Happy May, BuckHaven WHEN IT COMES TO GIRLFRIENDS, I’M THE LUCKIEST. I hit the jackpot. My first and oldest girlfriend is Nancy P. We share a birthday and met when I was 3. Our mothers were friends, probably because they both had a boat load of kids and husbands who worked too much. I enrolled in a small liberal arts college mostly because Nancy was there and thought she and her room mate Diana were THE coolest: confident, funny, preppy and independent (they had a righteous stereo set-up and what says “let’s party” more than Michael Jackson at full blast?). Fast forward to last month when we had breakfast together and she nonchalantly shared with me her success as a published writer and college

I have CrossFit girlfriends, summer/lake girlfriends, church girlfriends, journalist girlfriends, neighborhood girlfriends and sister-in-law girlfriends. We have to all work hard to stay close. It’s not easy. And, when we meet after long stretches of time apart, I’m quickly reminded who I am with their laughter and listening. I tell my daughters (two AMAZING young women) not to expect to find everything they need in one person (boyfriend or girlfriend). But, some of my closest girlfriends sure come close to filling me right up to the brim. They make me feel like the best Sue. EVER SINCE I MET THE BRIGHT SHINY BLONDE FROM GROSSE POINTE IN 1979 AT COLLEGE ORIENTATION, I’VE BEEN ABLE TO COUNT ON NANCY TO LEAN INTO MY HEARTACHE, LAUGH WITH ME WHEN I FUMBLE AND PUSH ME GENTLY TO BE THE BEST SUE POSSIBLE. She makes me feel like I can do anything. With a keen sense for the pulse of a party, she jumps right in and pulls me in along for the ride. She’s my pick for a weekend at the Montage Palmetto Bluff. She flies into ATL from BWI and we pack our soft sweaters, favorite yoga gear and the expensive sunscreen. IN THE SUMMER OF 2000, COLLEGE STUDENT AND BUDDING ENTREPRENEUR JOE KEELEY RESPONDED TO A BULLETIN BOARD POST AT HIS MINNESOTA COLLEGE LOOKING FOR A SUMMER “MANNY” – A COLLEGE STUDENT WHO PLAYED HOCKEY – TO WORK FOR A LOCAL FAMILY OVER THE SUMMER. During his time with this family, Joe realized that he was providing much more than child care. Joe was an active role model who not only provided engaged and attentive child care, he helped parents find the balance and order they needed during the unstructured days of summer! When he returned to school in the fall the beginning of a start up business was forming in his mind. And the next spring when this family asked him to come back – and to help some of their friends find great summer nannies/mannies as well – Joe knew he was on to something!

Spring forward to 2009 and we find corporate Vice President DeNita McGuinn at a crossroads in her career. She had owned her own business serving the elderly and the disabled and had negotiated the sale of this business to a larger company at the end of 2003. Part of her agreement was to go to work for the big company and to her surprise, DeNita found success in the corporate world. Three promotions in four years, two corporate relocations, and countless hours on airplanes and in hotel rooms had DeNita thinking it was time for a change. She missed being an entrepreneur and wanted to find the right opportunity to do so. DeNita was instantly attracted to the concept of College Nannies when it was presented to her by the franchise consultant she was working with. In her own family life, DeNita had been blessed to have had the same nanny for her two young daughters for nearly 8 years at that time. She knew first hand what a difference the right person can make in a family – bringing balance, order, organization and healthy happy children to every day!
