Keynote Topic #2 The Energy Challenges of the 21st Century by Dr. Carsten Evers

The world faces one of its toughest challenges: energy security and sustainability. The irreversible upward trend of global consumption has put enormous pressure on the world’s energy supply. While the path to sustainability will clearly be provided by renewable energy, non-renewable sources like oil, gas and coal will remain to be an indispensable fuel that will keep the world’s economy up and running at least in the next decades. Striking a delicate balance in the global energy mix becomes imperative. At the rate the world’s energy consumption is growing, there is a huge investment requirement to bring in additional renewable capacities at the same time increase efficiency levels of conventional energy conversion. In this manner, the 2009 Copenhagen Commitment on keeping low the climate impact will be more meaningful, doable and realistic. Conventional power and energy sources will provide the necessary transitional shift towards global energy security and sustainability. Appropriate technologies are available for countries to adapt and replicate. There is also a need to heighten global consciousness on the importance of accountability and responsibility in the context of ensuring sustainability and even survival of humanity. Responsible consumption is as important as responsible production. Best practices on the triple bottom line concept of PPP (Profit, People and Planet) are abundantly available and can provide the inspiration for world to emulate. The academic and research sector also play crucial roles in providing impetus to the continuing search for viable solutions at the same ensure a continuing growth of the human capital who will take on the responsibility of meeting the challenges of the future.
