Family friendly eatery opens its doors House made icecream, delicious waffles, savoury crepes, specialised kids meals, barista brewed coffee and local wines are all on the menu at Royal Copenhagen Icecreamery & Dessert Bar – Mount Gambier’s newest family restaurant. The doors of the highly anticipated business opened last Wednesday but well before the first icecream was sold, the facebook page had almost 2000 likes. Tony and Marj D’Agostino are the faces behind the Mount Gambier store. “We had always wanted to do something on our own,” Marj said. “But we never sort of knew what.” What they did know, was that Marj had extensive experience in customer service and retail and they both loved entertaining. “We are always having people around home,” Marj

said. “We were returning from one of our visits to Adelaide where our daughter lives and we looked at each other and decided Royal Copenhagen was it.” It has been a steep learning curve for the couple, although Tony admits, it has been Marj that has done the majority of the grunt work to get the project off the ground. “It has been daunting and overwhelming at times but they say whatever doesn’t break you makes you stronger,” Marj said. The fitting of the 7 Commercial Street East property has been a mammoth task. “It was a major build really,” Tony said. “We’ve redone the wiring, the plumbing, the ceiling, the walls and the floor – the location was exactly what we wanted though so we knew it would be a big job to transform it into a restaurant.” The synergy

of the couple’s inaugural business venture together is amazing – it is the same shop Marj started her career in Mount Gambier, working as a retail assistant at Katchor’s Fashion and Cumquat. Of course, Royal Copenhagen Icecreamery & Dessert Bar barely resembled those fashion houses – or its previous tenant The Jolly Swagman. And just as they have modified the menu to include locally produced wines and just as they have trained to create their own icecream on site, the couple also were committed to using local contractors for the rebuild. “They (Royal Copenhagen) offered to bring people down but we really wanted to use local people,” Tony said. “They are the people that are going to be coming here and we want to support the local industry as well.” And the staff is all local, with 17 new jobs created in store alone for this seven day a week operation. Royal Copenhagen Icecreamery & Dessert Bar will be open Monday to Wednesday, 9am-10pm; Thursday to Saturday, 9am-11pm and on Sunday from 9am-4pm. Marj and four of her senior staff have all completed extensive training in Adelaide from Royal Copenhagen experts and the staff has also completed barista training in store in the lead up to last week’s opening. The Mount Gambier store will seat about 60 with outside seating as well and Marj and Tony are hoping to generate a fun, family atmosphere. “It is a great place for families to come, it is multi-generational,” Tony said. “You see grandparents with the grandkids having an icecream or milkshake, kids coming out for dessert while their parents have a drink and teenagers hanging out for a light meal.” Drop into 7 Commercial

ADVERTORIAL I Aerostar Aviation

Your chance to take to the skies

LOCAL Portland gets tick of approval as cruise destination The Port of Portland has been rated above average in the ‘Port Rating’ score made by P&O’s cruise ship passengers during its four Glenelg Shire stopovers. Portland also matched the average ‘Shore Tour Rating’ mark achieved by all ports during each cruise. P&O Cruises visited Portland on February 25 & 26 and March 7 & 10 this year. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Robert Halliday said it was an achievement to receive the mark during the first of what is hoped will be a long relationship with the cruise company. “There was a very quick timeframe between each of these ships arriving in Portland and to be able to cater for the large passenger base each one brought with it proves that we have the capacity match it with any location,” he said. “For Portland to achieve above average on this first series of visits by P&O Cruises is very commendable. “What was particularly impressive was our fast

action in negotiating an early berth for the final cruise ship, allowing them to dock at our port and avoid poor weather. “As with any event, the main goal is to constantly keep learning and improving and that is what we will do going forward. “The cruise ship industry is where we see the future of our tourism market and this is just the beginning for us.” The overall ratings for the visits to Portland were 73 per cent for Port Ratings and 62 per cent for Shore Tour Ratings. For all ports the average ratings were 72 per cent for Port Ratings and 62 per cent for Shore Tour Ratings. To stay up to date with all cruise ships scheduled to arrive at Port of Portland, see the shipping schedule on the Port of Portland website: http:// www.portofportland.com.au/shipping-schedule. html.

Portland Youth Space work set to start in July Aerostar Aviation, has recently opened a new fixed-wing flying school in Mount Gambier. Aerostar Aviation is part of a group of aviation companies based in Adelaide that have been successfully operating fixed wing and helicopters since the 1980s. Aerostar Aviation provide flight training services ranging from the Recreational Pilots Licence through to the Commercial Pilots Licence, which can include additional ratings and endorsements, such as the Instrument Rating. Philip Rawlins, who is an experienced Grade 1 flying instructor with more than 3500 hours flight time, together

with a fully instrument rated Cessna 172S, will be permanently based at the Mount Gambier Regional Airport. Additional aircraft to fulfill your training and charter requirements are also available. For those who are yearning to take to the air, or need an idea for the perfect gift, Aerostar Aviation has a special opening offer for a Trial Introductory Flight (TIF) of only $199 incl GST. You will be thoroughly briefed about the flight and how to use the aircraft controls, before taking off for a 45 minute experience which can be tailored to suit the individual.

PILOT TRAINING NOW AVAILABLE IN MOUNT GAMBIER

The Portland Youth Precinct is expected to take shape from late July, after the tender process for its construction began this week. The first stage of the project could be finished as early as October and will include a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose outdoor space, with new skate/BMX/scooter facility, seating, boardwalks, event space, multi-use recreation space, informal meeting areas, BBQs and lighting. The project has been touted as being a tourism drawcard for the region in the coming years, with stage two to possibly include an extended beach area, car park upgrade and some additional pathways and lighting. The final draft design for the highly anticipated Portland Youth Precinct involved extensive youth consultation and was approved by Council at the end of 2014.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY It’s simple... by Robbie Tansel Children’s birthday parties have changed quite a bit since I was a little fella. I’m pretty sure that my birthday parties were pretty typical of birthday parties back in the 80’s. They were not like my child’s birthdays. What has brought this about

is that it was Shaquille’s third birthday last week. In the modern Tansel house, Donna starts discussing themes for the party about six months from Shaq’s birthday. This is the first difference between modern parties and 80s parties. My mum would tell me three days out that I was allowed to have a party and this is when her planning would start. In fact, back in the day an annual party was pretty unusual. Every few years your parents might suffer through an afternoon with your feral friends. Having decided on the theme Donna will then spend the next few months scouring the internet each night for what themed food she will create and what themed games she will be getting the kids to play. This highlights the next difference between 1980’s Tansel birthday parties and the contemporary version. Food was some chocolate cakes Mum had made (which were delicious by the way), some chicken chips in a wooden bowl, some little sausage rolls and sauce in a silver genie looking dispenser thing. And here’s the thing: what else would you need? As for games, it went like this. “Have you all finished eating? Right, well get outside and play.” There was no parental organisation. There was a backyard. There was a trampoline. There was assorted sporting equipment. Work it out for yourselves kids. Never in my life was there even a simple game of pass the parcel. Once I went to a friend’s party where they played that game with a really cold block of chocolate and if you rolled a six on a dice you got to try to cut off a piece of the chocolate with a knife and fork and then eat it. Worst party ever. Worst game ever. Another part of Donna’s extensive planning might include the venue for the birthday party. Will we go to the lakes? Maybe to another venue with a playground. Maybe we could take all of the children skydiving? They’d probably enjoy that. In my youth, there was one venue. Your house. The only decision may have been whether to have it in the dining room or out on the patio so the mess could just be hosed into the backyard. The next

decision is of course what to put in the lolly bags. You might think that’s a pretty easy decision and pretty clearly implied by the name “lolly bags”. Surely they’ll include lollies. No, we can’t give children lollies these days. Now we give them a variety of plastic junk. The idea is to try to include more toys than your average toy shop. This is a pretty obvious change from my day. If you got a lolly bag, which wasn’t a guarantee or really expected, it would be full of lollies. That wasn’t a health issue at all because most of the time our parents cooked (not bought) us pretty healthy food and we lived outside at every possible moment, participating in some sort of physical activity. Eating a bag of lollies every now and then was no big deal. Kids are used to eating sugary treats several times a day now, so we have to protect them from eating lollies. Here’s the thing. We all loved our birthday. We weren’t wishing the birthday was better organised to a theme. We weren’t wishing there was a jumping castle. Four of our mates had rocked up to our house and brought us some new Lego or a Transformer. How much better could life get? If you were really lucky your Mum had made one of those fancy cakes from the Woman’s Weekly birthday cake book. The racing car was a bit of a favourite. The train was pretty speccy. But even if you had to suffer through a plain old chocolate cake with smarties and 100’s and 1000’s as decoration, life was still pretty damn good. It’s only the parents that are impressed with these fancy new parties and they need to understand that the parties are not for them anyway. All the kids want is fatty food and the opportunity to go crazy, not to mention new toys if you’re the birthday kid. Don’t even get me started on people giving books, clothes or who knows what as presents. Toys! Toys people! I will say, it is lovely all the effort that Donna puts into Shaquille’s birthday. Maybe I’m wrong and it will create magical memories that he’ll remember for life Maybe my birthdays were just like that as a kid because Mum had just gotten out of jail. Actually, now that I think about it… If you think that Back to the Future is a good theme for a children’s birthday party, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com. I’ll give you a hint though. It’s not. Kids don’t know what the future is. They don’t know what the past is. They have no idea of time, like a typical woman. By the way, I believe the theme of my next birthday is Doghouse.

Co-Opera’s new touring production of ‘Cosi fan tutte’ is set to be a popular drawcard of this year’s Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival. Held in Penola’s Rymill Hall, the relaxed Cabaret event offers a fun night of entertainment in Co-Opera’s uniquely vivacious and irreverent style. ‘Cosi fan tutte’ was first performed in 1790 and roughly translates in English to “They all do it like that”. It is a beloved Mozart opera about testing the ties of love and tells the story of sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, who, abandoned by their fiances, deceived by poor disguises and flattered by ardent suitors, surrender to romances of convenience. Mozart’s masterpiece of comedy in music is astonishingly contemporary and continues to engage and delight audiences with its witty insight into relationships and love. Co-Opera’s fine cast of established and emerging operatic artists artfully bring to life this irreverent and touching production, allowing the music to sparkle and the fun to run wild. Co-Opera has been presenting operas to audiences in Penola for over twenty years, and it is always a much anticipated evening which coincides with the opening night of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival. The John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize presentation will be held on Thursday, May 21, in the Penola High School Hall, followed by Co-Opera at Penola’s Rymill Hall. “Co-Opera has established a strong following in Penola over many years, so we are thrilled to have them presenting this comedic opera as part of our festival this year,” said organiser Peter Muller. “This year there will be a large cast including six singers, seven members of the orchestra, the conductor and three technical crew,” he said. “The Co-Opera cast and crew love coming to this district, and it is the one region that they have visited continuously for more than twenty years, which is an excellent reflection on our audiences and community.” The performance is sung in English except for the opera’s most famous aria Un Aura Amorosa [A Loving Aura] which is sung in Italian. Guests are invited to BYO drinks and nibbles, and if they feel inclined are welcome to dress up in Black Tie, and all, to make it a night to remember. Tickets are available through the Penola Visitor Information Centre on (08)8737 2855.

LOCAL LIBRARY SET FOR A FACELIFT The Hamilton Library will be closed from Friday, May 8, until Wednesday, May 20, to enable important refurbishment works to take place. The refurbishment will involve some minor building works, new carpet, new in-built desks and display shelving as well as some minor rewiring and painting. Library services manager Sarah Stephens is excited that these works are finally taking place. “We were successful in receiving funding from the State Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure program late last year toward this project and we are so pleased to see it all coming together,” Ms Stephens said. Library staff will also use the closure as an opportunity to undertake a substantial management and maintenance project on the collections in Hamilton and on the Mobile Library, as well as sending all staff to an all-day training session offered by Central Highlands Libraries. “Closing for this period of time allows for two projects to be delivered and staff training to be completed. We have planned for these activities to coincide to reduce service interruption for our customers and community,” Ms Stephens said. “While we understand this closure will have quite some impact on our community, we will certainly be able to achieve a lot for our customers in a short period of time.” Library members will have access to their accounts via the website as usual and all of our online resources will still be available. Items can be returned through the after-hours chute.

LOCAL Jazz capital of Australia ready for influx of students & international acts The grounds of Mount Gambier’s Barn Palais have been transformed into ‘Jazz Central’ in the lead-up to the nation’s biggest jazz music festival, Generations

in Jazz, with the giant James Morrison Pavilion ready for its first sound check after a few days of construction. Large enough to hold a record 3700 participants and their supporters for the May 1-3 event, the circus-style pavilion is visible from several kilometres away, and is the largest of four pavilions being erected at the site over the coming days. A total of 208 stage bands from around Australia will perform at this year’s event, while 12 vocalists and solo instrumentalists will be in the running for two prestigious scholarships designed to assist in career development. Adjudication begins on Friday, May 1, with members of guest international act Hot Horn Happening among the prestigious judging panel. For the first time, a separate award for talented instrumental students in either their first or second year of high school will also be offered. Publicity officer Jim Kirkup said music teachers had been asked to nominate students for the Ross and Jenny Blanchard Development Award, which will provide financial assistance to two teenagers in order to help them to reach their potential. “Ross and Jenny Blanchard are long-time supporters of GIJ who are aware that there are music students out there who may not have the resources to have the right instrument, or be able to afford the music lessons they need, so with this in mind, they are offering $5000 to both a female and a male recipient at the beginning of their high school journey, which will hopefully assist them towards being a finalist one day in the James Morrison Jazz Scholarship,” he said. Participating schools are being billeted in hotels, halls, clubrooms and private homes across the district, and Lisa Braes, from the Mount Gambier Visitor Information Centre, said accommodation in Mount Gambier was now fully booked out for the event, with Millicent and Penola also reported to be heavily booked. “Currently, the only accommodation still available in Mount Gambier are Homestay

properties, and there are up to 19 still available on the Generations in Jazz website,” she said. Mount Gambier’s Chapmans Newsagency manages ticket sales for the event, and owner Colin Martin said the newly-released weekend pass, which provides entry to all four shows at the discounted price of $150/Adult and $100/Student, was proving incredibly popular. “There are a lot of families linked to musicians that are coming, but we also do get the regulars who travel here purely for the jazz; James Morrison and his guests are pretty magnetic attractions for these people,” he said. The multi-platinum selling US sextet Take 6 is the major guest act for 2015. Heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet”, Take 6 is the quintessential a cappella group and has won 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, and a Soul Train Award. Some of the world’s most high-profile jazz musicians will also be reuniting for an exclusive Australian encore at GIJ. Formed by Australian virtuoso James Morrison in 1994, The Hot Horn Happening headlined every major festival in Europe, and is described by Morrison as “one of those magical accidents where just the right people came together at just the right time to create something that you couldn’t plan or design if you tried for a lifetime”. The line-up features former LA legendturned-James Morrison Music Academy staff member, Jeff Clayton (pictured above), and Rickey Woodard on saxophone, New York’s Martin Wind (bass) the UK’s Mark Nightingale (trombone) and Brian Kellock (piano), John Morrison on drums and James Morrison on trumpet. They will be back on stage for the Generations in Jazz Concert on Saturday, May 2, at 8pm and during the Finale Concert at 1pm on May 3. Tickets to the various performances are available from Chapman’s Newsagency or generationsinjazz. com.au/tickets/

Mount Gambier based ABC Online Reporter, Kate Hill, will join the line up for this year’s Swinging with the Stars to be held at The Barn, Mount Gambier on Saturday, June 20. Kate has secured a place due to the withdrawal of Lucindale’s Celeste Pietsch, due to an ill-timed hand injury sustained whilst playing netball last weekend. Celeste, whilst disappointed to be unable to take part this year, has put her name forward as a participant for next year’s event. Kate Hill is excited to be a “last minute ring-in and is a big believer in supporting local charities and events. The Stand Like Stone Foundation is out there helping local people do amazing things and I think it’s one of the best organisations to support,” Kate said. Although a Mount Gambier local, Kate left the region when she was 17 years old and it took her 17 years to be persuaded to come back, but she is very happy to be based back in the region. Her career in journalism has taken her to many corners of the world including time spent in Sydney, Tamworth and Scotland, where she learned to bootscoot and the Scottish fling. She is itching to show off these diverse talents,

but may have to switch the cowboy boots for a pair of ballroom slippers. Kate will join the 2015 line-up, which includes; •Renowned local Lucindale based artist Karen Burow who is raising funds for Lucindale Area School scholarship fund. • Grant High School teacher Josh Praolini, who is rumoured to be as electrifying as Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, and is raising funds for Stand Like Stone’s Grant High School student scholarship. •Mount Gambier’s Lauren Holmes whose superior accounting skills could prove useful as she counts the beats across the Barn Ballroom. • Naracoorte’s international travel expert Charlie Legoe who can advise you of your global travel needs, but will he surrender to the salsa? •Energiser bunny Ellie Wilson who will outlast the competition as she fine-tunes her foxtrot and raises funds for Stand Like Stone’s Penola Coonawarra Wellbeing subfund. • Ben “Robin” Hood of the dynamic helloFriday duo! This Boy Wonder is certain to kapow the crowd on his crusade to outshine the competition. • Mount Gambier’s David Fox who can write a sign for any occasion but will he find his inner Swayze and prove to his wife that he can actually dance? Kim Cella from Hype Dance is pleased with the “Stars” progress to date and is confident that Kate Hill will have no trouble catching up the missed rehearsals. The event is shaping up to be a massive evening, with Jason Scheidel taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies and Christy Radford, from With Love Photography capturing memories from the night through the lens. James Morrison Academy of Music will provide the incredible big band sound and the dance floor is not just reserved for the stars, with Stand Like Stone again securing vocalists Roxane

LeBrasse, placed 9th in the third season of Australian Idol, and Glen Cunningham, 2012 season of ‘The Voice’, to entice the crowd onto the dance floor. Last year the event raised a record amount of more than $70,000 and attracted a packed house of more than 430 people to the Barn Palais. “We are thrilled to have Kate Hill as a dancer this year. The ABC South East team have been strong supporters of Swinging with the Stars since it began, and it is wonderful to have one of their own in the limelight. Kate will do a wonderful job and we are looking forward to another huge success in 2015,” said Swinging with the Stars committee member Sue Charlton AM. Tickets for Swinging with the Stars are $85 and will be on sale from May 11 at Chapman’s Newsagency, Mount Gambier, Ph 8725 3300. Local Sport MGNA - Back to the future for Vicis as club celebrates 50th anniversary When the players of Vicis Netball Club stepped on court for the season opener on ANZAC Day, it marked the 50th anniversary for the club in the Mount Gambier Netball Association. As well as hoping to win back-to-back A grade premierships, Vicis is celebrating its half century by unveiling a new-look uniform and hosting a reunion on May 9. Vicis Club president Aaron Myers encouraged anyone connected with the club to attend. “It’s our 50th year in the association and we’re looking to make a big year of it,” he said. “The reunion is for all current and past players, committee members, club members, volunteers, family members. We’re really looking forward to it. The more the merrier. We’re just trying to create that big, fun, family atmosphere that we all love here at the club.” This season, Vicis is fielding 186 players in 16 teams – 11 junior and five senior. “We have juniors that are playing in the senior grades as well, to help their development,” Aaron said. “And we’ve also got a few of our players who are representing the association in the squad team, so we’ve got a good club foundation and we’re looking good.” While it remains strong in the competition, the club president says Vicis strives to be a family friendly club. “We pride ourselves on being the family club. That’s one thing we always promote above anything else,” he said. “It’s not the World Championships – it’s here for kids and players that want to have a game just to come out and do what they want to do.... and that’s have fun.” The season kicked off on ANZAC Day, with a re-match of the 2014 A grade grand final between reigning premiers Vicis and Hobitz and perhaps fittingly, ended in a draw. It was also the premiere of Vicis’ new look uniform, as a special addition to its 50th year. The lycra outfits are a far cry from

the green pleated, wrap-around skirts and white T-shirt players sported in Vicis’ early years. “Being the 50th year, we decided to go back to more of our heritage colours, which is predominately a green one,” Aaron said. “In previous years we’ve been wearing a more predominantly red uniform, with a bit a green and white through it, but we thought our 50th was a good year to make a change, go back to our traditional heritage colour...and the girls are looking great.” One of those who will be attending the 50th reunion is Vicis’ life member Helen Moulden. She first became involved with Vicis back in 1983, when her daughters were looking to join a netball team mid-season. A family was leaving town, opening up two spots in the same Vicis team. “And that was it - my eldest two daughters started playing in 1983, and I’ve been around ever since,” Helen said. The girls started playing in the under 10s. “The all played on until they left town to go to university,” she said. “They’d come home during school holidays and fill in. A couple of them, when they finished their uni degrees, came back here to live for a while, so they played again. “One daughter came back twice and played a full season. So yeah, we’ve been around a long time.” Helen started out on the sidelines, just as a mum cheering her daughters along. But it didn’t take long before she was roped in for more complex duties. “I was sitting there one day, not too many weeks into the experience, and a person came up and said `we need an umpire. Here’s a whistle. You’re on court four’,” she said. “I didn’t even know the rules. They said to just blow it when the ball goes out of court. “That was my introduction to umpiring, which I did then for the club for a lot of years....and still do.”But Helen’s involvement didn’t end there. From spectator to umpire, it was only a short step to hitting the court as a player herself. Helen played as high as A grade, and won a number of premierships playing in other grades. She played as goal defence mainly, and switched to goal keeper in later years. With four daughters all playing for Vicis, Helen said she appreciated the friendly and family atmosphere of Vicis. “It was good for us. The atmosphere was always really friendly and everyone would look after everyone else’s kids. A real family atmosphere,” she said. The Vicis Netball Club 50 year reunion is being held on May 9 at the association clubrooms at 6.30pm.

To purchase tickets, call Robin Collins on 0437 268 229. Tickets are $15 and finger food will be provided.

Motor LOCAL The Abbott Government’s $100 million Mobile Black Spot Program has reached an important milestone, with proposals now received for funding under the program. “This is about delivering on the Coalition’s election commitment to boost mobile coverage in outer metropolitan, regional and remote Australia, said Member for Barker, Tony Pasin. “Each of the mobile network operators, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, has come forward with a proposal. The Government is currently assessing the proposals, and aims to be in a position to announce the list of base stations by June 30, 2015. “The competitive selection process for locations is not a ‘winner takes all’ process; rather the funding will be allocated ‘base station by base station. The Government will assess each proposed base station against the criteria specified in the program guidelines, to determine the base stations to receive funding. “The process is designed to maximise competition in two ways – between locations, and between bidders – to get as many new base stations as possible for the money, Mr Pasin said. The program has been designed to encourage co-contributions from other levels of government. The details of the competitive selection process are set out in the program guidelines which are available on the Department of Communications website.

Road safety forum not to be missed RAP is returning to Mount Gambier for a community event for one night only at the Dress Circle upstairs in Mount Gambier’s Main Corner complex on Wednesday, May 6. Don’t be misled, this is not a hip hop performance but a confronting, hard hitting program that can and has changed the culture of many of our road users, young and old. The Mount Gambier Community session is in addition to the annual program of visits that the Metropolitan Fire Service fire fighters take to senior secondary students throughout the Limestone Coast. It is regarded as one measure that has brought about positive change resulting in a significant reduction in fatalities in the 16-19 year old age group in South Australia, a measure that can also applied to older road users. Rod Campbell from SAMFS is a long time champion of RAP which has been delivered throughout South Australia not only to secondary schools, but individual businesses, business groups, sporting clubs and community groups as well as interstate drawing glowing praise from business, AFL Clubs and cricket academies. “It’s about changing the culture, having people recognise whether they are really responsible drivers or whether they just think they are. We pull no punches; we can’t in our graphic and emotional presentation. What we

have seen are people of all ages leaving uplifted and empowered to make positive changes in their driving behaviour when on our roads. It also leads to them applying positive peer pressure amongst their circle of friends. MFS Road crash coordinators who have removed countless road crash victims from vehicles in their career will be supported in this presentation by Marcus Johnstone. Marcus is a road crash survivor who recounts his powerful story as how his life was
