READING AGENCY—READING WELL Following on from World Book Night in March, the library has become more involved with the Reading Agency projects. 1) Mood boosting books: You have been asking for fiction books for some time now and we think that the moodboosting books are the best way of giving you these books. Mood-boosting books have been selected by readers across the country for their positive message or uplifting stories. The collection contains fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Some are very short so you can borrow them to read in your lunch break or on-call.

SUBSCRIPTION FEEDBACK WANTED It is clear from our usage statistics and conversations with members of the Trust community that you are not using our journals, even the ones you tell us are essential. What is less clear to us is why not? We would like you to take 5 minutes to answer these questions for us: 1)

Which journals do you think are essential in your specialty?

2)

Which do you think are not good value for money?

3)

What barriers do you face in accessing our journals?

This will let us buy more relevant journals next year We would like to hear from as wide a range of staff as possible, but especially non-clinical staff, AHPs and community teams. Click here to give us your answers or visit www.surveymonkey.com/ s/8CB8WPP

2) Books on Prescription: This programme provides lowlevel self-help books on a range of topics, such as stress, depression, OCD and anxiety. Any member of staff can borrow these using our self-service systems. Occupational Health & Well-Being staff will be able to prescribe these to staff who might benefit from these titles as well. NHS Choices have created a video on the Books on Prescription scheme which you can watch here or at http://readingagency.org.uk/adults/news/reading-wellbooks-on-prescription-film-released-by-nhschoices.html GP practice staff can prescribe books to their patients, who can collect them from their nearest public library. The library services of both Stockton and Hartlepool Councils are involved with the Books on Prescription scheme.

CURRENT AWARENESS FEEDS Keep up to date within your specialty by visiting the current awareness feeds on the library intranet (Sharepoint) pages at http:// tinyurl.com/nthlibraryinfo. If you do not see your specialty listed on the current awareness page, please contact us to request that it be added. Our current awareness feeds pull in updated news, contents tables and such like from the favourite sources within your specialty. If we subscribe to the content, clicking on the relevant link will take you directly to it or to the Athens log in page depending on where you are accessing it. If we don’t subscribe, you can request the article be sent to you— complete the article request form on the library intranet pages or if you are working off-site, email your request to medical.library@nth.nhs.uk. Drop in to the library or email to arrange a training session if you would like help on how to set up your own alerts and current awareness news feeds.

TOP TIPS FOR NOT GETTING OVERDUE BOOKS

MEDICAL MASTERCLASS

1) Make use of our eBooks via Clinical Key and Ovid—they don’t have due dates.

The RCP’s MRCP revision course Medical Masterclass is now available for candidates online as well as our popular revision books.

2) Press the “Receipt” button on the selfservice machine when issuing a book— then keep the receipt somewhere safe

Medical Masterclass online subscriptions let you take mock Part 1 and Part 2 exams as many times as you like.

3) Set a reminder in your diary or a productivity app (see box on right)

You can also compare your score to other users and see how you have done in each specialty that is covered in the exam.

4) Renew online, by phone or using the self-service machine—you can always ring or email to ask when your books are due. 5) Both Library & LRC are open 24/7. Return items via self-service any time.

Screencasts are also available on the PACES exams—describing each station, common cases and scenarios, and what the examiners are looking out for. Ask LIS staff to set up an account for you.

USEFUL TOOLS GUIDE I hope that this turns into a regular feature, with a different topic each quarter. This month’s guide is on productivity. IQTELL—Based on David Allen’s Getting Things Done (GTD) strategy, this app can sync your calendars and email accounts, list your actions and projects, and send handy reminders of approaching deadlines. Go on, you can get to Inbox Zero! Mendeley—Reference Management tool which lets you store, annotate and access references from anywhere. Join groups with similar interests and share your own publications. Download the desktop version to add citations directly into Word saving you time and effort. Android users search for Scholarley or Droideley for a mobile-friendly version. RSSDemon—RSS Feed reader to help you keep up to date with news, current events and opinions in your specialty and the wider world. Add a feed to your reader wherever you see this sign.

There are other productivity tools available, why not let us know your favourite on our Sharepoint discussion boards. LIS have no financial involvement with any of these tools and are not responsible for the content/security/accuracy of any tools.

In the next newsletter: tools for non-clinical decision-making.

DID YOU KNOW? When we remove out of date and unused stock from our catalogue, we send it to Better World Books. Better World Books is a company based in Dunfermline, Scotland. If they are not able to sell our old stock, then they recycle it responsibly. When they do sell our stock, they return part of the profits to us, and we use those profits to buy new books that we can loan out to you. They also donate part of the profits to our partner charity READ International. READ International is a studentled organisation which collects textbooks and other academic resources across university campuses and sends them to support literacy and teaching initiatives in Tanzania and Uganda.
