REAL ID – NEW REQUIREMENTS STARTING OCT 1ST, 2020 You might have heard of the new requirement for boarding domestic flights or visiting Federal buildings called Real ID. Starting October 1st, 2020, a regular driver’s license or ID card will no longer be accepted as identification. You can of course use your passport, but if you are renewing your driver’s

licenses anyway, consider updating to Real ID. To apply for a Real ID, you will need documents from these categories; Identification, Social Security and Residency. Identification can be a passport, certified copy of your birth certificate or other certified documents showing you identity. Social security can be your social security card, a W2 form, a 1099 or an employment pay stub with the required information. Finally, you need two different documents showing that you are resident of Minnesota. Document examples are; an unexpired Minnesota drivers licenses, a home utility bill, a bank account or credit card statement. Make sure your name matches on all the documents you provide. A complete list can be found at REALID.dps.mn.gov.

the following; secure garbage, wildlife feeders and other food sources. Never leave small dogs or cats outside unsupervised and vaccinate your pets per your vet’s recommendation. Also, consider installing coyote proof fencing. If you come upon a coyote and it doesn’t immediately run away, chase, spray water and shout at it until it leaves. day tacked on to the end of February. This means that 2020 will not end on the same weekday it began. Now, why do we need an extra day every four years? It is to keep our calendar aligned with the astronomical seasons. One orbit of the earth around the sun takes 365.25 days. To keep us on track, we add it up and add an extra day every four years. If we didn't, the calendar would be off by 25 days after 100 years. February and March would feel more like spring in Minnesota. This extra day was initially introduced by Julius Caesar. A fun fact about February 29th is that, in the olden days, women could initiate dances or propose to men and not just the other way around. If a man turned down the proposal, he was expected to give the woman 12 pairs of gloves so she could cover up her ring-less hand for the following twelve months. Whatever you end up doing on February 29th, enjoy the bonus day!

ADOPT A BOXER RESCUE: SAVE TWO LIVES

LOVE

AFTER A LONG DAY AT WORK YOU WALK INTO THE HOUSE AND AN ENTHUSIASTIC, ENERGETIC BOXER RUNS UP TO YOU WITH A SMILE AND SHOWERS YOU WITH KISSES TO WELCOME YOU HOME. Minnesota Boxer Rescue and Rejection Collection Boxer Rescue share their insights into Boxer dogs and why adopting this breed is so rewarding. MINNESOTA BOXER RESCUE Minnesota Boxer Rescue is a non-profit 501(c)(3), foster-based dog rescue organization primarily serving Minnesota and surrounding areas. MNBR was started in June of 2006 and is operated by volunteers. “Rescue workers see the awful things, but we also get to see a dog flourish and thrive through the in-home foster and adoption process,” says Volunteer President, Janice Anderson. In addition to dedicated volunteers, Doctor Jim Nelson from Prairie Village Pet Hospital, provides a helping hand with medical procedures. “We remove lumps, repair knees, extract teeth...whatever it takes to get them healthy and find them a new home,” says Dr. Nelson. 14

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | February 2020

Dr. Nelson doesn’t just provide medical services, he also adopted a Boxer rescue. “She greets me enthusiastically, sneezing and wiggling her rear end every day. It makes my heart soar to see her dancing around my kitchen floor. I can’t believe I’m her sixth owner, but I do know I’m going to be her last,” says Dr. Nelson. Boxer dogs are smart, animated, playful, goofy dogs that love to jump and “box” with their paws. Their energetic personalities make them dedicated and loyal companions, explains Anderson. MNBR currently has nineteen boxers looking for their forever homes and approximately nineteen-hundred boxer dogs have been adopted since 2006. “I wanted a boxer because they have the biggest heart. I wanted a rescue because as much a s I could save her, she saved me,” comments adopter, Mary Murphy. If you, as Janice Anderson says, “Have a little wiggle room, adopt a Boxer Today!” Visit mnboxerrescue.rescuegroups.org or call 763-647-3037. REJECTION COLLECTION BOXER RESCUE Rejection Collection Boxer Rescue opened their doors in 2019. The rescue was founded by a group of Boxer lovers who saw a need for senior and special needs Boxer dogs. “We believe all dogs deserve loving, responsible and committed homes. These homes may be adoptive homes, foster homes, comfort care or hospice homes depending on the needs of the dog,” says President, Stacy Burton. Senior dogs are often the last to be looked at due to their shorter life span or costs involved in making sure they live out their best lives explains Burton. RCBR succeeds through volunteers and donations. While they don’t have a physical building, they do provide foster homes across the country for their rescue dogs. “We will educate the families about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a rescued dog into their home and lives,” explains Burton. Also, RCBR works with area shelters and organizations to develop a network of supporters and volunteers to create a better world for homeless pets. “By adopting a rescue dog, you might not be changing the world, but to that one dog, you are saving its life, actually you are saving two dogs by adopting...the dog you are bringing into your family and the space in the foster home to bring in another dog, says Burton. Currently RCBR has twenty dogs available for adoption and have successfully found forever homes for four boxers. “Rescues seem to know they were ‘saved’ and give love back ten-fold, says adopter Duraye Marshelle. To learn more about RCBR and their adoptive dogs visit rejectioncollectionboxerrescue.rescuegroups.org Looking for a lifelong buddy that will bring joy and unconditional love into your life? THE FIRST VALENTINE

VALENTINE’S DAY THROUGH HISTORY

WHETHER CELEBRATING LOVE OR FRIENDSHIP, EVERY FEBRUARY 14 BRINGS AN OUTPOURING OF EMOTION AS LOVED ONES AND FRIENDS CARRY OUT THE TIME-HONORED TRADITIONS OF VALENTINE’S DAY. Cards and gifts, typically flowers and candy, are exchanged and sweet promises and expressions of affection are made. Best of all, getting a Valentine isn’t dependent upon whether you have been naughty or nice. We know that much about Valentine’s Day, but there there’s quite a bit that we don’t know. We don’t know for sure how Valentine’s Day began. While the Day is celebrated in many other countries around the world as a celebration of love and friendship, it wasn’t always so. The oldest known written Valentine dates back to England, in 1415. However, there are other, older writings, that reference the custom. Stories about the origin of Valentines are plentiful. One version is that the holiday came from the annual Roman festival of Luperci, which culminated in single women putting their name in an urn, and single bachelors choosing a name and becoming paired for the year with a chosen woman. Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year (more cards are sent at Christmas). With men having some catching up to do, women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines. The answer to how Valentine’s Day started or exactly why it falls on February is unknown. Having an air of uncertainty over Valentine’s Day seems appropriate somehow as love is, itself, a mystery. Is there a friend you want to acknowledge? A spouse you want to remind how you feel? Maybe you have a special someone you want to “make yours”? There’s no better time for putting your feelings out into the open. THE ART OF LOVE 20

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | February 2020

FINDING ART IN EDEN PRAIRIE ARTICLE MIKE MOHN

ADMIT IT – YOU’VE CRIED DURING A MOVIE. This experience of feeling what someone else is feeling, even a fictional character, or to let our emotions show is the result of being able to connect with emotion. That’s the purpose of art, to create a form of communication that allows us to experience emotion. When we think of emotion, love is probably our first thought. Art creates a conduit to how we feel about love, using colors and shapes such as red hearts. Yet love can be shown beyond the traditional forms of expression – you might find that a gesture can inspire love. In 2008, the family of Roger Sampson donated a building that has become the Eden Prairie Art Center. This donation is the single largest gift ever made to the City of Eden Prairie. Roger used the building to create art. By donating it to Eden Prairie, his family hoped to create a space that could be used by others to create their own art. The Center offers open studio time where residents can visit the encouraging setting to draw, paint, sculpt – even to fuse glass. People of all ages are welcome and it’s common to see children’s birthday parties or group outings or groups of seniors exercising their creativity at the Center. PUBLIC ART IN EDEN PRAIRIE In 2019, three public art sculptures were placed in Eden Prairie thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The sculptures were part of the City’s plan for making public art part of Eden Prairie’s future. Using additional grants from the NEA, the City also transformed eight storage and utility boxes into permanent public art. Each design comes from a Minnesota artist chosen through an application process. Through the art program, the City can beautify functional items that might be considered an eyesore. Covering the boxes with weather-resistant material that serves as a canvas for artwork extends the life of the equipment and, more importantly, allows for the discovery of art in what many would consider unexpected places.

THE AR T OF LOVE (CONTINUED)

Eden Prairie included public art in its planning process because doing so meets several City Council goals, including Sense of Community, Preserved and Beautiful Environment and Innovative and Sustainable Practices, as well as the City’s comprehensive plan, Aspire Eden Prairie 2040. Public art is one of the elements identified in the Aspire plan’s vision for the future of Eden Prairie, with focus groups and workshops identifying desired locations for public art installations throughout the City. If the purpose of art is communicate emotion, then Eden Prairie is alive and well. By providing opportunities to view art, the City is creating opportunities to have a community that is more than just a place to sleep, work and shop. City leaders are planning on a future that has love, inspiration, and beauty as part of our everyday life. 22

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | February 2020

If you want to make your own art, to communicate the emotion that you feel in the hope of connecting with others, Eden Prairie has an Art Center right down the street. If you are more passive, sit back and enjoy the public art the City provides. Either way, it’s a beautiful world. The Eden Prairie Art Center is located at 7650 Equitable Drive, Eden Prairie. Please call for hours and information about available services.

TREND SE T TER (CONTINUED)

We also asked Tom about window covering and if drapes or blinds are the way to go. The answer is the inevitable, “It depends”. “Think of why you want to cover the window in the first place” says Tom, “Is it to prevent light, to reduce heat loss, for privacy or just to frame the window?” These questions all go into the decision. Generally, blinds are great for privacy, to keep light out and are more versatile. When it comes to blinds there are endless options to include opaque, black out, wood and plastic. There are even blinds that works off an app on your phone so you can shut your blinds from anywhere in the world. Curtains are a good choice as well. Similar to blinds, curtains some in many different styles, materials and sizes. If you need privacy, the thickness of your curtains is an important consideration. Thickness adds weight, which must be considered when choosing a curtain rod or treatment. In today’s market, a curtain rod or treatment can be as important as the curtain – make sure you talk to a professional for advice on what’s best for you. Tom offered some thoughts about trends for 2020. He said that there is no standout design style, but the popular colors for this year are combinations of blue/ green and green/blues. Mainstays are darker brown and dark blue herringbone, but nothing too bold. Make a statement with color, but don’t scream it. “Remember that the furniture should last for 20 – 30 years, so it should be comfortable”, offers Tom. “Most important of all, you should love your look! If you don’t, make some easy changes that will make you fall in love again”. Yetzer’s has been a mainstay in Waconia for 78 years. They offer design services, furniture and home decor and focus on quality, not price. “Everything in our showroom is customized. Custom does not mean expensive. If you can dream it, we can do it!” says Tom. “We are here to build relationships and help expose the customer to what they really want. There are so many styles on the market and we are here to educate the customer on what is available, so they have all the options they need to make a good decision”. Yetzer’s is located at 33 W 1st Street in Waconia, MN 55387 and can be reached at phone (952) 232- 0976.

C O N V E R S AT I O N S TA R T E R S Home dĂŠcor that doubles as conversation starters are always great. These adorable bulldogs not only hold books in place, they add a sense of whimsy to your room. Pick pieces that make you smile when you see them and that add enjoyment every day.

FOCAL POINTS Large geometrical pieces draw the eye and creates a focal point in any room. These pieces can be placed on the coffee table, side table or in a bookshelf. Allow room around the pieces so they can stand out. One or two are enough for most rooms to avoid a cluttered look.

P O P O F C O LO R Consider adding a blanket in a new color to your couch or chair. It will add a pop of color and also be there when you need to warm up. Choose from red, green, grey and blue as these are great colors that typically work with most homes. Blankets and throws are relatively inexpensive and can be changed frequently.

LIGHT FIXTURES Fixtures is a great way to showcase your personality. Keep in mind that fixtures will add to the overall feel of the room, so think about what the light should do. Is it to add ambiance, to highlight or to illuminate? Once you have decided the purpose, you can choose a fixture that fits your design style.

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.
