LOCAL Cruise ship season in full swing The 2016 cruise ship season, which is expected to inject millions into the Glenelg Shire economy, is underway. P&O vessel the Pacific Jewel arrived in Portland last week carrying 2600 passengers and crew. That visit is followed this week by the arrival of the Pacific Eden on Wednesday and a return visit three weeks later on Saturday, February 6. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said countless volunteers, business owners, tourism leaders and council staff had worked tirelessly to coordinate the long-awaited visits, which are three of nine secured over the next three years. “Portland is abuzz with excitement for the start of this bustling tourist season which brings huge economic benefits to our community, supporting local business and local jobs,” he said. “Last year more than $1 million was injected into the local economy from three cruise ship visits. Council is predicting an even bigger result for this 2016 season which will bring 7000 visitors to Portland over the next six weeks – the largest injection of tourists this region has ever experienced. “Council is in talks with some of the world’s biggest cruise operators to include Portland in future schedules. This is a direct result of our great onshore ratings which can only be achieved by the significant efforts of our local community who have got behind this important tourism opportunity. Portland is considered a destination of choice, a rating we should all be extremely proud of.”

The entertainment began as soon as the Pacific Jewel’s passengers disembarked with performances by the Winda-Mara Dancers, live music, sand sculptures on the foreshore, and more than 130 community market stallholders. Shuttle buses transported passengers across the local area showcasing key tourist destinations including the Botanic Gardens, the Port of Portland and key CBD sites to allow passengers to explore local retail stores and cafes. Passengers also received an I love Portland wristband souvenir of their visit to act as a further marketing tool of the region. Passengers booked a range of local tours including exploring cultural heritage sites with Worn Gundidj, cruises on the Glenelg River with visits to the Princes Margaret Rose Caves, Seals by the Sea tours at Cape Bridgewater, horticulture excursions at Treloar Roses and Narrawong’s Timandra by the Sea.

LOCAL

Local X Factor success continues Mount Gambier’s Louise Adams captured the imagination of this community, and, in turn, the entire country, with her stellar performances on last year’s X Factor, that saw her finish runner-up and earn a recording contact with Sony Music. Her debut album, which includes her single History, as well as a selection of her favourite X Factor live show performances,

was released just prior to Christmas and not long after its December 15 release, Louise was able to personally thank at least one of her loyal fans - Isabella Bruttomesso. The 14 year old teenager cannot remember how many times she fired off a text message to vote for her X Factor favourite but it literally took only one of her messages to see Isabella emerge

a winner - of a new car. Despite not being old enough to drive, she is now the proud owner of a top of the range Holden Trax LTZ, with turbo charged 1.4litre engine and automatic transmission. Isabella, who was also front row for Louise’s packed Mount Gambier concert in the Cave Gardens, was not even aware she was in the running for a prize. And given how many times she ignored the calls to her phone, perhaps she is lucky to have ended up with the brand new Holden. Her father John assumed the Sydney number was a telemarketing call but the persistent caller eventually earned an answer, from Isabella’s father, who took some time to actually comprehend his 14 year old was the proud owner of a new Holden. Her mother Kylie Braim is set to be the lucky

recipient of the Holden Trax - she was basically due for a new car anyway. Louise was able to personally present the car at OG Roberts & Co on December 23, throwing in an autographed CD for good measure.

Left - Mount Gambier’s Isabella Bruttomesso with the Holden Trax LTZ she won as part of Channel 7’s X Factor. COLLECTED STUPIDITY Christmas craziness... by Robbie Tansel I’ve got a little Christmas hint for you all. I know it’s a little late now as we’ve just gotten through Christmas but hopefully it might come in hand in the coming years. Here it is. On Christmas Day only make plans for Christmas lunch. I don’t make any plans for Christmas tea for one simple reason. It’s very possible, or even likely, that I might be in a holding cell or answering questions from one of our wonderful police officers following assaulting a family member. If things have gotten particularly out of control I may even be on the run seeking a safe house after murdering someone. I am exaggerating a little but I think we all reach that time on Christmas Day where these kinds of thoughts cross our minds. The truth of the matter is that I came up with this Christmas hint after I went through it one Christmas Day not that long ago. Here’s what happened. My Grandpa Brookes has got Facebook. He really shouldn’t have Facebook because he generally doesn’t know how to use it. The one thing he does have a very good grasp of on Facebook is sharing other people’s bigoted, racist, anti-Muslim posts. You can guarantee that if someone is sharing posts about wanting to change Australia Day to National Pride Day and it’s all the Muslims’ fault, Grandpa will share it. I think he should concentrate more on wearing pants. The amount of times I visit and it’s Pants Free Friday is ridiculous. There are only fifty two Fridays in a year and they happen on

Friday, Grandpa! On this occasion the argument at the Christmas dinner table didn’t centre on his racist views or his lack of pants. Grandpa had shared a post on Facebook reminding people that there are double demerit points for traffic infractions over the Christmas/New Year period. I told him that it was a ridiculous thing to share. The fact that someone will get twice as many demerit points for driving inappropriately makes no difference to the choices someone will make as they drive their vehicle. They’re either the sort of person who follows road rules or the person who thinks they can do what they want. I think it’s pretty much the same as when your mum tells you to drive carefully before you drive somewhere. “Luckily you reminded me to drive carefully, Mum, because until you said that I fully intended to see if I could get my car on two wheels while blindfolded. Your helpful reminder has convinced me that this would not be a good idea.” I’ve done extensive research on this one and there is no difference between the percentage of accidents of people who have or have not been told to drive carefully by their mother before embarking on the trip. Things continued to escalate as I said, “Grandpa, no one who is speeding thinks they’re going to get caught so they’re definitely not thinking about how their penalty will be doubled.” At this point he made the very mature decision to start throwing dozens of the plastic toys out of the Christmas

crackers at me, which he had somehow managed to accumulate throughout the meal. We worked out later that he’d been involved in popping every one of the Christmas crackers which he claimed was his attempt at achieving a Guiness World Record. After popping the crackers he was claiming the prize and leaving us with the dodgey jokes. Anyway, I don’t believe in hitting people…but every now and then Grandpa needs a good shake. “What are you thinking, you silly old bugger?!” Little did I know that he had applied inadequate adhesive to his false teeth and as I shook him they flew out, shattering on the ground. He immediately called the police and the next thing you know I’m answering questions from some police that were just doing their job. I’ve always thought it must be tough having to work on Christmas but as I sat there I thought, these guys don’t have to put up with annoying family members. Anyway, no charges were laid because they spoke to Grandpa as well and I think they understood where I was coming from. I reckon he was lucky they didn’t shoot him themselves, or at least give him a few taps with their batons. How rude did I look when I didn’t show for Christmas tea after being stuck at the station answering their questions? I’ve never made that mistake again. If you have a Christmas hint, possibly related to how to cope with crazy family members, or good places to hide bodies, e-mail me at robbietansel@gmail.com

PET OF THE WEEK Can you give Tiger a new home for the New Year? Tiger is a one-year-old Australian Kelpie, who is desperate to be part of a loving and nurturing family of her very own. This sweet-natured and affectionate young girl is happiest being wherever her human friends are and gets on well with other dogs. Like all Australian Kelpies, Tiger is intelligent, loyal and high energy and will need an owner willing to commit to regular exercise. Tiger can become boisterous when given attention, however she is currently learning her basic commands and further obedience training will help Tiger reach her full potential. Tiger’s adoption price also includes an $80 adoption pack to settle this beautiful dog into her new home. If you think you can give Tiger a second chance at a safe and loving home, contact the SEAWL on (08)8723 9133 during opening hours or visit www.seawl.thelimestonecoast. com.au for more information about the adoption process.

CEO RENEWS CONTRACT Mount Gambier Mayor Andrew Lee has confirmed that CEO Mark McShane has signed a new five year deal, allowing the respected administrator to build on the first four years of his work in this region for the City of Mount Gambier. The Mount Gambier City Council unanimously endorsed the offer of a new contract term late last year, providing continuity of administrative leadership and the effective delivery of council outcomes for the next five years. Mr McShane’s initial four year term has witnessed the completion by council of a number of major infrastructure projects that have been in the planning stage for many years, including the transformation of the former hospital site, creation of the rail lands and ongoing CBD renewal. In close partnership with staff, councillors and other key stakeholders and community groups, Mr McShane has also worked on the establishment of the James Morrison Academy of Music, delivered balanced and sustainable budgets, encouraged stronger and more diverse community engagement, established a long term solution for the Riddoch Art Gallery, implemented long term strategic and financial planning and supported a range of programs assisting community well being, such as the Men’s Shed and a diverse range of community events and functions. “There are of course no shortage of challenges and projects in the foreseeable future,” Mr Lee said. “I, along with councillors and staff, look forward to Mark’s continuing quality leadership, advocacy and enthusiasm in delivering excellent outcomes for our city.”

LOCAL Colourful fundraiser returns

April 3 will see the Mount Gambier Showgrounds explode with colour again as the team behind the Mount Gambier Colour Day bring another colourful event to the area. The 2015 event saw more than 900 people run and walk through showers of coloured holi powder and assist in fundraising $20,000 for local and international not for profit groups. PLAIN-SPEAKING JANE • JANE CARO ‘At some point, I gave up trying to play it safe. I stopped trying to control the uncontrollable.’ Jane Caro is known for saying what she thinks across the news and entertainment media. In an era where public figures talk about themselves as brands, and manage every moment accordingly, this is not just refreshing, it’s, well, radical. lifestyle1.net | 28 edit - colour day.indd 1

LOCAL Local scouts head to national jamboree Earlier this month, eight Scouts and a leader from 1st Mount Gambier Scout Group headed to Cataract Park, a 160 hectares Scout campsite located 30 minutes from Wollongong beaches and water activities on Lake Illawarra and just 50 minutes south of Sydney, near Appin, to join more than 10,000 other Scouts plus 2500 leaders from around Australia and 20 other countries for an action packed 10 days. Throughout the Jamboree they are living in tents in troops of 36, working in patrols of eight, attending activities both on and off site, and includes doing their own cooking and washing. The 160 hectares site has been transformed into a city with an onsite hospital, fire station, police station, radio station, newspaper, bus terminal, huge food storage facilities, portable showers and toilet blocks, food halls for volunteer activity workers, basically anything you would find in a normal community. Tarpeena Family Market to return in February The Tarpeena Family Market is set to reopen on Sunday, February 7, between 10am-2pm. Tarpeena Family Market supports Ronald McDonald House Adelaide, with 20% of stall fees donated, plus the donation tins situated near the huge model railway layout. The market is also very grateful to have SE Battery Service as its major sponsor. They have donated the raffle prizes and stock to sell for RMHA over the past two years. Thanks to the sponsors, the market was able to send RMHA a cheque for $1604.55 at Christmas; bringing the total raised over the past eight years to just under $16,000. Organisers are excited to announce the market will open with a whole new concept - a community stall. This enables stallholders who have amazing products, but are very short on time; to have their goods presented in a professional and caring way. The stall will be constantly supervised by market staff and they are looking forward to adding a large number of new stalls and products in 2016. The market also has a slot car racing layout which you can race on for a donation to the Tarpeena CFS. All enquiries to Libby Eykelenburg on 0417 803 066 or libbyeykelenburg@hotmail.com

LOCAL PORTLAND LIBRARY EXPERIMENTS WITH POP UP CONCEPT Sit back on the Portland foreshore and enjoy a good book these summer holidays in the region’s first pop-up library. The Committee for Portland and United Way Glenelg have teamed with Glenelg Libraries to refurbish an old shipping container into a makeshift library, stocked with great books for all ages with comfortable chairs and beanbags for readers to relax. The concept library, which is based on Lee Breakwater Road near the naval cadets building, will be open to the public every Saturday in January from 1pm to 5pm. The Committee for Portland led initiative is the next project in its Revitalise Portland campaign. The committee’s executive officer Anita Rank, who is also a Glenelg Shire Councillor, said the literacy based engagement program was part of a global trend of libraries taking their services outside the realms of a traditional library space, to further promote reading and learning. “Pop-ups appear as something which is spontaneous, vibrant, innovative and unexpected; this library will add colour and fun to the foreshore this summer,” she said. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the pop-up library was recreating the library experience by taking the books and services to the people. “The public are invited to grab a book and relax on our beautiful foreshore, enjoying this great concept which is redefining the library experience,” Cr Oberlander said.

There’s one thing for sure – Mount Gambier and the Riddoch Art Gallery have never seen an exhibition like this before – and only the rich imagination of Mount Gambier artist Gina Raisin could have dreamt up. The Amazing Adventures of Doctor Mayhem and The Chonga Barz is as surprising and eclectic as it sounds as quiet, unassuming acrylic and oil painter Matt Sheehy, who is steeped in a world of fantasy, teams with emerging aerosol artist, Anthony Hamilton, responsible for some of the striking murals in Mount Gambier, to forge a new exhibition which opens on January 30. Having enjoyed a successful solo exhibition on her own in the premier regional art space, Gina decided to curate this ambitious project, teaming her long time friend of 20 years, Anthony, with newly arrived in Mount Gambier artist Matt, whose work she admires greatly. “A lot of artists are not good at promoting themselves,” Gina said. “I am hoping a whole new audience will discover the work of Matt Sheehy and Anthony Hamilton and it might kick start something the way my solo exhibition in 2014 really helped me.” Matt describes his detailed creations as “organic abstract” and there is no doubt they are thought provoking. “I’ve been expressing myself creatively since I was a little kid,” he said. “It was my way of making sense if the world and reacting to what’s happening in it.” For Matt, art has long been a full time career, while for Carter Holt Harvey mill worker Anthony, it is a simmering passion that he is now concentrating on whenever time allows. “I’ve been dabbling for 20 years,” he said. “Working and not having a lot of time is why I got into street art, it suited my time frame – it’s a quick medium. Painting murals with a brush is a lot more detailed and takes a lot longer, but going down the aerosol path was quicker and easier.” The two artists met for the first time in June 2015 as Gina started to formulate her vision and on Janauary 30, barely six months later, the Margaret Scott Gallery at the Riddoch, will host The Amazing Adventures of Doctor Mayhem and The Chonga Barz – the thought provoking, challenging and intricate work of Matt juxtaposed with the large scale, humour injected work of Anthony. Matt has exhibited extensively before despite this being his Riddoch Art Gallery debut, while for Anthony this is a new experience. “It will be interesting to see how people, that aren’t my family and friends, react,” Anthony said. Gina, as curator, is also waiting with bated breath. “I’ve had a relationship with the Riddoch for 30 years and in my time it’s never seen anything like this exhibition,” she said. The exhibition open on January 30 with an opening celebration at 4pm and runs until March 27. PHOTOS BY FRANK MONGER

As reported on page 4 in this edition of Lifestyle1 - the burgeoning cruise ship trade in Portland has begun for 2016 with the visit last week of the Pacific Jewel. Here is what some of the local traders had to say about what looms as a vital industry for the seaside town. “It is one of the biggest days we have ever had. It was extremely positive; I have never seen our street busier. I spent about two hours at the front of our store with a microphone welcoming the visitors - it was the best cruise ship so far.” Bruce Elijah, Sportspower. “It was a fantastic atmosphere. The people were friendly and the business was good. I would love to see 10 cruise ships a year. I think passengers love Portland.” – Pauline Stanley – Pauline’s Ab Fab “I couldn’t believe how busy the street was. I couldn’t drive down Bentinck Street because it was so busy. You were struggling to get a park all day. It was a very good day for us.” – Leanne Smith, Smith Showcase Jewellers. “It was certainly one of the busiest days we have had since opening.” - Ed Fricker, Fast Eddies Café. “It was the best cruise ship trade we have had. It was definitely a brilliant day for us and the most cruise ship passengers I have seen around town before. ” – Briony Peters, Welcome Home Giftware. “This is so good for a small town; we were very busy. They were not only cruise ship passengers, but people that came to town to look at the cruise ship.” - Sally Stenton, Duck Inn Café. “We received lots of feedback on how nice Portland looks and how affordable the real estate was. Over 200 brochures were handed out to people with lots promising to come back and check out properties in the future. We can’t wait for the next cruise ship to arrive.” – Allan Barrett, Seaview Real Estate.

The Autofest concept originated 23 years ago in Shepparton, Victoria, growing quickly in popularity year by year which now sees similar events in major cities within Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. The festivities promote community and business side by side to celebrate motoring enthusiasts, motoring fans and their passions. Throughout the year, events are held that celebrate cultural diversity, sporting prowess, world-class driving, the great outdoors, kids of all ages and our heritage of motorsport. Festival events cross a wide variety of skilled driving skills, trader information booths and motoring displays are just the tip of an iceberg of great fun and community celebrations. Other current venues visited include Mount Panorama, Bathurst NSW, Shepparton Vic, Murray Bridge SA, Tatura Vic and Wagga NSW. Autofest is a car festival especially for modified cars, but restored and original cars, bike, utes and trucks are also welcome and catered for.
