n the fall semester of 2014, the library started hosting
a series of informal talks by faculty from across the University called Lunch and Learn at Langsdale. These talks were coordinated by Mike Kiel, a reference and instruction librarian. Mike observed at other campus events that faculty weren’t always aware of projects other schools at UB were working on. This inspired him to have the library host Lunch and Learn events in their new space in the Learning Commons. “As we become more digital it’s important that the library is viewed as a place where people collaborate and learn from each other,” said Mike Kiel.

The fall series showcased the work of three faculty members, who each presented in a different month. The featured speakers could talk about their current scholarship, pitch an idea they are interested in exploring, or present a project that was worked on in collaboration with students. In September, the first Lunch and Learn at Langsdale featured Assistant Professor Sujan Shrestha from the Division of Science, Information Arts and Technologies. He presented his research into how games make people feel and some of Professor Shrestha’s students shared their independent study projects. In October, Dr. Sharon Glazer, Professor in the Division of Applied Behavioral Sciences presented on her own research, which examines cross-cultural feelings about stress and how people work together in the workplace. Dr. Carol Molinari, Associate Professor in the School of Health and Human Services, presented in November. Dr. Molinari discussed the usefulness of mindful meditation for students in online courses, specifically presenting on a structured meditation exercise used for online courses in the University of Baltimore’s Healthcare Management program. There will be a spring Lunch and Learn at Langsdale series featuring three more faculty from different schools within UB. All Lunch and Learn sessions are free and open to the public.
