dependent on sound sleep. Sleep is the body’s primary opportunity to recharge. While sleeping, the body can repair the heart and blood vessels. It triggers the release of hormones that are necessary for growth in children and teens. It repairs cells and helps us fight illness. Without sleep, we are more susceptible to injury, aging, and illness. Through sleep, we can live happier and longer lives. If you want to be your healthiest self in 2019, ensure you are getting enough sleep each night. Here are four easy tips for making that happen.
1. Monitor caffeine intake. Caffeine affects our system for many hours after ingestion. If you have trouble sleeping, make sure to stop consuming caffeine early in the afternoon to allow its effects to wear off before bedtime. 2.Exercise during the day. Although cardiovascular exercise will help you sleep, do not exercise vigorously just before bed. 3.Make the bedroom a sleep haven. Sleep is a habit. Reserving the bedroom for sleep can help form a good habit.
• Quiet the environment to reduce distraction. If others in the house tend to stay up late, use earplugs or shut the bedroom door. White noise can be helpful if the house is too quiet and small noises are a distraction. • Invest in quality sleep gear. Supportive pillows, mattresses, and cozy comforters make the bed a welcoming place to be. • Fido and Garfield get to rest much of the day. You don’t. Avoid sharing a bed with pets as this can disturb your ability to get a restful night’s sleep.
4.Practice relaxation techniques throughout the day. • We spend most of our days on the run. Practice calming techniques often to help master the art of logging off and shutting down at the end of the day. • One of the simplest strategies to help us unplug is deep breathing. Take five deep breaths feeling the abdomen expand as you inhale. Repeat five

U p B e e t S m o ot h i e NATURAL ANTIOXIDANTS DELIVERED IN A DELICIOUS DRINK AARON TALBOT HAS A SELF-DESCRIBED “BLUEBERRY PROBLEM.” His quest for finding the tastiest, organically grown blueberries in Oregon for his daily smoothies led him to freeze up to 100 pounds of blueberries every year. Now the owner of Humble Beet, a new market/deli/café on Bend’s west side, Talbot offers a selection of 100-percent organic, non-GMO smoothie concoctions. His Up Beet smoothie packs a nutritious punch with Talbot’s favorite blueberries, as well as beetroot powder which give this drink its rich color. Blueberries are, calorie-for-calorie, one of the most nutritious fruits available and are loaded with anthocyanins. The beetroot powder also contains a high concentration of this antioxidant, which research suggests may play an important role in helping reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and cancer. Two teaspoons of beetroot powder is the equivalent of two whole beets—which in combination with banana, contain natural sweetness. With a bit of turmeric, the Up Beet also has anti-inflammatory properties, a bonus to this delicious and nutritious anytime drink. HumbleBeet.com

Set (and Achieve) Your Goals LOCAL SUPPORT FOR 2019 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
OH, THE AGE-OLD TRADITION OF SETTING NEW YEAR’S RESOLU-

TIONS. Whether you’re a goal-setting champion or the ultimate procrastinator in need of a good push, reflecting on your past year and the fresh months ahead can go a long way in setting up 2019 for success, whatever that might mean to you. One year, I resolved to accept that I simply wasn’t a morning person (seriously). Another year, I made a goal to take steps toward moving to Bend within five years. Your resolutions can be the smallest things nagging at your daily life or big ambitions that help create better wellness and personal fulfillment. We’ve
collected
some
simple
indoor and outdoor ideas to help stimulate a cabinet of possibilities. Try a few of these if they fit within your interests and capabilities, or simply give yourself 30 minutes this month to think about what matters to you, or maybe what you need to change, and write down five resolutions. Make these goals as concrete and achievable as possible, both big and small. Then, actually mark general dates on your calendar for achieving those resolutions. Lastly, be sure to check in throughout 2019 with yourself and don’t be afraid to readjust. Progress is the goal here. I haven’t once regretted sleeping in more often or creating an active life in a place I care deeply for. 22

WHILE THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS UTILIZE MAINSTREAM HEALTHCARE, A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS EXISTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND RIGHT HERE IN BEND: CONCIERGE MEDICINE. Concierge medicine is a personalized approach to medical care. But just how individualized is it? According to Richard MacDonell, M.D., owner and physician at MyMD Personal Medicine, “Concierge medicine allows a doctor to have more time with a patient and offer them a higher level of service.” In comparison to a traditional doctor’s office, concierge doctors spend eight times more time with each patient than the national average, which is roughly eight minutes. Concierge medicine offers less of a wait when scheduling appointments, direct, 24/7 access to a doctor and hassle-free coordination with specialists, and the added benefit of house calls. Bill and Mary Brown are longtime patients at MyMD Personal Medicine. When Mary traveled out of the country several years ago, she returned home and experienced months of endless discomfort. Her internist at the time, a traditional doctor, prompted her to keep an eye on it, but Mary wasn’t convinced that it would go away on its own. Bill’s brother in Florida had been seeing a concierge physician consistently for years, 28

and urged the couple to try it. After multiple conversations and tests, Dr. MacDonell was able to target just what was ailing Mrs. Brown. “[Dr. MacDonell] has done so many things to make our lives better,” says Bill. “It was so much nicer to be able to call your doctor with a question and just have a conversation whenever we needed to.” Dr. MacDonell opened MyMD Personal Medicine in 2006 after becoming increasingly unhappy with the lack of time spent with patients in a traditional setting. “There just wasn’t enough

Personal medicine is just one facet of Dr. MacDonell. He is a family man who loves to spend free time with his wife and three children—he moved to Bend in 2000 to find a balance between family, fun and work. He also stays fit the Central Oregon way: skiing, mountain biking and hiking. He has competed in several triathlons in Sunriver. Staying true to his Celtic roots, Dr. MacDonell plays guitar, mandolin and sings in a local Celtic band. “Doctors have a tremendous responsibility to get to know people,” says Dr. MacDonell. “My experience [with this] in medicine has helped me to excel on a personal level as well—it’s so important to be able to relate to people and have real-life, genuine experiences with them.” MyMDBend.com
