Letter from the Editor I LOVE A GOOD HOME PROJECT. There is something invigorating about freshening up a room with new paint, bringing in a splash of color with throw pillows, or updating a room with a total transformation. I am a DIY'er by nature and always have something I am working on, but my latest project has hands-down been one of my favorites to date. My sister and I had the privilege of turning an office space into to a baby’s room for

someone who is very close to us. What made this project so special is that this couple has been waiting to adopt a baby for quite some time, and they were unexpectedly selected as parents just a few short weeks prior to the birth. With so much to do in such a short amount of time, they didn’t have time to decorate a nursery, so we stepped in and surprised them with one upon their return from their hospital stay. So much love was poured into every detail of this room. Not only did we want the room to be functional and reflect this couple’s style and taste, we wanted it to be a space that they could enjoy rocking their new baby girl to sleep in and could be a retreat to soak in sweet moments with her. There were so many emotions as we prepared this room for their homecoming. We felt so much joy for this couple as we knew that this was the longing of their hearts and equal excitement for this baby because she was hitting the

RENOVATE & REFINE

A CREATIVE, FEEL-GOOD SPACE. THIS HOME GIVES US ALL THE DESIGN FEELS. ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL PHOTOGRAPHY LADD FORDE

THE HOMEOWNERS WERE ABLE TO COMBINE TEXTILE INSPIRATION FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO CREATE THIS COZY AND ECLECTIC SPACE. Warm red kilim and Persian rugs ground the space and add warmth and texture while the traditional patterns impart a sense of familiarity and timelessness. Indigo-dyed throw pillows add a bohemian flair inspired by African mud clothes and indigo dying techniques of Japan. Indigo has been everywhere lately—maybe because the textiles remind us all of our favorite pair of selvedge denim and a soft white T-shirt. The leather knobs on the kitchen cabinets latch perfectly onto the wooden kitchen shelves to complete the natural look of this home. Now to the bathroom. Not only is there a beautiful open view of the trees with solitary peace, but the room is also decked headto-toe with grayscale marble. If you are afraid to get your feet wet with an all-marble bathroom, maybe cold feet is a concern? Don’t worry—a vintage rug does the trick. Overall, this beautiful space is a real-life Pinterest board that has us inspired to renovate and refine. CONTINUED >

“I am inspired by anything and everything. I find a lot through Instagram, but I also enjoy going to art museums, flipping through design books and traveling. Even a quick getaway to a location that isn’t necessarily my style refreshes my eye and gets me excited to create.” For your next get-together, decorate your dinner table like the Makerista. “People tend to be intimidated by tablescapes, but the formula for a beautiful yet simple table is easy--all you really need is foliage and candles. A bunch of candlesticks down the center of your table with tapers and some greenery (be it vases of flowers or pine branches from your backyard) add life and light to any gathering.” The Makerista’s future plans involve family, designing and writing beyond her blog. “Being a stay-at-home mom to our three children is my primary objective in this season, but I’m open to what comes my way and is a fit for this time in our lives. On my list of goals this year is to write a book. We’re constantly renovating our home and sharing it all on my blog and social media. We just finished two bathrooms, and that makes my Instagram stories an outlet filled with a lot of design and sometimes some drama, too, because renovation is never dull or predictable. One of the most loved things I do is share my thrifting journeys through Instagram. I am a passionate thrifter (I have a five-part series on my blog), and it’s the thing I share that seems to resonate the most with people.”

Keep up with Hefner’s latest projects on Instagram @themakerista and online at themakerista.com. 26

Named after her grandmother, the internationally popular blog is a place where Hillyard finds connection and shares inspiration on topics of fashion, beauty, fitness, baby, motherhood and more. Here, she offers a glimpse inside her Leawood home. Clean lines are foundational, then layered with elements of elegance and texture to create an approachable style that’s simply Cella Jane. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR YOUR DAUGHTER, SUTTON’S, ROOM? I fell in love with that mural and designed the rest of the room around it. I wanted her room to feel fit for a little girl but also have some mature design elements to last through her teenage years. I really took my time with her room to find the right pieces. She loves it and so do I. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COLORS AND/OR DESIGN ELEMENTS TO USE IN YOUR HOME? I am known for my love of a neutral color palette. People always ask me how we can have light colored couches, rugs, pillows, blankets, etc. with young kids and a dog, but it's actually not as hard as you think! Now, I'm not saying that things don't get dirty or we don't have spills and stains, but it is not a daily struggle at all. Design-wise my favorite elements are anything that make our home cozy–textured rugs, pillows, throws and blankets.

» KID’S BEDROOM Our five-year-old daughter Vivienne’s bedroom didn’t need many updates. We kept the original grey paint color and simply added carpeting and decor. I wanted to make the space colorful and fun for her. The closet has functional shelving on the front and actually has a small secret passage doorway to the adjoining bedroom inside.

» PLAY ROOM Vivienne’s playroom is a fun space that only needed some fresh paint and carpeting. The teepee I made for Vivienne’s first birthday serves as the focal point of the room. There’s a cute window seat in between two built-in Murphy beds that we will probably use down the road, and my favorite feature is the “secret passageway” faux bookshelf door that opens to the attic and observatory.

» ATTIC AND OBSERVATORY The attic is a fun finished space that we use as a secondary playroom, and the only Office Nook

change we made was adding fresh paint. I love all of the built-in storage and unique character, especially the observatory. I can picture this room serving many different uses in the future—possibly a giant walk-in closet or a craft room. So many options!

» OFFICE NOOK AND SEATING AREA Office Nook

The office nook and small seating area used to be our formal dining room before we gutted and opened up the kitchen. We decided to flip-flop this room with what is now our dining room to make it better fit our lifestyle, and the updates we made were the removal of a wall, new paint, lighting, and wood flooring. I love the vaulted ceiling and sky light window and am proud to say I scored the midcentury-modern desk and cabinet for free from neighborhood trash piles. I use the office nook to store all of my craft supplies, which I use to make projects for my blog and monthly DIY TV segment on KCTV5’s Better Kansas City.
