As a kid, I’d ride my 10-speed bike down a dusty dirt road to Colony Swim Club after I’d finished my chores and practiced piano. With a towel, book, PB&J sandwich and a quarter in my backpack, I’d be set for the day. By 5:30 p.m., my mom and dad would pull up in the station wagon to swim a few laps during adult swim and we’d all head home for dinner on the back porch. Shucking corn with my little sister, both of us slightly sunburnt and smelling of chlorine, we’d listen to the crickets chirping across the dark summer sky. Finally falling into bed, with the windows wide open (who needs air conditioning in the Midwest in June?), we’d dream of doing it all again the next day. I hope your summer is magical.

As my son and I started planning our first backyard pool party, he focused on blow up rafts, however my focus shifted to refreshing and delicious mocktails for all ages to sip and savor. “LOW T WAS KILLING ME Well maybe not actually killing me, however, the effects of low testosterone (low-T) made me feel as if I were one of the walking dead. I was 56 years old at the time, a 6-year veteran of spinning indoors and road cycling. My training was consistent and included weight lifting. Being a former collegiate 4:21 miler made me expectantly competitive. Performing well in all aspects of my life was mandatory. About that time however, something began to change. Conditioning gains plateaued to a modest level. Also noticed, was an inability to recover timely from challenging training sessions, now requiring at least three days. Interim days were met with tiredness, fatigue and a feeling of dullness. Mental calculating wasn’t as sharp. Fat now hid my once six-pack abs. And here is the real kicker. … the bedroom became a stressful, confused, mental war zone. Previous spontaneous romantic interludes were now associated with feelings of performance uncertainty. Neither me nor my wife could count on the awesome benefits of a flawless romantic evening. Though supportive and accommodating, it wasn’t long before she questioned my lack of responsiveness with the possibility of me losing desire for her. We began to divert our tension away from playful flirting to household needs, children and issues at work. The communication was changing and neither of us was happy with that. ED (erectile dysfunction) was killing my manhood. ARTHUR KATZ VETERAN U.S. COAST GUARD CEO, DUNWOODY GROUP I left for Vietnam in October 1965, and returned to my wife Carol, and our first child, 4-month-old Lisa. During that year I spoke to Carol one time via something called radio telephone. Other than that, communication was by “snail mail,” which arrived in sporadic bunches, sometimes not for several weeks. As Commanding Officer of a Coast Guard gunboat patrolling the Vietnam Coast and the Mekong Delta, I was responsible for the lives of my 13-man crew. We were involved in multiple actions with the enemy, and proudly, never suffered any of our crew wounded or killed. I was and am proud to have served my country, which I fervently believe is the best in the world. Art is currently President of Temple Emanuel, Art has served on MJCCA Board for 18 years.

After training, I was assigned to several different units during the course of my time in the Army. I attended other training that was available. I spent most of my service with units in Germany. I was able to travel to other countries and work with those countries’ military units. While stationed in Germany, I spent most of my “off time” with a German farming family at their farm, and participating in Volksmarches around the country. During the Volksmarches I would meet many people from different towns in Germany. I also had the opportunity to do a lot of snow skiing especially cross country skiing. I was so proud to have served my country through my time in the U.S. Army. Karl is currently the MJCCA’s Director of Security.
