I am going to try to push for more balance in the new year. Yes, I’ll add crunches and yoga. But, I won’t cut my consumption of buttery croissants from Evergreen Butcher + Bakery in my neighborhood. I want to increase the time I spend on community-building projects at my church, but I won’t give up evenings watching The Crown with my husband, parked on the sofa for hours. Last month, our publisher Jim Newman and his wife Darce joined my family and

NANCY KNOWS BUCKHEAD Nancy Tardo is an expert at continually raising the bar on customer service. She is, after all, the bar manager at Johnny’s Hideaway, the iconic Buckhead nightclub that recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Tardo has worked there for more than half of those years. As the bar manager, Tardo is not only responsible for hiring, managing and scheduling bar and wait staff, she’s also responsible for weekly reservations and party booking. She credits much of her success to embracing the lofty customer service standards she learned from general manager turned owner Chris D’Auria. Tardo, who planned to become a psychologist, had no idea the hospitality industry would alter her career path. “I started waiting tables at Hooters as a senior in high school with my fellow senior cheerleaders,” she says. “It was the easiest interview ever since they only asked two questions. ‘Can you hula hoop’ and ‘Do your parents know you’re applying?’” The rest, as they say, is history."

SINCE 1979, THE CHARITY HAS SERVED MORE THAN 50,000 FAMILIES SEEKING MEDICAL CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN IN ATLANTA. In celebration, Gov. Brian Kemp proclaimed March 11, 2019, as Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities Day in Georgia. Atlanta’s first Ronald McDonald House on Houston Mill Road, the fourth Ronald McDonald House in the world, opened on March 11, 1979. It was built to provide a haven for families who must travel far from home for their child’s specialized medical care. In 2008, it was replaced with a $15.7 million LEEDcertified 50-bedroom facility on Gatewood Road, featuring a transplant wing to serve children who have received heart, liver, kidney and bone marrow transplants.
