Happy May, Mothers (and all) MY MOM EMILY KEPT A PINK AVON LIPSTICK, CLEAR PLASTIC RAIN HAT, WHITE COMB, A&P COUPONS AND A FEW CLEAN TISSUES IN HER PURSE AT ALL TIMES. She wore an apron on Sundays when she made dinner, still dressed for church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She served on the local symphony board, wrote thank you notes and had a stunning smile. She was a Phi Beta Kappa, studying and writing poetry, moving through her days as a mother to six children with gentle thoughtfulness and intentional efficiency. When she and my dad divorced after 36 years of marriage, they both found new part-

I loved her growing up, admired her when I became a mother and miss her now that she’s gone. In all the sweet memories of her, among my favorites are those moments when, completely out of character, she would curse. Yup, that was the best. Cursing has come a long way and back then, was kinder and more gentle. But still, when Em would drop a schnizzle* or a heck, the world came to a screeching halt. It must have been all that vocal training, but she could project, launching a dangit across

RESULTS.

Creative

MedSpa strives to meet the demands of the modern, forward-thinking men and women of Atlanta by combining the luxury of Hollywood’s celebrity skin therapy with practical, personalized treatment plans.

For Dr. Anitha Reddy, director of Creative MedSpa, this mission arises from their

commitment to guarantee optimal results with minimally invasive techniques. “Doing minimally invasive treatments on a regular basis will prolong

the need for major surgical treatments such as facelifts down the road,” says Reddy. “It will maintain the skin’s vitality for a longer time.” Unlike a regular spa, Creative Medspa is a medical skincare destination that offers top of the line medical-grade services to produce lasting, comprehensive results that are more than just skin deep. “The best you can get from a day spa is a nice temporary glow and maybe hydration for a few weeks. Here, we try to go even further,” says Medical Esthetician Bessy Teague. “You get some fluff, but we are more focused on stimulating collagen and turning back the hands of time. We nourish the skin with nutrients to not only create collagen but also heal injured cells. It’s not just moisturizing but getting in and improving the skin.” Having earned the world’s most prestigious diplomas for aesthetics and beauty therapy, CIDESCO and ITEC, Teague’s highly specialized knowledge of the skin and its reaction to various factors is a huge advantage to her clients. The extensive training required to merit this international diploma, seen as a masters degree in esthetics, and is more intense than that of a regular Georgia license. “What differentiates us is our knowledge," says Teague. "A lot of the treatments we do can injure and scar skin but we can prevent this." Creative MedSpa treats a wide range of skin types, skin tones and age groups. The flexibility to customize treatment plans to a patients’ needs is essential to be inclusive of their diverse clientele. They understand the importance of getting a holistic picture of a patient that extends pasts the superficial appearance. “Skin tone is not only what we see visually but it’s also heritage. A lot of people don’t take this into account, which can negatively impact the patient,” explains Teague. “Making sure we do a thorough consultation before starting any treatment is necessary to guarantee patients achieve their desired results.” Nothing lasts forever, but Creative MedSpa works to go the extra mile to produce radiant results that accentuate each client's natural beauty. Our skin reflects our overall state of health and thus deserves nothing but the best. We cannot control what other people think of us, but the way we present ourselves is a personal choice that directly influences these perceptions. Investing in skin therapy shows that you are not only mindful of how you carry ourselves, but also that you are observant and attentive to the world around you. “Businessmen and women come to us because their face is the first impres-

sion. Others want it because they want to feel beautiful and confident. Confident people are beautiful,” says Teague. “It has nothing to do with external beauty – confidence has to do with how you feel. If you’re feeling beautiful then you have CreativeMedSpa.com

My day rounded out with a seafood dining experience featuring fresh caught fish, lobster, shrimp, and ceviche the chefs prepared right there next to us. My last morning would be spent walking up and down the glorious beach front as I knew I’d shortly be saying goodbye to a slice of heaven (and my butler) at the Royalton Bavaro. I’d definitely be back, and was overwhelmed with gratitude that I took this much-needed time to relax, recharge, and rejoice. And next time… I might just bring my son with me, if he’s lucky. GIVING BACK

Unblocking Your Creativity Instructor Spotlight – Meet Diana Toma

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING AT SPRUILL? This September it’s going to be 4 years, oh how time flies! I still remember vividly my very first workshop at Spruill, some of the students from that class are still taking my classes regularly. Spruill is the first art center where I taught painting in a class format, and for that reason it’s very dear to my heart. WHAT CLASSES DO YOU TEACH? I now teach watercolor, acrylic and oil painting classes for adults, themed on different subject matters like portraits, wildlife, cityscapes, gardens, and also intuitive painting. My classes are centered around fast, free-flowing painting release, and creative un-blockage. BEST PART ABOUT TEACHING AT SPRUILL? The people I get to meet – I’ve created out-of-the-classroom friendships with so many of my students and other instructors. My students stay connected with each other after class as well – it’s so

ARTICLE SUE RODMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED AFTER A 20-YEAR CAREER IN RADIO SALES, RAISING A TERRIFIC SON, THREE LOVABLE DOGS, TWO RESCUE CATS AND TWO PARAKEETS, DAWN ZACHARIAH RETURNED TO THE STAGE. Act3 Productions, a community theater in Sandy Springs, soon became her home, where for several seasons she was stage manager. Today Dawn is the box office and facilities manager at Act3. She was born Chicago, grew up in Lousiville, and moved to Atlanta in 1993. Now Dawn lives in Sandy Springs with her Yorkie, Skokie.

For fine dining in Sandy Springs, Kaisers Chophouse is worth the money for juicy steaks, extensive wine list and excellent service. When I’m eating on a budget, next door is Jinya for ramen. There is always a wait and once you have a bowl of their ramen you will understand why.

2.

For a delicious authentic Mexican meal, I head to Abuelos in the Publix shopping center on Abernathy. The street tacos are so good - I get the skirt steak and their homemade guacamole is full of cilantro. I like to add lime, but that’s just me. Oh, and their margaritas are delicious.

3.

My go-to gift store is Tuxedo Pharmacy, just a smidgeon out of Sandy Springs, off Lake Forrest and Wieuca. Besides getting your prescription medicine, pick up a few unique gifts in the gift shop.

4.

The Sandy Springs Farmers Market - my favorite booth is Strive. They serve plant-based/gluten-free food and it tastes amazing. Get there early and purchase one of her cauliflower pizza slices. Her desserts are also over the top!

5.

Late night, you might find several actors from Act3 at Meehan’s Irish Pub in the Kroger Shopping center. They have a good selection of scotch and my guilty pleasure is the fried pickles. PS: Try the warm pretzels....deliciousness!

6. 7. 8. 9.

Favorite people and dog watching: The Abernathy Greenway Park. It’s also a great place to take the kiddos.

I love to head over to grounds at City Springs and relax on their porch swings. The fountains are so pretty and they pipe in music on the grounds.

For the best manicure and pedicure: Lee Nails and Spa. They offer green tea while you soak your feet.

And of course, Act 3 Productions for quality black box theater. The shows are a carefully curated mix of musicals, drama and comedy. The actors truly bring the performance to life, bringing emotions bubbling to the surface. Go ahead and buy the season, you won’t regret it. May 2019 | Perimeter North Lifestyle

ASC: A Recipe for Women's Health AS PROVIDERS AT AESTHETIC SPECIALTY CENTRE, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY EACH DAY TO EMPOWER WOMEN BY HELPING THEM LOOK AND FEEL LIKE THEIR MOST CONFIDENT SELVES. By offering a variety of treatments that enhance the natural beauty of our patients, we aid in boosting self-esteem and making birthdays slightly less daunting. Naturally, time passes and the female body changes with each new era of life; however, even though aging is a normal process, it often has negative impacts both physically and mentally, affecting women’s everyday functioning and overall wellbeing. Many women report feeling youthful internally, but their external appearances do not match the vibrant internal personas they want others to see. As a practice, our mission is to ensure women always feel and look their natural selves, just with a touch more confidence, poise and youthfulness. To achieve the ultimate goal of ‘aging gracefully,’ we address female patients’ aging concerns from head to toe with some of our favorite treatments: HAIR CHANGES Genetics, hormones, stress, hairstyling and nutrition are all factors that contribute to hair thinning and loss over the years. Fortunately, extensive research has gone into this common aging phenomenon and led to various treatment options that slow the rate of hair loss and promote increased hair growth. From both a medical and aesthetic viewpoint, our providers work with patients to identify causes of hair loss, correct these underlying triggers, and form individualized treatment plans to restore hair loss. We call it the ASC ‘Inside Out Approach,’ always evaluating patients for internal and external factors promoting hair loss and then treating the condition holistically with these factors in mind. 28
