ctober has been, and will always be, my favorite month. A large part of this has to do with the silliest holiday of all time, Halloween. Each year my five-year-old self is resurrected all month long, and the vibrant feelings of excitement still haven’t left my soul.

Jenna Moseley, Elorie Slater

I mean, who doesn’t love getting creative with a cool costume? It’s the one night of the year you can be whomever—or whatever—you want. It’s the time of year that little ghouls inspire you to embrace your inner child.

I plan on re-watching every possible cult classic horror movie, decorating inside and out, visiting a haunted house and, of course, baking spooky sweets. However, there is one horror to All Hallows Eve that is hard to deny: the extra temptation and weight most of us put on. I would even argue that Halloween kicks off that “holiday bod” we’re all so desperately trying to avoid. So, instead of focusing on sweets and candy, we decided to turn October around and made this issue all about health and wellness. We feature an essay by Emily O’Brien discussing Colorado’s fitness culture and what it takes to lose weight and, in turn, gain confidence. We even threw in a workout for those who use the excuse of not having enough time. We also feature a healthy chia pudding recipe with that very special spice ... pumpkin spice! And a fall picnic inspiration with local places to bike, hike and drive with views of the beautiful fall foliage and changing aspens. The seasons may change but certain things will always remain the same—like loving a ridiculous holiday. We hope you enjoy this health-themed October issue. It’s a bit of a trick but also a treat for your fitness goals.

A UNIVERSAL DENIM GUIDE by A LINE BOUTIQUE

The Indigo Blues

Why is it so hard to find the perfect pair of jeans? With such a crowded denim market, there is an overwhelming number of options with varying cuts, styles, silhouettes and washes. Then there’s the fabrication, pocket placement, yoke placement (what’s a yoke btw?), inseam measurement, stretch composition…the list goes on! It’s exhausting having to try on 50 pairs of jeans to find the perfect pair. But at A Line Boutique, our stylists do just that so you don’t have to. Our objective is to curate a refreshing collection of denim favorites that are timeless yet modern. KARMEN BERENTSEN, Owner of A LINE BOUTIQUE

STYLE Exposed raw hems, cropped flares, sleek coated skinnies and boyfriend

jeans—we have the season’s best styles. Shop classic cuts or contemporary silhouettes: no matter your shape and size we carry denim for everybody, and every closet.

FIT

Jeans should follow the natural curves of your body. There should be minimal bunching in the leg, seat and waist to ensure a figure flattering fit. Even with boyfriend jeans and relaxed shapes the pocket placement or inseam can affect the fit on your body. Our professional styles know every detail to ensure your fit is flawless.

FABRICATION

We love the signature fabrications being produced from designers like Citizens of Humanity and PAIGE. The ‘sculpt’ (from COH) and ‘transcendence’ (from PAIGE) fabrics contain less than 50% traditional cotton yielding an uber soft feel and great recovery. AMO and other designers are sticking with more traditional jean compositions, at least 90% cotton —these styles are the ‘lived-in’ classics that slouch and wear as time goes on.

“Karina was a pleasure to work with. She is responsive and professional, and shared her tremendous knowledge of the Denver real estate market. Her focus was on the market area we had identified, but she also provided information on other parts of Denver so that we were certain we were making a good decision. We were traveling for a great part of the time that negotiations and contracts were being finalized, and she utilized all appropriate technology to keep all aspects of the deal timely. We would highly recommend Karina to a fellow home buyer!” Norm and Kim Bartlett | Cherry Creek North | Denver CO

Between the informative locals and their active HOA, these Seattle/St. Louis natives have carved out a lifestyle for themselves that includes the best of all CCN and Colorado has to offer: diverse community (they love the variety of backgrounds and lifestyle choices among their neighbors), engaging activities (including the 9-hole women's golf group that Kim co-founded) and exquisite dining (new local restaurants always create a palpable buzz!), not to mention proximity to the great outdoors and 4-season active pursuits such as skiing, hiking and biking (including the Cherry Creek trail just around the corner they can jump on and enjoy at a moment's notice)... CCN is simply perfect for their time in life: to delight in their retirement years and to share in such joy with their family and neighbors—now, and for years to come.

F L A G S T A F F UNPARALLELED COLORADO DINING

N

estled in the foothills above Boulder, rests one of the most iconic and unique fine-dining experiences known to the Front Range. Originally built as a summer cabin in 1929, The

Flagstaff House truly took identity in 1971 after being purchased by local restaurateur, Don Monette. After a large expansion, the Flagstaff House soon began drawing local and national praise. The 12,000-bottle wine cellar is literally built into the side of the mountain, allowing optimal storage temperature, straight from Mother Nature. The restaurant has been adorned with hundreds of awards throughout the years, including consistent recognition as Wine Spectator’s prestigious “Grand Award." The wine list is so vast that only an iPad can properly display all of the selections. Floor to ceiling windows grace the entire east wall, offering panoramic views of city of Boulder and beyond. Although a major renovation took place in 2014, the original character and charm are still well endowed. Most notably, this makeover included the “Vintner’s Room," which allows guests to look into the remarkable wine cellar. This private space is perfect for family and corporate gatherings, with intimate surroundings. The menu boasts a wide variety of New American cuisine, including delicacies from land and sea. Forty-five years later, Don Monet and his sons continue to preserve this timeless tradition of dining excellence. Although only 45 minutes from downtown Denver, a seat at the Flagstaff House will quickly have your mind and taste buds transported to a serene mountain paradise.

enni Lyons and Mike Burns just wanted to put their own kombucha in the house. There was no plan to put it all over the city of Denver, but here they are.

After three years of brewing in the RiNo District, Happy Leaf Kombucha has outgrown

its location and recently moved into a larger facility and restaurant space in Cherry Creek. “Our dreams are big for Happy Leaf,” Lyons says. “And we all agree that growing needs to happen organically.” Back in 2013, Happy Leaf was the first kombucha tap room opened in Colorado, and today the kombucha can be found in Colorado Springs, Vail and various breweries and coffee shops around Denver. In a city known for health-consciousness and craft beer, Happy Leaf fits in quite nicely. “Happy Leaf really was created by the community of Denver,” Lyons says. “We are a unique group with very high expectations of our craft purveyors.” Kombucha is a beverage made from a combination of tea, organic cane sugar and a culture called Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY). After fermentation, 32

the results are a tart and effervescent tea that is tasty and ideal for a sunny Denver afternoon. The brewing of kombucha dates back thousands of years, with dedicated drinkers and brewers claiming various health benefits from the natural acids and probiotics found in the beverage. According to Lyons, what makes her business successful is the commitment to staying true to the principals with which Happy Leaf began. “The standards we hold to, such as non-GMO and organic, have been that way since the start,” Lyons says. “And we will not bend for the sake of growth. The Happy Leaf team is a family; we have all worked very hard to offer the community what we do best.” Happy Leaf sources tea from Teatulia Organic Teas, a single-garden Bangladesh tea company committed to teaching primarily female residents sustainable farming practices. Using Teatulia’s product offers twofold benefits: Happy Leaf can support a business making a cultural and social impact within the Bangladesh community and the teas are a high-quality product that improves the kombucha. “Mike and I spend a long time tasting, researching and fermenting many different teas,” says Lyons. “The tea we choose is Teatulia Organic Teas. The flavor is uncompromising, and you can taste the difference in the final product. The tea is single-origin farmed, handpicked and packaged in Bangladesh by mostly women who are paid above fair trade wages.” Happy Leaf will soon offer three bottled flavors in stores and will continue to be seen at local farmers markets. “Three years later Denver has brought Happy Leaf to a whole new level,” Lyons said. “Moving into a larger production

catch: With the "Man Maker," you just need twenty minutes to execute this exercise flow. The workout is a great way to improve cardiovascular endurance and strength while using very little outside resistance. It is a series of exercises all rolled into one full-body, functional movement that utilizes multiple planes of motion along with resistance training.

STEP 3 | Lower yourself to the lowest part of your pushup position. As you come up you perform a renegade row with one arm, meaning you pull the dumbbell off the ground up to your armpit. STEP 4 | Jump or step in and stand up. Next hammer curl the weights to your shoulders.

estate of the art Considered the first ultra-luxury home to ever hit the Cherry Creek market, 333 Milwaukee Street, a Colorado-Modern style home on 1/3 premiere acre, offers an exceptionally unique indoor/outdoor experience, with three glass garage doors opening from the kitchen to the pool and courtyard. Architecturally stunning, the 8000-square-foot, open floor plan includes a glass-enclosed hallway to the master suite and study featuring a private and separate entrance. There are five bedrooms, six bathrooms and a glass and steel staircase to access all three floors. Two upper-level bedroom suites include access to a rooftop deck. The fully finished basement houses a bar, recreation area and high-tech media center. Two additional bedrooms suites reside on this level and a navy vessel type mechanical room as well. A salt-water pool and hot tub—a rare commodity in Cherry Creek—are outside. And worldclass boutiques and mouth-watering restaurants at Cherry Creek Shopping Center are only steps away. “The owner had envisioned constructing a home of this design for years. Once building started, it took nearly two years to complete and the finishing touches were still being applied in August,” says Jeff Hendley, real estate agent with LIV Sotheby’s International Realty, who represents the property. 42

“ The home is a culmination of natural materials, steel, reclaimed wood and glass. They are blended together with aesthetic precision to create an architectural work of art. It was constructed and designed to allow a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors and the enjoyment of Colorado all year-round,” explains Hendley. The vision, executed in the home’s remarkable U-shaped design, is to “deliver a vibrant, yet private, life-giving experience through the four elements of nature—fire, earth, air and water.” The idea behind this is that when all elements co-exist and align, it projects an anchoring feeling with an abundance of peace and positive energy.

“The home is a culmination of natural materials, steel, reclaimed wood and glass. They are blended together with aesthetic precision to create an architectural work of art," says Hendley.

“ This property is like no other I have seen," says Hendley. "It allows you to connect mentally, physically and spiritually to a multitude of life experiences in a way that invigorates your inner self. The unwavering desire for elemental alignment is at the core of the home’s design and construction.” “The property offers numerous exceptional features but the two that stand out are the glass garage doors opening to the pool and the detached man-cave, which doubles as a second two-car garage,” says Hendley. Together, there are six parking spaces—four covered, two uncovered—and plenty of room for toys and storage. The property is fully gated, beautifully landscaped for maximum privacy and is operated by geothermal mechanical systems. Hendley adds, “The significance of this property cannot be overstated.” It’s currently listed for $7 million.

fresco dining isn't over yet. Sunny fall days are perfect for tailgates, tapas and toddies. All of this lies ahead before we cruise into the famed Colorado ski season. Our favorite Boulder vendors supplied us with necessities for the perfect fall evening outdoors. The sun was setting on YaYa Orchard as we smoothed our blanket over the lush green grass surrounded by sprouting apple trees. A slight chill in the air made for a cozy hangout, and the hazy rays of the disappearing light over the Flatirons were reminiscent of one of Monet’s impressionist paintings. Colorado is synonymous with beauty in all seasons, but this particular time of year is unrivaled. There happens to be plenty of places to ride, drive or trek to view fall's changing beauty and enjoy the perfect picnic. With the help of Will Frischkorn, owner of local favorite Cured, we came up with some must-check-out picnic areas as well as must-not-leave-behind local flavor. With our “Where to Picnic” suggestions, you’re primed and ready to make the most of this season of change before the snow hits.

02 TAKE THE PAIN OUT OF DAILY DECISIONS.

Daily temptations to overspend become easier to navigate when you have a framework and guidance in black and white. Setting a budget equips you with the power

to say “yes” or “no” to a purchase without guilt. You’ll be able to see what’s within your price range and get a clear

view of how each purchase will impact your savings plan.

THE MORE SPECIFIC YOUR BUDGET IS, THE BETTER.

03

03 MAKE IT EASIER TO SEE THE VALUE OF EVERY DOLLAR. When you’re cavalier about your spending, you’re discounting the effort it takes to earn money. In contrast, when you consider everything that goes into earning a paycheck, and the expenses you’re incurring for your home, food, clothing, entertainment and so on, you’ll have a clearer picture of your daily financial life.

IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THE POTENTIAL LONG-TERM BENEFITS OF INVESTING SOME OF YOUR HARD-EARNED SAVINGS.

04

04 HELP YOU MAKE LARGER FINANCIAL GOALS POSSIBLE. Large purchases can seem out of reach when you’re not tracking your spending patterns. Creating a budget gives you a roadmap to follow, making it clear what trade-offs are possible if you’d like to reach your goal sooner. 54
