an art out of nail care

In more than two decades there’s not much Tracy Norman hasn’t seen or experienced. Her 21 years in the industry has seen her operating her own business for the past four, adding Meaghan Stockwell to her team in 2012. Meaghan (pictured below left) had already worked in the beauty industry for 15 years, adding nail technician to her

resume in the last two years. Tracy Anne’s Nail Retreat specialises in Bio Gel sculptured nail enhancements , as well as French or colour overlays, with a choice of more than 100 long lasting, chip free, permanent nail colours. Gel overlay on toe nails is an alternative for summer fun, with a long lasting shine guaranteed. Manicures and pedicures are always available and Tracey Anne

(pictured below right) suggests treating yourself to some extra pampering with a paraffin wax treatment. “I have created a warm, friendly environment and atmosphere, always filled with laughter and fun, plus a great sense of humour enjoyed by all,” Tracy Anne said. “I have several families where I’ve been doing three

generations of clients. I have seen clients meet their boyfriends, become engaged, married and have their first child.” Tracy Anne’s clients range from 15 to 99 years and gift vouchers are available. “The best part of being a nail technician all this time is allt he girls I have worked with, the lovely ladies I have met and shared so much of their lives, and most of all,

Portland community on SHIPSHAPE. Upwelling Festival Arts Projects Coordinator, Susie Lyons, said that SHIPSHAPE and future festival art projects will be presented in the Street Parade and then on the foreshore. “We are so thrilled to have secured Australia Council for the Arts funding for the next three years in a highly competitive field,” Ms Lyons said. “It is really important for us to continue to deliver a unique high quality free event for Portland and arts funding means a guaranteed wow factor for the festival each year. “We see the street parade as a major platform for

community participation and already all Portland schools have signed up to participate in SHIPSHAPE. “It is exciting to be offering an opportunity where all schools come together as one in the parade.” SHIPSHAPE is a project incorporating portable sails and marine life sculptures which will come together in the street parade and will then be installed as a visual art backdrop for the main festival site. Designs will be drawn on silk, the silk dyed then stretched over the cane structures. Different groups will make separate elements that, when brought together for the parade, will create one large piece in the

form of a ship with sails, a ship’s body and flags. The project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. The Upwelling Festival was one of only three recipients Australia-wide to receive the three-year funding agreement. Workshops for SHIPSHAPE will be held in Portland in the month leading up to the festival. The Upwelling Festival will be held on Saturday, November 1, on the Portland Foreshore and planning for all elements are well underway. In its sixth year, the festival is based

on the theme of the Bonney Upwelling and is managed by the Rotary Club of Portland Bay. The Bonney Upwelling is the epic natural ocean occurrence that powers a seven month (November to May) feeding frenzy of tuna, crayfish, giant crabs, squid, fish, seabirds, seals krill and blue whales. Supporting an incredibly rich ecological food web, the upwelling is at its greatest off the coast of Portland and is the cornerstone of its lucrative local fishing and tourism industry. The free day time event on the foreshore celebrates what is unique about Portland and the community and show cases an important local environmental phenomenon. Wayne Viney – Singular Impressions

• Mount Gambier • Warrnambool • • Portland • Casterton • Hamilton • Naracoorte•

Singular Impressions surveys Melbourne artist, Wayne Viney’s responses to landscape over the past thirty years. Best known for his hauntingly evocative twilight studies, Viney masterfully draws upon the painterly potential of monotypes in his exploration of the pastoral tradition. This exhibition maps his transition from gestural drawings grounded in physical sites such as the Strathbogie Ranges and Yea, to his signature brooding monotypes of psychic landscapes, to recent colourband abstractions. Whether depicting the observed countryside of the Australian bush, or giving expression to the private vistas of an imagined scene, Viney imbues his images with a mood that is achingly sublime.

LOCAL Textile

artists in the spotlight

Mount Gambier Textile Artists Exhibition titled Bushland, Bull Ants and Bracken will be in the Cathleen Edkins Gallery at the Riddoch Art Gallery,

Mount Gambier, from June 25 to July 27, with the official opening this Friday from 6-8pm. Well known musician and textile artist Jennie

Matthews is the special guest speaker for the opening. Bernadette Clifford, Hilda Henderson, Glenys Hughes, Kay McDonnell, Julie Ann

McEwen and Peggy Schwartz share a passion for textiles, fibre and yarn, forming the group Creatrices in 2007. The group encourages and provides means for experimentation in textiles, fibre and yarn techniques. Creatrices’ priority is to improve the status of textiles as a contemporary art field and promote high standards of design and workmanship. Group exhibitions about every two years provide the vehicle. Creatrices have a focus on stepping away from traditional constraints towards using diverse techniques to create art wearables, contemporary visual art works and installations. Members attend local and national forums and workshops, some with well known international

tutors, aimed at developing new skills and techniques to visually express their ideas and thoughts. The art works for this current exhibition reflect the individual artists interpretation of Telford Scrub Conservation Park, just north of Mount Gambier. Over the past two years the artists have made regular visits, observing seasonal changes. The artist’s personal styles and individual techniques makes for a very diverse and inspirational exhibition. The visual elements of colour, line, shape and texture capture the pattern and rhythm of the bushland. Traditional techniques such as quilting, knitting, weaving, paper making, collage, basketry, embroidery, felting, painting and dyeing have

been used in a contemporary context. “Through art, we hope to encourage bushland

visitors to see familiar things differently and to more fully appreciate the natural world,” artist ulie Ann McEwen said. “Look up towards the forest canopy, down towards the under storey and the forest floor to discover the ambience and beauty of the Limestone Coast bushland.” Bushland, Bull Ants and Bracken ‘ will also be exhibited at the Bordertown Walkway Gallery during South Australia Living Artist Festival ( SALA) from August 1-26. The Landmark TonkinGeorge & Gambier Shooting Supplies 50 Target shoot was held late last month in cool blustery conditions. The shoot was again well attended with 92 shooters. This was the first round of the Lake Bonney Challenge and Burrungle shooters just managed to hold off their Lake Bonney rivals 301 to 291. The second leg of the Challenge to be held on July 20. The course certainly suited Ken Atkin as he showed of his class handling the conditions better than most finishing with 45/50 to take out High Gun. AA grade finished with a four way tie and was decided after a shoot off between Damian Earl, Mark Fabris, Ernie Scheidl

UFOs & Angels - A New Age Dawns If this information is correct, we are about to witness the most profound changes in human history. ACCORDING TO BENJAMIN CREME, the UFOs and the people in them are engaged on a spiritual mission to ease humanity’s lot and to save this planet from further and faster destruction. Our own planetary Hierarchy, led by Maitreya, the World Teacher, now living among us, works tirelessly with our space brothers in a fraternal enterprise to restore sanity to this Earth. CREME SHOWS HOW ALL THE PLANETS of our solar system are inhabited, but on physical levels beyond present human sight, the so-called etheric planes. The Spacecraft

are constructed on the same principle; they too are in etheric matter and have complete control of energies in space. Our space brothers are responsible not only for crop circles but also for preparing the way on Earth for a new technology of light which will give us unlimited power from the sun. In the power point presentation we will give a glimpse of the future, - HEALTH, drugs and surgery will no longer

be needed as doctors are trained in the new technology of light, TELEPATHY, man’s mind is an instrument by which the mental planes can be contacted, and on SHARING, when the goods are shared more equitably, half of mans problems will vanish overnight. HISTORY BOOK LAUNCH From the Casterton floods of 1906 to Portland’s 1985 royal visit, Glenelg Shire – 150 years in the Making is a first-of-its kind pictorial history of the entity Glenelg Shire, as it is today. While the respective pasts of many of the towns, districts and former muncipalities throughout the Shire have been recorded, this coffee table publication captures the history of Glenelg Shire, following the municipal amalgamations 20 years ago. The idea for this allencompassing history book was conceived by Council’s Heritage Advisory Committee several years ago, at a time when the 150th anniversaries of the formation of the former shires that make up today’s Glenelg Shire were approaching. To be officially launched on July 4 by Mayor John Northcott, the book will not only be a tool to celebrate the shire’s rich history and create a sense of where we are today, it will also be a method to futher promote the Shire’s economic and tourism potential, a presentation piece for civic occasions and a gift and lasting reminder for visiting dignitaries. The historic photographs in the book have mostly been drawn from the Shire’s Cultutral Collection, supplemented with images from other public and private collections in the Shire. Following the launch the book will be available from Council’s Customer Service Centres in Casterton, Heywood and Portland; Visitor Information Centres at Casterton; Nelson and Portland ; and from the Portland Library. A copy of the book will also be lodged with the libraries at Casterton, Heywood and Portland and be available for borrowing by the public. The book Glenelg Shire – 150 Years in the Making retails for $25.

Computer ergonomics for healthy vision It seems nearly everyone in this digital world is spending a lot of time in front of a computer, which can strain the eyes as well as other parts of the body. And anyone who uses a computer for prolonged periods whether on the job, at school or at home for enjoyment - is at risk for headaches, burning eyes, red eyes, a stiff neck and other symptoms that comprise computer vision syndrome (CVS). Here’s the good news: You can reduce computer-related discomfort by becoming more aware of your body during computer work and adjusting your workstation and viewing habits to avoid these problems. The key is something called computer ergonomics. What Is “Computer Ergonomics”? Ergonomics is the science of designing a job, equipment and/or workplace to fit the worker. The goal is to optimize the “fit” between each worker and his or her work environment to optimise performance and reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries. Computer ergonomics addresses ways to optimise your computer workstation to reduce the specific risks of computer vision syndrome (CVS), neck and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and other disorders affecting the muscles, spine and joints. Some experts in this field also use the term “visual ergonomics” when talking

Computer ergonomics for healthy vision about designing a computer workstation with the goal of preventing CVS. Computer and Visual Ergonomics: Tips You don’t need an expensive consultant to create a computer workstation that reduces your risk of stress, discomfort and potential injury. With better posture, this computer worker might avoid neck and back strain. Here are some of the top computer ergonomic tips recommended to reduce computer eye strain from prolonged computer use. 1. Sit so your head and neck are upright and in-line with your torso, not bent down or tilted back. 2. Face your computer screen directly. Avoid viewing your screen with your head turned or your back twisted. 3. Keep your elbows comfortably close to your body. 4. Use a chair that provides support for your lower back and has a cushioned seat with a contoured front edge. 5. Keep your mouse close to your keyboard so you don’t have to reach for it. 6. Position your computer display so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level. This will allow you to view the screen without bending your neck. 7. Adjust the position of your display to prevent reflections of overhead and outdoor lighting appearing on your screen. 8. Put your monitor close enough to your eyes so you can comfortably read text on

the screen without leaning forward 9. Use a hands-free headset when talking on the phone while working at your computer. 10. Also, adjust the height of your chair and desk so that: • Your upper arms are perpendicular to the floor, not stretched forward or angled backward • Your forearms, wrists and hands form a 90-degree angle with your upper arms • Your thighs are parallel to the floor and your lower legs are perpendicular to the floor • Your wrists and palms are not resting on sharp edges If you wear bifocals or trifocals, you should be able to comfortably view your computer screen without tilting your head back. If this is not the case, consider purchasing computer glasses. Following these tips will help you avoid stressful postures that lead to headaches, neck and back pain and computer vision syndrome. But remember, prolonged computer work — even at an ideal workstation — is stressful to your body and your eyes. Take a few minutes to stretch your arms and back, and let your eyes relax their focus by looking at something at least 6 meters away. Many experts, including optometrists who specialize in computer vision, recommend that you get up and move away from your computer for short breaks at least every 20 to 30 minutes. Hopefully these few tips will make your day at work, at least for your vision, stress free.

FUN... FUN...& more FUN... Keeping the kids entertained LOCAL Teaching Three local dog handlers adn their pets have been competing at the 2014 ANKC National Agility Trial in Brisbane, pitting thier skills against dogs from all over Australia and New Zealand. There are individual and team events with States within Australia and New Zealand having each entered a team comprising of six dogs and their handlers. 1000’s of agility runs will take place with dogs in all different levels and height classes. Mount Gambier’s Sarah McDowell and her dog Caliglory are part of the six dog team representing South Australia at the nationals. Sarah McDowell, Rebekah Foord and Janine Feil are also competing in the individual events with their dogs - all three are affiliated with the Blue Lake Obedience Dog Club in Mount Gambier. Sarah said that she was fortunate that she could train Cali on her own equipment at home and had been able to do an online agility handling course with a top internationally renowned handler from Canada, where

any dog new tricks

she gets advice and feedback on her training videos. Sarah said that Rebekah was also fortunate that most of her training was also done from home on her own equipment. “I guess that’s one advantage of living out of the city, being able to have the space,” Sarah said. “The travelling to and from Adelaide and Melbourne does take its toll, but it’s nice to come home to the peace and quiet.” Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. Consequently the handler’s controls are limited to voice,

movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal and coordination of the handler. In its simplest form, an agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles laid out by a judge in a design of his or her own choosing in an area of a specified size. The surface may be of grass, dirt, rubber, or special matting. Depending on the type of competition, the obstacles may be marked with numbers indicating the order in which they must be completed. Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human

direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs and handlers. Agility is a fast, exciting, fun activity for you and your dog. Agility involves competitors directing their dogs around obstacle courses in an attempt to both negotiate the obstacles correctly and ‘beat the clock’. The obstacles comprise various types of jumps, contact equipment, elevated walks,

It enables you to provide a release for the energy of your pet and yourself in a way that can be much more interesting and exciting than simply taking your dog for a walk. ADVERTORIAL I BIDETS2GO There are many questions surrounding bidets and bidet toilet seats. The main reason is because many people do not understand how they work or why they are beneficial to health, hygiene and general wellbeing. Here are some answers to some of the more frequently asked questions about bidets. What is a bidet? A bidet (pronounced “beeday”) is a unit designed to clean the rectal and genital areas using a jet or spray of water. The original bidet was a stand-alone ceramic unit that looked like a toilet but without flushing capabilities. Users had to finish using the toilet, then move to the secondary unit for cleaning. What is a bidet toilet seat? Bidet toilet seats, unlike the original bidet, are installed directly onto the existing toilet bowl, creating one single streamlined fixture rather than requiring two different units in the bathroom. This saves on space and cost while introducing a variety of new features that make going to the bathroom easier, more comfortable and more enjoyable. How does a bidet toilet seat operate? By turning on the water at the press of a button (on electric models) or by using adjustable knobs

Bidets and bidet toilet seats

(on non-electric models), you can wash yourself automatically. Electric models are also equipped with a drying function which blows warm air onto your skin, drying it before you leave the seat. Wiping becomes unnecessary as all of the cleaning functions are performed by the unit itself. What is the cost of a bidet toilet seat? Prices can vary significantly between non-electric and electric models, starting from around $100. Is a bidet worth the money? What is important to consider is that it is an investment towards good health and wellbeing. What are the benefits of using a bidet toilet seat? The use of a bidet can mitigate the onset of various health issues. A bidet can help to reduce inflammation caused by problems such as haemorrhoids and can help to improve genital and rectal health, making it a worthwhile investment. Moreover, it prevents hands from coming into contact with contaminants. Who can use a bidet toilet seat? Anyone can use a bidet toilet seat. It is of particular benefit to people with disabilities or special needs and to those who perhaps are finding it increasingly

difficult to remain independent. Bidet toilet seats work well for those who have a limited range of motion and/or struggle with cleaning as it eliminates straining and stretching. Unlike traditional bidets, an attachable bidet toilet seat does not require the user to traverse from one fixture to another for cleaning, making it easier for them to clean themselves with the added bonus of helping to retain their personal dignity, not to mention making it easier for carers. If you or someone you know fits into this category, an attachable bidet toilet seat may simplify the cleaning process greatly. A switch in personal hygiene habits can make a big difference to health. Unfortunately, many Australians have a real aversion to the idea of using a bidet. The idea of switching to a bidet for some may be difficult. However, the stark reality is that bidets actually clean the rectal and genital areas far better than toilet paper. Contemporary bidet toilet seats also offer much more flexibility and versatility than the traditional ceramic bidet. They are far easier to install and easy to remove. If you decide to move house you can remove the seat and take it with you. And if guests to your

home are uncomfortable using your bidet toilet seat, they can simply use the bidet seat as they would a regular toilet seat. There is a lot to recommend about these bidet toilet seats, but the clincher for many is affordability. Many people who can’t afford the expense of buying and installing a traditional bidet or don’t have the space, are surprised by the affordability of bidet toilet seats - a luxury that you can have for the sake of your personal hygiene. And for those who are still squeamish at the thought of using one: Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. You will wonder why it took you so long to make the healthier lifestyle upgrade.

ABOUT BIDETS2GO - NOW LOCATED IN MOUNT GAMBIER At Bidets2go we are all about offering consumers, health and aged care providers and other interested organisations advanced high quality lifestyle-upgrading bidet toilet seats and accessories. Following extensive research into available brands we chose Bio Bidet above all others due to outstanding design, quality and value for money among other things. As the Australian Distributor of the Bio Bidet brand we are very pleased to be offering sophisticated designed products to the Australian market. Whilst bidets are certainly not new, advanced bidet toilet seats are now an easy way to obtain the same and even better functionality than the conventional bidet by simply: • Replacing just the toilet seat; • Connecting the supplied hoses and T-valve into existing plumbing; and • In the case of the electric models connecting the plug to a powerpoint. Please browse our website at www.bidets2go.com.au to explore both our electric and nonelectric bidet toilet seats and also please view our Resources and Blog posts to get a better understanding of the great benefits of these devices.

Judges, Gretel Sneath, Kim Cella and Scott Davidson narrowed the field to two couples, Derek James and Meagan Pfeiler and Alisha Williams and Bronson Pfeiler, but required an additional performance of the Cha Cha to decide the outcome. In the hotly contested final, both couples impressed the judges, but it was Derek and Meagan who took out the coveted title and were crowned as the winners of the 2014 Swinging with the Stars. People’s Choice winner (awarded to the star who raises the most funds for the Stand Like Stone Foundation) was awarded to Georgie Hamlyn, who individually raised more than $13,000, which will be added to the foundation’s trust funds. Finalist Alisha Williams, from the Mount Gambier & District Community Bank, was second to Georgie with total funds raised of $11,700. The combined fundraising total for all 8 stars was $59,001, which surpassed last year’s total of $28,700 and is the largest amount raised in the history of Swinging with the Stars. Daryl Somers OAM of “Hey Hey it’s Saturday” fame accompanied by the Generations in Jazz Academy Band provided

the backing music for the dancers and entertained the packed Barn. With the proceeds of the charity auction, silent auction, and income from the evening, it is anticipated that the

total funds raised from the event could be in excess of $70,000. “This event has gone from strength to strength in recent years and it is a tribute to all involved that in its 7th year, Swinging with the Stars has reached another milestone,” Sue Charlton said. All funds raised for the Stand Like Stone Foundation are held in trust for the benefit of Limestone Coast communities. Above (top left) - Winners Derek James and Meagan Pfeiler in action.

motor Let us take the stress awa away

petrol pricing RAA’s Regional Fuel Ratings have gone relatively unchanged this month, with more than half of the monitored towns receiving ratings below average. RAA senior analyst Chris West said it’s disappointing to see so many towns continue to unfairly price fuel in regional areas. “During May, wholesale prices initially fell 3cpl over three weeks, but then rose 2cpl. Despite this drop most monitored towns did not pass on this wholesale price reduction and instead maintained a steady price pocketing the profits for themselves,” said Mr West. “Port Augusta is the exception to this, as their Petrol (4.4/5) and LPG (2.7/5) were rated the best overall and their diesel (3.6) rated third. “Both Riverland towns – Loxton and Renmark – continue to climb the rankings. Meanwhile Keith continues to tumble down the ratings ladder falling from third overall last month to 12th this month.” RAA is particularly concerned that many of the poor performing towns that are failing to pass on fuel price drops to motorists in a timely manner are located relatively close to Adelaide. “RAA’s fuel ratings measure whether fuel retailers pass on cost price reductions at the same rate as cost price increases, so it’s surprising that Coober Pedy – despite their overall higher price – is actually passing on petrol and diesel wholesale price reductions onto motorists faster than many other townships,” said Mr West. “For example Coober Pedy fuel retailers passed on the recent drop in petrol’s wholesale price better than Port Pirie, Kadina, Keith, Port Lincoln, Bordertown, Broken Hill or Ceduna. “Coober Pedy’s diesel rated better than 11 other towns and it was only due to its poor rating for LPG that prevented it from being higher in the overall ratings. “This is proof that even motorists in more remote townships can get access to reductions in wholesale fuel prices within 7-10 days, and that the fuel industry’s claims that price discrepancies due to distance or transportation can be dismissed including Broken Hill and Ceduna.”
