Letter from the Creative Director

W

ith summer in full swing, my house has become a revolving door of neighbor kids and friends coming and going, continual trips to the grocery store, campouts in the backyard (by the way, birds start chirping at 4:00 a.m.) and baseball, baseball and more baseball. It seems like no matter how hard I try to keep our summers from filling up with too much busyness so that we can enjoy the relaxed schedule, it always has a way of flying by. It feels like summer just started, and here we are at July already. How can it be?!

I usually start my summer off with a bucket list of activities to accomplish. The list consists of a mix of fun activities we do as a family every summer, new places we want to try and lofty goals of summer enrichment for my kids. I hate to admit it, but we generally only get to about half of the list, and the summer enrichment goals are often times not as enriching as I originally dreamt up. However, it seems like the things that are unplanned like a spontaneous early morning walk with one of my kids or a pickup game of one-on-one basketball with my son ends up being the moments I treasure most. The older my kids get, the more I want to make every summer count and to be filled with fun memories, big or small. One of the best things about summer is grilling out and all the fresh summer foods. We wanted to share a few favorite summer recipes with you in this issue, as well as a couple of easy homemade ice cream recipes for a treat on a hot summer night. We may have polished off the ice cream after shooting the food spread, so speaking from experience, that strawberry ice cream is amazing. Plus, it is easy to adapt the recipe to be dairy-free if needed. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many great things our city has to offer in the summer months and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

HOPE FOR FAMILIES, BRAIN BALANCE IS UNIQUE The Evans family knows what it is to love a child who struggles. They found lasting change when they discovered the Brain Balance program for one of their four sons, and that is the reason they have opened Brain Balance of Lee’s Summit at 413 NW Murray Road. Brain Balance is a nonmedical approach that addresses a variety of behavioral, social and academic issues. There are two distinct parts: scheduled activities at the center where students will visit three times a week and at-home activities that are equally important. It is a coordinated and systematic approach connecting all the

dots for each child with support the family needs to complete the program successfully. Children’s needs vary and so should the frequency and duration of the regimen. Each program is regulated, monitored and customized to dial up the actions needed to overcome developmental deficits. Brain Balance identifies where those deficits exist and creates the customized program that addresses the root cause and provides the support. BrainBalanceCenters.com

osh and Lanni Edwards are beer tourists. When they travel, they seek out the convivial

environment of local brew pubs that feature great local beer and food, but that aren’t too formal to enjoy a meal with their three children, ages 5 through 9. Wanting to create a place in Lee’s Summit like those they enjoy during their travels helped inspire the contractor, a Lee's Summit native, and his father, Jeff Edwards, to open Smoke Brewing Company's gastropub in the city’s downtown in March 2017. “We have a love for manufacturing, a love for beer,” Josh Edwards says of his homebuilding family, who worked for months to completely gut and then restore the 10-barrel brewhouse and restaurant at 209 SE Main St.

In January, they brought on chef Dan Patterson to lead in menu development for the gastropub. With stints at Kansas City’s The Sundry and Story restaurants and, most recently, The Rieger restaurant, Patterson honed his focus on meat production. He brings raved-about barbecue to downtown Lee’s Summit but also has an interest in getting locals to sample menu items that may be out of the box. Patterson will have the chance to express his creativity in the crafting of Smoke’s seasonal menu and the development of the gastropub’s beer dinners. While Smoke’s barbecue has been well-received, Josh Edwards says his goal for Smoke is something bigger than another local taproom restaurant. Edwards plans for the barbecue and beer to remain in downtown Lee's Summit but also to begin distribution within a year.

THE PERFECT PAIR Smoke debuted five house beers on tap at its opening. Brewers continue expanding their repertoire to feature seasonal specialties perfect for sipping during summer evenings on their patio. Edwards and Patterson offer beer pairing tips featuring house brews and menu items. Get creative and use their suggestions as a template for your own straight-from-the smoker backyard feasts. SAISON DE ETRE: This summery beer pulls floral and peppery

and is dry on the finish. Pair it with brisket street tacos topped with chimichurri and cotija cheese. BLACK SPRING DOUBLE BLACK IPA: Chinook and Magnum hops

lend a strong, bitter, hop-forward character to this prototypical West Coast IPA. The piney notes and slight spice character pair perfectly with smoky Louisiana hot wings. SCOTTISH TATTOO: This wee heavy-style beer is very strongly

malt-forward and biscuity in character. The peat-smoked malts impart a hint of smokiness. Pair this heavier, high-ABV beer with a lighter-bodied dish that carries a stronger flavor punch. Try it with Smoke’s pan-roasted salmon with compound butter, corn risotto and grilled asparagus or a spinach salad with blue cheese and brisket. JUICE: This New England-style IPA has a pronounced grapefruit

nose and a fruity, juicy hop-forward body with a crisp, bitter finish. Motueka hops impart a citrus lime character and Brambling Cross hops pull spice. Pair Juice with smoky sweet competition-style ribs or brisket street tacos. BLACK UDDER MILK STOUT: With its roasted malt flavor and touch

of sweetness, this smooth milk stout tastes like breakfast to Patterson. He suggests a creative take on the breakfast theme, pairing it with Smoke’s onion pancake and pork blade burnt ends. PILSNER: This prototypical American pale lager pairs perfectly

with Smoke’s briskwich, an amped-up brisket sandwich, or their house pit master burger.

Smoke Brewing Company, 209 SE Main St., Lee's Summit, MO, is open 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Visit SmokeBrewingCompany.com for more information. 14

hat emotion that permeates your being as you untie the mooring,

as the sunlight gleams across the polished wood planks. You ease out into the water and hear the hum of the engine. This is what a group of like-minded men crave and seek. That is the aura of a wood boat. Since the dawn of time, people have nailed, glued, sawed, planed and crafted wooden floating vessels. Thanks to some classy guys, a group of these classic wood boats dots the waters of Lake Lotawana on any given day. Bill Sharp, president of the new Lake Lotawana Wood and Classic Boat Club, has a long-standing passion for wood boats.

16

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | July 2017

“Jack Schwindler has always had a special affinity to wood boats, and when he opened his restaurant, Marina Grog and Galley in 1993, one of the first things you would see on the walls of his restaurant were models of wood boats and sailboats,” Sharp says. When Schwindler found out Sharp was restoring a 1965 Century Coronado in his garage, he dropped by weekly to view the progress. “It took me two and a half years, and all that time Jack would reminisce about when the lake was nothing but wood boats, and how wonderful it is to see them back on the lake again. This grew into him telling me he would be willing to hold the boat club meetings in the Bay Club at the restaurant,” Sharp says. The club's members agreed to meet the last Sunday of each summer month for the purpose of camaraderie, friendship, the sharing of ideas about wood boats and taking a group boat tour of the lake. The club currently has 14 members who own 10 wood boats and one Amphicar. They opened the club up to include "classic boats," which include boats, including ones made of fiberglass, made before 1970.

Members of the club are Sharp, Chairman Emeritus Jack Schwindler, Vice President Tim Wahl, Treasurer Kevin Jones, Historian John Belger III, Secretary David Wysong, Carl Chinnery, Howard Chamberlain, Rich Orr, Dave Needles, John Belger IV, John Gentry, Paul Guigon, Brian Tillema and Dr. Dave Tillema. Sharp's boat, like all these classics, has an intriguing story. His recalls his love for the boats that began in 1993 when he saw John Belger’s 1966 Century Coronado. “John remembers seeing the boat running around the lake when he was a kid. He actually purchased it from the Atha family, who purchased it new in 1966 and had it delivered to the marina at the lake, which was a working CONTINUED >

Wysong has always wanted a wood boat since moving to Lake Lotawana in 1985. He craved to own one for 20 years. “After buying a 1930 Chris Craft Model 100 in 2006, I began to really respect boat making of the past,” he says. “Wood boats, especially those with historical names of companies that make them, including Chris Craft, Century, Hacker Craft, Riva and a few more, are truly pieces of art. I simply grew to appreciate the way they are made and the care their owners take.” 18

Does an affair matter in divorce? Stange Law Firm, PC

With the advent of no fault divorce, many think that fault no longer matters. As it relates to divorce, the viewpoint is that an affair does not matter at all. Some think that courts will look at it and give it no weight. In the end, the view is everything is going to be divided in half anyway. Child support and maintenance is going to be what it is. And in terms of child custody, many think an affair is irrelevant. Is this correct? The reality is that this viewpoint is not accurate in many states. It is true that to get divorced, parties do not have to show fault for a divorce to be granted. Prior to the advent of no fault divorce, parties would have to show fault like an affair, abandonment, emotional cruelty, violence or some other fault of some kind to get divorced.

30

Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | July 2017

But with no fault divorce, that is no longer required. The exact language varies by state, but generally speaking, parties simply have to show that a marriage is irretrievably broken to get divorced. However in terms of marital property and debt division, and spousal maintenance (alimony), many states still allow the conduct of the parties as one of the factors in terms of making that determination. States like Missouri and Kansas fall into that category. However, Illinois excludes fault as a consideration by statute. But in terms of child custody, an affair could still have an effect in most states, as long as it has a bearing on the best interests of the children. In cases where an affair can be pointed to having a negative impact on the children and their custody or parenting time with either parent, an affair could still

be looked at for custody and parenting time determination. LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS SERVING (CON TI N U ED)

“After I was out of the service, while feeling very satisfied with my career as a firefighter, there were still many aspects I missed from the military,” he says. “I commissioned as an infantry officer not only to serve again but to grow myself as a leader as well. I feel like I want to make a difference. If that means being there to help somebody when they are having the worst day of their lives as a firefighter, or being there as a leader to take care of those trusted to my care.” That dedication to serve extends to his community through being on the fire truck or ambulance, serving those assigned to him or serving our country, doing a job only 2 percent of the population has done. He admits that most of the time it is not glamorous, but the ability to serve people is very self-fulfilling. “I truly enjoy living in Lee's Summit while simultaneously serving its citizens. I feel blessed to be raising my family there, sending my kids to school there, and supporting my wife, who starting this next school year, will be a teacher with the Lee’s Summit School District,” he says. “Being a part of the community, and, in turn, the support my family gets from the community in my absence, is something I don't take for granted.” Words to live by, for all of us, as we celebrate the Fourth of July.
