Brighton’s first ever Chicken Run “We needed more chicken outfits!” Not something one often hears when evaluating their fun run event. Well, that is exactly what happened for James MacDonald, organiser of the first ever Brighton Chicken Run. Benefiting from the early Easter frivolity are a number of charities including the Martlets Hospice, Pass it on Africa and The Honeypot Children’s Charity. Hove Park is used to early morning joggers, but on Sunday morning, the path was swarmed by over 160 chickens taking part in the 5km race. To be more specific — 140 people in chicken suits.

he once-humble garden shed is currently enjoying a revival – but in unexpected ways. Higher property values mean that space inevitably continues to attract a premium, and imaginative householders are cashing in on this by maximising every square inch of space. Recently Harrison James have created a building for a client in Thames Ditton which is specifically used as an office for a computer hardware and software support company. This is a truly bespoke building out of neccessity. The client’s garden was an awkward shape and the building had to fit perfectly into the corner of his small terraced house’s garden.

ith an increasing number of us working on short contracts or as freelancers, working from home is becoming the option of choice. But do we all have the luxury of free space that can be dedicated to being used as a home office? The answer could well be yes. Domestic space comes at a price these days and few of us will have a home that has an available room that can be used as a dedicated office. That can often mean cramming a desk into the corner of your living space or even a bedroom or kitchen – hardly ideal when you need peace to be able to work. Harrison James have come up with a solution for one client who needed just that. You may well remember seeing them on these pages quite recently. They are the team that build those rather smart garden buildings, the ones that helped you shed the idea of garden sheds. There is in fact only one right angle in the whole building, with a curved back wall and the whole thing meets at a point by the back gate. They really did have to maximise the amount of available space he had. At the same time it had to look good and with aluminium bi-fold doors opening on to a composite deck, an environmentally friendly product made from recycled carrier bags, which they also built it really does have style. “The deck looks great and will never rot or fade and it really does add to the success of the whole build. Our client is delighted with the result and loves his new office”. And so he should, the level of design input and technical excellence is second to none. This 9.2 square metre building has an EPDM rubber roof and is fully insulated. The exterior is clad in Canadian red cedar and it has aluminium bi-fold doors. Inside the interior is plastered and painted and there is an oak effect laminate floor. There is aPart P certificated mains electrical connectionwith eight double sockets, ten spot lights and the main IT hub has three cat 6 cable points along the desk. There is also co-axial cabling for TV and an alarm system. Outside the composite decking is illuminated by exterior LED lights in the step. So how complex was the job? “Well we had to remove the existing decking that was in the garden before starting work on the building. Once that was done the whole job took only three weeks from start to finish. Possibly less time than arranging a lease on an office and certainly less time than you would need to buy one. There was absolutely no disruption to his house and to his family and as he was working from home already, no disruption to his business. All in all it was huge success for him and for us”. Clearly Harrison James are not only great at building these garden rooms, let’s not mistake them for sheds, but beyond that build quality they are great at coming up with solutions for even the most complex and difficult of situations. A Harrison James garden room can be seen as a great solution when extra space is required but you have no desire to move and when it comes to use they are so flexible. As we can see here as a

This house has always been the heart of Beaunay village. Many marvellous things have happened here. My beautiful neighbours have been married for over 70 years. They are nearly 100 and are still going strong. They told me that before the war The Lodge was a ballroom venue with a huge enclosed pergola in the garden. This classified Grade A listed heritage village is protected from any development. The house is the centrepiece of this picturesque valley and directly overlooks the most attractive ancient church. With approximately just 20 houses, the village incredibly has its own school and town hall, which both operate wonderfully. Directly opposite there is the Barons Family Chateaux, just visible through the woods, part of the incredible family estate we are allowed to walk around. Their estate boasts the largest working thatched barn in Europe. Also, 2km away is the oldest oak tree in France. When I saw this extraordinary estate and saw this truly amazing place I knew straight away that I had to have this house.

M

y story is a sentimental yarn of a passionate sailor, sailing off to new horizons, an amazing house, which in time became a formidable teacher. Epic adventures have taught me to find peace within. Who says houses are not sentimental? It all began here in Brighton, in the winter of 2001, on the stormy seas of the south east coast. I had taken it upon myself to have an adventure, I had bought a sailing boat with £1,000 and zero sailing experience. I decided to brave the stormy November seas of the English Channel, not knowing where it would lead to, setting off in the rough direction of The Mediterranean. I remember the look of fear on loved ones faces, I still recall one or two wondering if they would ever see me again. I was not sure myself, I just knew I wanted to go south. After a scary few days in the English Channel I was most relieved to find the enchanting French port of Honfleur, jewel of the Normandy coast, and I imeediately fell in love with this rustic charming part of the world. Onward south I set my course, up along the magical river banks of the Seine, delighted to embrace Paris. Little did I know that I was on my way to becoming ‘The Painting Pirate’ and even more fantastically, a father, not to mention master to ‘The Lodge’, an amazing sixbedroom country house, which would become host to a retreat centre for art and yoga, eventually bringing me an inner peace that my wild, reckless heart could only have dreamt of at that time. My career is now taking me overseas once more, as my path calls. My voyage of discovery begins its second part. Meanwhile, The Lodge requires a new master – custodian to helm and skipper this amazing house onwards to its next adventure.
