because they were suffering,” Bryce says. “This is a real issue. It’s something men really deal with.” Since Bryce knows that struggle firsthand and believes so strongly in this innovative solution, he is committed to spreading the love. Twice a year, Scalp Aesthetics donates a procedure to someone with cancer or alopecia. “We will start with your head and heal your heart,” he says. “It might seem dramatic, but it’s true. It’s the most rewarding thing ever.” To learn more about Scalp Aesthetics, try virtual scalp pigmentation before committing to a procedure, or schedule a free consultation, call 855. his year’s 55th Annual Heart Ball is chaired by Brenda Howard who is dedicated in increasing the awareness of how neighbors just like you and me can get involved. One way is educating students. “Fourteen states in America have made it mandatory that high school seniors be CPR certified before they can graduate. If more and more states adopt this requirement, 70,000 or more people will be trained each year and increase the awareness and involvement of saving lives,” explains Howard. Arizona is not one of those states, yet. You can help by contacting your senator, the governor’s office and other state officials, and asking them to help us get this on the ballot and help save lives. The American Heart Association offers classroom and online training. I encourage you to enroll yourself and your family in a class to learn what to do should the need arise. Ironically, when working on this article it brought a story to mind of when my husband was working for a major corporation in Southfield, Michigan. One of his sales reps went into cardiac arrest. He knew what to do before the paramedics arrived and helped save that man’s life. Fourteen years later, it was the same

man who was responsible to bringing my husband and me together here in Arizona. The leading cause of death in Arizona and America is heart disease. It’s a silent killer, almost like a time bomb ready to explode without warning. That is why, since 1949, the American Heart Association has been diligent in their mission to raise awareness and help save lives. With the proper education on preventative steps and CPR training, more lives can be saved. To help generate the necessary resources needed for medical research, the American Heart Association began holding annual Heart Balls. The first Phoenix Heart Ball was chaired by Mrs. Barry Goldwater, in 1959, and has since become the most prestigious and longest-running annual charitable function in the Valley. It’s a party held after the yearly campaign to thank their patrons and celebrate the success of their hard efforts to raise awareness and funds each year. Since its inception, the Phoenix Heart Ball, and generous donors, have raised more than $33 million which has been used for research, prevention and education in an effort to promote good heart health and combat heart disease and stroke. This can happen because the arteries have become narrowed by a buildup of fat, cholesterol or plaque. Here are some symptoms to watch for:

In addition to the donations, eight multi-year grants have been awarded to the American Heart Association totalling $1.3 million. These grant dollars have been distributed to the following five institutions: Barrow Neurological Institute, Mayo Clinic, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and the University of Arizona, Phoenix and the University of Arizona, Tucson. This year’s Phoenix Heart Ball committee consists of 90 outstanding woman who are business, civic, community and philanthropic leaders in the Valley. Teen Lifeline

T

een Lifeline started after a movie titled “Surviving” staring Molly Ringwald, aired on prime time network television in 1985. The movie spurred a public discussion on teen suicide. As a result, mental health agencies began to look at the issues raised in the movie and it was discovered that Arizona’s teen suicide rate was double the national average. Arizona ranked second in the nation for the rate of teen suicide. As a result, in 1986, through a grant from the McKesson Foundation, Teen Lifeline began as a program of Southwest Behavioral Health Services training teens from central High School. In 1988, we expanded recruitment and began taking teen volunteers throughout Maricopa County. In 1991, through a grant from the Marshall Fund of Arizona, we created an 800 number to reach teens across Arizona with a life saving hotline. Teen Lifeline is a very grassroots organization relying heavily on teen volunteers. In the early years, before social media and the internet, most of our outreach was conducted in the school and by word of mouth. Many teens learned of the hotline through a friend or family member. Many of the volunteers describe Teen Lifeline as a home away from home. Longevity is part of the legacy at Teen Lifeline. I was fortunate to have been involved with the research and development of Teen Lifeline in the beginning and have had many roles

over my 26-year tenure at Teen Lifeline. In addition, our Clinical Director Nikki Kontz started with the agency 20 years ago as a teen volunteer herself. The average length of stay for a teen volunteer is 3 ½ years. Over the past 28 years, more than 1,700 teens have participated in our life skills training program to become teen peer counselors. Teen Lifeline is growing as an organization. Our hope is to continue to expand our Prevention and Education services to reach all communities across Arizona. In fact, this year we have been able to expand targeted outreach to Prescott and Tucson.

What happens here on a daily basis is nothing short of extraordinary. Teens helping teens is what makes Teen Lifeline both unique and incredibly successful. In the next 3 years, we plan on adding texting services and expanding the hotline to teens across the nation. Before we do, we want to make sure we are meeting the needs of Arizona’s youth first. Our three programs continue to grow by more than 10 percent annually. This year we anticipate receiving over 13,000 calls, reach more the 37,000 through our Community Education and Preventions services, and we will train approximately 65 teens to staff the hotline. Our focus is steadfast, reducing teen suicide and education the public on how to help teens in crisis. Our job is to reach teens before they consider suicide as an option and help them find help and hope. Teen Lifeline is a lifesaving resource for Arizona’s youth. The peer counseling hotline itself is the heart of why we exist. We are here to save lives, and when the phone rings we get the chance. Each one is not just a call, but a child reaching out for help. They are looking for a connection. Teen Lifeline provides that connection to hope. Teens by the thousands find hope and help each year through our services. For 28 years our hotline has been a connection of hope for teens in crisis. Some call just needing a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on; others call as a last resort. Whatever the reason, Teen Lifeline and our counselors are here 365 days a year ready to listen and help. The biggest factor that separates Teen Lifeline from other crisis hotlines is the people who answer the phone. We understand that when teens want to talk about their problems, more often than not, they turn to other teens. Teens helping teens is what makes Teen Lifeline both unique and incredibly successful. Our teen Peer Counselors train for months for the chance to help someone. Our volunteers can empathize and understand the problems of the callers because, in many cases, they have or are going through the same things themselves. The Life Skills Development program pro-

vides our Peer Counselors the highest quality training, ongoing development, adult mentorship, peer support and real-world job training. In exchange for their service to other teens, these Peer Counselors learn the value of volunteerism, the importance of responsibility, fundamental communication and life skills. They continue to volunteer because they know they are making a difference. But we are more than just a Hotline. Teen Lifeline is reaching thousands more every year than with our prevention program. Through our Community Education and Outreach program, Teen Lifeline is able to reach over 36,000 people every year. Our presentations not only spread our name and hotline number, but also educate the community on important issues. This program involve diverse teaching methods that focus on increasing awareness and understanding of the problem behaviors, on acquiring or enhancing coping skills, and increasing help seeking behavior. Our prevention programs adhere to best practice standards in suicide prevention. Presentations include education on suicide prevention, bullying, stress, coping and grief. These efforts are provided to middle school and high school aged youth both in and out of a school setting and adults who are involved with youth. Our programs are implemented by staff members who are sensitive, competent, and trained in prevention and intervention methods which adhere to the American Association of Suicidology standards. Over the past 28 years, Teen Lifeline has served over half a million teens and families. Yet, we know there is more work to be done. We live in a world where 60 percent of our teenagers have thought about suicide, 1 in 6 has made a suicide plan and nearly 1 in 10 has attempted suicide. We live in a world where our teens are struggling with peer pressure, bullying, substance abuse, physical abuse, gang violence, and face limited access to the resources they need to deal with those stressors. In 2012, 33 children in Arizona ages 7-17 died by suicide (one child every 11 days). Last year we received over 12,000 calls and the number rises each year. One of every four calls deals with suicide. November 2014 | Paradise Valley Lifestyle

Hometown Hero

VETMED: A Team of Heroes Sometimes it Takes More than One Article Moriah Schowengerdt | Photography Randy Bingham

T

he definition of a hero can be left up to one’s opinion. A hero can be found in an act of kindness or finishing a courageous feat or saving a life. VETMED is a place where heroes are found each and every day.

Facts and History

The doctors and staff at the special referral and 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital are 100 percent dedicated to taking care of every patient that walks through their doors. On top of their medical expertise, their friendly smiles, kind words, and patient attitudes are sure to make every owner comfortable with entrusting their furry friends into their care. The hero responsible for starting VETMED is Dr. Arch Robertson. A selftaught veterinary ultrasound expert, Robertson became the first to start mobile ultrasound services around the valley. He did this for a decade

before opening up VETMED in 1995. The facility has been a place where heroes thrive and miracles happen ever since. Personal Stories

It wasn’t long ago that I had my own personal experience with the VETMED heroes. One night while playing with our 9-month-old English bulldog, Thor), he jumped for a toy and landed with a thud. His slow movement getting up told us something was very wrong with his back left leg. Because it was after normal vet hours, my husband and I looked up emergency vet care near by. VETMED was at the top of the list. We rushed him over and they took him right in The next morning, our local veterinarian was informed of what happened and she highly recommended the care that the doctors at VETMED would offer Thor. After talking with VETMED surgeon Dr. Stephanie Foote, we gave Thor a week in a splint to see how he would progress. A week later, Foote assessed his leg again only to find that surgery was going to be necessary. She called before he went in and after he came out of anesthesia. Her care for him, I believe, would be hard to find anywhere else. Now in his continued >

“Our Family Values Bring You The Value You Deserve!” recovery, we look forward to seeing our new friend until his leg has fully recovered. And in the event of another emergency, we wouldn’t take our Thor anywhere else. Boomer was another patient in a sticky, life-threatening situation when the heroes at VETMED came to the rescue. “I can’t say enough amazing things about the entire team at VETMED,” says owner Andy Gulick. “They took my Boomer in and never stopped caring for him. They saved his life. The doctors and techs were so attentive and the entire staff was the best. They told me to call anytime, and let me sit with my baby while he was in the oxygen ICU incubator!! He’s my little miracle thanks to the entire staff at VETMED.”

The Team

It is the collaborative work of everyone at VETMED that generates these remarkable testimonies. There are doctors working in and specializing in many different areas including ultrasounds, internal medicine, surgery, critical care and 24-hour emergency, oncology and cardiology. The support staff is also a dedicated part to this team and vital to keep it functioning. You can read about the doctors, vet technicians, administrative and more on the VETMED website. Each of us defines a hero differently. For those who have entrusted the lives and well being of their loved furry friend to VETMED, including myself, I think we would all agree that the doctors and staff there fit the mold of a hero perfectly. Next time you’re in a pickle with your pet, give your local vet a call. When they refer you to VETMED, know you are in good hands. Introducing the Work of Max Hammond Article Christi Manuelito | Photography Max Hammond

F

rom the time he was four years old Max Hammond was destined to paint, as he began on the walls of his home, a budding muralist. As he ran along the edges of the salt marshes of the Great Salt Lake, he was struck by the inescapable solitude of the vast stretches of this area, from the absolute flatness of the salt flats to the surreal quality of the marshes. It was this desolate landscape he began to paint in college. Earning a B.F.A. at the University of Utah, Hammond was formally trained, emphasizing classical figure drawing in addition to his love for landscapes. After winning a trip to Mexico for six weeks, this rural boy was struck by the way the Mexicans used undiluted colors to bring life to what appeared to be stark living conditions. It was at this point that color began to take on a new life in his paintings. Hammond left Utah to begin a M.F.A. in painting at Arizona State University where he won the prestigious Nathan Cummings award allowing him to travel throughout Latin America, where he was again saturated in a world of color and ancient abstraction. Following his thesis show, he was invited to join the Elaine Horwitch Galleries where he met with instant success. His work

is widely collected, and appears in the permanent collections of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Finova Corp., the City of Scottsdale, and the City of Mesa among others. Hammond has had solo shows nearly every year for the past 25 years. His current work occasionally returns to the figures he originally painted where he weaves in and out of abstraction, sometimes almost recognizable, then blurring to pure color, form and texture.

s I gathered things off of my desk, I noticed a folded piece of paper that I had previously overlooked. It had my name on the outside, so curiosity caused me to unfold it. I straightened the wrinkles in the paper with my hand and started reading the cursive writing. I became more surprised the more I read. Someone had taken time to write a handwritten thank you letter to me. The paper wasn’t fancy, but the words were sincere. It took only a small amount of time to write it, but the impact was significant. This simple act of gratitude made me realize how thankful I am for the people in my life. As the holidays approach, it can be easy to experience feelings of discontentment. We can look around and see all the things that we don’t have. We recognize on paper that we should be more grateful for the people, family and opportunities in our lives. Yet, in reality, comparing our lives to others can leave us becoming more and more dissatisfied with our own life. One way we can overcome feelings of discontentment is through gratitude. The object of our attention will receive our affection. If we continually focus on our lack, all we will see is lack. Yet, if we are willing to change our perspective, we can begin to see all the blessings in our lives. I am thankful for the people in my life, but I am not always communicating my gratitude to people in tangible ways. The people who challenge us to be better inspire us. The people who love unconditionally allow us to be genuine. The people whom we call family, whether relatives or not, share a special place in our lives. Of all the things that I could list, I want to be most grateful for the people in my life. 34

Paradise Valley Lifestyle | November 2014

What could we do this month to show gratitude to people? Making a phone call or sending a note in the mail is a good place to start. Maybe you can invite them over for dinner and celebrate their friendship. Sometimes we assume that people know that they are loved and appreciated, but we never actually take time to verbalize it. Instead of overlooking the people, let’s communicate to them that they are appreciated. As we gather around the table this season and remember to be thankful, let’s celebrate the blessings in our lives. Maybe you decide for the month of November that you express your gratitude to a different person in your life each day. One small act of kindness could be just the encouragement they need. As we step into a mindset of thankfulness, may it subdue any jealousy and discontentment that can easily build in our heart. May we continue to count the blessings in our lives, no matter how big or small and respond with a thankful heart. Let’s dust off the thank you notes that have been sitting in our closets too long and start sending some encouragement to someone who needs it. Saying thank you goes a long way. Maybe that person will find the note you send hidden in a desk drawer years from now, and the simple words of encouragement you write today just might have a lifetime of influence.
