THE TERM MAKER IS USED AS A WAY TO CAPTURE THE GROWING DEMOGRAPHIC OF DO-IT-YOURSELF PROFESSIONALS, ARTISTS, SELFEMPLOYED SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS, DISRUPTORS AND A NEW BREED OF INNOVATORS. As a movement, makers have driven transformations that have facilitated small-scale but high-quality goods that have steadily eroded the barriers to production and in turn increased the potential for innovation and entrepreneurship. With a thriving community of artists, musicians and makers, we wish we could have featured every single one of them for our Arts + Makers issue this month—whether it’s our local arts scene or handmade goods from local artisans like jewelers and potters to musicians and artists. We can't help but be inspired by the creative culture our city is bursting with. We hope you find inspiration in these pages and come to appreciate our unique perspective here in Fort Collins. Global Brand ENTREPRENEURSHIP SPARKLES WITH SILX GLOBAL Dani, Noelle (founder) and Kelli
ARTICLE JAHNA EICHEL | PHOTOGRAPHY DARYL LOVE COLORADO HAS BEEN AN ENTREPRENEURSHIP-FOCUSED STATE FOR QUITE SOME TIME. With opportunities abound and less saturation than other small and mid-sized cities, our state is the perfect place to start a business. It’s been said that entrepreneurs are the ones who really change the world, and that couldn't be truer than with artists and makers. Goods and services like instant coffee or instant communication were once nonexistent, but thanks to daring entrepreneurs, we now have the luxury to take these products for granted. Without entrepreneurs, innovation would wither. The maker culture is a contemporary culture or subculture representing a technology-based extension of DIY culture that intersects with hacker culture and revels in the creation of new devices as well as tinkering with existing ones. A maker is the umbrella term for independent inventors, designers and tinkerers. A convergence of traditional artisans, the niche is established enough to have its own magazines, expos and

commerce platforms. Makers tap into an American admiration for self-reliance and combine that with open-source learning, contemporary design and powerful personal technology. For SILX Global, being a creator, artist and entrepreneur comes together in a social, sleek and modern way. Founder Noelle Garcia has created none other than a "business in a box" equipped with a community of affiliates who are there to cheer you on and collaborate. The positivity that radiated from Noelle and her local team truly showcased how empowered and elevated each woman felt to be a part of the fledgling brand. In under one year, SILX global has expanded from just Colorado to nearly one dozen states and Switzerland. THE BRAND'S HUMBLE BEGINNINGS In 2017, Noelle started weaving hair sparkles into friends' and family's hair for fun. When her phone started ringing off the hook for appointments and events, she knew she had to go all in. But the product she was using became unreliable and would intermittently melt into her clients' hair despite its claim of being “heat resistant.” After months of searching, Noelle finally made headway with a manNoelle shows SILX affiliates the newest SILX options
ufacturer who was able to make her product, SILX, with the highest heat resistance on the market. Noelle put a SILX display together by hand and started getting the word out about SILX hair sparkles. It wasn’t long before friends of friends were contacting her to do birthday parties, and store owners were calling her to set up pop-up shops to get more people in their door. She was doing birthday parties, ladies wine nights and collaborations with other women-owned businesses. Noelle was making more money in two hours than what most women made working a full day’s shift, and she knew she had to give this opportunity to more women. After creating an affiliate program, SILX Global has grown rapidly with more than 40 affiliates ranging in age from 12 to 65. They've also done some incredible collaborations with companies like Dropbox, Bumble and Facebook. For Noelle, her favorite part of creating SILX has been watching women start their SILX side hustle and make major differences in their income levels while connecting with other empowering women in their area.

CELEBRATE THE ART OF LOVE IN LOVELAND ARTICLE JAHNA EICHEL
Loveland, Colorado
“WE ARE EXCITED TO BRIDGE OUR LOVE OF ART AND VALENTINE’S DAY BY INTRODUCING OUR OWN TAKE ON THE LOVE LOCK TRADITION, GIVING VISITORS A PERMANENT PLACE IN THE SWEETHEART CITY TO EXPRESS THEIR LOVE.” THE
NATION’S
SWEETHEART
CITY,
LOVELAND, COLORADO, JUST GOT SWEETER FOR VALENTINE’S DAY WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE INAUGURAL LOVELAND SWEETHEART FESTIVAL – LOVE LOCKS AND LIGHTS. For more than 70 years, Loveland has embraced sweethearts near and far and invites families and lovers around the world to gather in downtown Loveland to celebrate Valentine season. Love locks are a symbol of love and commitment that have been inspired by an ancient custom—which is believed to have originated in China—where lovers lock a padlock on a chain or gate and then throw away the key, symbolically locking their love forever. This love lock sculpture has truly been a local labor of love. It was designed by local sculptor Doug Rutledge, constructed locally by Beatty Construction Services, and Loveland Ready Mix Concrete poured the concrete for the bases. “Loveland became the Sweetheart City more than 70 years ago thanks to the visionaries and dedicated stampers who send love around the

world through the Valentine Re-Mailing Program,” says Mindy McCloughan, president and CEO of the Loveland Chamber of Commerce. “We are excited to bridge our love of art and Valentine’s Day by introducing our own take on the love lock tradition, giving visitors a permanent place in the Sweetheart City to express their love.” Loveland has unveiled the largest love lock sculpture in Colorado and one of the largest in the U.S. This 24,000-pound, 10-foot-tall, 30-footwide steel sculpture is made up of four sculpted letters—L, O, V, E—and includes heart cutouts and places for love locks on the back. It will be anchored at the Loveland Visitors Center and visible from Interstate 25, welcoming visitors to Loveland and encouraging them to come and see it, and learn more about what to do in Loveland.

On a trip to solidify her Spanish-speaking skills in Nicaragua, she met and apprenticed with an expert potter who took Amy under his wing and taught her the ancient pottery methods, dating back more than 2,000 years. The Art of Massage HOT STONE THERAPY WITH HAND & STONE ARTICLE JAHNA EICHEL | PHOTOGRAPHY DARYL LOVE
30
Fort Collins Lifestyle | February 2019
“WHEN WE ASKED JANET, ONE OF HAND & STONE’S MOST REQUESTED THERAPISTS, WHAT SHE LOVES MOST ABOUT BEING A THERAPIST AT HAND & STONE, SHE EXCITEDLY EXPLAINED THAT HEALING HER CLIENTS, THEIR RELAXATION AND HAPPINESS THE MOMENT THEY STEP OUT OF THEIR MASSAGE IS WHAT MATTERED MOST TO HER.“ THE PRACTICE OF STONE MASSAGE HAS BEEN PRESENT IN MANY CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD FOR CENTURIES. Historical accounts confirm that traditional Chinese healers used heated stones more than 2,000 years ago as a means of improving the function of internal organs. Similarly, there are records of stone therapy used in folklore and religious ceremonies in Africa, Europe, Egypt, India and North and South America. Spanish folk healers called curanderas used heated stones to relieve menstrual pain and cold stones to slow bleeding after childbirth. The popularity of stone massage therapy became more widely known in the early '90s when heated stone techniques started to hit local wellness centers across the United States. The full-body hot-stone massage is frequently combined with other modern massage techniques like the standard Swedish massage and the deep tissue massage as well. With the surge in stone therapy increasing, sourcing the stones has also become an art form in and of itself, with many companies mining thermodynamic basalt stones and Himalayan salt stones for use in wellness centers around the globe. Hand & Stone Massage Spa recommends hot stone therapy in particular for individuals who may be suffering from fibromyalgia, arthritis or other chronic pain. The penetrating effects of the heated stones allow the massage to be delivered without excessive pressure by the therapist.

AS NORTHERN COLORADO GROWS, LOCAL ARTIST AMELIA FURMAN CAPTURES THE TREASURES WE OFTEN OVERLOOK WHEN WE EXPLORE OUR BEAUTIFUL CITY. Her depth and applications of mixed mediums are not to be missed. "I’ve always been an outdoor lover, which is one of the reasons that my family and I moved to Colorado, which has a wealth of natural treasures to explore. I was unaware of the exquisite and history-rich outdoor scenes owned and cared for by the Larimer County, of which my home town of Loveland is part. After being named the 2018 Visual Artist of the Year for the Larimer County, I was given the opportunity to have unlimited access to these 'treasures' for an entire year, and what resulted in an entire body of work that I’m thrilled to present. Our little corner of Colorado is beautiful, and with our continually growing population, it is important that we treasure the 'treasures' we possess. It is my hope that this exhibit will bring the open spaces and parks of our county to the forefront to increase exposure, appreciation and local pride." –Amelia Furman See the exhibit at AIMs Community College (Loveland Campus) through March 31. 34
