COVER

Roll up...roll up...it’s that time of the year again... The Mount Gambier Show is the largest in South Australia outside of the Royal Adelaide Show and this year, it will again blend some exciting new features with time honoured favourites to bring together this amazing celebration of rural life and family fun. Major sponsor Gambier Earth Movers are again on board, with a hard working band of volunteers also ensuring the show does go on. “These unsung heroes do a wonderful job all year but especially in the weeks leading up to the show, putting life and family on hold to ensure the show does go on,” show PR coordinator Julianne Woodruff said “More enthusiastic

Phone

volunteers are always welcomed with open arms and anyone with an interest in any section of the show is encouraged to become a part of this great community institution.” 2015 show tickets also include a $5 voucher redeemable from Banner Mitre 10 Mount Gambier with the show also always looking for new sponsors to take up one of their variety of sponsorship packages. Much of the 2015 program is about stepping back in time with some renovated traction engines set to be centre stage. The Cowley and the Vasey Lady (pictured) headline those traction engines, which will also be part of a parade that will head down Commercial Street ahead of the Mount Gambier Show. When you add to that, the usual show hall displays and competitions, including cookery, flowers and arts and crafts, as well as the livestock exhibits and equestrian events, the 2015 Mount Gambier Show is all about honouring the origins of country shows everywhere. There will be the usual showbags on offer, as well as all the fun of sideshow alley with the most popular rides and fairground arcade games to test your skill. Country shows are also never light on for food – from the sugary sweetness of hot donuts and fairyfloss to the home baked goodness of our best country cooks, as well as plenty of local produce on offer from gourmet producers. The Mount Gambier Show has always had a strong focus on family fun

and entertainment and the 2015 program is no different with free face painting, Cool For Kids entertainment and a Funky Flicks photo booth. The Ag Learning Centre, with its cute baby animals is always hugely popular with most kids not just enjoying a school visit but dragging mum and dad back for a second look over the weekend. The Blue Lake Trail is also on for the kids – giving them a chance to pick up a free showbag from the arts and crafts hall and then moving to around nine different stalls for free giveaways to add to their bag. From

woodchopping to highland dancing, from spinning and weaving to yard dog displays, from motorbike stunts to rock’n’roll jiving, there really is something for everyone at the 2015 Mount Gambier Show. There will also be a grand parade held on each day in the main arena. The 2015 event is on October 23 & 24.

AT THE CINEMA THE MARTIAN - NOW SHOWING During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

LOCAL Leukaemia Foundation opens local office At te end of last month. Mount Gambier became home to the second regional Leukaemia Foundation office in South Australia, servicing the entire Limestone Coast. The gala opening event was last Wednesday, as Mount Gambier joined Port Lincoln as only two regional offices in the State. “What they want to achieve is bridging the gap between regional and city services by offering regional patients and their families free resources and support,” community relationships coordinator Sam Rothall said. For Sam, the chance to head up the Mount Gambier office was the perfect fit. “I was looking for a new challenge and a friend emailed me about the job while I was away on holiday and I

was lucky enough to get it,” she said. Sam is no stranger to working with cancer based charities and support services, having been front and centre of many breast cancer events and projects in this region. She is looking forward to giving Limestone Coast patients the support they need right on their doorstep. “It is just to help lessen the burden,” Sam said. She will certainly be hitting the ground running with Light The Night, one of the Leukaemia Foundation’s major fundraising and awareness campaigns only a month away on October 30 in Mount Gambier’s Cave Gardens. “Part of my role is to coordinate all those national campaigns at a local level,” she said. The office will initially open three days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. “I will be able to point people in the right direction for support services, the medical side of things and other services as well,” Sam said. In 2013 the Leukaemia Foundation opened its Northfield facility with 15 fully furnished apartments for regional patients and Sam can certainly connect local patients with that facility. “Blood cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Australia and has the longest treatment – it can be up to eight months at a time,” she said. “The Leukaemia Foundation is a family oriented foundation and is about making sure patients realise they are not alone.” The Mount Gambier office is at 3B Mitchell Street, Mount Gambier or call (08)8724 9245.

LOCAL Jess needs a home

The South East Animal Welfare League team has launched a ‘Find Jess a Home’ campaign, to help find two-year-old English Staffordshire cross, Jess, a happy and safe forever home. Through no fault of her own, gorgeous Jess found herself in the care of the SEAWL in May. So far, Jess has spent 142 days with the league - that’s almost five months. As far as the SEAWL team is concerned, that’s 142 days too long. “Jess has been with us for five months, and not because she has been overlooked or rejected, but because she has yet to find the right home for her,” SEAWL Committee President Anneliese Bates said. Jess is a happy-go-lucky, sweet and loving young girl. Like all English Staffordshire’s, Jess has

a big personality and is in her element when sitting on your lap receiving all your love and attention. At just over 16kg, Jess is a small dog, but will need an owner willing to undertake basic obedience training to help her reach her full potential. “Jess truly is a wonderful dog, and after all she has been through, she deserves to find a wonderful forever home,” Ms Bates said. To help her find her forever home, the SEAWL has reduced Jess’ adoption price from $320 to $200. This includes desexing, microchipping, the parvovirus and C5 vaccination, worm and flea treatment, vet health check and behaviour assessment. COLLECTED STUPIDITY Don’t know what you’ve got ‘til its gone.. by Robbie Tansel Sincerity is not normally something you associate with my weekly article. My speciality is sarcasm, facetiousness and irony. I’m not even sure if facetiousness is a word, and I have about as much understanding of irony as Alanis Morrisette but I’m pretty sure that’s essentially what I do. But if I can be serious for a minute, and I think I probably can, then I’ll probably stray into a little bit of sincerity and heartfelt honesty this week if you’ll indulge me. My partner Donna spent almost a week out of the country last week attending a family wedding. We couldn’t afford for the whole family to attend which meant that our son Shaquille and I were left to fend for ourselves. Now I’m a big boy so it’s not the end of the world; I can look after myself. But throw a threenager into the mix and that may well be a different story. You certainly don’t appreciate someone until they’re gone though. It would be easy now to talk about the fact there was no one to cook or clean up. That would be sexist, childish and not even that funny. Again, some of the main things I achieve in my article each week. Mount Gambier does have a wide variety of takeaway food options to enjoy though and I also took the opportunity to stock the cupboards with all the food options Donna doesn’t normally allow me to enjoy. We snacked like kings on chicken chips, chocolatey treats and chocolate mousse. Now that might

not sound like we missed Donna but we really did. Being in a relationship is a real partnership and I missed that partnership. I’d like to give you an example of this partnership in action. Donna likes to walk around the house giving loud, angry orders like she’s some sort of military general. Pick that up! Stop doing that! Why is that still sitting there?! My job is to try and get whatever it is done with a smile and a nod before Donna starts throwing crockery at me. See? Partnership. What would be the point of giving those orders if I wasn’t there to do as I was told? One area where I really missed Donna was in wrangling the wild three year old. Managing Shaquille is not really something that someone should attempt by themselves. It’s a lot like trying to catch a crocodile. ou need one person to jump on its back and one to tie the ropes around its mouth and legs. Just like you would with a crocodile. Shaq got up to more than his normal amount of mischief with me supervising him one on one. The shower seemed to be the venue where he reserved his best shenanigans. One night I left him in the shower while I went to take care of some job around the house. When I came back there was a bit of an unusual wet patch on the floor. Not that type of wet patch. When I looked in the shower I noticed a shampoo bottle that hadn’t previously been in there. Shaquille had gotten out of the shower, got

the shampoo out of the cupboard and then emptied it down the drain. The next night I once again made the mistake of walking away from the shower with the little monster in there. Again I came back with similar unusual wet patches on the floor. I was relieved to find there was no further hair products that had been poured down the drain and, having found nothing obvious, thought nothing of it. About an hour or two later when I returned to the bathroom to brush his teeth, I noticed an unpleasant smell. When I looked into the bathtub, I found a little bum nugget sitting there. Shaq had obviously done a poo in the shower, picked it up, left the shower and then put it in the bath. As you do. I’m not exactly sure what the thinking was. “Oh no. I’ve done a poo in the shower. That’s disgusting. I’ll pick it up in my bare hand and take it to the bath because that will be much less objectionable.” I’ve got a feeling it was probably more like, “Crap. I’m gonna be in so much trouble. I better hide that!” Anyway, the point was I missed Donna. If you’d like to help me understand what facetiousness, irony or possibly sincerity mean, email me at robbietansel@gmail. com

LOCAL Kurralea sizzles to spectacular result by Ian Turner It is hard to imagine there could be a stronger sale result than the Kurralea Poll Dorset and White Suffolk studs experienced last year when 312 rams averaged $1454, but that is exactly what happened at the recent 2015 annual Kurralea ram sale at Ariah Park. For the Prentice family, it was a perfect tonic after such a challenging year from a personal health perspective. Even though they offered 44 more rams to give wider selection choices, the combination of a buoyant lamb industry and a terrific season in this region of NSW created even stronger demand than anticipated. They offered 356 stud and flock rams and in a total clearance, these sold to buyers from three states at an amazing average of $1785, grossing $635,600. There was a bigger crowd than for the previous few years with 71 registered bidders and under the auctioneering of Michael Glasser, Glasser Total Sale Management and Elders’ Joe Wilks, competition was strong throughout, but particularly on the large drafts of flock rams. Reflecting the season, the rams were presented in wonderful working condition, enabling them to reflect their high Lambplan performance figures. In comparison with last year the stud drafts were solid rather than spectacular. The sale commenced with the 29 Poll Dorset stud rams, several of these having had showing success at the recent Adelaide and Melbourne Royal Shows. Wallace and

Sue Binnie, Coledale stud, Devenish, Victoria opened the buying with a successful $7000 bid to secure K140740, a very classy August drop Poll Dorset ram, sired by K130228 and having top performance figures culminating in a Carcase Plus index of 203. Philip Wardle, Eldra Pastoral Co, Naracoorte, SA and a Kurralea regular buyer grabbed a bargain on the next ram, K140696 at just $2500, before Grant and Bryce Hausler, Janmac stud, Goroke, Victoria, made it a hat trick of rams going south of the NSW border. They bid what was ultimately the sale’s second top price of $9000 to pick up K140412, a beautifully balanced 142kg son of K130153, this ram having been a class winner in Melbourne. It was not until lot 25 that this price was surpassed. Garry Armstrong, Armdale and Armdale Park studs, Marrar combined forces with Andrew and Donna Scott, Valley Vista stud, Coolac to win a strong bidding duel with the Binnie family to secure Kurralea 140521twin for $11,000. Sired by K090684, this ram displayed outstanding balance, muscling and sire power, backed up by good performance figures highlighted by an eye muscle depth EBV of 1.6 and a Carcase Plus index of 183. WR & MM Honner, through Elders Wagga purchased two rams from this draft at $4500 and $3000 as did Ian Sandilands, through Elders Shepparton ($2750 and $5500) and D & M Younger through Landmark

Narrandera ($2500 and $2750). Astute flock ram clients jumped in to pick up the slack from stud buyers, with three purchasing a total of 10 of these, paying from $2000 to $3000. The 29 rams in this draft averaged $3491. Although the top was down $7000 on last year, because of the stronger middle ground buying the average for the entire draft was up $106. The White Suffolk stud ram draft lacked the number of standout rams from last year when they sold to $12,000, but like most of the Poll Dorsets, demand was solid for what was still a very good line. Brought forward to start the run was K140562, the reserve champion from the Melbourne Royal. Sired by DG110522, this 117kg August drop youngster sold for just $4000 with Graham and Carmel Wilson, Kismet stud, Howlong being the recipients of this great value. They later added another at $2500 to add to their earlier $3500 Poll Dorset stud ram purchase. Top price honours in this draft went to Robert Hage, West Wyalong who bid $4250 for K140095, a big, long and 157 kg son of K120186. Tim and Marianne Ferguson, Mallee Park stud, Hopeton, Victoria picked up one at $3000, adding to the $3000 Poll Dorset ram purchased earlier to also be multiple breed stud ram purchasers. Again, flock ram buyers did not hesitate to grab rams the stud buyers missed. The 16 rams in this draft averaged $2309, down on last

year’s $3838 average. That was the only decline in price from last year as the flock ram drafts sizzled, such was the strength of competition. The power and buying numbers required by two buying accounts was the big driver of this demand. This was headed by Australian Food & Ag, formally FS Falkiner & Sons Pty Ltd, buying through Elders Deniliquin who have been major purchasers at Kurralea for many years, this year being no exception. Justin Campbell, Boonoke and David Marshall, Burrabogee did the bidding this year to purchase a total of 123 superb quality rams, 56 from the Poll Dorsets and 67 from the White Suffolks. They paid from $1400 to $1750, putting a very strong floor in the sale. Knowing the breeding quality and performance of these Kurralea genetics another major agricultural

organisation attended to purchase 70 rams; 14 Poll Dorsets and 56 White Suffolks paying from $1400 to $1700. However, these two buying accounts did not have it all their own way. Matt Dart, DB Ag, Ariah Park was back again to bid strongly, purchasing 16 rams from $1500 to $1800, picking up eight from each breed. BFB Pty Ltd, Temora paid from $1600 to $1700 to purchase their 16 pick Poll Dorsets. Springbank Unit Trust and buying through J Keady & Co, Cowra paid the top of $2100 in the Poll Dorset flock ram draft while purchasing six of the best at an average of $1850. Also strong on the Poll Dorsets was CW Mattiske & Co, through RCA Wagga, who purchased 11 to $2000 from this line, plus three from the stud draft to $2500; their total of 14 rams averaging $1986.

LOCAL Incredible result at Allendale/Days by Ian Turner “What an incredible result,” was a statement made by many after the combined Allendale Suffolk and Poll Dorset studs and the Days Whiteface White Suffolk and Maternal Composite studs’ sheep sale at Bordertown earlier this month. 434 head of stud ewes and stud and flock rams were offered by the Day families at their 43rd annual sheep sale and after five and a half hours of selling by auctioneers Gordon Wood, Landmark, Ross Milne, Elders and Jono Spence, Spence, Dix & Co, a 95% clearance was achieved, producing a sale average of $1464 and gross of $603,100, up nearly $200,000 on the previous year. Along the way there were records broken, despite the apprehension about the seasonal conditions in the upper south east for the second year in a row. Alastair and Jayne Day, Allendale studs offered and sold 105 head of Suffolks and 117 head of Poll Dorsets, while sale hosts, Lachy and Lou Day, Days Whiteface sold 166 head of White Suffolks and 23 Maternal Composites. The presentation of all the sheep on offer could only be described as exceptional and a credit to the principals and their families and staff. Many major successes at the recent Adelaide and Melbourne Royals gave extra credence to the quality on offer. The big crowd that included 134 registered bidders from four states certainly appreciated that quality and bid up strongly. The individual highlight of the day was the setting of a new Australian auction record for a stud Suffolk ram when Allendale sold A141565 for $13,500 to the Bascomb family, White Flat stud Pt Lincoln, buying through Elders Cummins agent Paul Kilby. They were also the purchasers of last year’s top at $8750. This impressive ram was sired by A121070 and was champion ram at the recent Melbourne Royal, a fitting reward for the Day family in the 80th year of showing Suffolks. “For us, the standout dot point factors in our buying decision on this ram were his length and muscling. He is so well balanced and has performance on board in both the show ring and through objective measurement and will supplement what we have already established in our 80 ewe flock,” David Bascomb said. The Bascomb family also invested in the Suffolk stud ewes on offer, purchasing five from $400 to $900. Another A121070 son, A141486 was champion at Adelaide Royal this year, this ram also heading to Eyre Peninsula to Don Millard and family, She-Oak Lodge stud, Mt Hope for $5000. Buying through Peter Hill, EP Livestock, Don made a very strong genetic investment as he also purchased A141478Tw for $4500 and a Mornish 120018 NZ son, A141424 for $8500, then later adding a White Suffolk for $4000. Kent and Rose Martin, Chickerloo stud, Kalangadoo have been Allendale supporters for decades and again invested in a top ram. Combining with Claire Davey, Lanacoona stud, Wrattonbully they purchased the first Suffolk stud ram offered, A 141439,

another Mornish 120018 NZ son for the $9500 second top price in this section. In an exceptionally strong run, the 16 Suffolk stud rams averaged $5421, up $1705 on last year. The 44 Suffolk stud ewes also met strong demand with all clearing to a top of $1100 and averaging $642, up $106 on last year. Kerry Graham and Malcolm Schaefer, Skallemaro stud, Kangaroo Island were again strong buyers, selecting six of the very best including two at the top price and averaging $967. Josh Wiltshire and Sam Edwards, Imperial Partners, Hahndorf also paid to the $1100 top in purchasing three ewes, adding to a $5000 stud ram purchase. The volume buyers in the ewe draft were MG & TM Smith, Lucindale with eight ewes to $450, having also purchased a $3000 stud ram, and Adam Bradley, SAL Keith, buying for GB & EJ Lewis, Strathmerton, Vic, picking up seven ewes from $500 to $950. The Suffolk flock ram draft of 45 rams also sold like hot cakes, indicating the breed is regaining much of its commercial popularity now that the lamb industry has matured into buying lambs on quality rather than finding fictitious reasons to discount as was the case late last century. The 45 rams topped at $2200 and averaged $1374, the highest flock ram average of the four breed combined sale and up $282 on last year’s result. The Hann family, Nampara Pastoral Co, Penola has been a strong advocate for Suffolks for a long time, with Martin Hann purchasing six of the best from $1400 to $2000. RF Verner, through Spence, Dix & Co was the biggest volume buyer with 12 Suffolk flock rams, paying from $1000 to $1400. David Brown, through PPH&S Naracoorte was strong at the top end with five from $1400 to $1700, later adding three top Days White Suffolks, also to $1700. Kangaringa Station, buying though Landmark Keith’s Noel Evans was the biggest volume flock ram buyer in the whole sale, including eight from this Suffolk run from $1200 to $1800, later adding 14 Days White Suffolks from $1200 to $1700. Last year the Days White Suffolk flock ram line achieved a near total clearance but at reduced prices. This year the quality of these rams was appreciated much more, with all 128 selling at a fantastic $1302 average; up $520 or 66% on last year. These sold to a $2100 top paid twice by Denholm Green Pastoral Co, Hexham and buying through Lanyons Hamilton. They purchased nine rams at a top average of $1833. Tarra Park Partnership, buying through Landmark Warrnambool paid to $2000 and at a $1780 average in purchasing five rams, while Dunira Prime Lamb through Spence, Dix & Co also went to $2000 in purchasing three top rams. Dunira purchased 16 rams overall from the three main terminal sire breeds. Kangaringa’s 14 White Suffolks made them the biggest volume buyers in this sale section, but it was the depth of competition that ensured prices matched quality right through the draft. Thirty six individual buying accounts

purchased from one to 14 rams with 12 buyers purchasing from four to six rams. Lachy and Lou Day and family’s White Suffolk stud offerings also met improved competition from last year. In the stud ram section, Days 140003, sired by D120284 set the ball rolling when selling for the top of $13,000. The winning bidder was Leigh Richards, Tongara stud, Coonalpyn, buying through Elders Coonalpyn. “We were seeking a ram with structural correctness and especially good shoulders for our program. This ram is so balanced and correct with very good stretch and is supported by more than adequate figures,” Leigh said in explaining his buying decision. Those figures were highlighted by a Pemd of 1.4 and a C+ index of 182.5. Manton Farming, through Landmark Pingelly, WA were underbidders but then picked up the next two White Suffolk stud rams at $3000 and $4000, adding to their 15 White Suffolk stud ewe purchases, paying from $500 to $700 to be the biggest volume buyer of stud rams and stud ewes in the White Suffolk section of the sale. Craig Hicks, through Landmark Strathalbyn paid the $5000 second top price for White Suffolk stud rams, purchasing D140421Tw, an impressive and well balanced ram late in the draft. The McDonald family, Blackwood Park, Strathalbyn regularly compete on the Days stud rams for their commercial program and did so again, being successful on four, paying from $2250 to $2750. The 14 White Suffolk stud rams averaged $3981, up $1884 on last year, while 24 of the 28 White Suffolk ewes found new homes from $400 to $700 and at a $575 average, up $155 on last year. Days Whiteface also offered a line of 42 Maternal Composites that Lachy Day has been developing for several years. Gone is the wide variance in type as several breeds are blended for their maternal strengths, wool and carcase attributes, but buyers are still coming to terms with this very interesting breeding option. Twenty three cleared at a $917 average, up just $6 on last year. Geoff Agnew, farm manager for the Baker Group, Furner and buying through Elders Naracoorte’s Tom Dennis appreciated their potential, purchasing 14, including five at the $1200 top price for this line. The Allendale Poll Dorset offering was also well up on last year’s result in all three sectors. Only eight ewes were offered, these all going at $400 each to Tony Mackereth, Padthaway and buying through PPH&S Naracoorte. The stud ram line of 12 outstanding rams was strongly supported, topping at $11,000 and averaging $4313, up 71% on last year’s $2520 average. Leading off was an absolute powerhouse sire in every sense. A140177 was sired by Allendale Legend, the supreme all breeds champion ram from Adelaide and Melbourne last year. Besides his exceptional phenotype he was supported by top balanced Lambplan figures culminating in a C+ index of 190.9. Ian Kyle, Ashley Park stud, Bairnsdale

and buying through Sharpe Fullgrave Livestock, Bairnsdale won the bidding at $11,000. He explained that rams like this one don’t become available too often and having seen him in Adelaide and Melbourne was convinced he’d give a big boost to his Poll Dorset breeding program. Mary Burzacott and Michael Emery, Mulgundawa Poll Dorset stud, Robe and buying through Landmark Kingston went to the $7000 second top price for A140286, a well-balanced and sirey ram that was the junior champion Poll Dorset ram at both the Adelaide and Melbourne Royal shows. The Koch family, Tallegera Pastoral, Frances and buying though Landmark Naracoorte paid $5000 for A140065, while VJ&NT Mawbey, through Elders Dubbo paid $5250 and $4000 for two very good sons of Derrynock 110131, a sire working very well at Allendale. A 30% increase in average price from $898 last year up to $1166 this year for the 97 Poll Dorset flock rams was also a big contribution to the overall sale lift. These sold to a top of $1700 paid by the Malone family, Talinga & Co, Naracoorte for one of the two top rams they purchased. Brain Johnson, LS Johnson & Son and buying through Elders Naracoorte was the biggest volume buyer, purchasing a total of 16 Poll Dorset flock rams from $700 to $1500 and averaging $1275. Steve DiGiorgio, S&R DiGiorgio and buying through PPH&S Naracoorte purchased 11 rams from this draft plus two from the stud line, his 13 rams averaging $1423. Dunira Prime Lamb, through Spence, Dix & Co, Strathdownie buying through Elders Mt Gambier

purchased six, all at $1500 to make a buying impact, while K&M Diprose, Romsey, Vic, TE&PF Tranter, through TDC Penola and RG Hillier, through Landmark Bordertown all purchased five rams to be prominent buyers.

Library to boost programs After an overwhelming response to their opening week of Saturday trading, Casterton Library is now looking to introduce an activities program to keep the community entertained. But your help is needed, with volunteers required to make the Saturday series a success. One of the proposed activities involves the volunteer reading to children for up to an hour, while overseeing a supplied craft or colour-in activity. It’s hoped that this would be coordinated by a volunteer, either every Saturday or every second Saturday, with more than one person able to be involved at each session. The second idea utilises the skills of students in Years 10 to 12, who it’s hoped will provide a ‘Tech Help’ service, assisting people with simple smart phones or devices, or computing issues. Mayor Robert Halliday said he expected the Casterton community would get behind these Saturday initiatives. “I think this service provides a really good opportunity for our seniors to interact with the younger people in our community each week,” he said. “Students will also be able to use the program to meet their community service curriculum obligations.” Between 150 and 200 people walked through the Casterton Library doors on ‘grand final’ Saturday, with the Casterton Lions Club selling 100 snags during the morning. The Library has been fitted with new display shelving and ‘groovy’ seating to provide an attractive environment for visitors each week. Interested people can collect a Volunteer Registration pack from the Casterton Customer Service Centre and Library or contact Library Manager Yvette Parker (03) 55 222380 for more details.

Kurralea sizzles to spectacular result from page 28 Similarly Poinsete Pty Ltd, buying through Landmark Wagga purchased nine rams from both Poll Dorset drafts, paying to $2000 and averaging $1811. Greg Moncrieff, Greg Moncrieff Agencies, Condobolin is a very strong supporter of Kurralea genetics and regularly attends with, or on behalf of several clients from his area. He is also one who is very alert to the great value that can be attained in the stud drafts for his commercial clients. One is Bill Ramsey who purchased four of the Poll Dorset stud draft from $2250 to $3000, plus three of the better White Suffolk flock rams at $1600 each, averaging $2221 for the seven. Another of Greg’s clients, McDonald Bros, purchased six of the White Suffolk stud draft from $1750 to $2000, then added another nine from the White Suffolk flock ram draft, their 15 rams averaging $1747 in great value buying considering the quality. Greg Moncrieff and Bill Ramsey combined to successfully bid $1600 for the first ram in the lot 100 pen of three rams in the flock ram drafts. The Prentice family donated the proceeds from this ram to Can Assist, an organisation that as its name suggests, assists cancer patients, having experienced that again first hand when Ben’s wife Lucy was diagnosed this year and has undergone extensive and hopefully successful treatment. The 160 Poll Dorset flock ram draft averaged $1640, while the 151 White Suffolks were not far behind, averaging $1556.

Above - Lucy and Ben Prentice donated the $1600 proceeds of the lot 100 ram in the sale to Can Assist, the organisation that has been so important to Lucy and Ben during Lucy’s treatment. They are with the joint purchasers Greg Moncrieff (left) and Bill Ramsey (right), Condobolin.

PENOLA SHOW - 151 years & still going strong FEATURE Celebrating rural life

Last year the Penola Show celebrated 150 years of showcasing rural life and while that saw plenty of special treats at the 2014 event, the 2015 Penola Show still boasts a jam packed program. The 2015 program is highlighted by some of the time honoured events at the Penola Show – the prestigious Rose Competition; the Bush Poetry; the Yard Dog Competitions and the Heifer Classic. cont. opp. page

PENOLA SHOW - 151 years & still going strong FEATURE Celebrating rural life From page 34 There is also the usual livestock and indoor hall displays, exhibitions and competitions, with the animal nursery, SciWorld & Circus Elements all providing plenty of family fun. Displays from Little Athletics; highland dancing; the CFS and SE Light Horseman also add to the show’s festivities, while the Junior Miss Show Girl and Miss and Master Tiny Tot Competitions are always popular. Add to that, the fun of sideshow alley; the thrilling show rides and all the food on offer, and the Penola Show will again offer something for everyone. The sheaf tossing returns – as one of the newer but very popular program highlights, as well. There is the usual equestrian program and, what show would be complete without a fireworks display?

The new season for Little Athletics is fast approaching and things are in full swing for a fantastic season ahead. With new equipment acquired and upgraded facilities completed during the off season, the upcoming 2015/16 season is sure to be an exciting one for all athletes and families. Registrations for the new season of Little Athletics can now be made online. The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre believed the move would streamline the sign-up process for families in the lead-up to the 2015/16 season, which officially begins this Friday. “An Officials/Coaching Day will be held during November, for any parents or carers interested in learning the rules, while children will also be able to gain some valuable coaching tips,” said Mt Gambier District Little Athletics Centre president Tania Thompson, “We are an organisation run by families of the athletes, which promotes enjoyment and involvement, and we depend on these volunteers to ensure the success of our meets.” This year’s athletes will benefit from upgraded high jump and long jump run up areas. This upgrade was with the help of funding from the

State Government’s Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program, the City of Mount Gambier, Mount Gambier High School and Mt Gambier Senior Athletics. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer such top class facilities and program, not only to our own members, but those from other clubs and schools who utilise it,” Tania said. In addition to the weekly Friday night meets, opportunities will be available for Little Athletes to compete at an annual Country Games. This year the Country Games are to be held on Sunday, November 22, at the Mount Gambier facility. In addition, the centre’s own Pentathlon Day is to be held in February next year. The age groups from Under 9 upwards, who meet state qualifying standards throughout the season, will also be eligible to compete at the State Individual Championships at Adelaide’s SANTOS Stadium in March. “But the main aim for athletes is to improve over the season and to achieve personal bests along the way, with the Centre’s motto being Family, Fun & Fitness – Be Your Best,” Tania said..
