DeWitt Schools trict with a deficit of about $2.3 million next school year, school officials said. But the district can reduce that shortfall to about $1.62 million by using one-time federal monies set aside to preserve teaching positions. Officials have proposed cutting 12.3 full-time teaching positions, including four in the high school, 2.3 in the junior high and 1.5 at the kindergarten level. ing and one afternoon bus run and to reduce building supply costs by 10 percent. The new budget would be balanced with $378,000 from the district’s fund reserves, leaving it with a fund balance of about $1.6 million, or about 7 percent of the operating budget. The state budget picture is still unclear, and school officials will revise the budget as needed, he said. A state Senate committee has proposed cutting aid to school districts by an additional $170 per student, significantly less than the governor has proposed. But the House proposal calls for an additional reduction of $285 per pupil. “We’re just trying to do the best we can with a really bad budget picture at the state level,” Spagnuolo said.
