L7 CONTENTS EDITOR’S NOTE he last time I tried to make my own jewellery, I was a bit ambitious – the resulting necklace came apart during an enthusiastic drinks order in a restaurant, and my wild gesticulation flung the pieces into the bread bowl of the family sitting next to us. They were very understanding. But that’s the last time I use my teeth instead of pliars to tighten fiddly jewellery clasps. This is why I am so in awe of events like the Brighton Craft Fair, which showcases a bounty of handmade pieces from local jewellers and craftspeople – I’ll try to contain my envy at their skills, and just pick myself up something nice at this year’s event. For more on what’s lined up, see page 19. The Brighton Art Fair also visits the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange this September, so if

you’re a trader, art-lover or artist yourself, you’ll have to swing by to immerse yourself in the best of local talent. See page 13. DO YOU NEED TO RETUNE YOUR TV? Latest TV launched on 28 August on Freeview Channel 8 and Virgin Media 159 In most cases, you will not need to retune your set to receive Freeview Channel 8, the new local TV channel for your area. If Latest TV did not appear on 28 August and you live in the Brighton & Hove, and Adur & Worthing area, then please follow these instructions for retuning your set. If you have difficulty then please contact us on 01273 818150 ext.101 or visit http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/howtoretune /retuning_instructions

Full retuning A full retune should only take a few minutes and can be done with your remote control. Here are some guidelines for how to do it, but bear in mind every model of digital TV or box will be a little bit different. 1 Make sure your Freeview TV or box is on and in digital mode, usually by pressing the DTV or digital button on your remote. Then press ‘menu’. 2 Select the ‘set up’ or ‘installation’ option. If you see picture icons, select the tool box, satellite dish or spanner. If you are prompted for a code, try 0000 or 1234.

Channel 8 is the new TV channel across the UK featuring local TV content.

3 Select the full retune option. This is sometimes called ‘first time installation’, ‘factory reset’, ‘default settings’ or ‘shipping conditions’. Do not select ‘channel update’ or ‘add channels’. 4 Press ‘OK’ if your equipment asks if you want to delete all your channels. Don’t worry, this is normal. Channels will automatically be installed. This may take a few minutes and your equipment may shut down and restart.

PEOPLE

Artwave Open House Festival, The BHYC ‘Copper Collective’

ARTWAVE OPEN HOUSE FESTIVAL 2014 Geoff Stonebanks and Mark Glassman from the award winning Driftwood garden in Bishopstone clocked 965 visitors at the festival this summer, who came to see 16 artists’ stunning work set against the beautiful canvas of the gardens. Over the period of the festival, they sold an incredible £10,042 worth of art. Geoff commented: "This is staggering when you compare to previous years sales, and is virtually double what we did in 2013.” They also sold an amazing £1,000 worth of home made tea and cakes, served in the garden on trays in vintage china. Proceeds from these went to Macmillan Cancer Support, for whom Geoff is a registered fundraiser. Visitors were very generous, and donated £540 during Artwave and spent £870 on raffle tickets. The money raised will help build The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, which will offer all round support for people affected by cancer in a calm, friendly and welcoming environment. More details of Geoff’s garden exploits and fundraising challenges can be found on his website: www.driftwoodbysea.co.uk

THE COPPER COLLECTIVE

A group of eight youth organisations, collectively called The Brighton and Hove Youth Collective, launched their fundraising campaign this week, creatively titled ‘The Copper Collective’. They are asking everyone in Brighton and Hove to collect up all their copper coins from around the house, office, car, shop or garden shed, bag them up and then hand them in to venues who are helping to collect across the city. It is hoped that over the next few months, The BHYC will have collected in most of Brighton and Hove's errant copper coins. The money can then be put towards the worthwhile activities and services that help support young people across the city. Although The BHYC do receive central funding, this only provides basic support, and more help is needed. If you’re interested in donating, visit www.brightonandhoveyouthcollective.org.uk or if you wish to act as a Collective Collection Point, email hello@brightonandhoveyouthcollective.org.uk

Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat hails the virtues of Freedom Leisure sports facilities Eighteen months ago we introduced a Leisure Card scheme in the city to help those on lower incomes access our Freedom Leisure sports facilities at a discount. Since then, almost 1,300 people in the Brighton and Hove area have signed up to take advantage of the 40% discount on a range of activities. The most popular facilities have been the swimming pools and gyms. The discount card scheme is means-tested and is open to people who are in receipt of certain benefits, including those with disabilities and looking for work. Research has shown that about a third had not previously used leisure centres at all, but 90% now visit at least once a week. In total they’ve made over 34,000 visits to our six local leisure centres, which is a huge step towards better health. The scheme wouldn’t be possible without the support of Freedom Leisure, the social enterprise that provides these services at council-owned facilities. Combined with the free swimming we provide for under-16s and the multimillion-pound refurbishment of Withdean Sports Complex, the city has better, more affordable sports facilities. Not only does this improve the health of the city’s poorest residents, it also saves the city money in the long term by reducing future health costs. According to the NHS, physical activity helps prevent many common major illnesses – including cutting the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. It’s brilliant to see the Leisure Card scheme working so well and I encourage all residents who are eligible to take up this scheme.

LATEST BRIGHTON & HOVE NEWS FRANK LE DUC THE VOTE

Property developers are being invited to take part in a beauty parade with the King Alfred as the winner’s prize

he prospect of a new seafront leisure centre on the King Alfred site is about to move another step closer. Property developers are being invited to take part in a beauty parade with one of Brighton and Hove’s seafront pearls as the prize. At stake is the chance to build a gym, sports halls and swimming pool. The chances are that it will be a 25-metre pool although plenty of people believe that this is our best chance to have a 50metre competition pool like the K2 in Crawley. If pools are a potential financial drain, the reward comes in the form of 400 flats – the enabling development. The public spaces are paid for from the profits of new homes, with high hopes that 40% of those homes will be for poorer people on the council waiting list. Inevitably, hundreds of flats – several storeys high – will attract local and vocal opposition. They will also attract investors. At a developers day last November, 65 people went along for 40 organisations as part of 29 teams. In the coming months a shortlist of two, three or even four

T

Key decisions are unlikely to be finalised this side of the elections next May companies or consortiums is likely to be drawn up and whittled down until a preferred partner is picked. Among the names in the frame is Cathedral, the company behind the scheme at the old fruit and veg market on Circus Street, Brighton. The scheme was granted planning permission last week. Cathedral is also working with the council on plans for Preston Barracks in Brighton. Another potential developer – with strong local roots – is Rob Starr, from Hove. After leaving school he started an insurance business from scratch and turned it into one of the country’s leading

brokerages. His vision is for an integrated arts and leisure centre known as The Lyrics. He has learnt from others’ mistakes and already shared his plans widely, carrying out considerable early consultation. This is not the first time that Brighton and Hove City Council has tried to tackle the dilemma of the King Alfred. Frank Gehry, the architect who designed the widely lauded Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, was involved in the last attempt, led by local developer Karis. The £300 million scheme included more than 700 flats. Planning permission was granted but the credit crunch and a changing political climate locally put paid to the project. Feelings ran high on both sides of the debate. The experience may well have coloured the careful approach being taken this time. A cross-party group met just over a fortnight ago and an update was presented to the council’s Economic Development and Culture Committee last week. Some suspect key decisions are unlikely to be finalised this side of the elections next May. But the foundations are being put in place. A project spec is ready to discuss with developers. It’s not set in stone. There is still pressure from some for an Olympic-size pool and from others for a destination in keeping with our seafront string of pearls. To mix metaphors for a moment, there is a risk that the end result will be neither fish nor fowl. The council is also aware of the knock-on effects of building 400 homes on the site. At one of Rob Starr’s consultation events, it was summed up by one of those attending, who said: “The elephant in the room is transport links.” Council officials are taking a fresh look at how people move along the seafront between Shoreham Harbour and Brighton Marina. There is at least one more elephant in the room in the form of school places. Demand will be even greater if the council HQ at nearby King’s House is converted into housing, and hundreds of homes in the area around Hove Station are built. One solution may be to put housing on the King Alfred site and build a pool somewhere else – perhaps near the station or on the Sackville Trading Estate. It would complicate the picture and delay the date on which the first spade hits the ground, but may ensure a prize-winning result.

This week’s headlines from across the city

BIN HERE BEFORE The bin strike is not necessary – that is the view from council chiefs after yesterday’s industrial action. Staff at Brighton and Hove City Council’s Cityclean took action last week, with unions claiming that some workers were not getting paid what they deserved. But speaking to Latest TV, Geoff Raw, the council’s executive director, hit back and called for unions to be more realistic in their claims. Residents will be hoping there is not a repeat of last year, which saw waste pile up in the streets. ALL CHANGE It's all change on the train lines. Last week, Govia took over the running of all services on the Brighton to Bedford line. Next year they will take over Southern services too. Some have already noted that the merging of services will see cheaper ticket prices wiped off. Latest TV's James Dunham looks at what this will mean for you – the humble but forever grumbling passengers. HERO TEEN A Brighton teenager who tackled an arrested man on the run from officers is considering a career in the police. Sixteen-year-old Kiya Ingham was walking home from an exam when he saw a topless man push

two police officers to the ground and attempt to escape. But the teen sprang into action and tackled the man as others simply walked by on Lewes Road. After he helped police detain the man, officers praised him for his incredible bravery.

Latest TV's James Dunham went along to meet the teen hero. PARKING CLAMPDOWN Drivers who park on pavements and verges near schools, putting children’s safety at risk, could receive on-the-spot fines. Brighton and Hove City Council is about to start the second phase of its “multi-agency initiative to target inconsiderate driving in areas around four city schools”. Next month, the council and officers from Sussex Police will be out and about in the streets around schools where poor parking behaviour has been reported. You've all been warned. SCHOOL’S OUT FOR HEADTEACHER A former school governor says he has the upmost confidence in the investigation into a suspended head teacher.

James Fox has been placed on leave from Portslade Aldridge Community Academy. This is while an investigation into pupil registration is carried out. But Peter Kyle, a former governor at the school, believes the issue will be resolved shortly at little detriment to pupils and the wider community. LICENSING FOR LANDLORDS? Brighton and Hove has one of the biggest private rented sectors in the country – with more than 30,000 homes leased out. But with some complaining the properties are rented out in a poor condition, some politicians and campaigners are calling for owners to be licensed. The issue certainly polarised opinion, with the issue being discussed in front of the Latest TV cameras by estate agents last week. Some believe the move will drive up standards, but others think it will purely pass the buck onto already hard-pressed tenants. MARCH OFF Nationalists behind the March for England have revealed they will not be returning to Brighton next year. The St George's Day protest and counter-demonstration normally attracts thousands of people. But it has come under criticism for the disruption caused to local businesses and residents. This year's policing bill is believed to have topped five hundred thousand pounds. Nationalists said they were taking the protest to a northern seaside resort for 2015. CAR TO WATER

Is it a boat? Is it a car? Well, it's a little bit of both. Say hello to the amphibious car, the creation of Dan Boot-Handford. What was originally just a bit of fun turned very quickly into a charity challenge. And this Sunday just gone, Dan took the boat down to the River Adur and attempted to navigate it a mile downstream. Marina Life Kirsty Pollard on The Rockinghorse Dragon Boat Race he Rockinghorse Dragon Boat Race takes place here this Sunday 28 September in the inner harbour, Marina Square, with the action kicking off around 10am. The dragon boats are 12 metres long and decorated in traditional dragons’ heads, tails and drums. Each boat will have 12 -16 paddlers who will provide their vessel power, a drummer to beat a steady rhythm, and helm to steer. The dragons then race against each other for victory in what will be a spectacular energetic display. Teams from across the city including Santander, City Cabs, Lloyds Bank and DYN are all competing for the crown of ‘Brighton Marina Rockinghorse Champion 2014’. Spectators will be able to see all the action from the viewing platform located along the undercliff walk.

T

There will be a bouncy castle, face painters, a children’s tombola and lots more to keep the little ones entertained in the square, while the adults enjoy the fabulous racing as well as the bars and restaurants available within the Marina. Proceeds raised at this fundraising event will support the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) based in Brighton, and continued supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit. Rockinghorse raise money for life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment while ensuring that children are treated in an environment better suited to their needs. here is a study out, trying to figure out “why lesbians tend to be overweight”, and it is totally misdirected. It isn’t lesbians who tend to be plump, it is good cooks, and who was the best cook ever? Answer: Your mother. No one in the world made better macaroni and cheese, or apple pie. When your mum made you breakfast, no restaurant could match it, and certainly your dad couldn’t do much at the stove except for an outdoor barbecue, or one fancy company dish like his famous crab cioppino. The obvious truth is that it isn’t lesbians who have to fight their weight, it is anyone – male, female, straight or gay – who loves to cook. If you have a way with food, you are going to taste what you create … and those itty-bitty spoonfuls of chocolate custard or Alfredo sauce go straight to the hips. Look at our own darling, Andrew Kay. He has never cooked for me (yet) but he knows good food. He savors the texture, recognises the bouquet of herbs and spices, and respects dramatic cuisine. His silhouette is certainly not angular; it is just round enough. For my part, I refuse to go to a skinny person’s house for dinner. I am not going to waste a meal on someone who doesn’t present each dish with a bit of flair and an eye for flavour. I made that mistake only once. A woman who shall remain nameless, in case she figures out why I am always busy at dinnertime when she calls, invited me over for a gala holiday celebration. She was the type who spent mornings at the gym, bench-pressing hundreds of pounds. Afternoons she worked out on the trampoline, and evenings she did Zumba. The truth is I should have known what to expect. I appeared, wine in hand, with an empty, expectant tummy and what did I see? Pizza delivered from the corner shop, pre-sliced mass-produced bread, and instant coffee. I know you won’t believe me, but the only spread available was Marmite. There wasn’t even background music to hide the gagging of the guests. I immediately feigned a headache and hustled over to the nearest Waitrose for a gourmet experience. Dinner is a terrible thing to lose … especially if you skipped lunch. So I am campaigning for people to stop casting negative aspersions on corpulence. Give me someone with a decent amount of curves and a good wiggle to their walk and I will immediately lobby to share a meal with them. If you are lean, buff and tanned I would not dream of touching your soup, much less your flambé cherries jubilee. Show me a comfy, well-padded cheerful person in a flowered apron and I am right there at her dinner table. I promise to bring the wine. “Thin people are beautiful, but fat people are adorable.” - Jackie Gleason

STEPPING UP Richard Shayler: it’s all a game of ladders ... Has anyone seen the ladder?” Silence. “Nobody?” More silence. I heard an inaudible whimper from Gemma, the dutiful runner ... “It’s in the downstairs cupboard, isn’t it Gemma.” Again, another whimper, this time a little more audible. The answer, as I already knew it would be, was yes. The downstairs cupboard at the studio is dark, damp, dingy and of course, scary. Oh yes and it smells weird. Really weird. Much like any room that contains an amalgamation of stuff so I can never really figure out what is stored in there. Sometimes paint, sometimes carpets, chairs, lanterns, blow-up dolls, board games, wires, books, toilet seats … the list does go on. Naturally, this is where all the lovely ladders live, in a room that is tricky to navigate whilst also smelling very weird

(did I mention that?). Getting the ladder in and out of the room is, erm, an experience. No one likes doing it, but do it they must! I actually quite enjoy hearing the ladders coming. It’s like a stampede of crescendoing crashes; a tidal wave of noise as the ladder ricochets off the wall and clutter, naturally underpinned by a healthy array of profanities. It makes for a wonderful soundscape. We needed the ladder because one of the lights on the Brighton Lights set was hanging lower than an assembly of infrequently watered fuchsias. A bitter irony for a show titled Brighton ‘Lights’. The only way to remedy such a disastrous issue was to get the ladder out and realign the poorly thing. I got the ladder. Made my way back up. Started to realign. Came back down. I was scared, dear readers. But not scared to fall; I was scared I’d drop the light. William, our director, barked at me to get down. He realigned it in seconds. Everyone congratulated and cheered him. I was told to put the ladder away. Which I did, very loudly. Lights, cameras, ladders away? Action! What a week we’ve got for you this week! Comedians Chris

Cresswell and Dave Thompson dropped by to make us all laugh. Author Tim Pilcher told us all about his new book, whilst Phil Jerrod told us all about his amazing beard (and comedy shows). Matt Whistler stopped by and wowed us all with his unique style of comedy. Mark Stack, music aficionado, popped in at the last minute to talk music. And I really do mean last minute! He wasn’t meant to be a guest on the show, but after I’d heard him chat music, I had to get him on. And to finish we had Steve Jones (‘Jonesy’) from QTube to talk LGBT, with DJ Seamus Haji to talk DJ(BT?). Overall, another great week of guests. And as an extra treat, we had the wonderful Brighton School of Singing pleasuring our eardrums. Please do join us Wednesday to Saturday at 7pm on Freeview Channel 8, and Virgin Media 159. “What’s that, Jonesy? The toilet? Just downstairs mate. Not the right door, though. I

’m going to get this out of the way immediately. Yes, I did get to see Kate Bush and I’m very sorry if you didn’t. You’re probably on your way over to torch my house now, but I would also like to come clean and say that I didn’t even try to buy tickets when they went on sale. Yes, I accept that you really hate me now. And whilst I’m the walking dead, I may as well admit that I’m not the world’s biggest Kate Bush fan. I own one album, The Whole

Story (I can actually hear you explode with rage now) and ‘Wuthering Heights’ is in my top ten all-time favourite songs. OK, I feel better now. Like I’ve gone to alcoholics anonymous and admitted I enjoy heavily drinking, on the quiet. And it’s OK to hate me. You are fully justified. But at least hear me out on this before I appear in The Argus for all the wrong reasons. Like many music fans, I was very excited when Kate Bush announced that she was going to perform live for the first time in 35 years. It was a similar feeling to when Prince announced he was playing in a few sheds around London and David Bowie decided to release a single, while everyone was asleep. But I’m not one for sitting on the internet at 9am and refreshing every five seconds (unless Freddie Mercury comes back from the dead), so I ignored the tickets going on sale and resigned myself to never seeing her live in my lifetime. It obviously sold out in seconds, as did the extra dates she put on. Some weeks later, I received a message on Facebook from

someone I had befriended at a wedding in Switzerland, two years ago. She had two spare tickets. I snapped them up. I gave my spare to a Kate Bush nut (do you forgive me now?) and last week, we saw the good lady herself. Now, at the time of writing, Kate Bush still had a few dates to go of her 22-date run at the Hammersmith Apollo. So I’m not going to give you the opportunity to hate me even more by describing what I saw. If you didn’t go, you will be burning this magazine by now; if you are going, I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Needless to say, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and one of my top three all-time favourite gigs, alongside Blur at Glastonbury a few years ago and Queen’s last ever live performance at Knebworth in 1986. If you still hate me, console yourself with this; I’ve paid to see Status Quo live. I hate myself now.

TOUR OF BRITAIN Brighton seafront was dominated by lots of bikes last weekend, as Saturday saw the incredible Tour Of Britain race shoot through East Sussex, ending up on Madeira Drive. Bardsley’s Fish & Chips

I

spend more than half my life standing up in front of either an audience or a TV camera – and I feel no fear. It was not always so. For years and years I dreaded having to put myself in that kind of exposed position; I would feel nauseated, sweat and tremble at the very thought of it. School events were a nightmare, I could do a bit in a school play but nothing with more than a few lines, or I would freeze. Not so now. On the contrary ... the problem is getting me, once I have hit my stride, to shut up. The fear disappeared when I was about 18 and went to Chelsea School Of Art. There, I joined a madrigal group. I had always liked singing and I could read music so it seemed like an ideal way to meet people.

STAGE FRIGHT How is it I don’t fear standing up in front of a crowd – or do I? Pretty soon I could warble my way with the best of them; Dowland, Byrd, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Mozart, and later on bits of 20th Century stuff that certainly kept me on my toes. We didn’t perform as such – an occassional party with friends but little more – but it did kill the fear and when, two years later, I won a scholarship, I was able to put that fear firmly to rest. In those days, Thames Television gave out a clutch of travel bursaries and I was lucky enough to win one. It was enough cash to take me to circus school in London and Paris, and there the fear of looking like a fool was turned into a love of playing the fool. I could get up in front of strangers and act, as my mother would describe it, the ‘giddy goat’. I loved it. I loved the make-up and costumes, I loved the trickery, the silly gait, the buzz of seeing just how far you could push things and the desperate scramble back to safety and/or dignity when you pushed too far.

I was sorry, I am still sorry ...

much I can get away with. It’s fun, so why not? Well, there are reasons why not, as I found out over the weekend. I was on stage once again, presenting a live show and having fun with my guests and the audience. In doing so I made the statement that, as an outand-out fatty, I could never be described as being ... well, best not to repeat the reference for fear (once again) of offending. I had offended, though, and I was truly sorry. I had gone a step too far and an apology was required. I repeat that apology here. I had not meant to offend; sincerely not meant to. It was simply a case of mouth engaging before brain. The moment my faux pas had been brought to my attention I apologised in person, only to be told that my apology was not wanted. I suppose the offended person has a right to say that, but it did leave me somewhat adrift of what to do. I was sorry, I am still sorry – but no amount of me saying that can actually change what happened or what had caused the offence. I apologise that my tactless humour, a device that I used to take the mickey out of myself, touched so raw a nerve. In future, I will just describe myself as being a fatty.

I guess that I use that trick to this day, pushing the boundaries to see how far I can go and how

Talent abounds, as Brighton Art Fair 2014 comes to the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange

B

righton Art Fair, supported by Oh Comely magazine, brings together over 100 of the best contemporary artists from the UK and abroad. The fair takes place in the beautiful and historic Brighton Dome Corn Exchange in the heart of the city, and has built a very strong reputation for presenting highest quality contemporary artwork in a relaxed, informal and friendly environment. Brighton Art Fair enables painters, printmakers, ceramicists, photographers and sculptors to present their original and eclectic work to the public, bringing a personal feel to viewing and to the buying process. Visitors enjoy meeting the artists and learning about their creative inspirations, techniques and future projects. The fair draws in curators, galleries, retailers, collectors and art fans, many looking for that definitive piece. Some of the artists have exhibited at Brighton Art Fair before, others are brand new to the event, but all the work is exciting, fresh and exceptional. New work to look out for includes Julie Ball’s exquisite porcelain and wood collages, Annie Blanchet Rouze’s mixed media paintings, and Emelie Essel’s embroidered work on silk glass beads. The fair welcomes back artist Sam Hewitt and his paintings of urban landscapes, Lilia UmañaClarke’s stoneware ceramics inspired by early Guy Holder Cuvee’s hare

South American civilizations, and local artist Sam Lock’s oil and mixed media works. Brighton Art Fair will introduce Alun Callender’s project of environmental portraits of East Sussex visual artists, designers and creative types. Alun usually spends a couple of hours with the subjects in Celia Wilkinson their studio, to arrange a composition with a strong narrative. He will be photographing approximately 80 people and making a series of short films to complement the project. Alun wants to celebrate the diverse creative talent in the area, and is fascinated by how people balance the fine line between creativity and commerce. The project will culminate in an exhibition and a book. The show welcomes back the wonderful artists from Arthouse Meath, a charitable enterprise offering artistic facilities and support to adults living with learning and physical difficulties. The work being produced is raw, honest and properly beautiful, and it has been wonderful to see Meath expand, now having established its own shop in Godalming and being asked to exhibit work at many shows here and abroad. Also of interest will be the artwork of the Outside In artists, based at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. Outside In provide a platform for artists who find it difficult to access the art world either because of mental health issues, disability, health, social circumstance or because their work does not conform to what is normally considered as art. Brighton Art Fair, 26 – 28 September 2014, Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, Church Street, Brighton, BN1 1UG Open: Friday 11am–7.30pm, Saturday 10am–6pm, Sunday 10am–5pm Tickets: £6.50, children under 14 free www.brightonartfair.co.uk

with Andrew Kay Gourmet delights at a Brighton and Hove Food & Drink Festival event

THREE’S COMPANY utumn harvest has to be my favourite foodie time of the year, and what better way to celebrate than with three of my favourite Brighton chefs. Hosted by Drakes Hotel in their stylish restaurant, we started the evening with a great G&T made with Sarah Thompson’s delicious Sussex Blackdown Gin; my kind of a drink every day of the week. Down in the dining room the guests were seated at large sociable tables. This was a sharing event, sharing the joy of great seasonal food, and pretty soon the room was buzzing with animated conversation, only punctuated by the arrival of a clear chicken and vegetable consomme. Perfection – crystal clear, packed with flavour and a delicious start, as were the selection of bread rolls hot from the kitchen. Chef number one was Rob Carr, a senior member of the Hotel du Vin Bistro team on a regional basis. He revisited his International Chef Exchange starter, this time giving us two scotch quail’s eggs with a curry mayonnaise. It was a hearty start to the evening and one that went down extremely well. Rob’s dish was served with a glass of Ridgeview Fitzrovia presented by Mardi Roberts, a member of the Ridgeview family team. This fine sparkler was served to Barack Obama on his last state visit to the UK, and Ridgeview wines were served at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations – hardly surprising, as they win medals across the globe. Drakes’ very own chef Andrew MacKenzie was in charge of the main course, and he too

took inspiration from his ICEx dinner with a main course of veal rump and sweetbread which he served with perfect turnips and a chanterelle spätzle that had me smacking my lips with pleasure. MacKenzie can always pull it out of the bag, but this dish was exceptional. With this we drank a great red from the Rhone Valley presented by Paul Milne of Enotria, a recent sponsor of the food festival. Onward to dessert – this time, it was the turn of new star chef Michael Bremner, whose restaurant 64 Degrees was voted in at number 36 in the National Restaurant Awards after only being open for seven months. Not that any of us were suprised by this; far from it. Michael and his amazing team have been stunning us with fine dishes since day one, and right now it is one of the hottest restaurants, not only here in Brighton but across the South East. Michael opens his new 64 Degrees in London’s Pimlico this month, and I wish him the very best of luck. For dessert he made us a dish inspired by the chef that he swapped with for ICEx – a vanilla panacotta, blood orange and cake confection that was delicious. It was an homage to chef Bas Oonk of Basaal in Den Haag, and I was lucky enough to have him and his wife Loes at my table as guests of the festival. Enotria treated us to a delicious sparkling white, this time sweeted with a dosage of ice wine, which was an extraorinarily delicious fizz with a delicate, perfumed sweetness.

We finished with a platter of fine Sussex cheeses presented by David Deaves of La Cave a Fromage, and a glass of elderberry port, again from Sarah Thompson. All in all, a stunning meal in good company, each course punctuated with a post-dish interview with the chef and wine maker, or presenter. I left deliciously satisfied, if a little tired from my thoroughly enjoyable hosting duties. PAST THE PORT Annabel Jackson on how the industry is re-inventing itself

LATESTWRITES

ON THE GRAPEVINE ort has the longest ‘official’ history of any wine in the world (the appellation was created in the Douro in 1756) – but is now trying to secure for itself a solid future, too. An event organised this year on the appellation’s anniversary date, 10 September, in the city of Porto, marked the inaugural Port Wine Day and certainly got discussions going. The image of port has traditionally been rather stuffy: an after dinner drink to be enjoyed over cigars, and most particularly by British gentlemen. Is it possible for the industry to leverage that tradition, yet embrace modernity? The governing body, Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), believes so. This body says the port industry has at least four strategies underway for Port ... something adapting to current consumer and habits. First, to to have with, rather trends garner the interest of the younger generation with than after, a meal delicious cocktails like Portonic, and to push fashionable rose port. Next, to hit the ultra-premium market with beautifully packaged, limited edition bottles. And the industry is trying to push port as something to have with, rather than after, a meal (in much the same way as we might pair a first course of foie gras with sweet wine). Perhaps the most exciting initiative is in the category of aged white ports. There’s one category called Old Tawnies, which are classified at 10, 20, 30 or 40 years old. But now producers such as Symington, Niepoort and Taylor’s are going back into their cellars and seeking out aged tawnies which may even be more than 100 years old – but very affordable.

WATCHING DAVE Investigative-style comedian Dave Gorman talks to Victoria Nangle about PowerPoint, deodorant statistics, and William Shatner’s hairpieces

Hello! How has today been treating you? Very well, thanks for asking. And you? Also well, thank you. You are renowned for having a curious mind. What was the last thing that made you go; “Ooh, I wonder what’s behind that idea?” There’s an advert for a deodorant, I’m not sure which one, but the thrust of the ad is that this deodorant won’t leave marks on your clothes. It boasts that it’s been proven to be mark free on 100 colours. a) I can’t think of 100 colours, b) it also says it’s been tested on 120 colours. So basically, it’s scientifically proven to leave a mark on one in every six colours. And this is their advert!

What’s your favourite website in your ‘bookmarks’ list? I don’t have one favourite. I have practical sites that I visit regularly to do practical things but the joy is in alighting on the oddities. Recent favourites include two sites that use a narrow focus on a niche interest as a springboard to great essay writing. They are http://withbillyconnolly.tumblr.com/ and http://shatnerstoupee.blogspot.co.uk. One of them seeks to decode what it means to be British by examining the celebrities present at a 1985 recording of An Audience With Billy Connolly, and the other studies film and TV through the prism of William Shatner’s changing hairpieces. You can probably guess which one’s which. Genuinely great, passionate writing on both of them. And not the cheap laughs you might expect. Sadly, neither have been updated in a while, which is why new things are always sought ... What is your favourite word? I ask this in the spirit that my favourite word is ‘whoops’, because it means there’s a story either before or after it that’s intriguing. Quidnunc. I am a quidnunc. Your latest show involves more PowerPoint presentation work, which you have been using for years now. If you could make one request of Microsoft in the next upgrade of the

application, what magic wand innovation would you add to it? I wouldn’t add anything to it. I’d take stuff away. I use it because it’s a simple way of putting information in front of an audience. All the bells and whistles just make things more complicated and less punchy. Simple is good. So, I know it’s a boring question, but can you please briefly outline what we can expect from your latest show? It’s not that it’s a boring question ... it’s just one that nobody wants to answer. Comedy works by surprising an audience; by hijacking one thought and turning it into another. Telling the audience what they can expect is a way of ruining that. I suppose you can tell them the topics that will be discussed, but even that’s useless isn’t it? The funniest things to me are the topics that sound like they will be the least promising. There’s no point doing comedy about stuff that’s obviously funny, as there’s nothing for a comedian to add. So ... am I whittling it down? I’ll be talking about stuff that doesn’t sound like it will be funny. But it will be. In reality, people who need more convincing than that aren’t exactly my target audience. I’ve got a friend who only reads romance novels. She won’t pick them up unless there’s a man in a uniform on the cover. Preferably riding a horse. The first thing she does is read the back page to see if it’s got a happy ending. She won’t read the rest of it if there isn’t a happy ending. If there’s a comedy-going equivalent – someone who only goes if the poster features a man in a tie and there’s a promise of at

least 12 knob jokes – then I’m probably not for them. Any more cycling tours on the horizon, or did the last one put you off cycling for a very long time? It hasn’t put me off cycling. I still cycle as my main way of travelling around town. But it’s a very impractical way of touring. In general, I don’t book venues; they book me. Like all performers, I’m a gun for hire and I go where the work is. That’s why on most tours you’ll see someone’s performing in Preston one night and Aberdeen the next. That’s an impractical way of travelling, but it’s the practical way of putting a tour together. But when you’re travelling by bicycle, the next show has to fall within an 80-mile radius. And sometimes, that limits you to two venues. And sometimes they’re both already booked up on that night ... and so you go back and try to change the route ... and suddenly five shows you had pencilled in have to be cancelled as you rebuild it, heading in a slightly different direction, and it drives you nuts. That we managed to make it happen at all – I did 30 nights on the bounce, averaging 60 miles each day – is ridiculous enough, thank you.

I’d launch attacks on the nation’s other piers

• LATEST 7 17 www.thelatest.co.uk •

If you were given an evening a week that had been baggsied to do an evening class – has to be an evening class – what would you like to spend a year learning? Darts. (I’m not sure there is such a class, but there could be.) What are your plans for the next 12 months professionally? Well, a third series of Modern Life Is Goodish has been commissioned. So I’ll do this tour, take a couple of weeks off over Christmas and then start on that ... which should be finished around this time next year. So some fluke has meant that you’ve inherited the old burned-out pier in Brighton. With money no object, what would you do with it? I’d regenerate it as a traditional pier, but use it as a cover for a submarine base – from where I’d launch attacks on the nation’s other piers. Thank you lots for your time and I look forward immensely to seeing the show. *big grin* Have a great day. No, no. Thank you. And I look forward to seeing you. And the others. There will be others. THE CAVALERI QUARTET The opening concert of the superb Strings Attached season was a diverse affair, and first piece, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ quartet no. 2, truly took off in the second movement. The viola themes were delicately, movingly drawn by Ann Beilby and the playing was immaculate across the board. More

musically striking, however, was the challenging Jonathan Harvey quartet no. 3, with the staccato swirls and manipulation of the instruments both technically impressive and an engrossing live spectacle. The Frank Bridge quartet no. 3 was a little more meandering (although the tragic melodies were tenderly rendered), but the encore, featuring a snippet of Beethoven, was a suitably stirring finale. Even the occasional comedy skits are in keeping with the music; tongue in cheek, end of the pier stuff. Stewart Lee it isn’t, but it’s right for the show. And the audience lapped it up, every last drop. It’s clear the performers work extremely hard and it pays off. It’s a show for everyone, and there aren’t many of those around. t is amazing the warmth that a Chas & Dave gig generates. There was genuine love for these guys, a knowing nod to two Rock ‘n’ Roll lovers (a bit of skiffle and boogie woogie too) who ploughed a new, unrepeatable furrow; who saw highs and then relative obscurity, a novelty act from a bygone time. To the informed they were never that, of course – consummate professional musicians hibernate, waiting for times and trends to change. We are now full circle. All the hits bashed out with the same vigour from yesteryear. And you could tell that they were enjoying the experience once again too. Unmissable. Gertcha. Lee Stevens

WE BE THREE

The eclectic Brighton Craft Fair showcases bespoke art and craftwork from local artists this September

B

righton Craft Fair celebrates its third birthday on Saturday 27 September 2014. Expect an abundance of unique handmade arts and crafts, from local talented artists and craft creators exhibiting their handiwork for you to purchase. The eclectic mix of stalls will leave you spoilt for choice and in awe of the wealth of local talent Brighton has to offer. It’s all just a stone’s throw from the sea, at the gateway to Brighton’s world famous and historic South Lanes. Since its creation three years ago, Brighton Craft Fair has prided itself on placing their emphasis firmly on its exhibitors. The Fair provides exhibitors with a platform to showcase their talent, offering the most affordable commercial craft fair stalls and spaces in central Brighton and free promotion via social media. Their frenetic social media activity, coupled with successful fairs, has gained extensive media attention with mentions and articles in

Homemaker and Cardmaking & Papercraft magazines. The Independent also ranks Brighton Craft Fair in its ‘10 best in the UK’. Chris Lau and Soman Balan, the two artists and experienced event organisers behind Brighton Craft Fair attribute its success to continually maintaining their central focus on exhibitors and their creativity. Chris Lau said: “Without the exhibitors, their talent, their creativity and their creations there would be no Brighton Craft Fair. We owe our strong following and reputation both locally and nationally to them and their talents.” “It was always our intention to provide a monthly space where local art can make its way directly from the artists’ hands to the public. Several of our exhibitors tell us that they are regularly commissioned at the Fair. There’s something to be said about buying locally; not only are you supporting the artist and the local economy, you’re also investing in an original, unique creation,” adds Soman Balan. Those who visit and exhibit at numerous craft fairs across Brighton and Hove say that Brighton Craft Fair is “the best craft fair in town ... for us it’s the home of art and

craft in Brighton”. The Fair “has the best atmosphere” and is “in the loveliest of venues; The Friends Meeting House”. Visitors also comment on the friendliness of the organisers and their kindness in providing free hot drinks for exhibitors, which is a gesture that proves to be a massive hit. Due to popular demand, Brighton Craft Fair have now released their dates for 2015 on their website and bookings are currently being accepted. So, venture down to Brighton Craft Fair at the Friends Meeting House on Ship Street on Saturday 27 September 2014 between 11am-5pm, to celebrate three years of artists and craft creators selling their gorgeous creations directly to the public. Whilst you’re there, drop into Brighton Craft Cafe, “the most value for money cafe in the South Lanes”; many tempting sweet and savoury treats, hot and cold drinks will be on offer at tempting prices. Bring your family and friends and make a day of it! Entry is free. For more information about Brighton Craft Fair, visit: www.brightoncraft.co.uk

SMALL … … but perfectly formed, Brighton Little Theatre continue to impress with productions that are far from amateur hilst the major commercial theatres continue against all the odds to programme excellent theatre of all kinds, from the brave and new to the clearly commercial, we should never forget the smaller theatre in our city, professional and, dare I use the word, amateur. Having seen impressive productions at Brighton Little Theatre on many occassions, notably Steel Magnolias and Canary, I would not hesitate in recommending their new production of Abi Morgan’s Lovesong. “That is the story of our beginning. And this is the story of … the end.” Lovesong is a 40-year story of an ordinary love. You witness one pivotal week in 60-something married couple Billy and Maggie’s lives, whilst in flashback you see their younger selves over several years, much earlier in their marriage. Then, as terminally ill Maggie

W

faces the end, time becomes more fluid and the couples collide and intertwine in this beautiful and haunting tale. All relationships have their ups and downs; the optimism of youth becomes the wisdom of experience. Love is a leap of faith. Leap with me. Lovesong was first performed in a highly acclaimed production by Frantic Assembly in 2011, and Brighton Little Theatre’s production will be one of its first amateur productions. Brighton Little Theatre’s production will use drama, mime, movement, dance and some singing to tell the story of Maggie and Billy’s life in 90 minutes. It also features some originally recorded pieces from Sam Rivers and cast member Frank McHugh, who will also be performing live music in the bar after the end of the show. Abi Morgan’s writing for the screen includes The Invisible Woman, the Margaret Thatcher film Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep, the flagship BBC TV drama The Hour, the BAFTA award-winning drama Sex Traffic (Channel 4) and Shame (co-written with Steve McQueen). Her writing for the stage includes The Night Is Darkest Before The Dawn (part of the Tricycle Theatre’s Great Game season), Fugee (NT New Connections), Tender (Hampstead), Splendour (Paines Plough) and Tiny Dynamite (Frantic Assembly). The cast includes Ann Atkins as Older Maggie, Mike Skinner as Older Billy, Cicely Whitehead as Younger Maggie and Frank McHugh as Younger Billy, and is directed by Steven Adams and Tess Gill. Steven’s recent productions at BLT include the amateur premiere of Jonathan Harvey's Canary and an extremely well received production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe last Christmas. Tess directed Loveplay by Moira Buffini, which won Best Overall Production in the 2013 Brighton and Hove Art Council Drama Awards, and earlier this

year a joyous production of Daisy Pulls It Off. Steven says: “I first read Lovesong just a few months ago and I knew instantly that this was a play I had to direct. It is beautifully written, with a simple rhythm and a lyrical nature. It is very sparse on detail but richly layered with feeling and emotions. It has very little story or plot, but still says so much about the human condition, the desire to be loved, the need for companionship and the intricacies of the heart.” Lovesong is Brighton Little Theatre’s entry in the 2014 Brighton & Hove Arts Council’s (BHAC) Drama Awards. THE WEEK IN FEATURES

IT’S REIGNING CATS AND ... CATS

ost excitingly (or not, if you aren’t a fan!), this week on PostFeature Joseph and I shall be reviewing Magic In The Moonlight, the new Woody Allen film. It stars two of my favourite people (Colin Firth and Emma Stone) – actually, lots of my favourite people! The film looks to be a great romp, set in the ’20s and based around a stuffy Englishman’s attempts to debunk a rather charming young American ‘psychic’. Of course, we can all see where this is going … I am one of the supposed minority who finds modern Woody Allen films far more appealing than the earlier ‘classics’. Blue Jasmine (2013), Midnight In Paris (2011), Vicky Christina Barcelona (2008) and Match Point (2005) are all films that I enjoyed hugely, despite the difference in styles and The film looks to humour, whilst his earlier work be a great romp for me seems a little laboured, a little too focused on being deep and introspective and a little too … well, there is only so much Woody Allen one girl can take on the screen! The second film for this week is This Is Where I Leave You, a comedy drama based around a pugnacious family’s reunion, directed by Shawn Levy. Levy is one of the most commercially successful directors of the past decade, with films having grossed over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. His work includes Cheaper By The Dozen, Just Married, Night At The Museum and The Internship … not exactly ‘awards bait’, I’ll grant you, but they clearly do well and definitely have an audience. I am rather enamored with his 2010 film Date Night, staring Tina Fey, who I would gladly watch reading the phone book as I’m sure I would be laughing heartily along. Fey is also part of the ensemble in This Is Where I Leave You, along with Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda, Rose Bryne and Adam Driver (who is normally found in mumblecore films and the HBO series Girls, so it will be interesting to see how he fares in this). This Sunday’s FilmFest is a special treat for anyone who is a fan of horror, gore or humour: we have an exclusive, feature length edition of the multi-award winning The Bloody Mary Show! It has previously only been shown as short ‘webisodes’, so we have pulled off quite the coup to have it on LatestTV!

ur house is dominated by Gilbert and George. No, not the famous ‘art for all’ artistic duo, but our two over-indulged, permanently Eve Poland in-your-face cats. So – unsurprisingly – we have a particular affection for the work of Brighton artist and fellow feline-lover Eve Poland, with ‘Is this it?’ currently glaring down at us from our living room wall as a constant reminder to stock up on Sheba. With only a year’s formal art training, Eve’s is a natural and apparently precocious talent – she had her first exhibition at the age of four in Brighton Library. Her passion for prints led to Eve taking a screenprinting course and now she produces her own editions. They start with a doodle that may have been inspired by a photo or the sight of her own posturing pets. That’s worked up into an ink drawing, which Eve then transfers to the computer. But she is no digital perfectionist, Leila Godden preferring the differences that can occur from the screenprinting process. We love Eve’s bold, graphic style, wickedly acute observation and elegant wit. She’s also cornered the ‘kinky lady’ market. See more of her work at evepoland.com. Don’t miss: It’s Brighton Art Fair this week, so head to The Corn Exchange from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 September to come face to face with the most amazing gathering of artists – many local. If you make your way to stand 92, congratulate Leila Godden on being recently accepted as an associate member of the United Society of Artists. Her dramatic seascapes and abstracts are set to make a stunning contrast to the work of her stand buddy – and fellow Chalk Gallery (Lewes) artist – Louisa Crispin, whose Louisa beautifully intricate drawings Crispin are inspired by the natural world. www.artymagazines.com

COMEDY Victoria Nangle

Jenifer Hooper, To The Trees: A Changing of Home

GIVE A LITTLE LOVE ... Laughter is good for the soul, but it can also be very good for your karma with these fabulous charity nights now how to make a comedy night out make you feel even better? Make it a charity fundraiser comedy night out! As much as the idea of a ‘Big Society’ grates as a cop out from a government using new words to say it’s out of its depth, it is heartening to see so many entertainment bookers turning their hands to helping out charities – big and small, as belts got pulled ever more tighter. Perfect case in point: this week sees the return of Cardiac Comedy with its second outing (Komedia, Wednesday 24 September, 8pm, £13) for The British Heart Foundation. Mixing big names like Angela Barnes – as seen on C4’s Stand Up For The Week, as well as Mock the Week – with exciting local talent like Sean McLoughlan – one to watch at the Edinburgh Fringe this year – along with Rudi Lickwood, Gerry Kyei, and MC and organiser Dave Blood. The British Heart Foundation may be a big organisation, but it needs support as much as any other, and to be honest will have helped pretty much all of us along the way at some point. In October, The Brighton Comedy

K

N

Festival greets us with its customary Opening Night Gala In Aid Of Sussex Beacon (Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Friday 10 October, 8pm, £25). Having Alan Carr as a patron has never done it any harm at all, although this year it is hosted not by the toothy one, but by the marvellous Adam Hills instead. Perhaps hosting duties are tied in with how much a comic is seen on Channel 4 in any calendar year ... Joining Hills in the line-up are Rich Hall, Josh Widdicombe and Romesh Ranganathan. Actually, RR is a very active charity chappie in October, as you can also catch him on the bill of Big Cheer For Amaze (Komedia, Thursday 16 October, 8pm, £16) with Angela Barnes (doing her good deed again – thank you, lady), Justin Moorhouse and others. And in case you were wondering, Amaze is a brilliant Sussex charity providing support for local families with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Plus, of course, every month sees Charity Chuckle at Komedia, fighting the good fight for those that help others all the year round, and having had a truly cracking run in the Edinburgh Fringe this year for the first time. And in case you were wondering, October’s headliner is Nathan Caton (14 October, 8pm, £10/5). It’s not December yet, but it blimmin’ well ‘tis the season to be jolly. Spread goodwill to all and dig deep. Ho ho ho. www.komedia.co.uk/brighton www.brightoncomedyfestival.co.uk

FAMY

We are Famy … Jeff Hemmings spoke with Arthur Yates

F

rom the short but reverential and harmony drenched opening of ‘Aux Armes’ to follow up track ‘Donkey’, new band Famy lay out the template for their big and spacious sound amalgamating some of the folk grit of Mumford & Sons, the tribalistic indie-folk band Local Natives, former touring buddies Wu Lyf, and the reverb-drenched and mournfully epic Glasvegas. But, they are a band who aren’t part of any particular scene, and that combined with weird and wonderful backgrounds has inevitably helped them to fashion something altogether fresh, and both contemplative and invigorating. “We all met in the south of France”, says Arthur, whose brother Bruce is also in

the band, along with Luca Maria Galbiati. "We all moved there at different times in our lives and met at school around the turn of the millennium. We grew up in the south of France, and then moved to London at different points, around recording the album. That is where our influences come from; I guess we are a rock band that comes from the south of France!” Their debut album, We Fam Econo, was recorded in a church in Gloucestershire, a conscious attempt to capture the spacious and cavernous sonics of their sound. “We recorded our album in the summer of 2012 but, for various reasons, we weren’t able to put it out until now. It is quite frustrating, but it is a record we really believe in and is a nice reflection of where we were at that time. I still listen to it.”

Their backgrounds are very unusual, and although they sound a little like a modern day American or British indie-folk band, they have spent very little time in this country up until recently. But their French backgrounds are obvious, not least via the band’s name … “Initially we thought about ‘Family’, but there were loads of bands called that, so we changed it to ‘Famy’, which is French for family. “Luke is Italian, and me and my brother are English-Indian. And we're bilingual; our opening track is in French – a Marseille football chant – and a little take from the French national anthem. It was covered by Serge Gainsbourg ... and us!” Another oddity about the band is their love of American punk legends Minutemen, who featured Mike Watt in the band, a subsequent member of the even more legendary The Stooges. “We are inspired by the Minutemen; they released a documentary that was called We Jam Econo, so we (very cleverly) called our album We Fam Econo. We sound nothing like them … but that was the point. The Minutemen’s idea of punk was like no one else’s idea; they played their songs and got spat on. It is a little how we feel, we don’t feel we fit in anywhere in London, and we made a record that sounds like a punk record, but probably not for anyone else. We haven’t been spat on yet, though!” Famy at The Hope, Wed 24 Sept, 8pm, free

TECHNO SAVVY

Greg Marshall: technophobia vs. technophilia

Andrew Bullock on the highs and lows of MIC in the Big Apple

I 

t is frankly terrifying how dependent we have become, as a nation, on technology. There are many whose mobile phones seem like a freakish extension to their thumbs; distant cousins perhaps to those who share a creepily symbiotic relationship with Facebook. Of course for every technophile there is a technophobe. The cantankerous, often (but not necessarily) older being, offering such pearls of wisdom as; “I don’t need one of these smart–like phones with all this app nonsense, my old phone serves me fine,” and, “I remember when kids used to play outside, not spend their life on one of these Nintendo-X-Station gizmos”. Thankfully I am not of the latter group. I love technology. I revel in technology. I just don’t trust technology. Though I consider myself fairly technologically savvy, I am convinced that technology instinctively knows the upper limits of my understanding, and exploits it frequently. Too add to my frustrations at the failing of all things electrical, there seems to always be some numpty on hand to suggest I “try turning it off and on again,” or “give it a smack”. Such ignorance and brutal savagery around delicate components, whilst making me feel better by comparison, does little to help the situation. The uselessness of man when faced with technological tasks was beautifully highlighted in the last few weeks by two tasks integral to the filming of Bored Gamers. The first involved the wiring of a games console so it may be played live and simultaneously recorded for later broadcast. In reality, such a seemingly feasible feat requires more boxes, gadgets, gizmos and cables than I have ever seen. Even now I couldn’t tell you what these all did. I believe one box up-scales the signal whilst another down-scales it, but then I could be making this all up. I do know the day put aside for testing this was an unequivocal nightmare of technological failure. This nightmare was repeated when, shortly before filming our second episode, the mega drive (an integral part of the show) refused to turn on. All the aforementioned considered, it is embarrassing, and not without a smidgen of irony, that the first problem was eventually fixed by turning one of the connected boxes “off and on again” and the latter issue by punching the retro console. Still, after a week or two of being held hostage by circuit boards and components, all’s well that ends well ... at least ’til next week! Bored Gamers is an hour-long weekly show on all things gaming. Tune in to see it on Latest TV at 9pm every Friday night.

t’s the last few days in NYC. Has anyone figured out yet why any of them were there in the first place? Me neither. This week’s attempt at asserting the boys’ masculine athleticism sees them on jet skis. We appear to have run out of token American sports to play, so now we have resorted to doing something that normally would take place on an all-inclusive holiday in Bermuda. Steph is all a-glow about Stevie. She is gushing like a wayward sewage pipe. She explains to Lucy that Stevie is going to have a chat with Billie about it all and sort it out. “He would never lie,” says Steph. So, by the end of the episode, he will have lied. Small Sam’s advice to Wheeze, in the impending approach of her transatlantic separation from Alik, is to “make him a collage”. Then he orders a great big banana (split). Binky and Lucy meet up and slag off Our National Mother, Her Eminence The Statue Of Liberty. They’re all “she’s not that great”. Watch your tongues, you little madams. Will YOU ever have a 305 foot aqua-marine coloured statue erected on a private island, dedicated to YOU? Will you? I apologise on behalf of Great Britain, sweet sweet lady. Amidst the lavender, Billie awaits Stevie, who arrives wearing a linen shirt the colour of sick. He lies to her about kissing Steph. Jamie has spent $700 on a helmet that helps you not to lose hair. Let’s all take a second to mull over that, shall we …

Steph is gushing like a wayward sewage pipe Alik and Wheeze are trying to recreate the pottery scene from Ghost, but with paint. He is all, “I can’t imagine not having you near me”, and, “you rock my world, sugar”. Hideous! Hello? What is this? Proudlock and Lucy, flirty flirty on a roof? On Mark Francis’ boat party, Wheeze goes to kiss him and he leaves her hanging. You are SUCH a bitch, MF. Don’t ever change! Stevie is now wearing a tangerine blazer, which is not an improvement on the sick coloured linen shirt from earlier. It makes him look a bit like a sad reject from ‘OK Go’! There’s a lot of banter about Jamie getting it on with Carson, but I’m not convinced it’s just banter. Just imagine – Carson with his eye tattoo, Jamie with his Peter Pan tattoo … they could take over the world! Alik carelessly informs Jamie that Lucy and Proudlock have been hooking up. Jamie is furious and so confronts them. Turns out they HAVE kissed! Not once, not twice, but thrice! Three times a lady! Now, I hate to toot my own horn, but I predicted these two would get it on. They’re the only two who actually don’t see love and relationships as a dirty poisonous game. Alik is standing at the stern of the boat with Wheeze, grabs her cheeks and says, “I love ya baby”. Everyone else gathers on the overlooking deck and cheer at the lovers. But this is a bad omen, let’s face it, seeing that they all did that to Lucy and Jamie at Christmas and then again to Binky and Alex last spring. And look where those relationships ended – in shattered yuletide dreams and adulterous fornicative orgies. Andrew’s blog can be read at drewjbullock.wordpress.com

WEDNESDAY 24 The Great British Bake Off BBC1, 8pm It’s all about the dough – again! The hopeful bakers are charged with the task of making enriched sweet fruit loaves for their signature challenge. Yum! Then the technical challenge pushes them to cross bread with pastry and create some rather tasty Eastern European delights. Mel and Sue will be in smelly heaven.

The Men With Many Wives Channel 4, 10pm Permitted under Sharia law, even if it is illegal under British law, polygamy has always been an intriguing idea. This documentary estimates that there are as many as 20,000 polygamous marriages amongst British Muslims, and considers what it is that drives the search for another wife. Is it desire or tradition?

Oh You Pretty Things: The Story Of Music And Fashion BBC4, 9pm From the British Invasion of the 1960s, to Cool Brittania, and more recently too – there’s been a connection between British music and fashion that we’ve rather enjoyed sharing with the world. Lauren Laverne narrates this documentary tripping from punk to Mary Quant.

THURSDAY 25 Chasing Shadows ITV1, 9pm Everyone loves a confession. Especially when it’s to a really savage series of murders – nice ’n’ tidy. Even Sean’s pretty chuffed, and he thinks he’s found the third victim from this particular self-confessed convicted killer. Except there seem to be inconsistencies. Is the man in prison innocent?

Dallas Channel Five, 10pm It’s time for a wedding at Southfork – yee hah! John Ross and Pamela prepare to walk down the aisle, looking like butter wouldn’t melt. Bless. Thing is, Sue Ellen knows her boy’s a rotter and her heart goes out to the bride. She’s been there, bought the t-shirt and got the AA tokens to prove it.

Don’t Drop The Baby BBC3, 9pm Oh, men! Aren’t they just silly billies when it comes to childcare? Hopefully this isn’t quite as condescending as the premise implies, as midwives are called in to help dads-to-be come to terms with the practicalities of parenting. This week it’s bloodphobic Jay and inappropriate motor mouth Digger in need.

SUNDAY 28 Our Girl BBC1, 9pm She’s a scrapper is Our Girl. Well, she’s got to be against these kind of conditions combining not only an ex boyfriend but also a war zone. And you thought bumping into your ex at the cineplex was awkward. Showing up the personal dramas, as well as the global ones, and from the very talented pen of Tony Grounds.

Downton Abbey ITV1, 9pm Wasn’t last week a series-opener corker? In the wake of that little drama everyone is still a bit shellshocked, and Robert is faced with a difficult decision. It’s not even whether or not Downton should get one of those newfangled wireless contraptions Lady Rose seems so keen on. It’s just a phase, woman!

Moone Boy Sky One, 7.30pm It’s the age-old comic tale of one boy and his imaginary friend growing up in Ireland. Bless them both. This week Martin wants a new games console, which means getting a job so that he can earn money to pay for it. Sure Sean’s got some cunning ideas as to how to raise the dosh. They’ll be reasonable, right?
