COVER - METRO OPENS A NEW DOOR Since opening its doors in 2011, Mount Gambier’s Metro Bakery & Cafe has been evolving, and in the whirlwind success story that engulfs the popular local eatery, Toni Vorenas and her staff are set to open a new door – right next door. Walk past Metro during peak times and the cafe is bursting at the seams – but that will soon be a thing of the past. While the bustling, community feel of Metro will always remain, calls from customers for an area to just chill and chat are about to be realised, with work starting on the adjoining property (formerly Beauty & Body on Main) to provide just that area. “We always seek feedback from our customers and take it on board and having that quieter area has been a recurring theme,” Toni said. “Every change we have made, really, has been in response to what our customers tell us they want.” Despite the turmoil of last week’s power outage and the setbacks that incurred on many local businesses, plans to start the redevelopment next door are set to get underway this week. “We will be working from the back of the area to the front,” Toni said. That means the decking area will be extended in the popular graffiti art courtyard area at the cafe’s rear – making that area ready for summer – if, and when, it arrives. An office area will also be part of the redevelopment, while one or two private meeting rooms will also be part of Metro’s new space. “Once we have a good look at the space,

we will assess if one or two meeting rooms are practical,” Toni said. “Our customers do come here for business meetings and the like and we would like to offer them a place to have a quiet chat over a coffee.” Then will come the chill zone, where couches will be a feature, and coffee and cake, and wine and tasting plates the order of the day. It is an exciting time for the cafe and right in the middle of the redevelopment plans will come a trip to Sydney, with Metro Bakery & Cafe recently finding out they are not just South Australia’s finalist for the Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence in the Bakery & Patisserie category, but also in the Breakfast Restaurant. “We were one of three winners in the breakfast category so we weren’t sure exactly what they meant,” Toni said. “But we have been told we are the South Australian representative for that as well.” Taking out a national honour, with those awards being announced on October 24, would be another feather in the cap of the highly awarded business, which has Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards to its name, an Influential Women in Business gong, and the Restaurant & Catering State awards. And it’s not just about the physical changes at Metro. A new menu is set to be launched and it will see the full menu offered right through the day and night, while head pastry chef Norerriz Labrador also has big plans and that includes a dessert

menu. “Nori has some stunning dessert creations he wants to share with our customers and we are really looking forward to doing that,” Toni said. It sees the business almost come a full circle – with the cafe’s first foray into night time trade being a dessert bar – Nero – way back in its fledgling days. The talented head pastry chef is also a chocolatier and a range of Metro house crafted chocolates is also on the agenda. “It is going to be a busy but exciting few months ahead,” Toni said. THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME Before last Sunday, Dylan Gamble had played in four premierships – three with his mates at Mt Burr and then in 2015 with PHOS Camden in the South Australian Amateur League. All four were special in their own way but on Sunday Gamble lived the dream as part of the Sturt Football Club’s drought breaking SANFL premiership team. It has been a whirlwind season for the versatile tall, who had no real intention of trying his hand in SANFL ranks again until he attended the NAB Challenge clash between the Crows and West Coast at Unley Oval earlier this year. “I just went with a mate and got chatting to someone I knew from Glenelg who was playing at Sturt and it went from there,” Gamble said. “He said they were looking for some tall forwards and gave me a bloke’s number and two days later they asked me to start coming to training.” Even then, Gamble

played reserves all season until the final minor round clash with Glenelg when coach Marty Mattner decided to give the former Mossie a shot in the league line-up. “And I was lucky enough to hold my position throughout the final,” Gamble said. His willingness to attack his marking and toughness around the contest, combined with his distinctive beard and tattoos earned Gamble instant cult status at the club and a plan to shave off the beard had to be shelved. “I was going to shave it off after the Glenelg game but the boys said I had to keep it,” Gamble said. “I think it will come off pretty soon, though.” He nearly took mark of the year in the 2nd semi final and in his fifth league game for the club became a premiership player – the club’s first since 2002. And you certainly can’t take the Burr out of the boy, with Gamble’s toughness earning him a notation in the umpire’s black book for rough conduct late in the final quarter at a centre bounce. “The ball was there and he was there and I went in hard,” Gamble said. He has been given an automatic one game suspension and with an early guilty plea will cop a reprimand and a fine. None of that was front of mind this week, though, as Gamble enjoyed premiership celebrations with his new team mates. “I got along really well with the guys in the twos but once I was in the league team, those guys made me feel really welcome as well.” Sunday night saw celebrations go late into the

night with the usual “Mad Monday” antics the following day. Tuesday was the traditional unveiling of the team colours at the West End Brewery, with Wednesday’s power failure giving all the boys a chance to recharge. Thursday was the first chance the team had to sit and watch the game over a few beers and then, of course, there was Gamble’s antics of looking to pawn the hallowed Thomas Seymour Hill Trophy on Unley Road at a club sponsor. Gamble was part of the play at the 20 minute mark of the final term that saw skipper and Magarey Medallist Zane Kirkwood kick the goal that many have labelled the sealer. Eagles coach Michael Godden certainly thought so – seen burying his head in his hands as the competition benchmark lost its second successive title decider. Gamble was the player who won the ball in tight, handed it off to Aidan Riley, who then found Kirkwood who weaved his magic to slot the major. “There was probably only five minutes to go then and you could see as we celebrated that you didn’t think they could come back,” Gamble said. “But it wasn’t until the final siren you could really believe.” Gamble, whose brother Ryan, played AFL for Geelong and St Kilda, said the Sturt premiership was different as it was the highest level he could play. “All the premierships were great but to win one at the highest level I will ever play feels good,” he said. As the celebrations roll on, next year is not carved in stone just yet with the 27

year old leaning towards another year with the Double Blues. “I feel good,” he said. “I feel like I can go again and we’ve had some informal chats and I hope I will go around again.”

PROSTATE CANCER FUNDRAISER Member for Barker Tony Pasin has together with the Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group raised $1000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia through their joint Big Aussie Barbie effort. “Our Big Aussie Barbie was a fantastic opportunity for members of the Mount Gambier community to come together, share some food, and raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer,” said Mr Pasin. “I pay tribute to Malcolm Porter, Ian Minge, Paul Arnold, Lea Clarke, and Bruce and Joan McGregor, members of the Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group who assisted with the barbeque, and more importantly were on hand to provide support and information to members of our community. I also extend my thanks to Baxter Hire, Baker’s Delight and Shelton’s Butcher for their generous in kind donations, without which this event would not have been the success it was.” For further information on prostate cancer visit http://www. prostate.org.au/ lifestyle1.net | 04

DRIFTING EVENT A HUGE SUCCESS It has taken only one event but Mount Gambier is on the drifting map – both nationally and internationally – after hosting a round of the Drift Challenge Australia at the end of last month. With drivers and fans from right across Australia, as well as international talent from Japan, the Mount Gambier event has emerged a huge success and while debriefing is still a couple of weeks away, all the initial feedback suggests a similar event could well return to the calendar. Organiser Bec Dean along with her partner and drift competitor Tim Argent, spent nine months securing and organising the national competition and Saturday’s weather aside, it was a resounding success. “People still hung around even for the 30 minutes where we couldn’t race,” Bec said. “And that was only because the judges couldn’t see.” For local organisers there were so many positives out of the weekend, aside from the glut of visitors to the region, both drivers and fans of the sport who descended on Mount Gambier, many from Thursday until Sunday. “So many

locals thought drifting was just hooning but seeing it live for the first time they realise how much skill is involved and had a whole new appreciation for the sport,” Bec said. The Valley Lake circuit was also a new experience for drivers, who traditionally drift on open race tracks where they have more margin for error and more run off areas. “There were a lot of crashes,” Bec said. “There was a lot of carnage to their cars but the drivers still said they loved that it pushed them to drive at their best and

that one little mistake could see them in the wall.” With up to 500 spectators converging on the Valley Lake on Friday and then more across the weekend, the event certainly attracted its share of visitors to the region. “People were here from all around Australia,” Bec said. “The drivers had their family and crew, and then there are a lot of drift fans who follow certain drivers wherever they race.” Local interest surrounded Tom Hemmings (pictured far left) and Ben Collins (pictured left), with the local hopes finishing 30th and 38th respectively. How many Australian Strongmen does it take to pull a 23 tonne Kenworth B-Double? You can find out for yourself at the fourth annual Fennell Forestry Truck Pull Challenge at the Glenburnie Saleyards on October 8. The unique charity fundraising event has drawn overwhelming support from local businesses and community members since it began in 2013, raising almost $40,000 for children’s charity Variety. It has also gained plenty of national attention, with Australian timber, truck and transport industry leaders signing up to take part. News of the challenge has also reached Australian Strongmen and Strength Syndicate members Colm Woulfe, Rasmus Atler and Jordan Steffens, who will travel to Mount Gambier to pull the truck and entertain the crowd with some heavy pine log lifts on the day. As always, a lengthy list of generous local sponsors have pledged their support, including original major sponsors the Barry Maney Group and Trident Tyre Centre. Fennell Forestry Managing Director and event organiser Wendy Fennell said the event would once again feature teams of six, a 100m course and a 23 tonne Kenworth B-Double. Each of six team members will be harnessed and attached to ropes anchored to the truck’s front grill. It will be brute strength alone that pulls the truck and the unloaded Thinwall chip trailer along

the course and over the finish line. As the captain of the Fennell Forestry team, Ms Fennell’s advice to those competing was simple. “Your legs will burn and you will want to give up long before the truck rolls over the finish line,” she said. “But you’ve got to push through. It’s about camaraderie, community, good old fashioned fun and doing your bit for Variety. You’ve just got to keep putting one foot in front of the other.” The action begins at 10.30am at the Glenburnie Saleyards on Saturday, October 8. Entry is free. To find out more or make a donation, visit the official event Facebook page: www. facebook.com/FennellForestryTruckPull.

CASTING A SPELL IN CASTERTON Casterton is a picturesque town and on October 16 it puts its best foot forward when the Rotary Club of Casterton hosts M.A.G.I.C – Music, Art, Garden in Casterton. It might not feel like spring at the moment but this event celebrates spring and showcases four of the district’s most stunning properties, with each of those properties also showcasing the best music, food and art from the region. Tickets are just $20 and that allows access to all four venues, as well as use of the free shuttle bus that operates every 15 minutes. Starting at 10am, organisers recommend patrons start at the Historic Railway Precinct Museum, where there will also be a range of displays, including vintage cars from both the Casterton Kruzer’s Car Club and Casterton Motor Enthusiasts, as well as historic machinery and the garden club. The nearby RSL clubrooms

and Fire Station will also be opening their doors to the public, while the Casterton Vice Regal Band, the only vice regal band left in the Southern Hemisphere, will perform throughout the day. The Lions Club will also call the Railway Precinct home with train rides for the kids and catering vans onsite. The four gardens set to open their gates for the MAGIC event are Belgravia, Birch Hill, Glenelg House and Kia-Ora. THE GARDENS BELGRAVIA 1 CLARKE STREET Hosts Graeme & Lana Smith will welcome you to their semi formal garden setting with small rooms of different plantings that make this garden so special. YOUNG GUN WINS AUSTRALIAN TITLE Last year, 10 year old Kai Allen took the go kart world by storm, finishing third in the Australian Kart Championships in the Cadet 12 category, for drivers 12 & Under. This year, the young Mount Gambier based driver proved he is a genuine talent, securing the 2016 Cadet 12 Australian Championship, and despite having another year in the 12 & Under category, looks set to be racing in the Junior division, for drivers 15 & Under, as he looks to continually challenge himself. “It’s hard to win a championship in go karting as there are lots of things that can go wrong,” Kai said. “I’m excited to win an Australian championship in my third year of racing.” The Australian Kart Championship was contested over five rounds of racing, and

at the gala presentation dinner in Melbourne at the end of last month, Kai was also awarded the Pole Position Trophy for earning the most pole positions during the championships. Dubbo (NSW); Puckapunyal (Victoria); Monarto (SA) and Ipswich (Queensland) were the opening four rounds, with Kai heading into the fifth and final round in Melbourne at the end of last month, in the championship lead. And the youngster held his nerve to take the number one plate, as well as a coveted place in the 2017 Rok Cup International Final in Italy. “I’m pumped that I get to race in Italy next year at the Rok World Cup, I have never been overseas before,” Kai said. “I really enjoy go karting and have made friends from all over Australia.” Kai was competing in Dubbo at the weekend as he looked to add another number one plate to his 2016 collection in the Rotax Pro Tour – the other prestigious national championship up for grabs for karters. He entered the weekend’s racing in second place and well in contention. PHOTOS COURTESY OF COOPERS PHOTOGRAPHY

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - REALITY BITES... By ROBBIE TANSEL Anyway, with some of this programming on in my house I have developed some sympathy for the contestants of these shows this week. You see, I heard for the seven hundred and ninety fifth time that one of the contestants “didn’t want to go home this week”. And finally it made sense why they are putting themselves through the experience of being on a reality show. They are not attention starved, dramatic, self-centred media whores wanting their fifteen minutes of fame. They actually have bad home lives that they don’t want to go home to. The producers of the shows are actually doing a community service and rescuing them from their unhappy homes. Think about it. If you’d rather stay in a cooking reality show and have some “expert” critiquing every little element

As most of you are aware, I’m not at all a fan of reality television. I find the people featured frustrating for a variety of different reasons, I don’t find that the programs reflect anything resembling reality and they are clichéd and poor entertainment. With this in mind, I essentially don’t watch them. I say essentially because at times Donna likes to watch them and so she will have one on in the background as I am doing something else. Little Shaquille is also a fan of some reality TV, with Zumbo’s Just Desserts a favourite at the moment.

of what you cooked than go back home to your family, then your home life sucks pretty bad. Let’s be honest about all of this. Ordinarily if you invited a guest around to your house, cooked them an incredible meal, treat or dessert like those cooked on these programs, slaving over it for hours, and then the guest gave you a rundown of everything that was wrong with it, you wouldn’t invite them back. If that experience is preferable to going back home to your husband and kids, then you probably need to think about divorce. If you’d rather eat worms in a Samoan jungle than spend the night with your wife and kids, then you’re in need of some counselling. Having said all that, there are moments when Shaquille is being particularly difficult and Donna is nagging me about where I’ve left my dirty underwear, where the thought of being in a mansion with twenty Barbie dolls and bimbos seems like a more positive option. I know some of you think being the Bachelor would be fun but the novelty of beautiful women throwing themselves at you would wear off quickly when you did something wrong, as inevitably you would (you’re a man), and they united in ganging up on you. I have had a good think about it now to come up with a list of things that could be really bad about their home lives, motivating them to want to stay in these reality shows. As above, you’d think that kids must be a factor in most of these situations.

Another possibility I came up with was in-laws who visit too often or for too long. I’d hate to be one of those people whose in-laws live a long way away, so when they visit they stay at your house for a week. Luckily my inlaws are good value, but I still wouldn’t want them in my house for a week. The other thing I came up with was that maybe there is a bad smell in their houses that they can’t find. Every now and then that happens at my place and no matter how much I search I just can’t find it. It might be easier if I could just go out and renovate a run-down motel in Melbourne. I also considered that maybe the contestants live in South Australia, home of the worst government in the history of humanity. What intelligent, reasonable human being thinks that having a nuclear waste dump in their jurisdiction is a good idea? I can’t believe our government is paying money to advertise with the idea that this might persuade us that bringing deadly radioactive waste to our state to store for the next seven thousand years until it is no longer harmful is a good idea. How poorly have they managed our state’s finances that this is seen as a good way to raise some finance? I wouldn’t trust them with Shaquille’s piggy bank. Given the choice between being governed by these morons or going on a reality show where contestants bungey jump without the rubber band, you’d hear me uttering, “I don’t want this to be the week when I go home.”

My last possible reason for not wanting to go home would be if I was the person in my family responsible for cutting cakes. I would hate that job. There’s far too much pressure. How many people want a piece? How do I cut a round cake into seventeen equal pieces? Is it fair to give some people smaller pieces if they get icing and/or the lollies that are decorating it? Pressure, pressure, pressure. I’d definitely want to stay on my reality show rather than having to go through that at every family member’s birthday. Luckily I don’t have that role in my family. So the next time you’re watching a reality show, watch it with sympathy for these poor creatures whose only possible escape from their terrible home lives is to appear in a reality television show. Send me an email at robbietansel@gmail.com if you’d like to make a difference and foster a reality TV show contestant.

MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE WILL NEVER STOP FIGHTING The Community Leader Award at the Limestone Coast Women in Business and Regional Development Influential Women in Business could also be called the Behind the Scenes Award because it is for someone who flies under the radar and just gets the job done, tackling a community issue and doing everything in their power to make life better for people doing it tough. Nel Jans fits the bill perfectly and not surprisingly, to anyone else, she took out the 2015 honour. “I was very surprised,” she said. “I am also very proud for the work over the past five years at The Junction to be acknowledged.” Nel is the volunteer who runs the mental health outreach centre in Mount Gambier and if the award again opened up the conversation about mental health issues in this region, then she was happy to spend an uncomfortable few minutes in the spotlight. As Nel valiantly fights for funding and resources, an ongoing battle, she fights even harder and longer for people with mental health issues. “It has definitely got better,” she said. “But there is still a stigma attached and people still feel shame.” Nel’s message is there is nothing to feel ashamed about and that one in five people during their lifetime will battle some form of mental health issue. It was in 2008 that Country Health SA started to up the ante in the fight to identify and treat mental health issues but it was an almost overwhelming battle. “It was too much for them to get a good go at it,” Nel said. That saw the One Voice Network contracted to set up a mental health activity and resource centres in rural areas to try and take the load off the mainstream health system. Nel became the coordinator of that initiative in Mount Gambier. Hailing from the Netherlands, Nel has a background in nursing and social

work and has been working in the mental health area for more than four decades. “There are more and more people with mental health issues but no one wants to work in the area so where do these people end up?” Nel said. When she was growing up, the career choices were simple. “You could be a either a teacher or a nurse or a doctor,” she said. “A doctor took too long and takes too much study so I thought ‘let’s start with nursing’.” Nel’s interest in mental health nursing grew out of coming from a family where she had a front row seat to those issues, including depression and suicide. “My heart has always been in mental health issues,” she said. “And people make it worse by not talking about it.” That’s why Nel goes to services clubs, schools and local councils to talk about what The Junction – Mount Gambier’s mental health activity and resource centre – offers. At its most basic level, the Junction focuses on healthy living. There are cooking and gardening programs. “It is about helping them step out of the victim’s role and take charge of their life,” Nel said. “You try and get them to a point where the label of mental health has no influence over them.” At the moment Nel is working hard to try and set up a survey where they can check with clients if The Junction is making a positive difference and delivering the kind of services and support that they are looking for.”It will also be a way to catching up with people on our books who don’t come to the centre very often or anymore,” she said. “Is it because they are fine or is there something else going on?” The Junction relies heavily on grants and donations from service clubs, other community organisations and businesses and that’s just to keep the services and programs running. All the centre staff are volunteers.

Aside from the health living programs, there is also plenty of educational aspects to the services offered by The Junction, with mental health professionals often visiting the centre to help people understand their issues and work through them. “We want to be a learning centre, not a drop in centre.” They also work closely with other local mental health groups to ensure there is a collaborative and cooperative approach to the issues. “I don’t believe in repeating what are services are doing – that doesn’t make sense to me,” she said. “We have to all work together.” Nel is also very much about asking the clients what they want. “It’s not my centre – it’s theirs,” she said. “Everybody has potential and we want to help them see that. We teach them how to deal with their mental health issues better. We help them find their strengths.” And for some people, that don’t have family support locally, The Junction is their family. “Feeling accepted and not feeling judged – it’s so important.”

STATE AWARD FOR LOCAL TECH IDEAS ActiveSA – an app proposal that aims to be a one stop shop for helping people to connect with local sports in South Australia. This concept, the brainchild of local teenagers Brendan Bachmann, Caleb Bachmann and Jess Leaver, has gone on to take out the Youth Mount Gambier and State Champion Awards at the Unleashed Open Data Competition. Unleashed is the South Australian host of GovHack, a nationwide event that brings together people simultaneously around Australia and New Zealand to create new ideas and concepts using open data in just 46 hours of competition time. The concept is to come up with great ideas on how to make data more accessible to the public. Think apps, websites etc – it doesn’t have to be a working model – just a great concept. The competition is judged on the team’s entry in the form of a 3 minute video recorded over the weekend, describing how the concept works and why it would be a benefit in connecting people with open data. This year, the competition ran from Friday, July 29, until Sunday, July 31, and

was open for two categories - NexGen (Youth) for those aged 13-18 years and Unleashed (Adults) for those over 18 years of age.

LOCAL SPORT GLENBURNIE BREAKS PREMIERSHIP DROUGHT

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association’s 2016 Mt Gambier Community RSL grand finals were recently played at the Mt Gambier Bowls Club with Post-Tel and Glenburnie contesting the Kilsby Shield and Moorak Blue and Kongorong contesting the Malseed Shield. The Kilsby Shield final started with Glenburnie scoring on the first two ends, scoring seven shots, to have a good lead by the halfway mark, from then on Glenburnie controlled the lead, until the score was within two shots halfway through the second half but Glenburnie steadied and finally beat the minor premiers Post-Tel by nine shots, giving Glenburnie their first Kilsby Shield premiership since 1993. The Malseed Shield final had the minor premiers Kongorong level with Moorak Blue at the halfway mark and the lead changed many times in the second half but in the end the minor premiers Kongorong won the 2016 Malseed Shield premiership by nine shots giving them their first Malseed Premiership since 1994.

WEATHER TESTS SOUTH EAST VETERANS

TOUCH FOOTBALL SEASON SET TO KICK OFF

A field of 59 South East Golf Veterans recently arrived at Naracoorte in fine weather, which quickly turned nasty after lunch, and consequently only 28 diehards finished 18 holes, the rest took shelter from the tempest. The winner of the prestigious shield of Monfries and Porter, (foundation members of the association,) was Adrian Thiele, who, after having 38 points, tumbled into the clubhouse to announce his good score. He took out Division 2 from Swampy on 36, and Bob Davies 34. Division 1 winner was Terry Chant, on 35, from Tony Wilson, 34, and Milan Hodak, 33, on a countback. The 9 hole competition for those fair weather players was won by starters, Graham Henschke, John Shepherd and Brian Sherlock. Nearest The Pins were Colin Wright, Murray Telfer and Wally Altschwager. Members should note that the next outing is at the Blue Lake Golf Club on October 10, instead of the Beachport course, which is closed. Beachport will get a turn on November 7, all being well

PETS & LIVESTOCK

The annual preseason pennant challenge for the Earl/Scudds Shield saw 24 ladies and 48 men bowlers represent Millicent against Mount Gambier RSL & District Bowling Club last month. Although Millicent had the home town advantage, the Mount Gambier RSL squad proved too strong and took the shield back to their clubrooms, but the team of Lyn Scudds, Carlene Godden, Mary Campbell and Ros Varcoe were the bests scoring ladies’ team and helped Millicent’s overall score get a bit closer to a win this year. John Scudds congratulated Reg Earl and the Mount Gambier RSL players on another victory and handed the shield back to them for safe keeping until next year when we will return to Mount Gambier to try to steal the shield away. Wayne Burris and Glenn Brown were the winning combination when 58 bowlers played in the Mod Cleaning 2-4-2 last month with the final score of 35+21. Other winning teams were runners-up Iain Campbell, David Botting and Chris Earl (33+15), Alan Correll and Faye Hill (32+8), John Scudds and Carol Gibbs (32+3), Derek Bowering and Carlene Godden (32+2), John Eldridge and Graham Parsons (31+7), Andre Reinders and Sam Schofield (31+4), Steve Carnellor and Madeleine Schapel (31+3), Terry Barnes and Helen Clifford (30+10), Ian Ros and John Drew (30+7), Malcolm Wright and Dell Parsons (30+1), Neil Whelan and Rob Chambers (29+4), Rod Horne and Margaret Fennell (29+2) and Phill Dowdell and Judy Cheer (28+2). The results and the number of participants was encouraging and the standard of play, along with the condition of the greens, should give the selectors hope when they tackle the hard job of forming teams for the start of, what we can only hope, is a very successful season for the Millicent Bowling Club. Above - Reg Earl & John Scudds with the coveted shield.
