For forty-six years, thanks to the inspiration of its founders and the pugnacity of its successive directors, the Rencontres d’Arles has been — and will continue to be — at the side of the artists and sensitive to the public. For, like no other discipline, photography and its artists awake the gaze, provoke dialogue, and encourage encounters.

Hybridisation, contamination, confrontation, friction… photography reinvents itself through contact at the intersection of disciplines and movements. It continues to surprise us today with its ability to address issues — not solely artistic, but also social, cultural, and historical... The wellnamed photographic Rencontres (Encounters) multiply its impact, echoing and promoting artistic practices both historical and contemporary .

FESTIVAL? FESTIVAL! What is a festival? Neither a museum nor a trade show; the festival must escape this neithernor trap and constantly reaffirm its freedom. It is most itself in being multiform through the variety of its exhibitions, sites, and artists. This year photography will enter into the worlds of music, film, architecture, slyly reaffirming that it is often to be found where least expected! It is then up to our visitors individually to create their own experiences, to construct their own sequences of exhibits.

NIGHT OF THE YEAR NEW FORMAT

The Night of the Year is changing, opening itself to the diversity of artistic practices relating to the image. It displays our favourites of the past year and extends a carte blanche invitation to artists, institutions, and magazines. The Night of the Year features nine screens for some thirty projections. Your nocturnal stroll on the ninth of July will lead you from Trinquetaille to La Roquette and vice-versa, because for the first time the Night of the Year and the Night of La Roquette will take place the same evening, inviting you to a grand open-air celebration of images. And this year, our Night begins early! Come join us from 6 pm on, dine with us or have a drink accompanied by music, attend our concerts and explore the abandoned industrial setting of the Papeteries Étienne, open to the public for the first time. Musical programming by Silencio.

WINNER OF THE RENCONTRES D’ARLES 2015 DISCOVERY AWARD The LUMA Foundation has been the Discovery Award’s exclusive partner since 2002.

The LUMA Foundation backs art, photography, publishing, documentary film and multimedia projects by trailblazing independent artists and institutions. It is pleased to support the Rencontres d’Arles, especially the Discovery Award and the creation of the LUMA Encounters Dummy Book Award. The foundation is also delighted to present the exhibition Imponderable: Tony Oursler’s Archives in the Atelier des Forges at the Parc des Ateliers.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE 2015 PHOTO FOLIO REVIEW WINNER

IN THE LAND OF THE HEAD HUNTERS, A FILM BY EDWARD S. CURTIS, 1914 CINEMA-CONCERT BY RODOLPHE BURGER

This recently restored work, bordering on anthropological documentary, is a Native American version of Romeo and Juliet: Motana falls in love with the daughter of a rival tribe’s chief, but she is betrothed to a wicked sorcerer. Curtis goal was to lay low the stereotypes of Native Americans perpetuated by cinema. Rodolphe Burger score, based on rock and Native American music, makes the spellbinding dance of these time-travelling ghosts even more beautiful.

Olympus joyfully and closely accompanies the Rencontres d’Arles for the eighth year, a commitment that reasserts its support for photographers through the exhibitions of Paolo Woods and Gabriele Galimberti and the 3rd Olympus Photography Conversation. From 6 to 11 July, Olympus is delighted to invite you to the cour Fanton for Olympus Encounters and the Hôtel d’Arlatan to discover its loan counter.
