Program Updates 2013/2014 Applications are currently being accepted We are currently accepting applications for all PhD & Research-based Masters Programs for the 2013-2014 cohort! The early application deadline is January 15, 2013. We will continue to accept qualified applications after this date based on space availability in the program. To date, we have received over 1,300 inquiries about our programs from applicants across the globe.

On the inside pages of this bulletin, you will find some demographic statistics on each of the SBE PhD & Research-based Masters Programs. The statistics represent the current cohorts’ profiles, providing the breakdown of gender, citizenship and education background. The stats demonstrates the diversity of students in our programs.

We would like to welcome aboard the new Program Co-ordinator for the SBE PhD & Research-based Masters Programs, Amanda Kristensen. In addition, we would

like to thank Winona Phachanla for all of her hard work and various contributions to the office over the past few months.

Congratulations MSc’12 graduates!

MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN MANAGEMENT Lu Gao | Annika Hillebrandt | Sheng Gao | Teodora Trifan Annika Hillebrandt MSc’12 | PhD Student

Congratulations to Annika who was the recipient of the Gold Medal for Academic Excellence! This award celebrates Annika’s outstanding achievements in the MSc in Management: OB/HRM program.

Her Major Research Paper analyzed how observing others’ emotions can influence an employee’s own fairness perceptions in the workplace.

Annika is now in the PhD in Management: OB/HRM program.

Emily (Lu) Gao, who completed her MSc in Management: Supply Chain Management, is currently working at Lalvani Logistics Inc. as a Modelling Optimization Specialist.

Teodora Carmen Trifan has joined the PhD in Management: OB/HRM program. Her current research is a continuation of her MSc major research paper, investigating whether disappointment mediates the relationship between unmet expectations and organizational outcomes. She is pursuing her research with professors Amy Christie and Greg Irving.

Laleh Samarbakhsha

GSA President & CEO, PhD Candidate Laleh Samarbakhsha was recently elected as the President and CEO of the Graduate Students Association (GSA). Laleh comes from an active background, serving several previous positions with the GSA: Vice President of External Affairs, Vice President of Finance, and as a member of the Board.

We are pleased to announce the start of the first Master of Finance non-coop cohort! Students in the non-co-op stream will complete three terms of study throughout the 12 month program.

We currently have four students in the program and expect it to grow in 2013.

DOCTORAL DISSERTATION NEWS

The 2012-13 Masters of Finance: co-op cohort will begin their first semester of coop placements in Winter 2013!

Tannaz Mahootchi, a doctoral student in Operation and Supply Chain Management, successfully defended her dissertation proposal in November entitled: “Modeling and Analysis of Value-based Healthcare Delivery.” Her proposal examines the value-based steps to create an effective and high quality healthcare delivery system.

John and Ann Weir Masters in Economics Scholarship This award recognizes the academic excellence of students entering the Master of Arts Business Economics program and was established by the late Dr. John Weir (President Emeritus, WLU and Chair of the Economics Department, 1968-1978), his wife Ann and their family. The Weir awardees for Fall 2012 are Nicholas Corvari, Sundip Dhanjal, Sivakanthan Karunakanthan, and Susanne Luong.

John Finlay Memorial Scholarship Zainab Khan is the 2012 award winner and she will finish the MABE program at the end of this year. This award is given to a MABE candidate who achieves the highest overall grade point average exceeding 10.0 at the end of the second semester of the normal program.

MABE Student Representatives: EMTM PROGRAM UPDATES Congratulations to the first cohort of the Executive Masters in Technology Management (EMTM) graduates with their Masters of Science degree in Management. The first cohort completed the part-time, 11-month program created for leaders who manage technological innovation. Among the graduates are directors, vicepresidents and managers from Desire2Learn, Research in Motion and Christie Digital.

As a graduate management degree for executives, EMTM focuses on strategic management of technology and innovation and we are continuously attracting leaders with diverse backgrounds. The next cohort is scheduled to start in September 2013.
