It will be the ultimate summer holiday guide for locals and tourists alike. LOCAL Sales of driftwood Christmas pieces to aid Typhoon victims The devastating effect of the current typhoon Hagupit or Ruby as it is locally know in the Philippines highlights just how precious life is. For many years Mount Gambier retailer Calum Haygarth, from Gardenarium and The Limestone Coast Grou,p has supported the villagers along the coastlines of the regions hit for four years in a row, with many of the villagers not even having built new homes from last years typhoon. “Many of the products we sell are from poor, underdeveloped countries and in particular the range of driftwood creations we have each year are from pieces of driftwood harvested from the beaches by local villagers in the current typhoon hit area,” he said. “Each village is allowed to harvest a certain amount of driftwood thrown up from the typhoons and craft them into the wonderful pieces we sell from Christmas decorations to spheres, planters and decorative wreathes , some even with shells carefully incorporate - I am continually amazed at their creativity given the adversity.” Calum is urging everyone to dig deep this Christmas by buying a piece of driftwood artwork or ornaments that will last forever. “They are extremely well priced considering the transportation and shipping to us and we feel warm knowing that the proceeds are helping the villagers rebuild their lives,” he said. Items start from very low priced Christmas stars at only $9 so ideal for a Kris Kringle, with even the

more intricate piece really far too low priced for the work involved, especially for the western world. One shipping container is still on the water but has pulled up in port as the typhoon continues in the region, meaning many of the pieces we had expected will not land until the new year, however we still have plenty of stock for the next two weeks.

LOCAL New health career opportunities in Portland & Hamilton In a first for south-west Victoria, Deakin University is making its Bachelor of Health Sciences course more accessible by offering the first year of the degree in Portland and Hamilton. Commencing in 2015, students will be able to study the first year of the Bachelor of Health Sciences either full time or part time and then complete the course at Deakin Warrnambool Campus or via online study. They also have the option to use the year of study as a stepping stone into related health courses such as psychology, nursing, social work and occupational therapy. The joint initiative between Deakin University and South West TAFE is part of the Great South Coast Health Articulation Project funded by the Victorian Government’s Regional Partnership Facilitation Fund. The project aims to meet the growing needs for skilled health professionals throughout the region. The new pathways were formally launched last Thursday through a video link connecting Hamilton and Portland. The course will be delivered at the Deakin Learning Centre located at South West TAFE’s Portland Campus and Ballarat Road site in Hamilton utilising interactive videoconferencing technology to

receive the lectures from Warrnambool followed by face to face tutorials at the centres. Manager of the project for Deakin University Warrnambool Campus, Linda Wilkie-Bell said this mode of delivery model has been successfully piloted across the State over the past five years. “This is a great opportunity for people in the Hamilton and Portland regions to start their university study closer to home,” Ms Wilkie-Bell said. “It is helpful for people with family commitments, for those who wish to continue working and for Portland and Hamilton people who want to live another year at home,” she added. At Portland, Deakin has delivered the former Associate Degree of Arts, Business and Sciences from 2011 – 2013 and still offers the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education there. This is Deakin’s first foray into Hamilton. The Bachelor of Health Sciences course is a successful and popular course. Recent graduate Andree Schier, who now has a job in health promotion for the Northern Grampians Shire, described it was “one of the best experiences of my life. “Looking back I am so happy I decided to take the chance to do something so incredible,” she said.

LOCAL Artists of the Valley on show Currently showing at the Portland Arts Centre is an exhibition of works by Artists of the Valley Inc. Part of the Glenelg Shire Arts Program, the exhibition is a representation of vibrant work from a collective of artists based primarily in Casterton and the Western District of Victoria, but also includes the work of members from Melbourne and Penola. Works encompass a broad range of styles from realism to abstract, and everything in between in two- and threedimensional art. Mediums include acrylic, watercolour, oil, pencil, pastel, printmaking, and glass. An eclectic mix of subject matter is evident, derived from each individual’s inspiration, focus, and muse. The Portland Arts Centre is located at 4 Glenelg Street, Portland, on the corner of Glenelg and Bentinck Street. The exhibition will run throughout December and continue until January 23

Cut each potato in half again to form quarters. Place on 2 large baking trays. Spray with oil. Season well with salt and pepper. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden and crisp. Meanwhile, make Mild chilli beef: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add onion and capsicum. Cook for 5 minutes or until onion has softened. Add mince. Cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, for 5 minutes or until browned. Add garlic, chilli powder and coriander. Cook for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add tomato, stock and beans. Cook for 10 minutes or until slightly thickened. Arrange potato skins in a 5cm-deep, 26cm round pie dish. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup cheese. Top with mince mixture. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake for 15 minutes or until cheese has melted. Serve topped with avocado, yoghurt, tomato and parsley.

ADVERTORIAL I Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear Belpharitis – a common link to dry eyes

LOCAL

Horrible Bosses 2 NOW SHOWING Dale, Kurt and Nick decide to start their own business but things don’t go as planned because of a slick investor, prompting the trio to pull off a harebrained and misguided kidnapping scheme.

Blepharitis is a common eyelid inflammation that sometimes is associated with a bacterial eye infection, symptoms of dry eyes or certain types of skin conditions such as acne rosacea. Blepharitis has two basic forms: • Anterior blepharitis, affecting the outside front of the eyelid where eyelashes are attached. • Posterior blepharitis, linked to dysfunction of meibomian glands within the eyelids that secrete oils to help lubricate the eye. It’s common to have a mixture of both anterior and posterior forms of blepharitis at the same time, but in different degrees of severity. Although optometrist and eye doctors commonly diagnose blepharitis, it can be difficult to find permanent relief of the symptoms that can include burning, flaking, crusting, tearing, irritation, itching, redness in eyelid margins and a foreign body sensation. Treatment for Blepharitis Blepharitis can be difficult to manage because it is often chronic, meaning that it never goes away completely. Cleaning the eyelids is essential to blepharitis treatment. Cleansing agents such as warm water, diluted baby shampoo or a special over-the-counter product made specifically for cleansing the lids, should be used on a daily basis to control infection and inflammation. To clean eyelids: • Wash your hands, then dip a clean washcloth, cotton swab or gauze pad into your cleaning solution. • Make sure you squeeze out any excess moisture. • Gently wipe across your lashes and lid

margin. • Rinse with cool water. • clean your lids several times daily to start, and then once daily thereafter Besides a program of eyelid hygiene, the severity of the blepharitis and related symptoms may require supplemental treatment with topical and oral medicine. In some cases of posterior blepharitis, eye doctors recommend nutritional supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, such as flaxseed oil, to aid healthy function of meibomian glands that provide essential lubrication for eye and eyelid comfort. Is There a Cure for Blepharitis? A complete blepharitis cure may not exist. But as explained above, good eyelid hygiene and prescription medicine are often effective in managing blepharitis, while warm compresses and lid massages can help unclog obstructed meibomian glands. Because blepharitis and dry eyes commonly occur together, using over-the-counter or prescription artificial tears will help relieve symptoms.

AT THE CINEMA

Australia’s longest running food and wine festival has announced that award-winning food journalist and television personality Matt Preston has become the ambassador for the 2015 Grampians Grape Escape, May 2 & 3. Based at the foot of the majestic Mount William the Grampians Grape Escape celebrates the best gastronomic producers and wine makers from the Grampians region with more than 125 exhibitions of food, beer, wine and cider artisans to sample at the 24th staging of the event. Mr Preston will entertain audiences by hosting cooking demonstrations over both days, giving festival attendees the opportunity to soak up some of his culinary secrets using fresh local Grampians produce. “I love the country around the Grampians – for its people, its great produce and its great wine – so it’s a no-brainer that I’ve become an ambassador for the Grampians Grape Escape,” Mr Preston said. “It’s one of Australia’s best regional food and wine events and the perfect excuse to get out to this stunning part of the world to sip, taste and savour everything the region has to offer, all in one place. There is also the attraction of sharing a few of my cooking secrets with the majestic Grampians National Park as my backdrop, as Mount William is one of the few things in Victoria that makes me feel small.” For the wine connoisseur, bid for the best Shiraz from the Grampians region at the hotly contested Barrique Auction and you can taste the signature wines of more than 35 wineries by some of the oldest vines in the world. The event also caters for junior foodies with lots of family fun activities available to keep the kids entertained like roving entertainment, rock climbing, face painting and a traditional grape stomping experience. With longer opening hours, the Grampians Grape Escape starts on Saturday, May 2, at 10am through to 6pm. Sunday’s program runs from 9am to 4pm. Full programs at www.grampiansgrape escape.com.au.

ADVERTORIAL I South Eastern Automobile Club Celebrating 60 years In 2014, the South Eastern Automobile Club of South Australia Inc (SEAC) celebrates an important milestone, the 60th anniversary of the formation of the club. The occasion will be formally recognised with a celebration, also the club’s 2014 season presentation dinner, to be held at the Presidential Motor Inn, Jubilee Highway West, Mount Gambier, on Saturday, January 17. SEAC extends an invitation to all associated with the club over its 60 years to attend and re-live some of the memories and the history of the club. On June 4, 1954, 29 car enthusiasts met with the view of forming an automobile club. Those present agreed to do so and on July 2, 1954, SEAC held its first official meeting, with Syd Chapman as innaugural President and T. Rhodes Secretary. By the end of its first year of operation, SEAC membership had expanded to more than 120 persons, including Aub Shelton and Allan Scott and many other notable men and women from over the South East. Early competion included Reliability Trials, Motorkhanas, Economy runs and Hill climbs. Cars used at the time were generally stock standard road cars, driven to the events and used as the family car during the week. Makes and models included Morris Major’s and Minor’s, Volkswagens, Austins, Ford Zephyrs, Consul’s and V8 Customlines, Early Holden’s and Peugeots to name a few. SEAC was one of the first country car club’s to be affiliated with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) and was to host Redex and Ampol Round Australia Trials as they passed through the region and later the Repco in 1979. Also around this time, Rallying was gaining interest among SEAC members, and with the introduction of the Group G category across Australia which allowed vast freedoms in car construction, large fields of entrants would line up for these navigational “trials”.

SEAC became a member of the “Western Regions Trial Series” and hosted and ran it’s first round of that series in 1989. The early 1990s with the phasing out of Group G and the introduction of PRC (Production Rally car) saw many SEAC members build or change cars to the new class and compete also further afield in State Championship Rallies. Attending and involvement in this level of event saw an opportunity to promote SEAC to a higher level and led to the hosting of a round of the S A Rally Championship in 1992. Then in 1995 & ‘96, the event grew to be the South Australian Round of the Australian Rally Championship as well , with Neal Bates and the late Possum Bourne taking honours. During the 1990s, the club was to finally find a place to call home, with the purchase of an abanoned limestone quarry on Megaw Road, Compton. Work on SEAC Park, as it was to be called, began in earnest, and now boasts a 2km autocross track, grassed pit areas, club rooms & shelter shed, generator and equipment and machinery all now owned by the club. Membership by now was at a very strong level and SEAC experienced up to 60 drivers at SEAC Park Rallysrints. Trials and Motorkhanas were also attracting good entries. In to the new Century, and a new challenge. A hill climb was proposed for the road from the Valley Lake crater, and after many years of negotiation with the City of Mount Gambier Council, the late Lionel Stingers secured permission and in the 2006, the innaugural Legends of the Lake Hillclimb was run with great success and quickly became one of the leading events of it’s type in the country. The 2015 hill climb will be the 10th anniversary of the event, which has become a major part of not only SEAC’s annual calendar but also that of Mount Gambier.

Above - SEAC members have a proud history of competing in national level motor sport in Australia. Local trials driver Tom Quill (right) and navigator Syd Chapman (centre) discuss final arrangements for the 1958 Mobilgas Trial with Mr K. Reudiger. They are leaving for Sydney where the 16,250km (10,000 mile) event started Quill’s third round Australian Trial.
