HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL’S SUMMER OF FUNDRAISING RAISES OVER £28,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK eading residential agency, Hamptons International announced today that it has raised over £28,000 for Cancer Research UK this summer. The Hamptons International Grand Prize Draw, participation in the Vitality British 10k London Run and two separate auctions for VIP sporting experiences all contributed toward this phenomenal fundraising total. The Hamptons International Grand Prize Draw which took place throughout the month of July was open to customers, colleagues and friends. his week I'm on holiday with my young family and today we took a cable car up to 1,600 metres high in the French Alps. We enjoyed spectacular views of snow capped mountains touching the sky and the towns in the valleys below. My kids loved the excitement of the ride on the cable car, and we all loved the views; "wow" they said! My trip today had many parallels with the i360 experience: On the i360 you will journey up into the sky in a "vertical cable car" and enjoy breathtaking views of natural beauty (the Downs, chalk cliffs and sea). Even the cable car we rode on today was made by Poma, the company building the i360. The architects of the i360 and London Eye (David Marks and Julia Barfield) have described the vision for the i360 as, "there is a universal desire to get up high to enjoy a good view" and I couldn't agree more. Whenever I go to a new city, my first port of call as a tourist is always to go to the place to see the best views. Some of my personal favourites have been the cable car up Table Mountain in Cape Town or cable car to Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio de Janiero. Like the i360 these experiences combine a ride to heights with views of natural beauty, the sea and a city. Closer to home, in six years of working at the London Eye and around 500 rides, I never got tired of the views or the thrill of riding up so high. My favourite time was to go up in the evenings for a champagne ride, and this was the inspiration for the i360 Sky Bar. My most memorable ride was a Concorde fly past to celebrate the Golden Jubilee. My kids also love the Spinnaker, especially the glass floor, and the Emirates cable car between the O2 and Royal Docks. We believe Brighton too has wonderful views to be discovered. On a clear day from the i360 you will be able to see 26 miles from Bexhill to Chichester. I cannot wait to experience it! he statue of Queen Victoria at the foot of Grand Avenue in Hove was erected as a celebration of her Diamond Jubilee of 1897. It was unveiled in 1901, after her death, which meant that wreaths were placed around the covered statue prior to its exposure. The project was carried out by Thomas Brock, a famous sculptor whose previous work included the relief of the widowed Queen Victoria on coins from 18931901. Brock became ‘Sir Thomas’ when he was knighted, apparently on the spot by King Edward VII, following the completion of the huge Victoria memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. I met Bob Colwell and Alan Craig of London-based PAYE Conservation (whose previous projects include work at St Pancras Station, Windsor Castle and Cliveden House) who had just finished pressure-washing the entire structure. The application of wax is all that was left to do. A scaffold was a great opportunity for photographs. At two levels up, it is clear that many features exist on the statue that are not easily spotted from below. In Queen Victoria’s left hand is an orb that is topped by a winged figure denoting victory which bears a passing resemblance to the nearby Peace Statue (also in the process of being cleaned incidentally). In the other hand is a sceptre. The statue is made of bronze and its plinth of granite and marble. Each side of the plinth features an inlaid bronze tablet with Science and Art, Education, Empire and Commerce represented to the north, east, south and west respectively. It won’t be long before maquettes of the three winning designs for the proposed new Hove Plinth, intended for the promenade nearby, are released. This Hove Civic Society initiative has attracted nothing but quality entrants. Standards in the area were already high after all. www.buildingopinions.com

They are among the 25 latest lots in the county being sold by regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson. Starting at 11am, the auction takes place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, on Thursday, September 17. Richard Payne, auctioneer, said: "Buy-to-let continues to appeal to investors in Britain's record-low interest rate environment, as does competitively-priced family homes and commercial property. "According to figures from the HomeLet Rental Index, the average rent in the South-East in the three months up to May 2015 was £940, with average rental values up 9.4 per cent." Two detached houses, with planning permission for ten flats following demolition, have a freehold guide price of £480520,000 and are at 45 and 47 Barnhorn Road, Bexhill. It's not every day you get the opportunity to own your own road, but that's exactly what's on offer in Peacehaven. Guided freehold at £35-45,000, Wheatland Close, Telscombe Cliffs, is a cul-de-sac with an adjoining piece of land. Richard said: "This is the first time a private road has come up for sale locally with us in many years and we anticipate keen interest from bidders. You wouldn't be able to put up a toll but it's certainly a talking point when you have the neighbours over to dinner."

Victoria Wright of local solicitors Dean Wilson LLP discusses taking on an employee Tips not declared to HMRC and loss of employment rights A café worker in Scotland had his employment tribunal claim struck out due to the failure to declare tips he had earned to HMRC. The worker had been sacked and he wanted to claim unfair dismissal. Some of the tips were declared on the payslip, but there was a system in place whereby less was declared than was actually earned. Although many people pay by debit or credit card, some cash transactions still take place; and some people will pay by card and tip in cash. HMRC say that all tips and gratuities received by taxi drivers, postmen, hairdressers, waiters, etc., in respect of services they have provided are taxable as

earnings. They must therefore be declared. HMRC says it needs to be informed as soon as possible if you have made money you need to pay tax on. This could have happened because you: did not realise you needed to tell HMRC about it; were not sure how to declare it; or did not declare it because you could not pay. HMRC says that if you contact it first, it may consider your case more favourably. Undeclared income can result in penalties and criminal prosecution. Not only that, as the café worker found out, there are other consequences besides falling foul of the tax man. If the contract of employment is being performed

illegally and the employee knows of this and participates in it; the contract is rendered unenforceable. The result is that the employee cannot then make claims for unfair dismissal, breach of contract or deductions from wages. The outcome is that even if he was unfairly dismissed, the café worker is not now able to pursue his claim as the tribunal and courts will not assist someone who relies upon their own immoral or illegal act. There is therefore a potential for unscrupulous employers to have their employees agree to some form of illegal or immoral act from which they appear to benefit (such as payments without proper deductions) and then to rely upon that illegal act to defeat any claim the employee tries to bring.
