The Heart of the Home IT'S MARCH LA JOLLA AND SPRING IS IN THE AIR. Perhaps that means you are spring cleaning or making plans to update your living space or spruce up the exterior of your home. You might find me knee-deep in an organizational project in the garage where it seems everything collects in our home and needs the most help especially with everything that comes with having two kids. I have discovered that it is best to make this an ongoing effort. However, this is easier said than done. Inside this issue, you will learn about an amazing fashion and cultural icon living here and who found her niche in our seaside community by contributing to the SD Opera. You may recognize her immediately by her signature pink hair - a trailblazer, decades ahead of her time. Oh, and she is a dame by the order of Queen Elizabeth II. Yes, a modern dame in our neck of the woods.

SAMMY’S WOODFIRED PIZZA RAISES MONEY FOR AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION All through February, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza offered a creative and tasty way for locals to easily give back through a charitable campaign called Pizza from the Heart. Special heart-shaped, makeat-home pizza kits starting at $7 each were sold, with $1 from each sale going directly to benefit the American Heart Association. Kits included housemade pizza dough, fresh mozzarella and basil, a jar of housemade tomato sauce, with the option of pepperoni. Guests were encouraged to post a picture on social media of their heart-shaped creation using #iheartsammys to win $100. Last year alone more than a thousand heart-shaped pizza kits were sold, and thanks to the generosity of local diners, Sammy’s has been able to support and give back to the American Heart Association for the last 15

Her Blood Runs Pink DAME ZANDRA RHODES
ARTICLE JENNIFER AUSTIN | PHOTOGRAPHY ZEMINA ZAFERAKIS, ZBELLA PHOTOGRAPHY
IF YOU ARE A FAN OF 70S CULTURE OR FASHION, THEN YOU SURELY KNOW THE NAME ZANDRA RHODES. This Dame, as decreed in 1997 by Queen Elizabeth II, has dressed the likes of fashion and contemporary culture’s favorites: Bianca Jagger, Freddie Mercury, Princess Diana, Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Mirren, and Kate Moss, and led the pack of designers who defined the age of punk rock and 1970s disco-glam. She found herself and her creative outlet in designing textiles. First deemed too loud and bold for the mainstream, Rhodes found her niche in the heart of the British punk, glamour, and avant-garde fashion scene that was burgeoning in London, ready to take the world by storm.

HER BLOOD RUNS PINK
(CON TI N U ED)
Rhodes came of age in the 1970s as did the love of dyeing her hair - originally green - spurred by being around textile dyes. It wasn’t until the 1980s that her signature pink coif was born. You are correct in guessing that design, art and fashion run in her blood; her mother was a fitter for the Parisian fashion House of Worth and then a lecturer at Medway College of Art. Rhodes, herself, attended Medway College of Art and then The Royal College of Art in London. She studied printed textile design and began designing dresses from her textiles. Thus, the marriage of her textiles and fashion began. The dresses brought her textile patterns to life, a symbiotic relationship if ever there was. "My textiles are an integral part of the garment that you see," she says. Rhodes originally sold these designs in her first collaborative storefront, The Fulham Road Clothes Shop in London, with Sylvia Ayton in the late 1960s. Subsequently, her clothing and designs have been carried by Henri Bendel in New York, Sakowitz, Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Fortnum & Mason in London. Rhodes had collaborated with the likes of Valentino, Royal Doulton and Adele Marie London and she is collected by fellow designers Tom Ford, Anna Sui and Ashley Olsen. Her textile designs have

a timeless and feminine quality about them and she finds inspiration from her international travels from Australia to India, Ukraine to Japan. "I am mostly inspired by travel. I love India, would love to go to Tibet, Macchu Picchu and climb it while I am still able," she shares. Her designs have a feminine nature and organic quality that looks effortless, like doodles, squiggles, flowers and wavy stripes. Although working predominantly in textiles, Rhodes has designed tableware, china, jewelry, wrapping paper and rugs. While in her 60s, when most people are enjoying their retirement, Rhodes showed few signs of slowing down and even took on new projects, including her foray into the world of opera in 2001 with the SD Opera. Then, she conceptualized and launched the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, which officially opened May 2003. But where does San Diego fit in with this London native, international traveler and design icon? She did, perhaps reluctantly, relocate here with her longtime partner Salah Hassanein when he retired, and splits her time between London and our oceanside community. The Londoner at heart mentions that the sun and salt of southern California can wreak havoc on textiles - thank goodness for air conditioning! And
Rhodes taking a selfie with a few of the SD Opera Gala Ball committee members
if it weren't for her residency in Del Mar, then her collaboration with the world of opera may not have been at all. She was asked in 2000, by then SD Opera general director Ian Campbell, if she had ever designed for an opera. Intrigued by the idea, a new facet of her design mind took hold, first designing the costumes for The Magic Flute premiering in 2001, with an encore performance in 2006. Then, in 2004, not only did she design the costumes for The Pearl Fishers, but Rhodes ventured into set design. Subsequently, in 2007, Rhodes designed both sets and costumes for the Houston Grand Opera's production of Verdi’s Aida. Her partnership with the world of opera is being celebrated this spring by the SD Opera at their annual gala. Gala Chair Sherry Ahern is over the moon to celebrate the international fashion icon, especially for the beauty and creativity that she has brought to the opera and San Diego itself. The 2018 Opera Ball - Pretty in Pink - is on Saturday, April 7, at The US Grant Hotel. ZandraRhodes.com | SDOpera.org 22

E AR TH C ONS CIOU S O PULENCE ECOLUX INTERIORS ARTICLE JENNIFER AUSTIN | PHOTOGRAPHY GAIL OWENS WHEN YOU MEET SUZI O’BRIEN FROM ECOLUX INTERIORS, ONE THING IS CERTAIN - SHE HAS MOXIE, SHE IS FEARLESS AND SHE HAS STYLE. Prior to interior design in San Diego, she started in social work in Seattle, assisting homeless and foster children in realizing their dreams, potential and guiding them into their adult lives with hope. Part of this is her can-do attitude but much of it is her passion and ethical drive. For her next chapter, she knew she had to be challenged with something to drive her creative spirit. Once she found interior design, she jumped right in. “Great design is about bringing out the heart and soul of the client...bringing that beauty and creating a nurturing, fun, beautiful home,” she says. EcoLux is a boutique design firm that works with a select number of clients each year. As O’Brien sees it, each client and project is a grand adventure of discovery. Each one of her projects is different but there is continuity within all the projects; each room is planned but looks effortless, and each space relates to the others. Finding her homeowner’s voice within each of her whole-home projects is what she considers her “sweet-spot”. It’s evident when looking at her portfolio that her designs are global, which she attributes to a love of travel and exploration. In her 20s, she lived in Thailand for a year, where she explored and collected textiles and art, and immediately understood that memories of travel bring a rich, positive expression of who we are into a home. This continues not only in her relationship with her clients but in her personal travels with her family - you can see O'Brien carrying hand-forged sinks through CONTINUED >

WOVEN + KNOTTED LIVING BOHO-CHIC WITH WOVEN TEXTURES AND MACRAMÉ Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space ... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”
