Planning a wedding is an exciting - but sometimes stressful - project, and one that can be as complex or simple as your ‘wedding vision’ - not to mention your budget - dictates! If you have decided to opt for a small, low key celebration, then the process of pulling together alll the details of the day can be a relatively pain-free undertaking, with larger and more elaborate ceremonies and receptions inevitably taking a lot more time and effort. Our aim is to take some of the stumbling blocks out of realising your wedding day dreams, starting with some basic wedding planning pointers (page 20) to finding the perfect venue (page 15) and honeymoon destination (page 24). With many couples now preferring to get married abroad, we’ve got some brilliant ideas for overseas ceremonies with a difference (page 8). Alternatively you might prefer a city wedding (page 12) , or something with a modern twist (page 10). For brides on a budget, don’t miss our tip tips for keeping your wedding outgoings in check (page 5) and inspirational ideas to create your own accessories (page 14). Enjoy the issue!

For

richer, for poorer

Weddings don’t always have to be lavish and costly affairs, as the recent trend for lower key celebrations leads the way in modern nuptials

It is a common misconception that decadence is the product of extravagance, but in fact when it comes to weddings, the opposite can often be true. It is easy to forget that weddings weren’t always the grand affairs that modern times have come to dictate. In the 70’s it was customary to return to a couple’s house after a ceremony for a low key toast that would invariably see the party draw to a close in time for tea. Fast forward a generation and the happy couple can fully expect the next day to be the soonest they are alone with each other, as partying until the early hours has evolved into an accepted (and expected) wedding custom. Given the expense of hosting such lavish celebrations, it is no surprise that many modern couples are deciding to opt for lower-key ceremonies. This is not to say that wedding celebrations are going full circle, but there is certainly a growing appreciation for the fail safe ‘less is more’ adage. With a number of local wedding venues perfectly suited to the smaller wedding ceremony, couples whose budget and vision leans more towards a small and intimate affair are now in a good position to start planning and looking forward to their perfect wedding.

Enjoy a white wedding without getting into the red

Tips for saving for your big day from Standard Life’s

Consumer Finance Expert, Julie Hutchison

Along with buying a house and a car, paying for a wedding is one of the most expensive life events we will have. And for many engaged couples, the wedding is something they have thought about for years. But, it’s important to make sure your dreams match what’s realistic within your budget, so you aren’t left in the red after your honeymoon. Standard Life’s Consumer Finance Expert Julie Hutchison offers her five money saving tips for a white wedding to remember, that won’t leave you strapped for cash after the big day.

1. Talk to your family Weddings are wonderful occasions that should be a happy time for the whole family, but they can also be a source of significant financial pressure. Having an honest and open discussion could help you work out financial arrangements, as well as making you feel more at ease about your big day. While many couples nowadays pay for their own wedding, some will receive financial help from parents, grandparents or other relatives. 2. Create a budget – and stick to it Creating a budget and sticking to it are essential steps to take to save money before your wedding. You can then allocate funds to each element of the wedding according to your own priorities – there are no rules, but remember, if you choose to spend a large proportion of the budget on the venue, it won’t leave much for other essentials like catering and entertainment.

www.gettingmarriedmagazine.co.uk

3. Consider your saving options New ISA rules and pension reforms this year have made it easier for many people to make the most of tax efficient saving or easier access to their money (especially for parents or grandparents of retirement age). Many couples get married long after announcing their engagement and if you have enough time before your wedding day, saving a certain amount every month will keep you on track to ensure you can afford everything you want. 4. Do-it-yourself There are lots of ways to make your budget go further by doing things yourself, in place of paying for professional services. For example, invitations and place cards can easily be printed at home, and if the design seems like too much work, templates can be bought cheaply online from retailers such as Etsy. How about making your own favours and

table decorations, doing your own hair and makeup, or even holding the reception at home? Shop around, take inspiration from others and make it your own! 5. Call on your loved ones Although many parts of a wedding budget are inescapable, there are some areas where your loved ones could help out. Every bridal party is sure to have a budding florist who could arrange the flowers instead of a professional, or keen bakers who could offer their own creations to a ‘wedding cake table’ to avoid wedding cake costs. Many will feel honoured and more than happy to play a part in your big day. Most importantly though, don’t feel pressured to fork out for things just in order to follow tradition – it’s your day, so it should be how you want it at a cost that you are comfortable with. www.standardlife.co.uk

Arrive by private jet As romantic gestures go, arriving by private aircraft is fairly high altitude stuff. As more and more couples are incorporating private aviation into their plans, Carol Cork, PrivateFly’s marketing director, comments: “Getting married is everyone’s opportunity to feel like a movie star, and many couples come to us wanting to inject some VIP glamour into their wedding. A celebrity budget is not always required either – some people are surprised by how affordable private aviation can be, considering the 'wow factor' it adds.” www.privatefly.com

Sitting in a tree.... New wave

weddings

Could the traditional British wedding be on the verge of extinction, as more and more brides and grooms opt instead for ultra-modern refinements to their big day in 2015?

22% of wedding invitations are now issued via Facebook or other social network rather than the traditional card sent through the post

Kate and Wills may have saved the first tier of their wedding cake for Prince George’s Christening, but an overwhelming number of 2015 brides (74 per cent) will skip this tradition, according to a survey by wedding planning website Ready or Knot. The wedding blog surveyed around 300 brides-to-be on a range of wedding traditions and found that whilst wearing something blue and throwing the bouquet remained popular amongst 2015 brides-to-be, wedding traditions in general were perceived as ‘out-dated’ by 55 per cent of those surveyed. Ready or Knot’s Zeenat Sabur said: “Generally there is much more of a focus on brides and grooms making their day very much their own rather than incorporating aspects purely for the sake of tradition. “For example I often come across brides who have their mother walk them

down the aisle rather than their father, couples going for a ‘first look’ where they see each other and have a photo shoot before the bride walks down the aisle and couples who opt for a ‘humanist’ ceremony rather than a religious one. There is no longer the conception that a wedding day has to be a certain way – it is much, much more flexible to the wishes and personalities of the couple in question.” However there are certain traditions that still seem to be very much in fashion – that of the bride wearing ‘something blue’ and throwing the bouquet, with 73 per cent planning on wearing something blue and 61 per cent going for a bouquet toss. The survey was conducted by wedding planning website Ready or Knot, for more information visit www. readyorknot.co.uk. Another study by leading hotel bookers LateRooms. com (http://www.laterooms.

com) found that the modern innovations start from the initial invitation, as 22% are now issued via Facebook or other social network rather than the traditional card, sent through the post. What’s more, one in every 20 wedding invites is dispatched by email, with a further 12% being sent by text message. When it comes to the actual wedding ceremony, just 18% of British weddings will centre around a traditional church service this year. Indeed, of the polled 2,000 couples - who were either recently married or hoping to get married in the near future – 38.5% admit they held or are due to hold their entire wedding day in a hotel instead of choosing a church service and a reception at a different venue. Once a mainstay of tradition, the white wedding dress is also being eschewed, with just a third of brides now getting married in one. Almost as many, 28%, now walk up the aisle in a red or black dress.

THE TOP FIVE WEDDING ‘NO-NOS’ Starving guests, speeches that last hours and the couple demanding money from guests are among the most annoying occurrences at weddings, according to Reddit users. Wedding planning website Ready or Knot’s editor, Zeenat Sabur (http://readyorknot. co.uk), said: “While the wedding day is about the couple celebrating their love, it is almost as much about two people hosting their friends and families, and with this in mind I think it’s so important for all brides and grooms to ensure their guests enjoy their special day.” Here are five things sure to annoy wedding guests:

1: Not being fed

A user by the name of Geraintm said:“There are so many weddings where the vegetarian will be a Mushroom Stroganoff because that is the only thing we eat apparently.

Or they will just replace the meat with a nut cutlet and let you get on with things. Like expecting you to have the same gravy as everyone else. So you stand there with the driest plate of food imaginable and are meant to enjoy it.

floor, but we didn't know if we were close enough family or not so we didn't sit there. Turns out the tables were reserved for some of our party, but no one informed us.”

“I took sandwiches and crisps to my sister's wedding because she had informed me beforehand "they'll be something for you" and there was nothing appetising to eat.”

Bammer7 commented: “I went to a wedding once where the groom was a famous attention seeker. Everything this guy did was meant to call attention to himself. So when he stopped the reception, grabbed the microphone and started singing to the bride, no one was really surprised. When he did it an hour and about 10 drinks later, it wasn't as amusing. Especially to his new wife.”

2: Asking for cash

Kirbybajerby finds it rude when the hosts demand money from their guests, saying: “I don't mind giving money because it's easier, but it's really tacky to demand cash. Usually the reasoning in the invitation says "please do not give us gifts but you are welcome to contribute to our house or honeymoon fund."

3. Not having assigned seating

A woman called k4yteeee commented: “I was at a family wedding one time where they had reserved tables near the dance

Happy guests are key to an enjoyable and memorable wedding day, so be sure to keep yours fed, watered and entertained with our guide to wedding party etiquette

4. Bride/Groom making fools of themselves

5. Speeches that are too long

A user called MmmmapleSyrup said: “The last wedding I went to, the maid of honour began her speech by saying she hates public speaking and then invited six of the bride’s best friends up to all tell a story. It took at least 30 minutes and then the best man had his turn as well.”

TO HAVE OR TO HOLD... Over one-in-three adults would consider signing prenuptial agreement, but should you take out such an agreement before your big day?

‘If the couple split on amicable

terms then a pre-nup could make the legal process of formalising the divorce quicker and easier’

Over one-in-three (36%) Britons would consider drawing up a pre-nuptial agreement with a prospective husband or wife before marriage, a new survey has revealed. The study by lawontheweb.co.uk asked over 2,000 Britons for their views on prenuptial agreements – an agreement signed before marriage which defines how a couple's assets will be divided in the event of divorce or death. Over a third of those surveyed (36%) said they would consider drawing up a pre-nup. This figure rose to 52% among young adults aged 18-24. Taking the matter further than whether people would in theory consider signing a pre-nup, when asked whether they had ever actually considered signing a pre-nup, 5% of those surveyed declared that they

had. However, among respondents aged 25-34, just over one-in-ten (11%) said that they had actually contemplated signing an agreement. Regionally, London was the area in which people were most likely to consider a pre-nup (41%). Of the group that had actively considered signing a pre-nup, just under half (45%) said they had signed it willingly while 15% said they had signed it but felt under pressure to do so. The survey also highlighted the degree of confusion in the public’s mind about the power of pre-nuptial agreements. Even though pre-nups are not strictly enforceable or legally binding in England and Wales, just over one fifth of Brits (21%) believed a court would always uphold the agreement in divorce proceedings.

Getting Married Magazine Autumn 2015

However, once informed of the agreements’ true legal status, 58% of Britons said they think it should either definitely or probably be legally binding. Bob Screen, from lawontheweb.co.uk said: "From originally being squarely in the domain of the rich and famous, our survey shows that prenuptial agreements are now potentially on over a third of the population's wedding to-do list. "Whilst it is true that pre-nups are not legally binding, the courts in England and Wales can and do uphold them. The area that pre-nups are potentially most useful is in uncontested divorces, if the couple split on amicable terms then a pre-nup could make the legal process of formalising the divorce quicker and easier, maybe even cheaper. According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 262,240 marriages and 118,140 divorces in England and Wales in 2012. They also say that it is expected that 42% of marriages will end in divorce. All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov plc. Total sample size was 2,058 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 17–18 March 2015. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

Happy planners Talking trends

According to new research, Drones, Hashtags and ‘Marrioke’ and are just some of the latest wedding trends inspiring brides to be. Drones Wedding photography is being taken to an entirely new level this year as couples increasingly look to the skies to capture angles that no other photographer can get. Hashtags Whilst there are some couples who request that their guests go offline at their wedding, there are others who are making their big day into a social extravaganza and are being particularly strategic about capturing it. The rise of the wedding hashtag and importantly - crafting the right one is proving an essential ingredient to ensuring that guests use one phrase to roundup their day on social media such as Instagram and Twitter. Something old, something new Whilst new uses for the floral bouquet emerge, older traditions seem to be in decline. The medieval custom of the bride throwing the bouquet towards eagerly awaiting single guests has fallen significantly.

Planning a wedding is an exciting process, but where’s the best place to source inspiration & ideas for your big day?

Wedding planning on a budget The BBC’s hit series Don’t Tell the Bride has graced television screens for nearly a decade w i t h stories of tasteless parties, disgruntled guests and dodgy ceremonies. Be cool, calm and collected on your wedding day with RESCUE Cream and RESCUE REMEDY There is so much to be done and lots of people to please in the run up to a wedding that it is no wonder bridesto-be often feel overwhelmed when organising their big day. As the pressure builds up, the ‘happiest time of your life’ can feel more like a living nightmare. As a well-known indicator of how the body feels inside, our skin is often the first place to show the effects of a demanding busy life. This can lead to dry, rough, uneven, dull-looking skin – not the wedding day look you will be aiming for! RESCUE Cream is an intensive moisturiser designed to hydrate and soothe dry, sensitive or rough skin to restore it to its natural condition and ensure that brides look their best for the all important wedding photographs. RESCUE Cream contains the same Bach™ Original Flower Essences in Rescue Remedy, with the addition of the cleansing remedy Crab Apple. Perfume, lanolin and paraben free. RESCUE Cream - 30ml £5.90, 50ml £8.05 Don’t let those wedding jitters get in the way and say “I do” with RESCUE REMEDY by your side. RESCUE REMEDY is a combination of five Bach Original Flower Remedies (Star of Bethlehem, Clematis, Impatiens, Rock Rose and Cherry Plum). Specially blended and it can be used anytime, anywhere and is suitable for all the family. Keep on top of your big day with RESCUE REMEDY.

TOP FIVE STAY-CALM TIPS 1. Try not to be a people pleaser. You might always feel the pressure to please family and friends, who all have their own ideas, but it can be physically and mentally tiring. 2. Avoid getting over-involved in every detail. Trying to make every aspect of the big day perfect can be exhausting. Let family, friends and your partner help with some of the wedding tasks. 3. Don’t let your exercise regime suffer. Maintaining the same fitness routine will help to keep your stamina up. A good workout refreshes your mind and helps increase blood circulation. 4. Make sure that you are eating a healthy and well balanced diet so you’re getting all the nutrients you need to support energy release. If you’re still feeling tired it could be that you are not getting enough iron from your diet alone. If the body lacks iron, it does not generate enough blood cells that are responsible for taking oxygen around the body, which can result in fatigue. If you’re not getting enough iron from your diet alone why not keep a sachet of SPATONE Apple liquid iron in your handbag. 5. Keep hydrated. Not drinking enough water will make you dehydrated and tired. ww.spatone.com

And relax....

Dogs Trust’s unique and beautifully designed doggy bride and groom cards are a fantastic alternative to traditional favours. I Do…..skincare

How to achieve picture perfect skin

The wedding countdown in on, which means skin needs to be picture perfect – whether you are the happy bride or a smiling guest. Not everyone is lucky enough to have their own make-up artist on the day but skin care range Flint + Flint is on hand to ensure you shine in front of the lens. 1. Exfoliate. It’s time to eradicate tired, dead skin cells which can make skin look flakey, tired and lack lustre. The body sheds skin cells at an amazing rate every minute of every day. If you don't get rid of them, they just sit on your skin making it look dull and dry. So take heed and freshen up your skin with the Flint + Flint Exfoliator 2x, which has salicylic acid, jojoba oil and microscrubs to ensure a smooth, glowing complexion.

3. Replenish. Once fully cleansed nourish the skin with Flint + Flint Moisturiser and Serum. Flint + Flint’s Moisturiser boasts active ingredients including polysaccharides and lipids that lock in moisture and stop skin drying out, whilst Flint + Flint’s Serum is the perfect tool to restore that natural shine to your face. Enriched with Vitamin C and multimineral supplements, your skin will be energised and glowing all season long.

4. Primer. The next essential job is to protect your newly glowing skin from the sun’s rays. Flint + Flint’s SPF 30 Primer protects the skin and also acts as a perfect base for make-up - an additional layer of protection from the sun. Apply and reapply every two hours.

2. Say Eye do. The skin directly under your eyes is the most delicate and the first indicator of ageing. Prevent this area from losing its plumpness and elasticity by applying Flint + Flint’s Eye Hero daily. Remember to dab not rub. www.gettingmarriedmagazine.co.uk

5. Luscious Lips. Keep lips protected and moisturized with Flint + Flint’s Lip Hero and create a picture perfect pout for the cameras. For more information or to purchase products visit http://flintplusflint.com/

Plan a uniquely incredible honeymoon experience

Once in a lifetime... Discover the Riviera Maya Loco Gringo is the first vacation and travel website build by locals. It was a project driven by passion that enabled local people to share their love for the eastern coast of Mexico online. In the late 1980’s, the area know as the Riviera Maya was just a place south of Cancun that no one knew very much about; not the destination that it has grown into today. According to Kay Walten ‘The more we learned about the area the more passionate we felt about the distinct culture and landscape that we ended up calling home.’ The founder’s intimate knowledge of the coast fueled the now popular and exhaustive list of vacation rentals and small independently owned hotels. Personal adventures are shared so vacations are a true experience, not just another place you have seen. The creators convey an inside knowledge of local restaurants, things to do, and places to see is one of the best travel guides for people seeking an intimate experience not shared in travel books. With a local perspective and online community, Loco Gringo is set apart from all other travel platforms. ‘So what do we suggest for your honeymoon and experience? Dig into the history and culinary treasures at the Little Mexican Cooking School. Sit seaside with a fresh lime margarita and plate of ceviche. Swim in any one of the cenotes found along the coast hidden under the jungle canopy. Snorkel together with the fishes. Hold hands and stroll the beach below the famous Mayan ruins of Tulum. The magic of the Rivera Maya is for you to behold and create memories that will last a lifetime.’ www.locogringo.com
