Does your company offer third-party software to your clients? Nebula HQ might be just what you need to cultivate your brand experience, cofounders Bryan Hunter and Paul Schwab say. Bryan founded his payroll firm, 937 Payroll, a little over two years ago. He offers third-party accounting, HR and time tracking software. But even though all of that software is white labeled as a 937 Payroll offering, a client who uses all of those services has to log in to three different sites. “It was a creating a disjointed client experience,” he recalled. As it turns out, Bryan’s son & Paul’s daughter go to pre-school together, so on a field trip to the zoo, Bryan found himself making small talk with his soon-to-be technical partner. Bryan and Paul are looking for beta users to test the Nebula HQ platform. Reach Bryan at bhunter@937payroll.com. DaytonTechGuide.com.

ARTIST’S PALETTE

AT THE “ART” OF THE MATTER MEET THE FOUR OHIO WOMEN ARTISTS WHO ARE SHOWING AT THE CONTEMPORARY DAYTON, LOCATED AT 118 NORTH JEFFERSON ST, 45402

“MY INTEREST AS AN ARTIST IS VERY MUCH ABOUT ECOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY.”

ALISON JARDINE ART FOUND ITS WAY BACK TO ALISON JARDINE DESPITE THE PRACTICAL PULL OF SOCIETY. As the daughter of a painter and sister of an art student, as a young adult she’d dabbled in art school herself but had found art-related jobs weren’t as plentiful by the time it was her turn. She opted to go the straight-andnarrow working for 10 years in her native Great Britain in the high-tech industry for Amazon since its startup. However, upon moving to the United States 15 years ago, she was unable to get a work visa; so, she secured her stay by attending the University of North Texas in Dallas and eventually earning a Master of Fine Arts which led the University of Cincinnati, where she now teaches. “It’s like mycelium—the roots of a mushroom—the artist community,” she lovingly joked. Her mushroom reference isn’t out of nowhere. “My interest as an artist is very much about ecology and sustainability,” she said. The inspiration for her pieces in the “With Devotion” show at The Contemporary Dayton (The Co) was borne out of her experiences as a hiker. “I began hiking as a way to understand where I’m living,” she said. On her hikes, she would often see stray trash, which inspired her to take tree trunks and soil from Cincinnati, where she now resides, and create sculptures of cast concrete mixed with disposable packaging on top of the trunks. “Basically everything we buy comes in packaging that we’re supposed to throw away, but it just sits somewhere, like in the ocean. I started looking at these things and finding their interiors really interesting; so, I pulled the packaging into the concrete, and I’m left with extremely strange, interesting shapes that stack on top of each other.” ARTICLE LESLIE HECK

JENNIFFER OMAITZ

Thanks to her high school French class, Jenniffer Omaitz found her calling as an artist at the age of 15. Her mother had always fostered creativity in her, but the synergy of her family encouraging her to take the French class’ trip to Paris and completing her first high school art classes opened her up to a new world. “There’s something about going to a different place and being so shrouded by the history, and you realize for the first time, ‘I want to continue this; so, if being an artist or being in art classes is what got me here, then I want to keep doing that.’” She went on to study painting at both the Cleveland Institute of Art and in the Master of Fine Arts program at Kent State University and begin a career as an abstract artist. The pieces Omaitz is showing at The Co's “With Devotion” exhibition are made using acrylic with her own medium, such as gouache, mixed in for a more natural quality, and range from 12”x12” to 44”x48”. The work is very gestural, very designed, she said. It references architecture, different parts of 20th century graphic design. Some pieces reference medieval manuscripts. One piece, in particular, called Missing Marginalia, intentionally has some of the same colors you might see from a Renaissance or pre-Renaissance manuscript. “It’s about painting: this process and activity that is making something of a mental landscape in a way. It’s exposing the process of putting paint on a surface, but that surface, of course, is the document of a moment in time—something that is ephemeral; so, it can be poetic, structural, lyrical.”

WHEN PASSIONS GET TAPPED HOW WARPED WING BREWERS FELL IN LOVE WITH THEIR CRAFT

FOR SURE, JOHN HAGGERTY WAS GOING TO BE AN ARCHITECT. After graduating from Miami University in 1991 with his degree in Architecture, he was about to embark on his dream career. Or was he? Things first got a bit off track when in a moment of “what’s next.” A professor suggested Seattle. “I think you’d like Seattle,” the prof encouraged. Haggerty, a home beer brewer at the time, landed a job at Seattle’s Big Time Brewery & Alehouse. And the rest, as the cliché goes, and just like Orville and Wilbur Wright, is Dayton history. Honing his craft, Haggerty did stints at breweries in Wisconsin and Minnesota, among others. Eventually, he desired to move from “pub brewer to production brewer.” Flash forward to 2014, when together with Joe Waizman, Mike Stover, and Nick Bowman, the Warped Wing Brewing Company was founded. With a nod to Dayton history, the name of the company is inspired by the Wright Brother’s patented invention of “wing warping,” a clever wing mechanism based on bird dynamics designed to keep the plane stabilized. The crew at Warped Wing come from varied, and even surprising backgrounds, like Fred Pallant, a structural engineer, and Doug Camfield, an Independent Contractor with NASA, to name a few. The common thread: brewing great beer. “The process itself is what’s exciting for us,” Camfield says. “It’s always a learning process.” 18

Warped Wing stokes its warm and friendly ambience by encouraging employees to bring their families into the taproom and interact with the customers. “I want them to bring their mom and dad in here,” Haggerty says of the crew. “I want them to be proud of where they work.” These days, Warped Wing has evolved to two owners: Haggerty and Bowman. And as far as the craft beer craze, CONTINUED >

Haggerty foresees no end in sight. This is true especially for the small upstart breweries and restaurants that brew their own beer. For their part, this upcoming June, the company will open the Warped Wing Brewing Company Barrel Room & Smokery at Wright Station in Springboro. The 20,000-squarefoot distribution center will include a taproom, eatery, outdoor biergarten, a 400-barrel aging space, a “test-pilot” brewery, as well as canning and packaging facilities. Meanwhile, Haggerty occasionally takes time from his busy schedule to give talks at schools encouraging students to discover a career path centered around what they love. Then, once you’ve found what you want, no matter where you start on the ladder, take responsibility and strive to constantly add new skills to your repertoire. Eventually, the money will come. “At the end of the day you don’t go to work for the money,” Haggerty says. “So, like what you do.”

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

perfect pan-seared sea scallops I n g r e d i e n ts + 1 1/2 pounds sea scallops + 3 tablespoons butter + 1 tablespoon olive oil + Salt and freshly ground pepper + 1 tablespoon minced garlic + Juice of 1 lemon + 1/2 cup dry white wine or water + 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped

Method 01 Cut 2 tablespoons of butter into peasized pieces onto a small plate and place it in the freezer. 02 Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat for 3 or 4 minutes. Add one tablespoon of butter and olive oil and wait for butter to melt. 03 Pat scallops dry, add to pan and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook, turning once, until well browned on both sides but not quite cooked through. 04 Transfer scallops to a plate and remove brown bits from skillet with spatula. 05 Stir in garlic, lemon juice, and wine into same skillet. Lower heat and cook until liquid thickens, then whisk in the chilled butter from the freezer, one bit at a time, to make a creamy sauce. 06 Return scallops to skillet and add chives. Adjust heat so sauce bubbles gently then toss. 07 Transfer the scallops to a platter and spoon the sauce all over. 08 Serve over roasted Brussels sprouts or asparagus. CONTINUED >
