ARE YOU HUNGRY, POTOMAC? We’re sure you will be when you read—or should we say devour—this issue, the most drool-worthy one of the year: the Foodie issue! We spent the last few months scouring the streets in search of the most delicious bites the Potomac area has to offer, and we found more than enough material and food-for-cause events to fill the pages. Narrowing down all the sensational local flavors and new dietary cuisines in town was no easy task, but we are confident this issue is an accurate representation of our emerging reputation as a true dining destination. While we don’t like to play favorites, the Foodie issue is near and dear to our hearts. After all, food is not only nourishing (and delicious) but it also brings people together in many ways—whether it’s a special anniversary dinner, a much-needed lunch break with coworkers, a friend’s birthday party or even a casual weeknight meal with family or an inspiring fundraiser to help others. Food is often considered one of life’s great pleasures. Dig in, Potomac!

POTOMAC IS AN EVENT THAT PROMISES FULL STOMACHS AND HEARTS AS THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISER FOR ADOPTIONS TOGETHER, A LOCAL NONPROFIT THAT SPECIALIZES IN FORGING FAMILIES OF ALL KINDS. Each year, the community gathers to celebrate the idea that “family is everything,” according to Founder and Executive Director Janice Goldwater. “It’s because somebody loved us that we were able to get up this morning and step into the world.” Neighbors gathered on Sept. 21 to sample local fare in support of the organization’s work and witness firsthand how they’re making

a difference. Among this year’s honorees were Brian and Kate Detwiler, who adopted their now 3-year-old son through Adoptions Together. “Nolan was born with his intestines on the outside; he almost died,” Janice says. “The hospital called and said they didn’t know if he’d make it, but could we find him a family? And because we welcome every child who needs us, we said, ‘absolutely.’” The Detwilers learned about Nolan just six months after entering Adoptions

Together’s waiting parent pool. “We could have opted to wait for a healthier child, but what would that mean for Nolan?” Kate says. “There was a child in front of us in need of a home and parents. And wasn’t being a parent all we were asking to be? In the end, we are so glad we took that leap. Nolan still receives nearly 100% of his nutrients through a central line to his heart and a gastrostomy tube to his stomach, but he is an extremely bright, sociable and thriving 3-year-old. We can’t imagine our family any other way.” Stories like the Detwilers’ are exactly what Adoptions Together hoped to help create when it opened its doors to the community in 1990. Janice sought to close a gap that she’d witnessed in her years of adoption work: Most local agencies weren’t truly inclusive. “There were some real barriers for prospective single parents, same-sex par-

ents, parents of different religious groups, mixed-race parents,” she says. “Moms would come to us after having delivered a child that was positive for HIV or had cocaine in their system and their agencies would have literally left them at the hospital saying, ‘Sorry, we can’t help you.’ Adoptions Together stepped into that spot of welcoming everybody.”
Hal Segall and Lauren Gross
After infant adoption, Adoptions Together moved into international adoptions, then children in state foster care. (Right now, there are 110,000 kids across the U.S. in foster care right now waiting to be adopted.) The organization also strives to serve as a holistic support system, focusing on education and counseling. “Having what we call adoption-competent services is really important,” Janice says. “Services by professionals who understand the unique core issues that our children and families face—the grief and loss that the children face, identity issues for kids who don’t look like their parents, those not raised in the family they were born into.” Janice even adopted one of her own children, an experience that reaffirmed her dedication to her life’s work.

“When I see my own child—how hurt she was early in life, how resilient and dynamic she’s become, what a force of life she is—I’m so thankful. ARTICLE DANIELLE S. TEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY JACK HARTZMAN

Potomac Lifestyle | October 2019
Six years ago,
THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES AND ADOPTION CENTER OPENED ITS DOORS TO LOCAL PET LOVERS. A multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art facility 20 years in the making, MCASAC has become the largest open-admission animal shelter in the county, operated by the animal services division of the police department. Those who step inside hoping to bring home a new best friend and family member will see 50,000 square feet of space dedicated to helping up to 6,000 animals each year. More than 80 adoptable dogs can be housed at one time, along with upwards of 150 cats, with room leftover for small mammals, birds, reptiles and more. What MCASAC visitors don’t see, however, is the group of people who worked vigorously to open those doors in the first place, and it’s their commitment to helping animals that keeps the place running behind the scenes. Montgomery County Partners for Animal WellBeing is the fundraising nonprofit organization that incorporated in 2010 with the sole mission of creating a safe place for animals. “We really fought for it,” says Allan Cohen, one of the founding board members. “The problem is, even though we’re in their county, folks don’t realize we’re here. “Most people look for something with the name ‘Humane Society’ on it, but MCPAW is not a humane society, because unlike humane societies, we don’t own and operate the shelter. It’s done by the county,” explains Donald Hoffman, another MCPAW board member. “That’s why it’s called Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being. We’re out there facilitating fundraising activities to enable the shelter to be more successful in taking care of animals and ensuring they have a good place to live until they find a home.” MCPAW’s slogan reads, “Helping pets feel at home ... until they find yours.” MCPAW strives to provide hope for abused, abandoned and lost pets in Montgomery County. “We hope many people will see the need to come over and ask about adopting these wonderful animals that need so much love and compassion and are willing to give so much love and compassion back,” Donald says. The organization’s biggest roadblock is visibility, but one goal is to increase community presence for the MCPAW third annual party officially named Animal House! It’s not quite a toga party, but the event, held at the Potomac Bolger Center on Oct. 5 from 6–10 p.m., does invite guests to dress for a 1960s frat party, and the organizers promise to keep everyone on their feet dancing. Of course, each member of MCPAW has their own special reason for getting involved. “Most of us have our own love and passion for animals,” Donald says. “I’m personally involved because I have four rescue pit bulls that I love dearly like my own children. And I see that there’s breed discrimination, but all dogs, all cats, all animals deserve an even break. They all deserve the opportunity to be treated with what we would consider dignity and respect. When we say we’re for animals, we really mean for all animals.” The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center is at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. ING: SEEING A MOVIE AT THIS LUXURY THEATER MAY RUIN NOT ONE BUT TWO OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS BECAUSE YOU MAY NEVER BE HAPPY DOING THEM ANYWHERE ELSE. They said they had a simple goal of combining the two most common forms of entertainment: going to the movies and dining out. But don’t let that fool you. In truth, their diabolical plan ensures that seeing a movie or dining out anywhere else will forever seem inferior. These people have thought of everything.

The gorgeous lobby resembles a five-star hotel. Prior to the guests’ arrival, the crew has carefully placed a monogrammed blanket and pillow on each theater seat. The comfy recliners feature push-button maneuvering. Each seat also has its own swivel table and, on each table, there is an elegant leather-bound menu and a cloth napkin. Silverware is missing, but it is no mistake. The theater’s signature Dine in the Dark menu is expressly designed to be easy to eat at your seat while watching a movie, without the need for cutlery. Their goal is to deliver chefdriven quality dishes and handcrafted cocktails directly to movie seats. In addition to gourmet comfort foods, they offer gluten-free, low carb, low sugar, keto-friendly selections. IPIC’s robust menu is in response to consumer preferences and is also ahead of the curve. The company wants guests to enjoy all the creature comforts of their home and lifestyle, including healthy eating habits. IPIC’s new “Guiltless Pleasures” section of their Dine in the Dark in-theater menu is geared to accomplish this. They describe these new menu items as health-minded and with nutritional content. The Guiltless Pleasures menu items include a variety of cocktails, appetizers, entrees and desserts so guests can get, as they say, “thinner and a movie.”

VISITORS TO A CBD WELLNESS STORE MIGHT FEEL AS THOUGH THEY’VE ENTERED A WAITING AREA FOR A STYLISH SPA INSTEAD OF A RETAIL SHOP. There are no floor-to-ceiling shelves bulging with products. There are no carts or shopping baskets and no clearance racks with ads screaming for attention. Instead, tasteful, soothing decor and an open floorplan greet customers who immediately feel at ease in what they might have expected to be a more overwhelming encounter. “I don’t want my employees sounding like salespeople,” says founder Anthony Tran. “They are there to educate.” It’s one thing that makes CBD Wellness different than typical retail stores and even different from most others selling products, as Anthony does, that are derived from marijuana, or cannabis. Products at CBD Wellness include sublingual oils (for placing a drop under your tongue), topicals like lotions and salves, edibles including gummies, vaping cartridges, coffee and tea, products for the bath and even some for pets. According to the well-researched CBD Wellness website, CBD and THC are among the compounds, known as cannabinoids, in the cannabis plant. THC, the most active ingredient in marijuana, creates a mind-altering "high" when a person smokes it or uses it in cooking. CBD is not psychoactive and does not change a person's state of mind when they use it. However, CBD does appear to produce significant changes in the body, and some research suggests that it has medical benefits. All products sold by CBD Wellness contain less than 0.3% THC and are legal in all 50 states. Anthony explains that, although the products do not require a prescription, customers should consult with a doctor before using CBD or other dietary supplements. Anthony’s exploration of CBD all started with his left knee. “I was in Vegas, and I went into a CDB store,” he says. He was seeking relief from a painful left knee that has no cartilage. “They didn’t really explain anything,” he says. “I told the salesgirl why I was interested in the product, and she just said, ‘Here, take this.’ She didn’t explain anything. There was no math. There was no [explanation about] how to progress a dose. I thought it was a scam. I felt nothing.” With managerial experience in the health and fitness and manufacturing fields, Anthony’s curious nature led him to dig deeper into the science of using CBD as a pain killer and of finding each person’s optimal dose. “I started taking a lot more than [the salesgirl] told me, and I felt relief,” he says. Anthony opened his own store so people interested in CBD would not have the negative experience he first had. “I wanted to share it with the world, the education part,” he says. Anthony now has six stores, including five in the DMV and one in Georgia. At each, employees offer plenty of free advice, answers and explanations in a no-pressure environment. Anthony carries several brands, including his own proprietary brand, VC Naturalz, which is manufactured in Virginia. THREE OF THE MANY WAYS TO USE CBD PRODUCTS: + VC Naturalz Drop It On Full-Spectrum CBD Oil – Distilled several times to achieve a clean taste, this refined product has a well-balanced profile. + VC Naturalz Full-Spectrum Pain Salve – Formulated for pain and inflammation in joints and muscles, this topical product is also effective for bug bites, sunburn and more + VC Naturalz Chew On It Gummy Squares – Considered a gourmet gummy, customers love this product’s unusual taste and texture and its healing, calming and restorative properties.
WITH MANAGERIAL EXPERIENCE IN THE HEALTH AND FITNESS AND MANUFACTURING FIELDS, ANTHONY’S CURIOUS NATURE LED HIM TO DIG DEEPER INTO THE SCIENCE OF USING CBD AS A PAIN KILLER AND OF FINDING EACH PERSON’S OPTIMAL DOSE. October 2019 | Potomac Lifestyle

SIGNATURE CATERERS MAKES EVERY EVENT A CELEBRATION WITH IMPECCABLE STYLE, FABULOUS FOOD

FROM THE
WILLARD HOTEL TO NATIONALS PARK, SIGNATURE CATERERS CREATES MEMORABLE EVENTS. They have literally cobbled together makeshift kitchens among trees and moss, as well as at farms, in backyards, on rooftops and pretty much anywhere someone is having a party. Established in 2000, the company prides itself on operating like clockwork.
“To us, each event is like a Hollywood production,” says Justin Dekelbaum, director of catering for the company. “Your experience is storybook perfect, while we make magic behind the scenes.” Customer testimonials seem to bear this out. Some excerpts: “We were blown away.” “Amazing.” “We had the best possible experience.” “Well beyond our expectations.” “Truly phenomenal.” The company, which is strictly kosher, is known for its attention to detail and frequent and effective communication with clients. “We are service-driven. We are not just caterers. We take the role of almost an event planner at certain events. All the food is custom-made for your menu,” Justin says. Signature Caterers’ parent company, the Shalom Group, also includes Shalom Kosher, a Silver Spring supermarket; and Max’s Kosher Café and Marketplace in Wheaton. Signature Caterers recently relocated into a brand-new state-of-the-art 15,000-squarefoot facility in Rockville.
FALL JEWISH HOLIDAYS
Although Signature Caterers does not have its own event space, Justin says, “We are looking to possibly do some kosher cooking classes here [at the new Rockville facility]. No one else offers that in the area. We offer tastings for clients here, too.” Justin also described a plan to host cook-offs with nonprofit groups competing against each other to create a meal. The cook-offs and the classes should be piloted by the end of 2019.
