SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run 2016 8am Sunday 27 November See page 3 for details.

PLUS OVER 20 SPECIALTY STORES

COVER - TIME TO START POUNDING THE PAVEMENT The clock is ticking ahead of the 2016 SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run with nominations now open for the November 27 event. More than 1000 competitors are again expected to suit up for the popular community event, that attracts region wide, and, indeed, nationwide interest. Last year 1048 competitors tackled one of three courses – the 10.4km, 6.8km & 3.2km – and individuals and teams are being encouraged to secure their place now with nominations closing on November 25. The big question surrounds Victorian runner Thomas Hynes, who has captured the past four titles, becoming the youngest winner in 2012, setting a race record also in that year, as then breaking that in 2013, as to whether he returns again and if anyone can stop him from taking a fifth consecutive title. Last year, Hynes won the event by two minutes, shaving nine seconds off his

2014 time, which was a year when his preparations were plagued with injuries. Alison Wilson is the women’s 10.4km defending champion, with Amechai Bawden and Michelle Clarke the defending 6.8km winners and Hannah Elliott, who is a State cross country

runner, and Finn Johnson, on the 2015 honour roll at the 3.2km distance. The beauty of the SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run is it is not just for serious athletes but genuinely looks to put the fun into fun run. Entrants can walk, jog or a combination over whichever

COMING EVENTS distance for which they nominate, while the number of teams competing in the event has continued to rise every year with organisers again hopeful schools, community and sporting groups, and families, will again put together teams for the event, with a discount applying to teams of 10 or more participants. For the past two years, all participants have received a running singlet as part of their nomination pack and that will again be the case this year, with all participants needing to pick up their race packs on Saturday, November 26, at the Mount Gambier Library verandah, unless alternate arrangements are made prior to the weekend. Nominations are encouraged by November 13 with a late fee applying thereafter and no nominations accepted on the day. Log onto www.bluelakefunrun.com.au for full details and to reserve your place in the popular event. The event is run by the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes and proceeds from the event go to a variety of community groups and projects.

STRATHDOWNIE TEENAGER RIDING HIGH

TACKLING LEUKAEMIA STEP BY STEP

Brianna McKinnon has made history. The Strathdownie rider is the first member of the Mount Gambier & Districts Pony Club to take out the Pony Club of SA State Junior Horse & Rider of the Year title, since the format was changed 11 years ago. Partnering with her retired racehorse Bertie, who raced under the name Al Zimer, and won $85,000, Brianna competed at the event earlier this month at the Naracoorte Pony Club. Brianna has been a member of the Mount Gambier & Districts Pony Club for a decade, her father Raymond was also a member and is the mounted games coach. Brianna and Bertie, who retired from racing as an eight year old and was transformed into an eventing and showjumping horse, had to go through a qualification process before being eligible to compete at the State

There’s been Andy Burchell’s beard shave; a food & wine bus trip and the annual Shave for a Cure and Light the Night awareness and fundraising events since the Leukaemia Foundation set up a regional office in Mount Gambier just over 12 months ago. And now the locals are at it again with Step to Support – a hiking adventure this weekend that will see around 70 walkers tackling the Great South West Walk over three days from October 28-30. The brainchild of Tash Attiwill, Leukaemia Foundation community relationships coordinator Sam Rothall was only too happy to join forces. “Whenever you put fitness and fundraising together, it’s a winner,” she said. “It is good to come up with different fundraising ideas and keep it interesting. And this walk has attracted a different crowd as I look through the registration names coming through.” Participants have paid a registration fee to be involved in the walk, selecting one, two or all three days, and funds will also be raised along the trail with

The Junior Horse & Rider event includes a preliminary dressage test, two showjumping rounds and a Horse of the Year (HOTY) novelty, which is a timed set course of novelty events. At the State Championships Brianna and Bertie placed second in dressage, first in showjumping and first in the HOTY Novelty to be crowned State Champions. They also placed seventh in the State preliminary dressage overall and were members of the dressage team which placed third. Another of Brianna’s horses, 23 year old Ophir Rickochet HSH, was recently awarded a State Youth High Point award for the SA Management Council branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society. Brianna lives on the family sheep and cattle property at Strathdownie and she

enjoys not only Pony Club, eventing and showjumping, but also mounted games and camp drafting. Above - 2016 State Junior Horse & Rider of the Year. the sale of a limited number of cups, plates and cutlery, as well as wind down drinks at the end of each day. The hard working committee of Tash Attiwill, Bec Famularo, Jodie Gosling, Tammy Flier and Sam Rothall, have not only been putting the logistics together for the three day hike but also road testing the track themselves over the past couple of weeks in the lead in to the walk. The three stages were carefully mapped out so it was easy for walkers to join and leave the walk each day and a coffee van has also been secured for that morning pick me up. Tash and Bec were part of the committee that hosted last year’s Community Christmas Lunch and it was when the girls were looking for a new community project that the idea for the walk was born. “I had never met Sam (Rothall) before but sat next to her at an event right after we thought up the idea of the walk,” Tash said. “So the next day we got together and worked through just how this walk would work. It’s a chance to combine fitness, being out in the natural beauty of this region and raising money for a good cause.” The event has come together seamlessly and now all is left is for the walkers to traverse the three sections – this first two days are 19km journeys and the final day is a more modest 12km. ARGENT CONSTRUCTIONS PICKS UP ANOTHER STATE AWARD Mount Gambier based builder Argent Constructions has snared its fifth Housing Industry Association award, taking out the Best Spec Home at the 2016 South Australian Awards. Argent Constructions last picked up the same award in 2013 – the last time they unveiled a spec home – and this, now award winning home, which will open its doors to the public on October 29 & 30, has been a project two and a half years in the making. “We’ve been working seven days a week for two and a half years,” Tim Argent said. “It’s been made with a lot of sustainable materials, and recycled materials as well.” The 2016 South Australian Awards attracted the highest number of entries in its history with the judges also labelling the 2016 entrants as the highest quality entrants ever seen. Argent Constructions were the only Mount Gambier winners. Started as a small family enterprise in 1975 by Daryl and Sue Argent, Argent Constructions is now run by their two sons Tim and Lee. Personalised service, custom made homes, quality workmanship attention to detail and the merging of innovation and sustainability have been the hallmarks of Argent Constructions since day one and they are still the cornerstones of this award winning business. “We try and step out of the box,” Tim said. “We offer luxury and quality and still do it at an affordable price.” Tim started as an apprentice with his dad in 2000 and pride in workmanship was instilled in the

brothers from day one. It is also why they have a small team of contractors they use in their homes – businesses that have that same commitment, including Sonic Vision and Hy-Craft. “When you find the good contractors you definitely stick with them,” Tim said. And Tim is not just hands on – he is also an ideas man, creating the floor plans himself before handing them over to a draftsman. His partner Bec Dean, who is also part of the business, also keeps her eye on latest trends and is always handing Tim an idea and leaving him to sort out just how it can be done. “It’s not always easy but every time I suggest something to Tim, he finds a way to make it work,” she said. In handing over the top honour to Argent Constructions the judges described it

as “an inspiring design with amazing views from many areas of the home. The builder used innovative technology and environmental sustainability.” Argent’s previous State awards came in 2009, ’10, ’11 and ’13. See the advert on the opposite page for all the details on this award winning spec home and your chance to have a look inside.

LOCAL ARTIST SET TO SHOWCASE DIVERSE WORK Gallery 54 is pleased to present Full Circle, a retrospective exhibition featuring the work of artist Kingsley Marks. Many residents of the Limestone Coast are familiar with Kingsley’s beautiful pencil drawings but may not be aware of his earlier work as a painter and in particular his fascination with clay as a medium. The exhibition outlines Kingsley’s journey as a child who loved to draw, through teachers’ college, his teaching years, retirement and the freedom to pursue his passion for working with clay. Kingsley’s work has always been supported by his ability to draw and from his early childhood he has come full circle to today when he is still producing these engaging works. The exhibition is now open and runs until November 28. lifestyle1.net | 06

The South East Community Legal Service, in conjunction with the City of Mount Gambier, is pleased to invite the Limestone Coast senior community, their families and relevant community service workers to attend a free event during Seniors Festival 2016. The event is titled ‘Wellness Forum – knowing your rights and preparing for your future’ and will be held this Wednesday at the Mount Gambier City Hall (entry via Cave Gardens) from 10am. Featuring presenters from government and not for profit organisations, this event has been organised to inform the senior community of their legal rights, demystify the process of seeking legal help and also aims to get people thinking about the options they have to prepare for their future. There will be ample time for questions and further discussion over lunch after the presentations and we encourage everyone to stay and enjoy themselves. The Aged Rights Advocacy Service will be travelling from Adelaide to talk about consumer rights when accessing aged care services as well as spreading awareness of elder abuse. Local Centrelink financial information officers will be there to discuss superannuation, retiring and getting the best out of Centrelink including upcoming changes to the pension asset test. The South East Community Legal Service will be presenting on Wills, Power of Attorney documents and Advance Care Directives. In between these speakers we also have Virginia Hill from the SE Junction conducting exercises to promote wellbeing and relaxing mindfully. “Sorting through legal problems and making decisions for your future can be a daunting process,” South East Community Legal Service community legal education project officer Andrea Henson said. “We want to give people some of the information they need to make those important decisions and get them feeling comfortable about asking for help if they need it.” The South East Community Legal Service is funded by the Federal Attorney General’s Department with support from the City of Mount Gambier to provide free legal advice, information and education to residents of the south East.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - WHEN I GROW UP... By ROBBIE TANSEL Have you ever noticed how much effort old people put into their presentation? When I see old people out and about, they often have on clothes that I’d describe as my Sunday best. Old men will often be wearing a suit or dressy slacks. They might have a shirt and tie on. They might even accessorise with a snazzy hat.Old women also make a big effort when they’re out and about. They also put on their best outfit, dressing it up with their best jewellery and other accessories like scarves. I’m talking about this because it surprises me. I don’t think that when I reach an advanced age I’m going to care very much about my appearance. I base this on the fact that I don’t care very much now as it is. People who see me would say it is obvious that I don’t care at all how I look. Anyway, I think by the

time I’m a pensioner I’ll be at an age when there is no reason to care about my personal presentation. There are different times in our lives when it is important to care about what we look like. For example… When you’re a young man you might want to wear a nice shirt and have a shower every now and then to attract a nice young lady, or man, depending on your personal interests. At this stage of your life you realise that your obnoxious personality alone won’t be enough to trick a woman into spending time with you and so it’s important to have the second quality of looking nice. Likewise, young ladies will often add makeup to their faces feeling like this will somehow make them more attractive. They may think that wearing shiny jewellery will attract attention from members of the opposite sex, or the same one, making it more likely that they can trick someone into committing to them. They may even spray on an overpowering fragrance to make men take notice. These are times of our lives where caring about presentation may make sense. Later in life a person may want to get a job to earn money. They may think that having money will improve their life in some way, despite the fact that having a job will undoubtedly lower the quality of their life on a day to day basis. In their quest to get a job, they will probably feel that caring about their appearance is important. They will probably purchase some smart business attire for the interview, making it more important

that they secure work to pay for their new clothes. There are many other occasions during a person’s younger years when it’s important to try to look nice. Weddings. Funerals. Family milestones. Meeting with important clients or customers. But by the time you reach your late sixties, seventies and eighties, who really cares what you look like? Hopefully you’ve got better things to do than look for girlfriends. I’m not going to be one of those desperate old blokes who sits at the pub at seventy, trying to crack on to twenty five year old blondes. Hopefully I’ll already have one living at my house as my third or fourth wife. Despite the fact that the government seem to be increasing the retirement age I also hope to not have to be putting on nice suits to try to impress a potential employer. Hopefully I will have achieved my life goal of winning a lottery by then. Or have had an “accident” while working and be on Workcover. I’m not far off letting it all go now to be honest. Some people would say I’m actually well on my way already. I don’t need people in my life who only care for me because of my good looks. I want people who spend time with me because of my wonderful personality. I’m going to be a ridiculous old man with a mullet, a hipster beard and I’m going to wear budgie smugglers at all times, finishing my ensemble off with long socks and sandles. Because I’m old, and I’m just happy to still be alive. If you don’t care about your appearance, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

LOCAL LIONESS CLUB ON THE HUNT The Lioness Club of Mount Gambier tends to fly under the radar but it is a critical community group that raises money for local projects and often volunteers at community events. The local club has three fundraisers on the horizon between now and Christmas. The popular Lioness Christmas Raffle will be launched this Friday, with an Open Garden afternoon on Saturday. Tea at Tower View will run from 1-4pm with Devonshire tea, plant sales, stalls and a quilting display. The 413 Commercial Street West property has been a labour of love for Lioness Gayle Green and the garden has plenty of nooks and crannies for people to enjoy her hard work as well as a tasty cup of tea with a scone. Tea at Tower View will run from 1-4pm. From December 10, the Lioness Club of Mount Gambier also run a gift wrapping service in the city’s shopping centres so take advantage of this service while helping the community with some much needed fundraising. “We appreciate

the community’s generous support in our fundraising, enabling us to support others in need,” president Jan Shelton said. “Most of our funds go to the local community including personal packs for children in crisis care and emergency patients admitted to hospital.” And that is just the tip of the iceberg where the Lioness Club of Mount Gambier is concerned. They assist with youth projects, the Regional Foodbank, local mental health programs, equipment for the disabled and also the hospital. They provide an ongoing service of taking library books to housebound people, provide meals at the Sunset Kitchen, knitting beanies for hospital patients and making personal hygiene packs for girls in Third World countries. Lionesses also provide a more general volunteer service, assisting at events including the Relay for Life and eisteddfod events. In the past 12 months, the Lioness Club of Mount Gambier has completed two major projects. The first, was created in conjunction with ABC Radio, providing a 300 photo slideshow entitled Memories, featuring the local landscape, to 11 aged care facilities, allowing residents, who can no longer get out and enjoy the natural beauty of the Limestone Coast themselves, with the chance to still enjoy everything this region has to offer. The Steps Program was also established, in conjunction with the City of Mount Gambier, with 25 pedometers available for loan at the library, encouraging seniors to stay active and keep track of their personal mileage. “In the past year we did more than 1200 hours of community service and have been involved in more than 30 activities,” Jan said. The club meets Wednesdays at 6.30pm on a fortnightly basis, alternating a business meeting and a dinner meeting and is always looking for new members. “We really want to attract new members to keep this club alive,” Jan said. Contact membership coordinator Gayle Green 0400 232 784 or secretary Sue Parkinson 0415 515 132 for more details. THREE DAYS OF JAM PACKED ACTION IN MILLICENT The Millicent Show is a study in contrasts – from the high octane energy of the motocross to the traditional baking and craft displays, from the death defying sideshow alley to the skill of the yard dog championships and from the high energy fun of the Demolition Derby to the world class fireworks, the Millicent Show crams an awful lot into its three day program, given it is a town of 5000 people. This year marks the 140th running of the popular event with the motocross and Demo Derby again the headline acts. This year the motocross action will span two days, the first time the event has competed on the Saturday as well, and as always, it is the feature attraction on Friday night with practice starting at 3pm, followed immediately by the start of competition. More than 100 riders are expected to converge on the Millicent Showgrounds for the 2016 event, which consists of six rounds. The feature race is the Dale Teagle Memorial and with $1000 on the line, it is always fiercely contested. And while the dust is flying, with the motocross action often going through until midnight, the music starts, as the shearing shed comes to life with the band Painless (previously known as

Sweet September) playing from 8pm-12 midnight. Friday night is also fireworks night and it is a display not to be missed with the Showmen’s Guild regulars labelling it one of the best in Australia. Millicent Show Society president Jim Garner is friends with Robbie Belper, an icon in the pyrotechnics game and Millicent really does get to enjoy the best of the best through that association. On Saturday, the action starts early with the yard dog championships

kicking off at 7.30am, with the shearing and wool handling competitions kicking off at 8am. The showcasing of these uniquely rural talents always proves popular, as does the two day Horses in Action program, which starts Saturday at 9am and is the staple of the Sunday program, the only day entry is free. And, of course, there is also the second day of motocross competition, which will be running from 10am-3pm.

POOL TO GO AS FUNDING FINANCES A NEW DIRECTION The Wattle Range Council will spend $250,000 on new recreational facilities in Nangwarry. Council has decided to allocate the funding rather than refurbish and upgrade the town’s ageing pool. Mayor Peter Gandolfi said council decided to opt for recreational facilities that would provide activities for youth in the town all-year-round with much lower recurrent costs to the ratepayer than a pool. “The pool was only open for four months of the year and the town lacks public recreational facilities for young people,” he said. “The pool site is ideal for the new facilities as it is at the entrance to the football oval and visible from the main highway.” He said the level of funding allocated towards the project is substantial recognising the many hours of community volunteering to build the Nangwarry pool almost 50 years ago. Work on the new facilities will start this financial year following consultation with the Nangwarry community. lifestyle1.net | 27

THREE DAYS OF JAM PACKED ACTION IN MILLICENT Sideshow alley is always an impressive site at the Millicent Showgrounds, attracting around as many rides and novelty games as last weekend’s Mount Gambier Show, while other entertainment will be provided by the always popular Circus Elements, who roam the open spaces performing their impressive tricks, along with David Miles and his snake handling demonstrations and African dancing. In between the entertainment, visitors will also have time to check out the more traditional elements of the show with the indoor displays, featuring cookery, handicrafts, cut flowers, floral art, fresh produce and woodwork, as well as the livestock competitions and the 3.15pm Grand Parade. And it is straight after the Grand Parade that the Demo Derby gets underway. Labelled a Powder Puff Demo Derby, because it is in a confined

space of 45m by 30m, and competitors can do limited damage to each other and with the emphasis on fun, this is the 16th straight year of the event. “It’s how we got involved in the show actually,” now president Jim Garner said. “We asked if we could run a demo derby.” Jim came to the region with a wealth of experience running indoor events in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney and he thought it would work as a crowd pleaser at the show. He was right. In its 16 year history there was been 13 different winners, and those winners have come from all walks of life – a police officer, a 16 year old and a female driver being among the Millicent Show Demo Derby champions. The event runs from between 15 minutes and half an hour and usually attract between 15 and 20 vehicles.

The gates open at 12noon on Friday, with the indoor displays on show from 1pm, while Saturday is a 7.30am start and Sunday, gates open at 9am. If you are entering the indoor competition, nominations close on November 1 and entries need to be delivered on November 3. Organisers are also calling for nominations for the Young & Youth Rural Ambassador and you can contact the show secretary for more details.

HOSKING & MULRANEY SNARE HAT TRICKS Bray Stephenson was the star of the show in the one day clash between West and East Gambier. With his side struggling at 5/55, Stephenson joined Ryan Hosking at the crease and the duo put on an 82 run sixth wicket stand that turned the game in favour of the Roos. Hosking was dismissed two shy of his half century, while Stephenson remained unbeaten on 56, in an innings that included four boundaries and a six. Stephenson then also did the damage with the ball, taking 3/21 from his 7.4 overs. Stephenson removed the two East batsmen that managed to get a start in Nick Gore (20) and Ash Dumigan (32), who was the last man to fall. At 6/96 with 10 overs to play, East was already facing an uphill battle but when teenager Bowen Hosking (pic tured below) got ball in hand in his sixth over, he singlehandedly ensured the Bulldogs were no hope, taking a hat trick, bowling two of his victims and securing an LBW decision. Hosking’s wasn’t the only hat trick of the round with South’s Crouch Shield player Adam Mulraney also completing the rare feat in his very first over the day. It was a critical point in the match. South was defending only 103 and with Chris Lynch looking comfortable at the crease, East was sitting at 1/32 heading into the 18th over, before Mulraney weaved his magic. It sparked a collapse that went from 4/35 after the hat trick to all out for 47, losing 6/12, which amounted to 9/12 and an 86 run victory for South Gambier. North Gambier made it two from two to start the season after Penola made a solid 8/134 from its 40 overs. Kieran Ashby (35); Tom Clayfield (30) and David Somerfield (27) all got starts on a day when scoring was not easy – there were only 10 fours and a six in the entire Eagles innings, with singles the order of the day on a slow outfield. North also has a disciplined bowling attack that shared the load, conjuring breakthroughs just when they were needed throughout Penola’s innings. Nick McInerney was the pick of the Tigers attack with 3/16 from his eight overs. Penola started strongly – dismissing last week’s top scorers, Mitch Lewis & Matt McInerney, cheaply. Jake Schutz (20) and Nick McInerney (19) steadied the ship but Penola also showed good discipline with the ball and at 7/104 with eight overs to play, the match still hung in the balance. But with experienced head Michael Silvy at the crease with rising talent Daniel Brown, who contributed a couple of lusty blows late, North safely passed the target. South Gambier bounced back from its opening round loss with a solid victory over Mil Lel, in a match that

AUCTION

was 35 overs a side. Sam Phelan anchored the back end of the innings with an unbeaten 42, helping South push their total to a challenging 8/165. Hard hitting from skipper Robbie Drenthen, before Phelan made his way to the crease, was also critical. Drenthen scored a quickfire 36 that included four fours and two sixes. Justin Lock was the only multiple wicket taker for Mil Lel. Alex Garlick showed his class when he teamed with Jordan Nies-Beer for a 68 run third wicket partnership but despite that fact that at one point, Garlick clubbed three sixes in succession, scoring was a challenge and some late hitting from Todd Carpenter was not enough to prevent the South victory. The clash between Yahl and Kongorong was abandoned due to the state of the pitch and will be caught up on December 4. RESULTS Barber Shield West Gambier 6/182 (B. Stephenson 56no.; R. Hosking 49; J.
