PORTLAND TEENAGER SNARES NATIONAL TITLE Portland has a new national champion with 16 year old Angus Hollis emerging from three days of competition to take the National Junior Sedan Title. Hosted at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway from Thursday to Saturday last week, Hollis took the honours in what was a highly competitive field with the title only decided in the final race. Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings was thrilled Hollis was able to snare the title. “We consider him a local,” Jennings said. “Every time we have a junior race, he’s here. There’s a group of them that come here and support us and we have driers that go over and support them in Portland.” Seeing the national event end with a local victory was icing on the cake for Borderline officials, who have received nothing but praise for their hosting of

the main body of the field, moving to seventh after starting from position thirteen. Seven laps from the finish, Kasey Garlick from Victoria moved to third as Cornwall came under immense pressure, and a lap later, Cornwall dropped to fifth as Ardie Jonic moved to fourth, in what continued to be a great battle for the minor placings. It looked likely the National Title race would go the full twenty five laps without a stoppage but just three laps from the chequered flag, when Joel Berkley, who won the B Main, spun in turn two, with a small oil fire developing, the yellow flag emerged with a four lap re-start ordered. Jackson Lunt got under Hollis on the resumption exiting turn two, but Hollis responded, and Lunt would have to be content with second place, as Hollis went through the entire event undefeated. the titles. “We couldn’t be happier. The venue was perfect and the competitors, the kids were marvellous,” he said. “All the comments were positive which is a plus and the whole thing went off really, really well. The main officials from Speedway Sedans Australia couldn’t have praised it enough. Every time we saw one of them, they were thanking us for how well it was going.” But in the end, the event belonged to the Portland teenager, with Borderline local Brad Gartner finishing a creditable fifth on his home track, with brother Sam finishing 12th. Thursday night’s welcome function was headlined by Mount Gambier based sprintcar superstar Steve Lines, who shared his journey from motorbikes to

junior sedans to street stocks to the sprintcars. Hollis, who went through the two days of racing undefeated, defeated fellow Victorian Jackson Lunt, with Ardie Jonic third, ahead of Kasey Garlick and Brad Gartner. The race was an amazing spectacle, with all twenty starters on track with five laps remaining. The race had one stoppage only, with three laps remaining, resulting in a four lap run to the chequered flag. Hollis survived a challenge from Jackson Lunt in the concluding stages, to record a brilliant victory. At the start or the A Main title race, Ricky Cornwall got the best of the dispatch and led through the opening turn before Hollis made his move, a move which ultimately took him to a national title. Behind the pair, Jake Avins from Western Australia, was swamped at the start, dropping to six after the opening lap, while Jackson Lunt who started from position six, was the big mover in the first lap, jumping to third place. Lunt would make the move to second on lap five, deposing Cornwall to third, with Jonic, Jacob Potts, Kasey Garlick and Jake Avins in a great battle for the minor placings. Hollis opened a gap on the field, in a very quickly run race, with all cars remaining on track through lap ten, with Hollis still leading Lunt and Cornwall. Casey Collins from Queensland was starting to make his presence felt in

A GRANDFATHER’S LEGACY Georgia Bakker-Kelly is hoping her first foray into the world of children’s literature will be as magical for children today as it was for her when she was growing up. She has brought a cherished childhood story told by her grandfather Albert to life, with the help of Adelaide based graphic designer Anthea Wright, and in January next year, Albert’s Beard will hit shelves. At a crossroads in her career, the book started to take shape 12 months ago. “I had studied journalism and was working in that field in Mount Gambier but it wasn’t quite the right fit,”Georgia said. So she took on some post graduate studies in public relations and now works as a communications officer at the Career Development Association of Australia. “But I wanted a creative outlet as well,” Georgia said. “I didn’t have the patience to write a novel and I like to have fun so I thought a children’s story might be the best option for me.”

The most obvious choice was the story my grandfather used to tell me about animals living in his beard, which used to feed on the crumbs he used to leave behind. “Once in his bushy white beard, the story quickly turns into a massive chase with Albert and his grandchildren trying to catch a rogue monkey,” Georgia said. “It’s a delightful little book full of fun and excitement and one that is very close to my heart.” The inspiration for her first children’s book, her grandfather Albert, won’t see the final product after passing away recently, but he did see as much as was ready and did see the beautiful illustrations Andrea had created to

go with his quirky tale. “It really gave me the motivation to push to get it finished,” Georgia said. Georgia (pictured right) was lucky to some across her illustrator Andrea, who is a friend of Georgia’s brother. “I approached her with the story and she had a read of it and through it was fantastic and agreed to come on board.” Georgia gave her a photo of her grandfather and the rest was up to the talented artist. “She thought he was quite eccentric looking and had potential as a children’s book character,” Georgia said. “Anthea has done a beautiful job capturing the essence of Albert, both his imagination

and his adventurous spirit.” In addition to the main illustrations, the book is going to be presented like an old traveller’s journal, with Darwin styled naturalist sketches of animals with little bears and moustaches. Crowd funding has enabled Georgia to finance this project with this month earmarked for the book’s release. She decided to self publish so she could keep control of such a personal story. “I’ve absolutely loved the process,” Georgia said. “It’s now all about the layout and design.” Georgia latest creative offering will come as no surprise to her parents. “I’ve always been a little bit creative,” she said. “I used to force my parents to listen to recitals of my terrible poetry and little plays I had written.” And if Georgia takes another hiatus from writing press releases, posting on social media and compiling the Career Development Association of Australia internal newsletter, to try her hand at more children’s stories we have her inspirational Year 12 English teacher, Toni Vorenas, to thank. “I hadn’t even considered writing as a career but she opened my eyes to how enjoyable writing could be and from there I decided to make it a career.” For more information visit the Albert’s Beard facebook page.

76 OF THE BEST FOR YOUR PARTY SEASON

South Australia’s Limestone Coast has released a new list of summer sips to satisfy all wine lovers this festive season. The ‘Hot 76’ List showcases the record 76 gold medal winners at October’s Limestone Coast Wine Show judged in Coonawarra. “This year’s figure well and truly eclipsed the previous all-time high of 61 set in 2015, so we think this is something to celebrate,” said the Limestone Coast Wine Show committee’s Sarah Pidgeon. “These are the Limestone Coast region’s best of the best as judged by some of Australia’s most prominent wine critics, so it will certainly be worth stocking your cellar with some of these terrific wines while they are still available.” The HOT 76 List features nearly 20 different wine styles highlighting the diversity of the Limestone Coast’s seven wine regions. “The fact that we have gold medals representing such a large variety of wines and vineyards reflects the Limestone Coast’s varied strengths

Method Cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling, salted water following packet directions until tender. Drain. Meanwhile add chorizo and bacon to a nonstick frying pan and cook, stirring, occasionally over medium–high heat for 6 to 8 minutes or until crisp. Add onion and garlic. Cook, stirring for 2 minutes or until onion softens. Add paprika, parsley, pasta sauce and cooking cream. Season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Toss pasta and spinach through sauce to combine. Serve topped with freshly grated parmesan cheese.

and exciting terroir,” Sarah said. The list is the must-have menu for summer party hosts, with wines divided into a range of categories depending on the occasion. Festive Fizz will get the mood rolling, followed by a mouth-watering selection of Crisp Whites, Fragrant Shiraz, Succulent Red Blends and Sweet Treats starting from as low as $9 dollars a bottle. “A majority of the medal winners - including the overall trophy winners - retail between the $15 - $40 dollar mark which is exceptional value when you consider that they have been voted the region’s best,” Sarah said. In keeping with tradition, Cabernet Sauvignon was the most heavily awarded wine style at this year’s show, collecting 30 gold medals. The wine category features several ‘top shelf’ wines retailing for up to $200, but the great buys begin at $15 a bottle. The list’s Aged to Perfection museum wines dating back as far as 2004 are also well worth considering for special occasions as they not only taste superb, but really highlight the ageability of Limestone Coast Cabernet and Shiraz,” Sarah said. Head to limestonecoastwine.com.au for the full list and start shopping.

AWARD WINNING CHEF HEADING TO GRAMPIANS GRAPE ESCAPE One of Victoria’s favourite food and wine festivals has teamed up with one of Australia’s favourite foodies for the ultimate weekend of indulgence and entertainment at the 26th annual Grampians Grape Escape, running on May 6 & 7, in Halls Gap. Television presenter, author and 2010 MasterChef winner, Adam Liaw (pictured right), will headline the popular festival which caps off a whole month devoted to Western Victoria’s best food and wine produce. The author of five cookbooks who recently won the AACTA Award for Best Lifestyle Program for his SBS show

Destination Flavour Scandanavia has a flair for using local ingredients to bring simple recipes to life is excited to join the event. “I can’t wait to get to the Grampians, the region is simply stunning and what’s more, it’s renowned for amazing fresh produce, not to mention the great wine and people,” he said. “The Grampians Grape Escape is one of the best regional food and wine festivals in the country and working my culinary magic for festival goers will be a delight given the high quality of fresh ingredients produced in the region.” With a focus and passion for

regional tourism, business and events, enthusiastic new festival directors, Kate Kirkpatrick and Vanessa Briody, of Oregional Collective, are thrilled to be on board. “Being locals, we’ve always been passionate about the Grampians Grape Escape,” Ms Kilpatrick said. “We love the amazing food, the wine, and the fact that we have so much to celebrate and savour right here in the Grampians region. With the event spanning over the whole month, there are plenty of opportunities for locals and visitors alike to enjoy regional produce with family and friends. With the festival having grown remarkably since its inception twenty five years ago, joining now as event directors is so exciting for us.” “The inclusion of our Partner Events has seen the festival grow to much more than just the weekend event and we are excited for 2017,” said Ms Briody An expected crowd of close to 10,000 wine lovers and foodies will enjoy the offerings of more than 100 local producers, as well as beer, wine and cider artisans, in addition to entertaining cooking demonstrations with Adam Liaw over the festival weekend. Master classes with local chefs showcasing their talents and local vintners sharing their knowledge of wine appreciation are again sure to be a hit with Grape Escapers, while

connoisseurs will bid for the best Shiraz from the Grampians region in the hotly contested Barrique Auction.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - THAT WAS FUN... By ROBBIE TANSEL I’m not exactly sure why we do it. If you’re one of the people who believes in

Thank goodness that’s over for another year. Now we’ve just got to get through New Year unscathed.

the story of Jesus being born at this time of the year and that He is the son of God, then it makes perfect sense for you to have a celebration to mark the occasion. Continue on your merry way, and have a lovely day. For the people who don’t believe that premise, the fundamental reason for the day, then it seems to be it’s a pretty big waste. You’re spending hundreds of dollars buying presents for people you often don’t like, cooking meals and inviting people to your house that you don’t normally make much of an effort to see, to celebrate the birth of someone you don’t believe in. Call me a Grinch if you want but I think that’s a bit silly. The presents always seem like a nice idea when you’re unwrapping them but then you realise you’ve got to find somewhere in your house to store the item. At my place that generally means on top of one of the boxes of

S.E. BATTERY SERVICE +

lifestyle1.net | 28

Robbie Tansel books in my bedroom. Remember they’re still available at Collins Booksellers in Mount Gambier, or at garage sales in the near future, no doubt. You’re not just buying a book; you’re saving a poor guy from his nagging partner. People used to tell me that Christmas really improves when you’ve got your own kids and you see the joy they get out of the day. I can’t say that’s how I’ve found it works. Inevitably you make the ridiculous decision to purchase precious a gift that needs to be assembled. Inevitably you foolishly leave this task until late on Christmas Eve, as precious has taken a ridiculous amount of time to go to sleep. Inevitably you find out that putting a trampoline together in the dark is not a skill that you actually have. The next regular Christmas Day present issue is when someone has provided an electronic gift requiring

batteries; they haven’t included the batteries and you have no batteries in your house. “Honey, do we have any S, H, I or T batteries?” One of my favourite tasks each Christmas is trying to teach Shaquille about tact. As a four year old, it’s still a concept that is pretty foreign to his completely self-absorbed identity. He essentially has no idea that other people have feelings so there is no need to concern yourself with what they might think or feel. On Christmas Day this will manifest in his reaction to presents. Comments like, “I’ve already got one of these so if you could take it back and swap it for something I like that would be good,” seem completely reasonable. There is absolutely no reason you wouldn’t tell the person who gave you a gift, “No, I hate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I wanted Lego.” After all, Mum and Dad have told you it’s bad to lie. He has learnt that life lesson from us but is still obviously struggling with tact. The other great thing about Christmas Day is that once kids have their presents they’re finished with the day. They have no interest in chatting with family members who they rarely see about how kindy went. They’ve got their present. “Leave me alone, Uncle Gary. I want to play.” The one good thing about kids on Christmas Day is they make it unnecessary to have to come up with small talk. You’re under no obligation to make conversation as the children are the focus of most people’s attention and if anyone needs to start talking it can be about whatever the child has just done. For example, “I think Shaquille just swallowed some money out of the Christmas pudding.” In all seriousness, I am a bit of a Grinch but one of the things I love about Christmas is that it brings the best out of people (although it does also bring the worst out of people who go crazy in the lead up to Christmas). On the positive side, it is lovely to see the people who make a point to do something for others at this time of the year, whether it is inviting people to their home for a meal who would otherwise have been left alone or people who donate money or gifts to brighten up Christmas for people who are less fortunate. The Christmas lunch that has emerged in Mount Gambier over the last few years organised by St Martins Lutheran Church and others is a fantastic example of people who understand what Christmas should really be about. If you think you can help Shaquille to learn about tact, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

WINDFALL FOR LOCAL CHARITY AFTER EMOTIONAL SALE The Mount Gambier & District Saleyards hosted a sale of a special kind in December with the sale of a steer named Trev. “Trev” was born at the

saleyards two years ago and was left behind after his mother was purchased in a sale. Rescued by Mount Gambier & District Saleyards team leader Denise

Aston, who found him the next morning and fed him milk overnight and morning to keep him alive, it was decided from there that Trev would go home with Denise. She raised him, with the proceeds of his future sale to be donated to a local charity and it was in December that Denise’s hard work paid off. Peter George, auctioneer at Landmark Tonkin George, facilitated the auction of Trev and Bob Tonkin requested the proceeds go to Breast Cancer Awareness – a charity that holds special meaning to Peter. Denise approached Mount Gambier’s local Breast Cancer Awareness Group and it was decided that the proceeds would be used for their Helping Hand Bag – a small bag of vouchers to help local women battling breast cancer. Unlike most stock auctions, Trev’s sale was a moving and emotional event, with Matt Heinrich, of Thomas Food International, and Justin Black, of Midfield Meats, for enthusiastically bidding, before Matt secured Trev with a bid of $3000. Right (from left) - Trev’s rescuer Denise Aston, Trev’s new owner Matt Heinrich & auctioneer Peter George.

NATIONAL SCIENCE HONOUR FOR NARACOORTE TEEN Naracoorte High School Year 12 student Tamika Nash Hahn is one of 400 students from across Australia to attend the National Youth Science Forum to be held this month in Canberra. The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)

is organised by Rotary Clubs and offers on-campus experience at the Australian National University. It provides the students with the opportunity to visit world-class research facilities, meet leading scientists and

undertake cutting edge technology and experiences usually unavailable to the general public. The program offers the participants insights into where their passion for science, technology and engineering (STEM) might take them. It offers a real-life example of working life, and significantly expands on the “silo” experience of science and technology in the School environment. The intense 12 day experience will allow students to build their first professional network with other participants. If the students do decide to undertake tertiary study in STEM, they will likely already have connections at their chosen campus anywhere in Australia, which is invaluable. “I am excited to meet likeminded peers and other young adults who share my passion for science,” said Tamika. “It will be an amazing experience and I feel very fortunate to have been chosen.” Below - Naracoorte High student Tamika Nash Hahn.

Super Veterans was won by the high scoring Greg Todd from Kevin Dyson, who also shot a possible 25. Third place was taken by Peter Caskey, who celebrated his maiden victory over his nemesis Peter Klieve, at his home ground of Burrungule. LOCAL SPORT BASEBALL RESULTS Tigers and Central kicked off the 2017 action in division one, with the game being shortened from nine innings to seven due to the heat. Central scored in the opening dig thanks to a Jordan Aston safehit but after that the scoring dried up for Central while for Tigers, as the afternoon heated up so did thier batting. Tigers scored five runs in the third and crossed the plate four times in the fourth to take a nine -1 lead in the contest and while Central rallied late through a double to coach Nathan Meinck and Ben Atkins, it only softened the final scoreline, which was 9-3. Dylan Chuck and Ben Atkins shared the duties on the mound for Central but Tigers just sedemd to get this hits when they could have maximum impact. Triples to Steve Frost and Jesse Foster came at perfect times for the Tigers camp, while Kyle Pitson picked up two safehits as Tigers look to recover from a slow start to the season to stamp their authority in the second half and push for a finals berth. Karl Ransom certainly helped his team’s cause with a solid performance on the mound. Tigers’ win rates as an upset in nasenall terams and so was the result in the second division one contest where South got the better of Federal under lights in a high scoring affair. Missing coach Scott Gladstone, Wade Chant, Blayke McMillan and Tom Rundke, due to State commitments, it was always going to be a tough ask for the ladder leaders. Both teams were in good form with the bat, with South having five players with multiple hits and Federal having four, led by Sam Shepherd, with three for the night. South’s consistency was the key, scoring in each inings from the second to the fifth, and with experienced campaigners Bruce

Karl Ransom Kirby Hillyer Morale and Dean Hamilton on the mound, South was able to hold onto their 10-6 lead, established at the bottom of the fifth, with Federal’s two runs at the bottom of the eighth the only remaining scoring for the contest. This week Central play South on Saturday night, while Federal and Tigers travel to Naracoorte to showcase division one action for the Naracoorte Sponsors Day. RESULTS SOME SENIOR MATCHES SHORTENED TO SEVEN INNINGS CONTEST DUE TO THE HEAT DIVISION ONE • South 10 (J. Balshaw, B. Morale, T. Lockwood, R. Placucci, R. Walter 2; B. Morale, S. Isaacson, B. LOCAL SPORT WEST GAMBIER DOMINATES PINK STUMPS DAY The heat has played havoc with the opening round of T20 action in the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association with most matches being rescheduled due to the oppressive conditions. The show went on at Malseed Park, though, with the West Gambier Cricket Club hosting a Pink Stumps Day to raise money for the McGrath Foundation. The Pink Stumps Day also coincided with the club’s annual Ladies Day with girls from West and competing club, Kongorong, making the most of the shade in the newly constructed club pavilion. West dominated the contest from the get go, on the field, with Kongorong not only struggling to score, thanks to some tight line and length bowling from opening duo Ryan Hosking and Shane Dycer, but losing wickets at disturbingly regular intervals, slumping to 5/29. Josh Wright (34) and Michael Waters (32) then set about rescuing the Hawks innings with a clever combination of big hitting and rotating the strike with singles. Their 61 run sixth wicket stand ensured the bowlers had some form of a target to defend but once Wright departed, with the score at 6/90, with four overs to play, another collapse ensued with very little scoreboard damage, West cleaning up the tail in a five over period that yielded 5/9. Justin DeJong was the pick of the Roos attack, taking 4/14 from his 3.3 overs, with Dycer and Hosking chipping in with two apiece. Waters broke through early removing Niall Easterbrook and while no Roos batsmen really dominated the Hawks attack, the target just wasn’t challenging enough. DeJong added to his four wicket haul with West’s top score of 26, while skipper Ryan Hosking (22no) guided the ship home. Waters and Alex Hentschke both picked up two wickets. East Gambier and Millicent also took to the field for their Saturday morning clash with John Facey eventually looming as the difference, taking 3/17 for the Saints before making a swashbuckling 63, that included seven sixes and four fours, and guiding his side to victory. East

was best served by Ben Wilson (26) and Kevin Thomson (53)- the duo rescuing the Bulldogs from 3/19 with a 56 run fourth wicket stand. Wilson also got the job done with the ball, ta,king three wickets, but in the end, Millicent was able to clinch the nail biting win. Penola took on North Gambier Sunday morning and it was a tough outing for the Eagles. Making only 50 runs, after losing the toss and lasting only 14 overs, it was a fait accompli for North and they reached the winning target in nine overs, losing only the wicket of Nick McInerney along the way. More games were rescheduled for Sunday afternoon and during the week and all results will appear on our facebook page. RESULTS T20 Division 1 West Gambier v Kongorong Kongorong 1st innings 99 (J. MOTOR HIGH OCTANE ACTION AS AUTOFEST COMES TO TOWN KINGS CHALLENGE FIELD ALMOST SET For almost four decades, petrol heads and lovers of cars and all things motor sport have converged on the Mount Gambier Showgrounds in January and this year will be no exception with the Autofest roadshow rolling into town from January 20 to 22. It is the 39th time Mount Gambeir has hosted the popular event with the action kicking off Friday night from 5.30-9.30pm, with Saturday and Sunday’s program starting at 9am on both days. eaturing everything from cars to trucks to bikes, Autofest is basically a smorgasbord of anything on wheels with organisers priding themselves on running a family friendly event. The Autofest Street Cruise and Display returns in 2017, as entrants who off

their beloved machines between 4.30 and 5.30pm on January 21, leaving the showgrounds before heading along Pick Avenue, onto Sturt Street before heading along Bay Road and then stopping at

Railway Terrace for the free display. The convoy will then head back to the showgrounds via the same route around 5.30pm as the burnout action gets underway on Saturday night. The hugely popular burnout competition will run until around 9pm before the off track action kicks into gear with the official After Party at the South Aussie Hotel. Entries are now open and more event information is available at www.autofest. com.au Above - Michael Cleary during the burnout competition. Below (let) - Ken Logue’s show ‘n’ shine entry. It is the Borderline Speedway’s premier stand alone event and it is on the horizon - the King’s Challenge. The January 19 event looks set to boast a field of around 45 drivers with five Americans set to be part of that field, that includes drivers from almost every State in Australia. Steve Lines (pictured) will headline the list of locals taking to the Glenburnie track with Glen Sutherland locked in and Rory Button and Ashley Scott also likely starters at their home track’s biggest event. Borderline Spedway president was looking forward to the club’s long standing sprintacr event. “We’ve been focussed on the National Junior Sedan Titles but now we move on to the next show,” Jennings said. “Bill Barrows and David Vears were out at the track today (Sunday) getting it ready for the King’s Challenge.” With a $40,000 prize purse, the King’s Challenge always attracts the best sprintcar drivers who are competing in Australia this summer. It is the 23rd running of the event, with gates open at 4pm and racing fm 6pm. The King’s Challenge is sponsored by Gambier Earth Movers, Stuckey Electrical, OG Roberts and Shelton Butchers. Lines will enter the King’s Challenge in good form, having finished second behind James McFadden in the recent World Series Sprintcar round at the Borderline, and took out the weekend’s Ultimate Sprintcar Championship USA v Australia Challenge at Murray Bridge.

FOURTH PLACE FOR JENNINGS AT NATIONALS More than two decades ago, Mark Jennings was the Australian Street Stock Champion, and at the 2017 titles at Kingaroy Speedway, in Queensland, earlier this month, he was again a front runner, hacing to settle for fourth in a tightly fought title race. It was in 1993-94 that Jennings secured the national honour, and teaming with Patriot Motorsport for the 2017 titles,he was in the running, qualifying fourth for the title race which was where he finished in the final wash up. Heading into the Kingaroy event in strong form, only 10 races into his newly established relationship with Patriot Motorsport, Jennings was the best of the local drivers, with another Mount Gambier based former national champion, Anthony Beare, also in the running, in fact Beare started the title race from pole but he had to settle for 10th in the end, though, with another local, Steven Gartner, also finishing in the top 10, in seventh. “ The team is less than 12 months old, and although it would have been nive to bring home a netter result, to finish fourth was still a satisfying result for everyone in the team,” Jennings said. “In the feature race, we weren’t able to judge the track correctly as it (the track) didn’t go as slick as we had anticipated and as a result our car set up was a bit off, which was the differene between winning and where we finished.”
