RENOVATE & REFINE

Master Suite Masterpiece GET INSPIRATION FROM THIS MAGICAL MASTER SUITE RENOVATION BY LAUREN LEVANT INTERIOR

ARTICLE MATTHEW HACKE PHOTOGRAPHY DAVE BRYCE PHOTOGRAPHY

24

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | December 2019

LAUREN LEVANT AND HER TEAM AT LAUREN LEVANT INTERIOR ARE ALWAYS LOOKING TO SURPRISE CLIENTS WITH HOW MUCH CAN BE DONE TO A SPACE NO MATTER THE SIZE OR LAYOUT. “Clients come to us because they’re looking to change a certain space in their home, and they often don’t know what’s possible,” Lauren says. “Our job is to try to surprise them with how much is possible, especially in spaces where you don’t have endless square footage and you’re dealing with older architecture.” One of Lauren’s most recent projects, shown here, combined both factors. “This project was a smaller master suite renovation in an older home in Sewickley. The client was looking for better closet storage, a more luxurious bathroom with spa-like features, and an updated and relaxing bedroom.” When Lauren first visited the space, she knew she had her work cut out for her. “When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was the fireplace in the center of the bedroom that could not be moved, as well as closet space that was cramped and poorly laid out,” she says. “Therefore, I proposed that instead of having a closed-off walk-in closet, we rip out the walls to make a more circular flow throughout the space.” By adding this circulation and openness to the suite, it also allowed for more natural light to come in, making it brighter and feel more spacious. “The light from the bathroom actually streams straight into the dressing room, which otherwise would not have had any natural light,” Lauren says.

“IN THE SPACE, THERE ARE MANY TEXTURE COMPONENTS, SUCH AS WHITE FUR AND CRYSTAL. SO COLOR-WISE, WE PLAYED WITH WINTER WHITES, CREAMS AND PALE GRAY SHADES TO COMPLEMENT THESE TEXTURES.”

The color palette Lauren used in the space was inspired by the clients' love of texture, as well as classic and clean details. “In the space, there are many texture components, such as white fur and crystal,” Lauren says. “So color-wise, we played with winter whites, creams and pale gray shades to complement these textures.” Other textural details Lauren and her team incorporated into the suite and built upon included the tile flooring in the bathroom and glass doorknob fixtures that the clients’ had picked out during a previous bedroom update. “The doorknob is a glass piece that celebrates the materiality of the space and light bouncing around,” CONTINUED >

RENOVATE & REFINE

(CON TI N U ED)

says Lauren. “I loved them so much when I saw them at my first visit that they helped inform the color and aesthetic of the new bedroom, bathroom and dressing room,” she continues. “We also used hexagon tile that has almost a tapestry pattern throughout the bathroom and the shower area because it looks more like a textile texture as opposed to a tile texture.” The stunning dressing room and closet space was made to feel as spacious and calming as possible. “I’ve found that closets and dressing rooms are one of the fastest-growing areas of interest in interior design, and the reason is that it calms anxiety when you know that everything is in its place and where to find it,” Lauren says. “As you can see, the client has a huge shoe collection, so one side of the dressing room is pretty much dedicated to her collection of high heels. This is a lot of fun visually, but it’s also very functional because if those shoes were all in bins, hidden or in a jumble, you forget what you have and you just don’t use them.” Another personal feature Lauren incorporated into the space was the client’s love of coffee. 26

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | December 2019

“When I heard of the client’s love of coffee, I introduced them to a Miele built-in coffee machine. This built-in, directly plumbed coffee maker grinds its own beans and makes lattes, macchiatos, espressos, you name it!” Lauren says. “It’s essentially a Starbucks in the bathroom.” Plus, when the client is finished drinking their morning brew, they can put their cups right into the dishwasher installed right underneath the coffee machine. Ultimately, what makes projects like these so special for Lauren and her team is the fact that the client is truly putting themselves first. “I know a lot of people who work so hard and are always running around struggling to find time to prioritize their own sanity,” Lauren says. “So, I find that when people renovate their master suites, they are finally putting energy back into themselves and prioritizing their

LOCALLY OWNED ISLE OF YOU HAIR COLOR STUDIO HAS CREATING AND CORRECTING HAIR COLOR TREATMENTS DOWN TO A SCIENCE

CHEMISTRY IN THE COLOR FOR MORE THAN 38 YEARS, SHARI GELDRICH HAS BEEN SPECIALIZING IN HAIR COLOR TREATMENTS BOTH IN CORPORATE AND SALON SETTINGS. “I started in my career as a corporate trainer and a national level education manager for a couple of different companies specializing in hair color treatment,” Shari says. “I’ve always enjoyed the chemistry and science that goes into the process, so I've loved teaching it for many years.” Missing working in a salon environment and utilizing the skills she taught, in 2011, Shari firmly planted her roots in upper Lawrenceville and opened Isle of You Hair Color Studio. Like the play-on-words the salon takes its name from, Shari and her husband, Josh, who works on the marketing and business side of the salon, truly love what they do, and it shows in their work and the clientele they have amassed locally and nationally. “We were fortunate enough to acquire a great reputation for advanced hair color work early on because of Shari’s specialty in color correction that other salons wouldn’t touch,” Josh says. Because of Shari’s advanced technical background in color treatment, people have come from all over to seek help for severe hair damage. “Those are the types of things we get a lot of calls

WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.

PHOTOGRAPHY NICKI SEBASTIAN FOR JENNI KAYNE

30

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | December 2019

KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring. CONTINUED >

TWEEDIA LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slippershaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait— in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.

RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

32

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | December 2019

NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.

This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
