IT WAS FIVE YEARS AGO THIS MONTH THAT MY WIFE, JENNIFER, AND I ARRIVED WITH OUR CHILDREN TO LIVE HERE IN UTAH. She and I had each spent some time along the Wasatch Front, but our careers—hers as educator and writer, mine as a journalist and lawyer—made each of us think that we would never leave our established routines. But we made the move and haven't looked back. Now, whenever I fly back into the Salt Lake City airport, I think, "It's good to be home." We love how welcoming we find it here. And we know we aren't alone. For example, I had lunch not long ago with a friend who had recently relocated here with his spouse. The couple was expecting a culture shock, but what they got instead were neighbors delivering cookies. "We never got this in Chicago," he told me. Another thing I love about it here is the entrepreneurial spirit. It's an attitude of "we can do this," not a take-no-prisoners approach to business. Draper is particularly blessed with a wealth of business acumen, stylish creativity and energetic civic life. This month here at Draper Lifestyle, we celebrate this with articles about Wendy Chidester, Jordan James and Megan Taylor Parks, of The National Parks Band, beginning on page 18. But it was the journey of Randall and Tracy Autry on page 12 that was particularly fitting for our family.

This dramatic change happened when we, too, opened our homes and our hearts to the possibility of foster care. We had adopted previously in the suburban Washington, D.C., area. When we next lived in Illinois, we tried again to adopt, but without success. But through a random connection to the Utah Foster Care Association, which seeks to rebuild lives by keeping

Randall and Tracy Autry moved from Texas to Utah in 1996. Randall had grown up in Texas, and Tracy moved there in the sixth grade. They met in a church youth group, dated in high school and got married in college. The early years of their marriage brought four sons who are now grown: Luke, 31; Christopher, 29; Zachary, 27; and Nicholas, 25. “We were knee-deep in raising boys with all that entails, including sports, mountain biking in Corner Canyon, band, church youth group and lots of noise,” Tracy says. They reached the point where their oldest son, Luke, was graduating from Intermountain Christian School and their youngest son, Nicholas, had reached age 12. They were thinking ahead to being empty nesters when they found out they were pregnant. “God totally surprised us,” Tracy says.

Their fifth son, Micah, who is now 12, was born. The Autrys are members of Grace Community Bible Church in Sandy, and their faith is integral to their lives. In 2009, when Micah was about 3, Randall and Tracy were involved in a Bible study. “We were doing a study on living radically and what that looks like. Because the Bible is very clear about taking care of widows and orphans, taking care of the oppressed and needy, our eyes were opened to orphan care and what did that look like in our family,” Tracy says. They were also grappling with Micah growing up as an only child since their other children were grown. Another couple in Randall and Tracy’s Bible study who had connections to Ethiopia suggested adoption. “Our first reaction was, 'No, we’ve raised kids,'” Tracy says. But that thought took root in Tracy’s mind and heart, so she began reading blogs about orphan care, adoption and ministries, focusing especially on the blog of a young college woman who visited Uganda and eventually returned there to adopt 13 young women. “I’m reading her stuff thinking, ‘there is a purpose.’ For us, raising kids has been the most important thing,” Tracy says. The Autrys began to fill out adoption paperwork and met with a social worker for approval, a social worker who had adopted herself. They thought a girl under the age of 4 would fit best in their family. But the more research Tracy did, the more she realized that the majority of other people were also seeking to adopt a single infant. “So we stopped, took a break from the process and prayed about it. We wondered, 'Why are we in this group? We want to grow our family; why are we requesting a child that everyone else is requesting when there are boys, special needs, sibling groups, kids with AIDS that aren’t getting chosen? We don’t need to be in this group,'” Tracy says. At the same time, the Autrys began focusing on Ethiopia because of that connection through their Bible study. The next months were a whirlwind of paperwork and preparation, then two trips to Ethiopia, the first in July 2010 for a court date. The Autrys took their sons Zachary and Nicholas on that first trip to help them. “We saw them [the adopted children] for 10 days and then we had to leave, which was really hard,” Tracy says. They returned in October, and after going through the embassy, they brought home David, Eribka, Anne and Samuel. That was nearly

eight years ago. Fast forward to today, and David is 14, Eribka and Micah are 12, Anne is 10, Samuel is 8, and Tracy and Randall are grandparents through their older boys. The family loves to camp together, go biking or hiking, and they’re all big soccer fans. Randall does a mile timed-run with each of the kids on the Porter Rockwell Trail. They also simply enjoy hanging out. They love to take the family back to Texas to visit. They also try to stay connected to Ethiopian culture by eating at Mahider Ethiopian Restaurant in Salt Lake City, visiting a multi-cultural church and being part of an Ethiopian group in Utah. For the Autrys, adoption wasn’t about improving their status with God or rescuing children.

“It’s not about earning a relationship with God, but what are we doing to show that relationship to others?” Tracy says. “We look through the lens of our faith." In a household as busy and diverse as theirs, the Autrys have learned to let the little things be little things. Perfection is not the goal. “What society says is successful doesn’t mean what success is. It’s what’s inside—your character—that matters, not what society looks at,” she says. “I can’t imagine our life without our kids. Our family wouldn’t have been at all the same.". National Parks Band HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN MUSIC? DESCRIBE YOUR JOURNEY. When I was about 4 years old my family was living in Texas, and a little old lady in our neighborhood was a violin teacher. She randomly asked my parents if they would want her to start teaching me violin, and they accepted! I started taking private lessons and kept up with that all the way up and into college. All I had ever known was my classical technique until I started playing with The National Parks. Their previous violinist was stepping away from the band, and they were in need of a new violinist. I knew their last violinist as well as a few other people that were involved with the band at the time, and with that connection, we set up a time to get together to jam out. The jam session was basically my audition. I guess they liked me, though, because right after the first time playing together the lead singer, Brady Parks—who is now my husband—told me all the bands upcoming shows/practice schedule times to see if I would be available. That was three years ago, and I’ve been in The National Parks ever since!” WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT BEING INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY? Utah is one of our favorite places to play shows. We have such a great support following here, and it’s amazing to meet so many incredible people through our music. Utah has always been so supportive, and we love being able to do as much as we can to give back to the community. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING MUSICIANS? My advice for aspiring artists would be to just keep pushing! Play a lot of shows and figure out what you want your sound to be—that will set you apart from everyone else. JORDAN JAMES PINKSTON (AKA JORDAN JAMES) Acoustic, soul and pop musician
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN MUSIC? DESCRIBE YOUR JOURNEY. I took piano lessons from when I was 6 years old, but I loved playing baseball and basketball. I played for Corner Canyon High School Basketball through my sophomore year. It was during that year that I took a class where I learned to produce music on the computer with programs like Logic Pro and Garageband. I began taking the lyrics that I had written over the years and produced the music for them. It was a very hard choice but I made the decision to quit basketball and follow my dream of making an album. Last summer, I contacted a producer, Mitch Davis, and started producing my self-recorded tracks on a professional level. After recording the first two professional tracks, I met with another producer/promoter, Greg Hansen, who encouraged me to start working on a video for my first single, an original song called 'Change the World.' It features over 20 residents from Draper, including Mayor Troy Walker, during the city's service day project. This song has now become the theme song for the 'I am Draper City Service Day.' WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU HAVE GIVEN BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? In my junior year, I wrote a song for a friend of mine with a disease called P.O.T.S. The song is called ‘Fighter,’ which was recorded live with Reel Sessions and published on my YouTube channel. I performed this song at a charity event on Valentine's Day when a guy named Ivan Gonzalez heard it and asked me if I would be willing to share the song for a video of the children of the local Ronald McDonald House Charities. I agreed and was invited to attend the Gala Charity Dinner where their video featuring 'Fighter' would be shown. It inspired me to help this charity, so I decided to donate 50 percent of the profits from the single "Fighter" to this children’s charity known as the Ronald McDonald House Charities Intermountain. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING MUSICIANS? My advice for aspiring artists or musicians is to focus on what really matters to you. Share your message with your talents. You may have to sacrifice other things, but for me, making music isn't about getting attention or trying to prove something. It is my way of trying to influence others' lives for the better. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN THE ARTS? DESCRIBE YOUR JOURNEY. I have always loved to paint ever since I can remember. I earned my Bachelors in Fine Art from the University of Utah. I did an internship at the Helper Art School under David Dornan, professional artist and former professor at the University of Utah. I am represented by several galleries throughout the United States. IN WHAT WAYS HAVE YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY? HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK? I started an art program at our local elementary school including dance, music, drawing and painting, and art history. I teach private art lessons and workshops. I volunteer to judge community art shows both private and public. I have also given presentations to students interested in art as a profession at local high schools. It is rewarding to watch those students who I have taught take off and become professional artists themselves. I love to share my knowledge of art as well as art history with those who want to learn more about the craft. Sharing my appreciation of the arts with others hopefully helps others to have a greater appreciation of what art can do in beautifying the world around us. However, with new legislation being enforced this year to protect the watershed area in Corner Canyon, dog owners may be disappointed to find their favorite trails are now off limits. Although regions above the Bonneville Shoreline Trail have banned dogs due to health and safety concerns, there are still plenty of gorgeous trails below the cutoff point that are sure to please humans and canines of all skill levels. Braille Butterfly Book ARTICLE MIMI DARLEY DUTTON KRISTIN JORGENSEN, A STUDENT AT AMERICAN PREPARATORY ACADEMY, RECENTLY CELEBRATED HER 16TH BIRTHDAY. The last six years have been challenging for Kristin because of vision loss in her right eye, resulting in 23 surgeries. “It’s medically unique. The doctors have never seen anything like it. It doesn’t have a name for that reason. It’s blood in my eyes that shouldn’t be there. I’m basically half blind in my right eye,” Kristin says. Four years ago, Kristin began to learn Braille at school. Her teacher gave her the assignment of writing a Braille book. The result is “Mariposa.” Her book, “Mariposa,” is the Spanish word for butterfly and the name of the main character. “It’s about a butterfly who goes out into the world and has adventures and develops colors on her wings,” Kristin says.
Theater is Kristin’s favorite subject in school. She loves to sing, dance and act. She was in the musical Once On This Island in eighth grade. She played the role of a minion to one of the gods.
“My favorite animal is a giraffe because they’re just different from other animals,” Kristin says. She’s grateful for her friends because they help her through her vision problems and help her to feel normal.
“I love being able to ride my bike. I’m not allowed to drive because of my eyes, so being able to ride a bike is like a car for me—it gives me that freedom,” she says. Kristin has a teal old-style beach bike.
The book ‘Not After Everything’ by Michelle Levy. It’s about a boy who lost his mother to suicide and whose dad treats him poorly, but the boy falls in love with a girl who helps him turn his life around and even go to college. 34
