COVER Join the rugby league revolution A Rugby League 9 a side carnival will be hosted by Mount Gambier Rugby League this Saturday, with 10 interstate, intrastate and local teams registered to play. Organisers hope that the local community will rally to support the four local teams competing against Adelaide and Melbourne teams, and possibly consider Rugby League 9s as a sporting option for the future. Admittance is free to the South Aussie Hotel Rugby League 9s Cup, which will be held at the East Gambier Sportsmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Oval from 9am until 6pm. Two games will be played concurrently in a round robin format throughout the day, with referees from the SA NRL. There will also be free childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s activities including a jump castle, temporary tattoos, giveaways, and a special visit by Santa in the afternoon. Food and drink will be available, with no BYO alcohol permitted. All are welcome. The Mount Gambier Rugby League association has recently been formed, with three Mount Gambier teams and one

Naracoorte team currently listed. Some of the current players are inexperienced and using the sport to keep fit during their regular sports off season, while others are more skilled in the game. A new 13 week season will commence in January and new teams and players are most welcome; no experience is necessary. Mini Roos will become Maxi Roos this Saturday at the Blue Lake Soccer Club. Max Hooper (pictured), who has been part of the Mini Roos program in the past, has undergone an operation in Adelaide to remove a brain tumour and so the Mini Roos are joining forces with the Mount Gambier community in supporting the Hooper family with this fundraising event. There will be seven a side games for under 7s, 9s and 12s. This will involve a gold coin donation followed by a sausage sizzle. Even if your child isn’t a soccer player, it is a great opportunity for a great cause to just join in. The rules are easy and it will be a lot of fun. If you choose to come along you will be slotted you in a team or you could register a team of seven by contacting Melinda Peake on 0429 703 338. Games will commence at 4pm.

LOCAL Beachport Triathlon in good hands

IS THAT A FACT? The Dutch village of Giethoorn has no roads; its buildings are connected entirely by canals and footbridges.

Helen Russell and Gabby Reeves started the Beachport Triathlon in 2010 as part of the Beachport Festival. The original idea was born after many training sessions the girls did preparing for the Kingston Triathlon in 2009. The response was so positive it has continued as an annual event with numbers growing from 120 in 2010 to more than 200 last year. A committee was formed in2011 and with the huge Beachport volunteer support, the event is a fixture on the Australian Triathlon Calendar. Founding Committee members include Bob Grieve, Julie Moran, Rhonda Burleigh, Darren Simons and Linda Lambert. Helen remained involved as race director until 2013 and Gabby was race director in 2014. The 2015 event is on Sunday, March 15 and preparations, which include a new committee, are well underway. As part of the transition from the initial committee, the Mount Gambier Triathlon Club, which is taking charge in 2015, assisted with last year’s event. Tri Club representative Craig Dunn recently presented a cheque for $3000 to the Beachport Lions Club to be used for future community projects to be planned in the seaside town. Wattle Range Council is also assisting with the coordination of next year’s triathlon. Online registrations have already opened for the March 15 event and a band of volunteers are again set to make it a successful day. Information and entry forms for the 2015 Bompas of Beachport Triathlon can be found online at http://tiny.cc/beachporttriathlon The event is financially independent, thanks to the many businesses and people who sponsor the event. Over time the funds generated have been spent on outdoor equipment for the Beachport community. Equipment includes swimming buoys placed at 100m and 200m from the shore at the front beach, and a swimming pontoon. Over the first four years money was also invested into equipment for the event. This included signage, fencing andother infrastructure resulting in a very well equipped event for 2014. The balance of funds from the 2010 – 2013 events, were happily donated to the Beachport Lions Club. The amount of $5000 will be used for more outdoor equipment for the Beachport Community. Another $1000 will be allocated to start up funds for the 2015 Beachport Triathlon. Jess Angus has been a hairdresser for six years and while she cautiously entered the industry, she now loves every aspect. Jess is the new stylist at Mount Gambier salon Hair Extensions Full Stop and after working and living in four States over the past few years she is looking to make her mark here in Mount Gambier. A Portland local, Jess learnt her trade in Tasmania. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left school so I started a Certificate II in Hairdressing and it really grew on me from there,” Jess said. LOCAL Rifle club helps fundraising eﬀort

The Hamilton Rifle Club has given the STAY Residential Services appeal a shot in the arm and also given some of the clients an inside look at their sport. The club raised about $800 at its recent South West Games with all proceeds being donated to STAY Residential Services. The members’ support for STAY took on another dimension when they hosted some of the clients for a practice session at the club. STAY Residential Services CEO Maree Sandford said the two-pronged offers of support were appreciated. Ms Sandford said the $800 donation was a welcome boost to the appeal which aims to raise $150,000 for renovations to the new head office at 46 Brown Street that will bring together all administrative services as well as space to operate client activities. The appeal needs to raise a further $80,000. The South

West Games were fully sponsored along with donations of meat for a barbecue cooked by three STAY clients. “I’d like to thank the club and their generous sponsors for supporting the event,” Ms Sandford said. She added that the come and try session for clients was an added bonus.“The club has been extremely supportive of our guys and some are talking about going to the Saturday shoots,” Ms Sandford said. STAY provides services for people with disabilities and supports 16 people with a disability who live in STAY residential homes, provides respite for 47 people and supports other people with disabilities in the community. LOCAL Helping spread genuine Christmas cheer So many of us take Christmas Day and all the celebrations that go with it for granted. Whether it’s a large family gathering or a smaller get together, we usually spend the day with close friends or family and it is a special time with plenty of delicious food on offer. That’s not the case for everyone though. Some people simply don’t have anyone to share the day with and others simply can’t afford to. That’s where the Community Christmas Day Lunch comes in. The brainchild of Leigh Marcus and now hosted by St Martins Lutheran Church and supported by the City of Mount Gambier and ac.care Limestone Coast, the Community Christmas Day Lunch has been running since 2009. On that Christmas Day, it hosted 80 people. Last year there were around 120at the event and this year, organisers are expecting at least that number. After its humble beginnings in 2009, the event has now moved to Mount Gambier’s Main Corner, thanks to the generosity of the Mount Gambier City Council and this year it has the added attraction of being catered for by a qualified chef from the South Aussie Hotel. “He overheard me talking about it over a coffee at McDonald’s and just offered to cook this year,” Leigh said. And that’s the sort of generosity of spirit that allows this lunch to go ahead every year. “It’s a wonderful, family friendly environment and it’s for everyone,” Leigh said. It is a free lunch and at the suggestion of some guests it was only in recent times that the organisers have

even asked for donation. “Some of the people at the lunch said we should have a donation tin and we did it and we got about $400 which was amazing,” Leigh said. Along with the three course meal, which follows a traditional menu of soup, a roast meal and Christmas pudding for dessert, there are also gifts for everyone and with the 25 or so volunteers the function needs already locked in, cash donations are now the easiest and best way people can help with the 2014 Community Christmas Day Lunch. “People in the past have been amazing offering food and gifts and things but cash is really the most helpful so we can get exactly what we need,” Leigh said. On many occasions, the lunch has not just catered for locals looking for a place to spend Christmas but also visitors to the region and as a result, there have been similar events established in Naracoorte, Broome and Port Fairy by people that have previously attended the Mount Gambier event. “It’s not just about the meal either, it’s about getting together with people and talking and not being alone at a time of the year when it can be tough to be alone,” Leigh said. LOCAL Dartmoor construction underway Construction of the Dartmoor Transfer Station is underway, with work expected to be finalised within four months. It’s the second transfer station development progressing in Glenelg Shire, after construction began at the Nelson site in October. Limestone and backfilling material are now being imported to Dartmoor from Council’s quarry to begin formation of the new internal roads. The update follows the approval of two Sustainability Victoria (SV) Rural and Regional Landfill Support Program Fund applications, for the development

of transfer stations in Casterton and Portland, at November’s Meeting of Council. The total grant application was for $650,000. Glenelg Shire will contribute more than a 50 percent share of the project, as required by the funding application. The transformation of each of the Shire’s landfills to transfer stations forms part of Glenelg Shire’s vision for a healthier environment, zero waste and better recycling facilities and is one of Council’s top 10 priority projects.Further updates will be provided as key milestones are completed at each site.

Lighting program nearing the end Nelson, Dartmoor and Casterton will be fitted with about 380 energy efficient lights by mid-2015, as the final stage of the Great South Coast Street Smart Lighting Program is rolled out. So far, in Glenelg Shire, new energy efficient compact fluorescent have been retrofitted in Portland, Narrawong, Tyrendarra, Heathmere, Heywood, Bolwarra and Bridgewater. In mid-2012, the Great South Coast Group was awarded more than $1.4 million from the Federal Government for the regional street lighting project. This was to involve the replacement of 7500 public street lights with environmentally-friendly globes across Glenelg Shire, Moyne Shire Council, Southern Grampians Shire, Warrnambool City Council, Corangamite Shire Council and the Colac Otway Shire

With 62 per cent less energy used per light in this recent install, the new lights reduce costs to ratepayers, reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 300 tonnes per annum and provide greater uniformity of light across and along the street. The total cost savings to ratepayers from this project, over the life of the assets, is expected to be about $9.8m. The Great South Coast Street Smart Lighting Program will also save 53,000 tonnes of greenhouse emissions.

Southern Grampians Shire Council is preparing a Master Plan for the Hamilton Botanic Gardens. The gardens, located in the heart of Hamilton, are one of the most intact examples of 19th Century Botanic Gardens in all Victoria and are an important of Hamilton’s history. Designed by William Guilfoyle, one of Australia’s greatest garden designers, the Hamilton Botanic Gardens include an impressive display of 19th century trees, an ornamental lake and a caretaker’s cottage dating back to the 1870s. The Master Plan for the Hamilton Botanic Gardens will guide its development over the next 10 years, providing a structure for future works and management. The plan will build on the historic gardens, maintaining their heritage significance and well-loved features, while proposing new works to further enhance the gardens. Council have engaged Laidlaw & Laidlaw Design to develop the Master Plan, who have extensive experience designing many of Victoria’s Botanic Gardens. Initial draft concept

designs and proposed upgrades/improvements for the Botanic Gardens are now available for public comment and can be viewed at council’s Market Place and Brown Street business centres or online at www.sthgrampians.v ic.gov.au The proposed works include: • new paths to better connect the existing exits/entrances of the gardens • an additional toilet block located near the BBQ and playground area • removal of the smaller bird aviary • upgraded garden beds more reflective of Guilfoyle’s original design • creation of a new community hub (in the area of the existing animal enclosure) with a strong focus on creating an interactive experience for a wide range of user groups, and would comprise such elements as an education centre, picnic area and water features. It’s very sad that in the year 2014 people with disabilities are still exploited in our world. You’d think that we live in a time that is more enlightened and this sort of thing just doesn’t and shouldn’t happen anymore. Here’s what’s got me disappointed in where we are as a society. You might have heard recently that Stevie Wonder’s fiancée is expecting. Mr Wonder already has eight children to five different women before the new arrival. I’ve worked out how and why this has happened. Obviously Stevie Wonder is not just getting busy with any woman who crosses his path. He’s a professional entertainer with high morals like all the rest of the superstars in the world. They never get up to this sort of shenanigans. What is happening is that Stevie thinks he’s sexing with his wife. He’s blind; he can’t tell the difference. Other women are tricking him to do things with them making out that they are actually his wife. He’s being taken advantage of and doesn’t know anything until his wife arrives home and then says that actually it wasn’t her. Boy I bet Stevie feels silly when he realises he’s been tricked again. I haven’t checked any of this on Wikipedia so there is a chance that it’s not true. The only problem with my theory is that as a blind man Stevie Wonder should be extremely skilled and experienced at getting meaning from rubbing his hands across bumps. Working out which woman is which is kind of similar to reading braille, you’d think. If I ever

The swimmers achieved an impressive 43 personal best times, including seven new times. Claire Redding took an impressive 17 seconds off her 100m breaststroke time. Other impressive PBs achieved on the day were Daniel O’Callaghan, with a 25 second PB in 200m backstroke, and Ewan Carpenter achieving a 12 second PB in 50m breaststroke. Ewan had an outstanding day achieving four first place finishes in his 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Other podium finishes were Jelena Carpenter in the 50m back (3rd); Charlotte Smith in the 50m breast (3rd); Thomas Bignell finishing third in the 50m breast; Aleisha Pearson finishing third in the 50m back; and Nicholas Bignell finishing second in the 50m back, breast and free. The 75 target Sage Family, Kingcraig Motors shoot was held on Sunday in November. A total of 76 shooters attended the locally sponsored event which was held in conjunction with the Sage Martienson Memorial Team Shoot With a number of shooters all finishing with tied scores in the high grades there were plenty of shoot off’s to decide both winners and place getters. Three shooters Scott Crawford, Malcolm Whitehead and Danny Bellinger all produced a round of perfect scorers 25/25. Local shooters Malcolm Whitehead and Danny Bellinger both finished with a score of 70/ 75. Shooting off Malcolm Whitehead took out High Gun and Danny settled for 1st in AA. Gavin Dyson & Ron Rhook also had to shoot off for 2nd and 3rd after both finishing with 69/75. Gavin getting the better of Ronny on this occasion. In the C Grade event Tim Holmes 52/75 headed Corey Edwards 50/75 and Colin Chambers 44/75. Tash Bellinger 64/75 was once again too good in the Ladies event finishing ahead of Melanie Jones 51/75 and Vicki Fabris 38/75. The Sage Martiensen Team off the gun winners were Heath Telford, Daniel Lamb, Damien Earl and Craig Hill finishing with a total overall score of 248. In the handicapped event Matt Crook, Tim Widdison, Dylan Edwards and Corey Edwards finished with a combined score of 329. With only one month of the “local” teams aggregate event to go “Team Klieve” is still looking like the team to beat. Thomas Hynes makes running look easy and on Sunday he claimed his third successive Blue Lake Fun Run title, despatching any challengers with ease as he powered down Bay Road and across the Cave Gardens finish line 40 seconds clear of second placed Travis Hickman. The 17 year old appears to take only moments to catch his breath, unfazed by his incredible achievement. Thomas hit the headlines in 2012 when he became the youngest winner, setting a new race record in the process. That time was 35:23 - a time he eclipsed in 2013 when he returned to defend his title. Once again, he won in style, the Melbourne teenager, setting a new race record with a stunning time of 35:01. On both those occasions, Thomas beat home David Staehr. This year it was local Travis Hickman, who finished third behind Thomas in 2012, to settle for bridesmaid, with another local runner Dale Engler rounding out the open 10.4km podium in the men’s event. There was a local flavour in the women’s event with former local Belinda Richardson securing the victory in the 10.4km run. Daughter of former ABC presenter Alan Richardson and city council’s Denise Richardson, Richardson completed the course in 41: 58, more than three minutes ahead of second placed Sarah Edgar and third placed Thea Maxwell, a familiar face in musical circles and as a local football boundary umpire. Richardson was ninth overall. Millicent’s Ben Sims surprised even himself to take out the men’s 6.8km event, while 10 year old Caitlin Dyer eclipsed her older rivals to finish more than three minutes ahead of second ranked Tara Duncan, from Penola, and Rose John, in the women’s event. Dyer, too, has a local connection - she is the granddaughter of former Mount Gambier High School deputy principal Ian Gould. Glencoe football and tennis player Dylan Childs took out the 3.2km in the men’s section with Hannah Elliott, securing the women’s title. The over 50s men’s title went to Stuart McKinlay in what was an impressive performance that saw him finish nine minutes clear of any other competitor in his age group and fifth overall in the 10.4km journey.

After a flurry of centuries, the ball fights back Yahl’s Jon Clayton, North’s Matt McInerney and Jake Schutz, Penola’s George Kidman and West’s Jason McCrae have all reached three figures this season in Barber Shield action and event Butchart Shield batsman Ben McGregor also scored a century as it looked like a season where bat would dominate the ball. And then in the opening round of the One Day Cup. North’s Michael Johnston continued to the trend, anchoring Nor’ths innings with a century but the tide did start to turn with Mil Lel’s Garry Langford picking up a double hatrick and it seemed to inpsire the men with the ball who enjoyed a pretty good Saturday in Barber Shield competition. It was a topsy turvy round with games twisting and turning and at least two games look set for an outright result. And the best example of that was reigning Barber Shield champions South Gambier hosting new kids on the block Kongorong - the first time former South allrounder Alex Hentschke faced his former team mates after joining his brother and father at the Kongorong Cricket Club. South has enjoyed a strong start to the 2014/15 season and perhaps the reigning champs thought life without Hentschke wasn’t too bad. Well all that changed on Saturday as Mick Waters ripped through the top order and Hentschke cleaned up the middle order and tail as the two rangy paceman combined for all 10 wickets to consign South to an almost unbelievable 59. Five South batsmen failed to trouble the scorers with Hentschke heaping pain on his former team mates with 6/20 from 8.1 overs. Waters was equally impressive with 4/32 from his eight overs as Kongorong took just 16 overs to end South’s innings. Those that love the statistics of cricket, would certainly be running to the record books when South’s bowling attack also saw two bowlers share all 10 wickets - Robbie Drenthen finishing with 6/42 and David Somerfield with 4/17. But for the Hawks, the main thing is they banked first innings points, despite being dismissed for 80. South is 1/72 in reply and all that remains to see is what target Somerfield chooses to set the inexperienced Kongorong side in what will surely see an outright result. The Yahl-East Gambier clash also looks set for an outright outcome with the brown caps in the box seat. At 3/25, Yahl looked shaky and at 6/58 things didn’t look much better but a 50 run eighth wicket partnership between veteran David Pick (37) and rising star Brad Close (29no) saw Yahl rally nicely and post an unlikely but competitive 162. And sut as East would have been ruing letting Yahl off the hook, the Bulldogs further self-destructed with the bat and are at a precarious 7/23 from 16 overs with arguably the unbeaten Ben Clark the only hope of avoiding a swift, heavy outright loss. Early in the day both Jackson Lock (2/36) and Scott Allen (3/28) looked dangerous and looked set to rip through the Yahl line-up without much resistance but it took Clark to find a way through the dogged lower order - his 3/19 from 13.1 overs with eight maidens was pivotal. But East’s brittle batting of 2013/14 returned with a vengeance and it will fall on Clark again to hopefully resurrect the Bulldogs’ chances.Kalangadoo has its work cut out to chase down Penola’s 181 with Daniel Redman 36) and paceman Curt

Evans (40) emerging as the unlikely heroes in the absence of skipper George Kidman. Much like Yahl, Penola batted themselves into deep trouble before the lower order was able to turn things around. At 6/59, Kalangadoo had the upper hand but Redman and Evans combined for a 58 eighth wicket partnership which was boosted by a final wicket stand of 30 by Tom Williams and Steve Hill. West sit favourite in their clash with Mil Lel, restricting Mil Lel to 110 and sitting at 3/ 70 in reply. After an opening stand of 44, Mil Lel lost 10/66 as Bray Stephenson (3/27); Trent Badman (4/24) and Shane Dycer (2/31) bowled tightly to continually force Mil Lel’s bats into error.

Mount Gambier Karting Clubs final meeting for 2014 has been run and won at its Glenburnie Raceway complex. Local members, along with visiting drivers from Portland and Horsham, provided some exciting racing throughout the day as the yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s racing calendar came to a close. In the cadets class, Jobe Stewart was too quick for first time racer Parker Scott, winning all four heats convincingly, with Scott taking second overall, ahead of Portland driver Brocklan Parker. The rookies class standout was local driver, Troy Moreland, who continued his great form of 2014, faultlessly driving to a win in each heat giving him a solid points total. Junior national light was also an all Moreland affair, with brother Shane (above) clean sweeping the days race wins making it four from four over Portland driver Kobey Sheedy. The seniors sportsman light and heavy classes were both strongly contested with some of the best racing for the day. It was Horsham driver Ashley Lear who took the line honours in the light weight division ahead of Mount Gambier driver Bradley Saffin, with Matt Evans rounding out the podium. The sportsman heavy class was dominated by Kelvin Moreland, taking a win on each outing with his son Matthew also sharing in the placings, snaring third for the day. Portland driver Kevin Hitchcock took the middle step on the podium. With one more club event on the racing calendar for the 2014, the Glenburnie Raceway complex will host a nonpoints round on Sunday, December 7, with the club championship celebrations concluding the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s racing. The club also plans on unveiling a special presentation throughout the day and encourages all past and present members to attend the event and celebrate what will be a memorable and notable gesture of appreciation.
