WHEN ART COMES CALLING
FOUR LOCAL ARTISTS OPEN UP ABOUT HOW ART CAME CALLING
IF I CAN BRING SOME KIND OF INSPIRATION INTO THIS WORLD, THEN I FEEL LIKE THAT IS MY JOB AND SATISFACTION.
ELINA DMITRUK OIL PAINTER Photographer-tured-painter Elina Dmitruk credits her early interest in art to a childhood friend who also was drawn to art. They began their journey with art together at a young age and have continued to push each other and support each other in their prospective careers, twenty years later. Elina is the first artist in her family, she began painting at nine years old and dabbled in everything initially until she discovered oil. She was 12 or 13 years old, taking a private art class with a Russian instructor, when she began to learn the basics of painting with oil and she continued to teach herself. Photography inspires Elina’s artwork, and she translates photos into her own style. For passion pieces, she loves painting mountains and nature, and for commission pieces she typically paints portraits, providing her the perfect balance. Prior to committing full-time to artwork three years ago, she worked as a photographer, giving her a unique perspective to her artwork. She always begins with a photograph, sometime even combining multiple photos, and spends several weeks planning before prepping the canvas. The entire process can take anywhere from two months up to a year. She puts so much texture into her art, it can take weeks to dry before beginning the next layer. Elina also paints live at Zoka Coffee Roasters and Tea Company ARTICLE LISA SCHREINER | PHOTOGRAPHY LIFE N LIGHT

ELENA MAQUE
VOCALIST AND SAXOPHONE PLAYER
A native of Russia, Elena Maque had always felt drawn to music and at the age of 14, the call was undeniable, and she simply could not say no. She had said no to music once before, when as a third-grader she had been accepted into an exclusive music school. After three grueling weeks, the wonder and joy of music disappeared and she completely quite music. However, sitting in a church in St. Petersburg, Russia five or six years later, listening to visiting musicians, she heard the most beautiful sounds she had ever heard, and it resonated so deeply within her, she began to weep. The song was “Amazing Grace” and the instrument was the saxophone. She began to take some private lessons and within a year she was accepted into a jazz school in St. Petersburg after high school, and she graduated from the music college. Fast-forward to 2008, when she moved to the United States. She found herself in Seattle without any friends or music connections. She was introduced to the Russian community and she began to play at different churches in the area and met a fellow saxophone player who introduced her to the Seattle music community. Elena joined a big band and stayed with them for about a year before beginning her own act. She had a vision of what she wanted, and she frequented jam sessions

BENZAKEIN AND HER FAMILY RUN FLORET, A FLOWER FARM SPECIALIZING IN GROWING UNIQUE, UNCOMMON AND HEIRLOOM FLOWERS.
Benzakein, considered one of the nation’s leading “farmer-florists,” runs Floret, a flower farm specializing in unique, uncommon and heirloom cut flowers. What started as a small family garden has now grown into a bustling business at the forefront of the seasonal flower movement. From the beginning, Erin has made education her focus, first with on-the-farm workshops, and now with her six-week online course to teach flower lovers around the world how to grow, harvest and sell seasonal flowers on a small scale. Floret’s online shop sells their favorite cut flower seeds, bulbs, supplies and gardening tools. The farm has recently expanded from its original 2-acre plot, thanks to the purchase of the 25-acre farm next door, and Erin is especially excited to continue testing and breeding new varieties of cut flowers.

BLOOMING FLOR AL DESIGN (CONTINUED)
Benzakein is about to release her second book, A Year in Flowers, in February. When asked what made this book different from her first, she responded, “I quickly discovered that nearly everyone struggled with the same things I had: how to approach color, basic mechanics, proper ingredient selection, and most importantly, confidence. After teaching hundreds of students how to create natural looking arrangements, I developed a tried-and-true process that reduces the guesswork and results in beautiful bouquets every time. In this book, I detail the basics of getting started with floral design, key ingredients, essential techniques, and ideas for every season.” She is passionate about people connecting through flowers. Her new book will allow the everyday artist to come alive in their very own home and way, unlike her first book, Cut Flower Garden, which was about growing flowers. She says, “A Year in Flowers is not just an invitation to incorporate local blooms into life’s biggest milestones and everyday events. It’s also a salute to the many dedicated farmers who work tirelessly to grow beautiful flowers for their local communities.”

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME
ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.
Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.
Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!
Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

tips Create the most impact by displaying (not hiding!) items that carry the best stories or sentimental value. We love the use of incorporating these smaller figurines as bookends and paperweights.
Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.
