Home for the Holidays GIVE YOUR SPACE THAT SPECIAL SPARKLE ARTICLE EMILY LIEBERT

12

Greenwich Lifestyle | December 2019

‘TIS THE SEASON TO GATHER WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY—FROM TREE LIGHTINGS TO CHANUKAH PARTIES, TO GOOD OLD-FASHIONED FESTIVITIES—AND WE ALL WANT OUR HOMES TO REFLECT THE MAGNIFICENCE OF THIS SPECIAL TIME OF YEAR. That’s where Ryan Smith, owner of Greenwich-based Ryan Thomas Smith Interior Design, comes in. His enthusiasm for creating beautiful environments for his clients, coupled with his passion for the holidays, is exactly why we asked him to share his best tips and suggestions for sprucing up our spaces. THE HOLIDAYS ARE A TIME FOR HOSTING. WHAT ARE SOME SPECIAL TOUCHES THAT CAN LIVEN UP A TABLE? I tend to like things clean and simple, especially on a table. Nothing is more annoying than trying to hold a conversation over a massive centerpiece. I recommend keeping the linens and place settings neutral, with just a touch of sparkle. Silvers, golds and whites are always smart choices. Then get a beaded table runner and line it with five-seven bowl vases packed with low-cut roses and sprinkle some tea lights all around them. This will add a little color and romance without being obtrusive.

“FRESH GREENERY WRAPPED IN LIGHTS IS EYE-CATCHING, AS ARE WHITE AND SILVER WINTER DECORATIONS.”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO DRESS A CHRISTMAS TREE? This has been a longstanding dilemma for my family. Unfortunately, about 10 years ago when our daughter arrived, I lost for good. I always preferred a “perfectly” decorated tree with matching bulbs, ribbons, beads and, of course, white lights. As family décor became more important, I realized that the most important thing is a ton of lights. Not only that, but I had to break my white lights-only rule by stringing multi-colored lights a layer deep in the branches and then adding a heavier layer of white bulbs on the outer branches. Everyone was happy with the subtlety of the color shining through and the tree twinkled beautifully.

THERE ARE SO MANY HOME CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS AVAILABLE. WHAT ARE SOME DESIGN IDEAS IF YOU’RE NOT RELIGIOUS OR IF YOU’RE CELEBRATING CHANUKAH, FOR EXAMPLE? Although Christmas décor has become more and more secular, seasonal items are always a great option. Fresh greenery wrapped in lights is eye-catching, as are white and silver winter decorations. Most recently, my wife and I found place settings with a simple silver branch and a cardinal sitting on it. If it’s Chanukah you celebrate, a largescale menorah in a bay window or on a console atop piles of lit greenery with photos of family in classic silver frames is a spectacular way to stay true to your meaning of the season. WHEN SHOULD HOLIDAY ADORNMENTS GO ON DISPLAY? WHEN IS IT TIME TO TAKE THEM DOWN? I’d like to say, “Do what feels right to you;” however, I’m pretty absolute on this. Decorate the day after Thanksgiving and disassemble on New Year’s Day. That’s the rule! 14

ASIDE FROM THE TYPICAL RED, GREEN AND BLUE, ARE THERE OTHER COLOR SCHEMES THAT ARE EQUALLY FESTIVE THIS TIME OF YEAR? I’ve never been a huge fan of the traditional red and green or blue and white. As I do with my interior design, I prefer to keep my holiday décor congruent with the colors already in the home. Our living room is gray with some goldenrod and dark teal accents, so I did my tree in the same hues— not a red or green bulb in sight! I recommend tight

Greenwich Lifestyle | December 2019

PEHT

STANDS FOR PARTNERSHIP TO END HUMAN TRAFFICKING, AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE WORKING TO DO. Human trafficking is the second-largest and fastestgrowing illegal business in the world, and PEHT’s goal is to change that. Step one of their plan is to educate the community. The organization has hosted and co-sponsored events throughout the year dedicated to shining light on human trafficking and bringing together stakeholders to raise awareness about the crime. PEHT has also partnered with other organizations that engage in advocacy to fight human trafficking through legislative efforts. Step two is a recovery program. PEHT has been working hard on the launch of an allencompassing, two-year recover program that will provide housing, food, medical, dental and vision services, mental health therapy, addiction services, education, and job training. So where do pets come in? Their pet product line was inspired by the unconditional love pets give, the type of love that victims of human trafficking need and deserve. And 100% of the proceeds from the products go to the survivors of human trafficking who help make all the products. Economic empowerment is critical for a survivor’s recovery to be sustainable. PEHT’s pet product retail company initiative, “Love your pet—change the world,” manufactures and sells products hand-crafted by trafficking survivors and by women whose economic vulnerability makes them potential targets of international traffickers. Based on the highly successful program of their sister organization, Thistle Farms, in Nashville, Tennessee, residents and graduates of PEHT’s restoration program will be given vocational opportunities within this enterprise along with other jobs within the pet industry, one of the fastest-growing business sectors in the United States.

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY HOW TO NAVIGATE THE PITFALLS OF THE HOLIDAY BINGE

ARTICLE EMILY LIEBERT IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR. Parties are in full swing. Cozy sweaters are fair game. And the temptation to indulge is everywhere—from prime rib and potatoes to eggnog and sweet treats. That’s why we called on Heather Bauer. Not only is she a nationally recognized nutrition expert, bestselling author and entrepreneur, but she’s also a registered dietitian who’s helped thousands of people reach their weight loss goals. Most recently, it’s been through her clean eating program, The Food Fix. Here, Heather offers her best suggestions for making the right choices during the holiday season.

24

Greenwich Lifestyle | December 2019

NAVIGATING AN AT-HOME HOLIDAY FEAST CAN BE CHALLENGING. WHICH DISHES ARE THE HEALTHIEST? A huge part of being successful during the holiday season is paying attention to your level of activity and what you’re eating when you’re not celebrating (parties are typically only two-four hours of your day). Make sure you exercise daily and drink sixeight cups of water by 3 p.m. to help offset the extra sodium you’ll be consuming. And always save your carbohydrate for whatever event you’re attending. As far as what to do once you’re at the party, remember to be strategic. Wait at least 45 minutes before you go for your first bite of food. The longer you wait to “break your seal,” the more success you’ll have. When building your plate, try to make it 75% veggies and 25% protein. Skip the potatoes, rice and pasta, because if you want to indulge in a cocktail or two, that will be your carb for the evening. Dishes to look for are

roast beef, baked ham or brisket?

string beans, sautéed spinach, roasted tur-

leftovers home with your guests, or keep cute

key, baked salmon and shrimp cocktail. If you’re the host, send any not-so-healthy to-go containers as a gift for your neighbors.

WHICH DISHES ARE BEST TO AVOID? Avoid anything “pop-able, pick-able, dip-able or nonstop-able.” This means nuts, cheese plate, spinach and artichoke dip, and even crudité, because once you start picking, it’s hard to curtail. Stick to the “four napkin rule”—fill up three-four napkins worth of appetizers throughout the party and then stop. If it’s a full dinner, it’s best to use only one plate and make that your meal. Other traditional holiday foods to avoid include Swedish meatballs (typically made with bread, butter and heavy cream—they can be up to 400 calories for one meatball), eggnog (1 cup is 350 calories!), prime rib (fattiest part of the cow), pecan pie, fruit cake and candied yams to name a few. Also, watch out for seasonal drinks like Starbucks’ peppermint mocha (a grande has 540 calories and 76 grams of sugar). The truth is, it’s okay to enjoy a cookie or two without guilt or share Christmas morning pancakes with the family—whatever you feel is worth it. Just eat mindfully and with gratitude and move on. EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY

(CON TI N U ED)

WHAT ABOUT WHEN YOU’RE DINING OUT FOR A HOLIDAY MEAL? When you are dining out for a holiday meal, always check in advance to see if there’s a menu available online so you can make a few healthy selections before you get to the restaurant. Fish (that’s not fried), roasted chicken and green vegetables are usually reliable, as long as you skip the heavy sauce. We tend to eat better when we feel good about ourselves, so getting a blowout, wearing something special (even a little more fitted—nothing like that for motivation) can help.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE MERRY, WHICH OFTEN MEANS DRINKING MORE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. WHAT ARE YOUR BEST TIPS FOR NAVIGATING LIQUOR CONSUMPTION? First and foremost, avoid sugary cocktails (like that punch that goes down like water). It’s also important to pick a drink you like but don’t love. For example, if you love wine and drink it quickly, it may be smarter to order something you don’t care for as much like vodka/soda/fresh squeezed lime. The key is to pick something you’ll only want to sip. And, before you have your second drink, try to have a glass of water. This will keep you hydrated and help with a potential hangover the next day.

wine, vodka or eggnog? Wine or vodka, depending on which you like less and which you’ll drink the slowest. While wine can be heart healthy, it’s easy to lose track of how much you’re drinking when your glass is constantly being re-filled.

string beans, brussel sprouts or creamed corn? String beans and Brussel sprouts are both excellent options. 26

It was then that the idea for The Food Fix started percolating and, ultimately, growing into the amazing program it is today. It’s also a great option for those who love working in a group environment (FoodFix.Me). WINTER \IN BLOOM BRIGHTEN UP YOUR AESTHETIC THIS SEASON WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT FROM KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO.

PHOTOGRAPHY NICKI SEBASTIAN FOR JENNI KAYNE

28

Greenwich Lifestyle | December 2019

KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring. CONTINUED >

TWEEDIA LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slippershaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait— in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.

RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

30

Greenwich Lifestyle | December 2019

NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.

This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
