LOCAL STUDENTS EXCEL AT HIGHLAND DANCING CHAMPIONSHIPS Students from the Margaret Cleves School of Dancing returned home from Adelaide with outstanding results from the Champion of Champions Championships competition, in which more than 300 dancers from Australia, New Zealand and Scotland competed. The competition, which is held every two years, is the ultimate highland dancing competition in Australia, and adjudicators from Scotland, Canada and Australia judged the two day event. After working hard leading up to the weekend, all of the students excelled, coming home with a swag of medals, sashes and trophies and doing Mount Gambier proud. Four dancers from the school qualified to take part in the highest

level of competition – the Champion of Champions Championships, in which a dancer must have won 1st, 2nd or 3rd overall in a registered championship to be eligible to compete. Eight year old Lucy Edwards placed 4th overall in the Champion of Champions 7-11yrs Championship, and was the only South Australian dancer to be placed in the top six overall in any age group of the Champion of Champions Championships. Lucy also won the South Australian 7-9yrs Championship, with 2nd and 3rd places going to dancers from Western Australia and Queensland respectively. Lucy also placed 2nd in the 7-9yrs Celtic Premier Premiership. Hailee Pearce, who had also qualified to compete in the Champion of Champions Championship, won a 5th and 6th for individual dances in the 7-11yrs Championship. She also placed 4th overall in the South Australian 7-9yrs Championship and 4th in the 7-9yrs Celtic Premier Premiership. Ebony McDonald had qualified for the 12-15yrs Champion of Champions Championship, putting in a strong performance and placed 6th overall in the South Australian 12-13yrs Championship, as well as 6th in the 12-13yrs Celtic Premier Premiership. Sarah Hanel danced in the Champion of Champions 16yrs & Over Championship, which was won by Adult World Champion Ellis Hayes from Scotland. Sarah placed 4th overall in the South Australian 18-20yrs Championship, as well as placing 5th

in the 18-20yrs Celtic Premier Premiership. Also in the Premier section was Tulle Perryman, who won 4th place overall in the 12-13yrs Restricted Premiership on the Saturday and 2nd in the 12-13yrs Restricted Premiership on the Sunday. Abbey Freebairn also competed in the Premier section, placing 3rd in the 10-11yrs Restricted Premiership on the Saturday and 4th in the 10-11yrs Restricted Premiership on the Sunday. Abbey also won a 4th placing for an individual dance in the South Australian 10-11yrs Championship and a bronze medal in the 10-11yrs Celtic Premier Premiership. In the PrePremier levels – in which dancers compete before moving to Premier level – Isabelle Bidese placed 2nd overall in the 7-8yrs Novice Title. Ellie Mullan was placed 4th overall in the Novice 9-10yrs Title on Saturday and 3rd in the 9-10yrs Novice Title on Sunday. Emily Williams won 4th place overall in both of the Novice 13yrs & over Titles on Saturday and Sunday. Evie Edwards won 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze in the Primary 6yrs section. Dancers

are now preparing for the Southern States Championships and competition, to be held at The Icehouse in Mount Gambier, on the June long weekend.

NATIONAL SQUAD SELECTION FOR LOCAL NETBALLERS

Not only did three South East born and bred netballers form the backbone of South Australia’s national championship winning performance at the Under 17 National netball Championships in Perth last week, the trio has also secured selection in the Under 17 Australian squad. Former Western Border netballers, captain Mary Wilson and defender Sienna Allen, and Kowree-Naracoorte-Tatiara mid courter and team vice captain Maisie Nankivell have all earned the call up to the national squad after all three were part of the SA line-up that did not drop a game at the nationals. All three girls couldn’t fault the preparation of the team and for Mary and Maisie, it was a case of third time lucky with the duo having played side by side in Under 15 Schoolgirls and last year’s Under 17 line-up before last week’s title winning success. For Sienna, it was her first taste of State netball and certainly one to savour – her name now part of netballing history, just as her mother Nicola Allen’s (Day) is as part of the 1991 winning team in the same age group. South Australia had six players all up selected in the national squad. For the talented goaler and skipper, who has just been named the vice captain of her Premier League Reserves line-up for her club team Phoenix, the victory was a dream come true. “It was an amazing feeling,” Mary, who is currently studying at Scotch College, in Adelaide, said. Along with Sienna, there were a handful of other players, suiting up at a national competition for the first time, with the remainder of the team having similar resumes to Mary and Maisie, who is also now attending school in Adelaide, at Immanuel College. “The team just gelled so well, though, and every player took it in their stride – you couldn’t pick the experienced from the non-experienced ones on court.” On court, Mary was totally comfortable with the added pressure of captaincy. “On court, a good captain just makes sure they play their best,” Mary said. “It was more off the court where I sometimes wondered, should

I be saying this, should I be doing that, but mostly it was just such an honour.” Of course, sharing the leadership duties with her long time team mates Maisie, who was her deputy, made it all the more special. “After we won, we just looked at each other and said “third time lucky”.” Mary said. Mary praised the coaching staff for the meticulous preparation the team underwent ahead of the nationals and Sienna agreed, the intensity of training and the lead up practice matches made all the difference. “We played Premier League teams and the State Under 19 team and we didn’t lose a game in the lead up either,” Mary said. “Our coach would even tell us we were five goals down with 10 minutes to play and we had to get in front, it was intense but great preparation,” Mary, who also represented South Australia in SAPSASA netball, said. For debutante Sienna, to emerge a national champion is an amazing experience. The 16 year old went in not knowing what to expect but loved her first nationals experience. “I had no idea what the competition would be like,” Sienna said. “But even with the easier teams you still can’t take your foot off the pedal – you always had to play your best game.” Sienna has enjoyed some specialist talent identification training, as well as her Premier League training with Garville, and said combined with the skill development done by State coaches, she has seen vast improvement in her footwork and ability to read the play. “I now understand the intensity you need to play at and that you have to stay at that level the whole time,” she said. Next on Mary’s radar is playing her best possible netball for Phoenix, where she is a permanent fixture in the Reserves line-up and is a squad member for the Premier League line-up as well. “I am really looking forward to continuing to work hard and be successful this season,” she said. “We have had great intensity at club training.” Sienna also has club commitments in sights, debuting for Garville’s Premier League team last week as her star continues to rise. Maisie is also part of a Premier League squad, playing with the Matrics Netball Club, and we will get the former KNTNA player’s take on the latest development in her burgeoning career in next week’s Lifestyle1..

This coming weekend Mount Gambier Karting Club will play host to Rd 2 of the Alpha Industries South Australian Kart Championships at its Glenburnie Raceway complex. The five round series began in Whyalla in Feburary and will conclude in the Adelaide Hills at Monarto in September, later this year. Catering for drivers from as young as 7, the sport offers a number of different levels of racing for all ages. Close to 100 of the states best drivers are expected to travel to the South East for the event with entries being received from all across the state with a large number of Victorian drivers also making the journey. Racing is expected to get underway mid Saturday morning with heat races to be held throughout the afternoon.

Competitors will return to the circuit again early Sunday morning to battle it out during the finals, with drivers all competing for championship points. Free entry for the public along with canteen facilities are available trackside, and the exciting and close competition that kart racing delivers will surly provide both an entertaining and affordable weekend for those in attendance.

GETTING ACTIVE IN APRIL Portland District Health’s community engagement and fundraising officer Carolyn Malseed has had a few different titles over time but never has she been known as `rock star’. Now she has that title to her credit after being named the inaugural `rock star’ in PDH’s Active April competition. The competition is tracking not only the most hours of physical activity undertaken by staff members but the creative and innovative ways they find to do at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. CEO Christine Giles has championed the initiative and is challenging all staff to register and participate in Active April. Within the first week 21 staff members had signed up to the challenge and more are joining every day. The community is also being encouraged to join the challenge. PDH health promotion team member Kelly Edwards said the campaign initiated by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was free to join and encouraged people to do at least 30 minutes of exercise each day in April. “We are offering staff incentives to be active for April with the intention of motivating future activity coming into the winter months,” she said. The PDH initiative includes walking groups around the hospital walking tracks. People joining the challenge receive 10 free gym passes and other discount offers. Orange Cake 185g butter, softened 1 cup caster sugar 2 1/2 tspns finely grated orange rind 3 eggs 2 cups self-raising flour, sifted 2 tablespoons orange juice 200ml creme fraiche 1/2 cup thickened cream 1/4 cup icing sugar mixture 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange rind Orange zest, to decorate Method Preheat oven to 180C/160C fanforced. Grease a 7cm-deep, 11cm x 21cm (base) loaf pan. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, sugar and

2 teaspoons orange rind until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in flour, orange juice and 1/2 cup creme fraiche. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Smooth surface. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes or until a skewer inserted in centre of loaf comes out clean (cover loosely with foil if overbrowning during cooking). Stand in pan for 10 minutes. Turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Using an electric mixer, beat cream, icing sugar and remaining orange rind in a small bowl until just-firm peaks form. Add remaining creme fraiche. Fold until just combined. Spread frosting over top of loaf. Top with zest. Serve.

What started in 1998 as a way to honour those affected by breast cancer and to support research into the disease has grown into Australia’s largest breast cancer fundraiser involving more than 130,000 participants around the nation, raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Increasingly, the colourful event has become a way for groups of families and friends to participate in a healthy, fun activity to kick off their Mother’s Day. According to Mother’s Day Classic CEO Sharon Morris, the event is no average fun run. “It is a powerful day for families and friends to support breast cancer survivors and those who have lost loved ones to the disease,” Ms Morris said. “Mother’s Day Classic is not about breaking speed records. Our focus is on participation, whether you walk, run or volunteer. Many people have fun dressing up: you’ll see everything from pink pirates to teams in tutus. “It is also about fundraising, and this year we have set a new target to provide $4 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation to fund lifechanging breast cancer research.” The Mother’s Day Classic will be held in more than 100 locations, from capital cities to remote towns, all around Australia, including locally in Mount Gambier for the fourth consecutive year. The Mount Gambier event will be held at the Valley Lakes at 10am, with online registrations available until May 4, and on the day registrations open between 8:30am and 9:30am. Registrations are OPEN NOW at http://www.mothersdayclassic.com. au/register/ For 2016, Australia’s biggest national Mother’s Day event is setting participants a special challenge. “The more we raise, the faster a cure can be found – this year if every participant raises

NBCF funds life-changing research including better diagnosis and treatment options and improved quality of life after treatment. “Mother’s Day Classic participants can be confident that 100 percent of fundraising from the event goes straight to NBCF – there’s not many charity events that can say that.” Overall, the Mother’s Day Classic community has raised $27.4 million and funded more than 30 projects, making us the largest fundraiser for breast cancer research in Australia. “NBCF projects have been internationally recognised for their impact on health outcomes and quality of life for women with breast cancer. This research has outcomes which can be applied to all cancers, not just breast cancer,” Ms Morris said.

Pumpkin & goat’s cheese risotto 20g unsalted butter 1 large leek (white part only), finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 500g pumpkin, peeled, diced into 1cm pieces Zest of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon chopped thyme leaves 100ml dry white wine 900ml chicken or vegetable stock 250g Arborio Rice 1/2 cup (60g) frozen peas 100g soft goat’s cheese, crumbled Baby rocket leaves, to serve Method Melt butter in a deep frypan over low heat. Cook leek for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add garlic, pumpkin, half

the zest and half the thyme, then stir to coat. Add wine, cover and cook for 10 minutes or until pumpkin is almost cooked. Meanwhile, bring stock to the boil in a pan. Reduce heat to very low and simmer. Add the rice to pumpkin mixture and cook for 1-2 minutes to coat the grains. Add stock 1 ladleful at a time, allowing each to be absorbed before adding the next. Continue for 12 minutes, stirring constantly, until stock is absorbed and rice is cooked but firm to the bite. Season to taste. Stir in peas and half the cheese. Serve topped with the remaining zest, thyme, cheese and rocket.
