LIFESTYLE LETTER

"Fitness" Has Many Meanings OUR JANUARY ISSUE IS DEDICATED TO FITNESS, WHICH IS VERY APPROPRIATE SINCE MANY OF US INDULGED IN MANY THINGS OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS. Physical fitness is, of course, important to us all, and we consider this an important month for our publication.

JANUARY 2019 PUBLISHER

Sharon Duffy | sharon.duffy@lifestylepubs.com EDITORIAL COORDINATOR

Tom Bridges | tom.bridges@lifestylepubs.com

However, physical fitness is not the only "fitness" we need to assure our communities are achieving. For example, helping our neighbors stay "fit" by keeping them clothed and fed when they have had a blow to their lives, for whatever reason, should be something we all strive for. It may come to you as a surprise—or maybe not as many of our charities have found—but there are actually people in both our

communities who need help in times of trouble. So, maybe we should all get more involved in these endeavors as demonstrated by the charities we have highlighted in this issue. There are plenty more we will be presenting over the next year, which speaks to just how much of a need there is. And another thing we need to make sure that we don't lose sight of is the fitness of our children's minds. Both McKinney and Prosper offer great school programs. Inside this issue, you will hear from each school districts' superintendent. Happy New Year, McKinney and Prosper!

SPORT Volleyball TEAM

Frisco Flyers

Prosper’s Volleyball Star AMANDA REISNER ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY AZURE PHOTOGRAPHY, CHRISTIE CONNELL HAVING A FATHER WHO IS BOTH HER INSPIRATION AND MOTIVATION, AMANDA REISNER IS ONE LUCKY YOUNG LADY... WELL, SHE ALSO IS VERY TALENTED. Oh, and by the way, she is the kind of young lady who not only is a great volleyball player, helping her team win a Bronze Medal at a national event in Detroit this past June, but she finds the time to head up events for charities with some of her teammates and helps her church feed the hungry. The Bronze Medal, of course, is no small feat. Her team, for which she played middle blocker, had to battle local teams and then go through qualifying rounds in Indianapolis before earning their way to the 2018 Girls Junior Nationals. However, this smiling 11 year old seemed to enjoy every step... from hanging out with her teammates to getting to go to the Canadian border. She even smiles when she says "There were 48 teams reaching the finals, 8 of which were from Texas, and they rooted each other on". She was initially afraid of playing volleyball due to a fear of being hit in the face. She overcame that fear and, after never having been hit in the face, she encourages everyone to play!

12

McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle | January 2019

Amanda would also like to give thanks to her coach, Alex Pagan, who, despite Amanda’s lack of volleyball experience, added her to his 11U team. Most of that team, which won the bronze medal, has stuck together for the 12U team with a new goal: the gold medal!

“There were 48 teams reaching the f inals, 8 of which were from Te x a s , a n d t h e y r o o t e d e a c h o t h e r o n ”. As the photos depict, Amanda is not superstitious at all. Her favorite number is number 13, which she proudly wears on her jersey. When asked what she does in her spare time (beside practicing volleyball, doing charity work, and studying) she admits to playing the violin in the advanced orchestra in her school, which is mainly composed of 7th and 8th graders. Amanda is only in the 6th grade and is just entering her third year of playing the violin. Now, speaking of studying, her favorite subject is math and her least favorite is science. Oh, and she also likes to play soccer and basketball. Amanda also finds time to take care of her menagerie of two cats (Chloe & Boots, her favorite) and two dogs (Lucy & Daisy). Amanda is aspiring to go to college, hopefully on a scholarship to either Pepperdine or Ohio State, with the former receiving pressure from her dad, an alumnus of Pepperdine in sunny Southern California. Congratulations, Amanda! Good luck for the team this year and we look forward to your future accomplishments, both on and off the court! January 2019 | McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle

OUR TOWN TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN THE MCKINNEY/PROSPER SCHOOL DISTRICT. I have had the fortune to serve public schools in two awesome Texas cities, Tyler and McKinney. I started my career as a football/baseball coach and physics teacher at Robert E. Lee High School and ultimately

McKinney Independent School District

became an assistant principal. My first job as a principal was afforded to me at James S. Hogg Middle School. Shortly thereafter, I was given the opportunity to serve as the principal of Robert E. Lee before coming to McKinney in December 2005. The intent was hiring all personnel at the new McKinney Boyd. A number of years later, I was given the opportunity to come to the central office to serve as assistant superintendent. I was named superintendent in 2014. I have enjoyed every step along the way and believe that each job opportunity has prepared me to serve in my current role. I hope to stay in McKinney ISD for years as we have grown to truly love the city and the people whom I have the privilege to work with. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IN YOUR SCHOOL'S RECENT HIGH RATINGS? The most important factor in any rating is the day-to-day magic performed in the classroom by our wonderful teachers. MISD is quite fortunate in the sense that our district has, and continues to, attract

DR. RICK MCDANIEL, SUPERINTENDENT ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES

the best of the best teachers our state has to offer. Couple that with the tremendous administrative leaders we have at all of our campuses and you have a recipe for sustained success. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING SUPERINTENDENT? I truly enjoy the science behind improving all aspects of the organization in every way possible. I love the challenges associated with the job and the art associated with planning and seeing those plans come to fruition. Above all else, I enjoy the relationships and camaraderie I get to experience with the wonderful people with whom I work. WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR BEING SUPERINTENDENT? With so many school functions, I simply can’t attend them all. I attend as many as I can, but one person can only be at so many events on a given night. I love students and teachers and wish I could be at every event so they know I care and support them. WHAT MAKES YOU PROUD OF YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT? Again, I am most proud of our teachers. After that, without reservation, that our schools are all first-class facilities and we strive to keep them that way. That is why bond elections are so important when it comes to the creation, renovation and maintenance of facilities. First-class facilities bring in first-class teachers, and we understand the importance of that. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. I am the firstborn of four boys. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart, Kari, for 33 years. Our daughter, Devin, now 27, also lives in McKinney. We are all Dallas Cowboy fans and believe every year that they’re headed to the Super Bowl! Aside from that, our family loves music, sports, good movies and great food. We have three dogs: Dallas, the golden retriever/ Pyrenees mix; Desi, the basset hound; and my daughter’s dog, Elvis, the wiener dog.

Smiles and photo by Dr Jensen

DR DOUGLAS JENSEN

You may have known

already that Dr. Doug Jensen is an orthodontist who has been practicing nearby in the McKinney/Prosper area for the last decade. But who knew that he is also a dual specialist in not only the art and science of orthodontics, but in the closely related field of prosthodontics as well? If you weren’t aware, prosthodontics is the specialty of high level understanding of the various dental problems, advanced treatment planning, and the carrying out of the plan with uncommon skill and craftsmanship. People seek prosthodontists when the esthetic stakes are high or when they just prefer a more highly trained specialist from the get go. This blending of specialties provides for a skill set virtually unheard of among dental professionals.

3595 S. Custer Road, Suite 200 McKinney, Texas 75070

(214) 842-8106 JensenOrthodonticArts.com

In addition, he strives to provide what has become hard to find in most orthodontic practices, such as:

• Honesty and sincerity • Staying on time • Sharing progress at each appointment • Sweating the little things • Motivation to get your smile right • Keeping things light and fun But where the rubber really meets the road about you or your child’s teeth and all things smile—that is, expert care performed at the highest level—there is quite literally not a more highly trained and experienced craftsman in this area of dentistry than Dr. Jensen. And on top of that, he is quite inclined to listen to your concerns and work hard to create that beautiful smile you’ve been dreaming about. Come experience a true craftsman and determine for yourself why so many patients refer their friends. Even dentists and other orthodontists themselves come to Dr. Jensen to get their own smile fixed properly. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!

both men and women. We are thrilled to see boxing becoming a hot fitness trend, especially among women. Seeing them leave our clubs with an unmatched sense of empowerment is a wonderful motivator to continue the growth and development of our brand ... By building both mental and physical strength and confidence, we’re enabling these women to achieve their hopes and dreams.” Besides all the emotional and physical benefits, there are some added perks. The camaraderie among the members is outstanding. Plus, the club gets involved with various charities during the year, so it is your chance to give back to the community. (See the Good Times section in this issue, “Turkey Burn at Title Boxing Club.”) So, if you think you are too out of shape, go to the website and see how a club helped a man who weighed 600 pounds lose 250 of it in 15 months. If you think your child is being bullied and you want them to learn to defend themselves, consider getting them a membership. If you think you are too old, think of the 82-year-old member who is a regular at the club. There simply is no excuse—as long as, with any exercise program, your physician approves—for you not to drop in and meet Justine and her staff to try out their program. You might just fall in love with boxing.

I JUST LOVE COOKIES. I love them more when I feel like they are “good” for me. These cookies use essential oils to give some added benefits to their tasty and spicy flavor.

ESSENTIAL GINGER COOKIES INGREDIENTS

+ 3/4 cup softened butter + 2 cups sugar + 10 drops ginger essential oil + 10 drops cinnamon essential oil + 10 drops clove essential oil + 2 farm-fresh eggs + 3/4 cup molasses + 2 teaspoons white vinegar + 3 1/2 cups flour + 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Cream butter, sugar and essential oils in a large bowl. Add eggs, molasses and vinegar. Blend baking soda with flour and slowly add to wet ingredients. Adjust flour based on consistency of dough. You want malleable dough that is still moist. 3. Form 1-inch balls of dough and drop on baking sheets covered with parchment paper. Do not flatten to maintain nice chewy texture. 4. Bake for 10 minutes and let cool.

GIVING BACK

Empowering Servant Leaders KIDS PROSPER KIDS— PROSPER IS ALSO A VERB ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED, NICO RAY

A MOVEMENT HAS BEEN GENERATED OUT OF THE COMPASSION OF A NUMBER OF 10-YEAR-OLD KIDS JUST A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. They were Prosper students in a class taught by Kimberli Brackett, who had been involved for a number of years with an organization called Touch A Life. That has helped trafficked children in Ghana find hope and freedom. Kimberli gave her students the opportunity to have a free-thinking “Genius Hour” to simply use that time to think about what they wanted to do in life. She had placed pictures in the corner of her classroom of the trafficked children of Ghana, and, to her delight, some of these young people said what they wanted to do was to help the kids in Ghana. To do it right, they needed to form a nonprofit organization and were fortunate enough to have a local guru on the subject, Dale Hart, visit them and answer all their questions about forming a 501(c)(3). Out of that meeting, a beautiful organization, Kids Prosper Kids, was born. It is simply amazing what these wonderful youngsters have done in a short period of time. The two-year anniversary for the organization is on Jan. 29. In its short life, it has grown to about 160 support members, ranging from the fourth grade through the 12th grade. In just four months, they raised more than $20,000 towards a school for these children of West Africa. And those children? If you speak with one of the students, like Nico Ray, who has been creating a documentary for the organization, they are all amazed as to how happy and appreciative the recipients are. He deemed it a “huge learning experience” and is eager to return to finalize the film. As the subtitle says, "prosper" is also a verb. They want to encourage anyone, anywhere to get involved. Students from any school should consider becoming part of this growing phenomenon that is focused on creating positive change in a selected global environment. By working with the government leaders from Ghana, the Prosper Life International School will help address the generational poverty, high unemployment rates, and, ultimately, help mitigate the trafficking of young children in Ghana. 26

McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle | January 2019

Those kids who were the beginning of KPK have already created something most adults never do: a platform of involvement and a voice to:

+ Identify, build, sharpen and use their talents, passions and gifts for good purposes.

+ Learn the power and value of inclusion, diversity, integrity, commitment and accountability.

+ Practice servant leadership principles. + Create positive, lifelong habits that enrich both their own lives and the lives of those around them. It is no wonder that the Prosper Chamber of Commerce voted Kids Prosper Kids as the Best New Business for 2018. MASTER YOUR ATHLEISURE STYLE WITH HELP FROM THE STYLISTS AT TRUNK CLUB

WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND FITNESS TRENDS, KEEPING UP WITH THE EVER-CHANGING INFORMATION THAT’S OUT THERE CAN BE DIFFICULT. “This one move will change your legs forever;” “You’ll never eat these foods again after you read this story;” or, our favorite, “A glass of wine a day can help you live longer.” When you’re busy juggling the latest workout app craze or cleaning out your refrigerator only to find out a week later that those items are good for you again, it can get overwhelming. So, when you want a break from it all but don’t want to give up feeling sporty, take the trends from your yoga mat to your closet instead and stock up on athleisure wear. As the stylists at Trunk Club, a Nordstrom Company, put it, athleisure isn’t necessarily about working out—it’s designed for a lifestyle. Incorporating chic, comfy silhouettes with sporty pieces gets you through the day with a fashionable vibe you’ll want to sport—no pun intended—on the regular! For more style tips and to get your own trunk today, visit TrunkClub.com.

The Trunk Club stylists recommend faux-leather leggings and a scoop-hem tank as an easy way to take the essentials up a notch. Finish off your look with a lightweight jacket, a baseball cap and a backpack with unique detailing for just the right amount of edge.

BETHLEHEM

PLACE

WAS

STARTED

BY

PROSPER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN THE 1980S. But how Prosper has changed just in the last few years. What hasn't changed, however, is there are still people who need help. Luckily, Bethlehem Place is still around to help feed them. No wonder it is called "Prosper's food pantry." The current executive director is Betsy Winters, who had raised five children. Once they were all off on their own, she decided to become more of an extrovert. She has previously served as a committee member with the Prosper Ladies Association, a member of the Prosper Rotary, Prosper Ladies in Leadership, as well as being active in her church. When the previous director had to resign on quick notice, Becky became the director in October 2016. She salutes her fantastic team for helping overcome her learning curve in the new role. However, the team, none of whom get paid for their efforts, is challenged over the next couple of years to raise awareness of the needs in a community so many see as affluent. Other challenges are to continue to grow outside of PUMC, acquire a better building and take on even more opportunities to help the needy so they keep their 200-plus volunteers busy. Betsy is confident that she and her team will take Bethlehem Place to a new level. "It's amazing how much one person can do by contributing something they see as so little," she says. Just think, a couple of cans from your pantry could help make a meal for a family. The food bank hours are Tuesdays from 5:30-7 p.m., at 107 S. Church St. in Prosper.
