WESLEY DAVID SCOTT | SUCCESS STORY Wesley David Scott is a singer-songwriter who moved to Vancouver just over two years ago in the hopes of making a name for himself in the music industry. But as many creative endeavors go, he hit a snag. Then he found Langara Continuing Studies. Wesley’s indie-rock solo project, Zulu Panda, although acclaimed for its mix of heartland rock and grunge coupled with a pop sensibility, needed a kick-start. “I was at a point with my music where I didn’t know what to do to get to the next level. I was struggling with writing, playing shows without confidence and bumbling through the business side of things. I wanted more from my music and from myself.” In the fall of 2013, he enrolled in the Langara CS Singer-Songwriter program and was able to learn what he needed to push forward: the critical thinking to craft and develop a song, the performance skills to confidently take the stage, the technical know-how to record a proper demo, and the basics of music theory and business. Wesley credits the instructors – all industry professionals – as a key strength of the program, citing their wealth of knowledge, broad experience, approachability, and practical teachings as invaluable to the overall success of the students. Moreover, with small class sizes, a creative and open learning environment, and a goal-oriented curriculum, he was able to complete the program with recordings of his hard work. “This program was a needed stepping stone for me and was invaluable in the knowledge and confidence it gave me. I am regularly surprised at how much I’ve accomplished since finishing – gigs, touring, recording, networking, you name it,” he shared. “I’ve still got a long way to go though and it’s up to me to figure out how to succeed, but taking this program was one of the best decisions of my life.”

BUSINESS

PHOTO BY GREG BLUE | CS PHOTOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR

“The program gave me a great business foundation and showed me the steps I needed to take.”

DUSHAN KARUNASENA | SUCCESS STORY At an early age, Dushan Karunasena knew he wanted to start his own business. The native Sri Lankan – who earned a degree in agriculture – grew up interested in everything from architecture and painting to décor and fashion. Eventually, the well-travelled designer’s creative pursuits led him to Canada where his dream to be his own boss trumped the intimidating challenges of running his own business. Among other things, Dushan was particularly skilled at floral design and aspired to start a floral boutique where he could create elegant and modern displays. Unfortunately, his first attempt at this business idea struggled. Then he found the Self-Employment program at Langara Continuing Studies and what he learned turned his business around. “The program gave me a great business foundation and showed me the steps I needed to take. The marketing instruction helped me focus my business’ direction and showed me that my creative work would be best suited for the wedding and event industry,” he said.

Dushan rebranded his business, naming it Dushan Flowers, and consulted with his instructors on how to develop strong relationships and valuable business connections within the wedding industry. In subsequent years, Dushan Flowers earned award nominations, television and magazine features, and most importantly, substantial growth in the business.

REAL ESTATE CONSTRUCTION, DEVELOPMENT, AND INVESTING

Dushan’s passion and creativity still drives his work, something his business – and his clients – surely benefit from. “I get a great sense of satisfaction hearing reviews from my brides and grooms on how my floral displays played a huge role in making their wedding day perfect.”

SELF-EMPLOYMENT

The value of his Continuing Studies experience at Langara isn’t lost on Dushan either, “I knew I needed some help. The Self-Employment program gave me the skills, support, connections, and confidence I needed to achieve my dream.”

The new articulation agreement between Langara College and Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is welcome news as it offers students more opportunity and flexibility. It allows students in the Professional Accounting and Advanced Accounting programs to receive transfer credit towards TRU’s Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), creating a seamless pathway towards their Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. To qualify for the CPA Professional Education Program, students must have a degree, but traditionally, Continuing Studies courses are not transferable to degree or diploma programs. With this agreement, students can now transfer their courses to TRU for credit upon completion of the CS accounting programs.

Students can receive up to 33 credits from Langara CS’s Professional Accounting program and up to 18 credits from the Advanced Accounting program towards TRU’s Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), totaling up to 51 credits that can be applied towards their degree – almost half of the 120 credits needed for degree completion. Moreover, Thompson Rivers conveniently offers online and distanceed courses via their Open Learning Division, allowing students to take courses remotely. Natalie Lai, program coordinator for Langara CS accounting programs is thrilled at the opportunity this articulation agreement offers students. “It positions Langara as a viable option for students who want to pursue their professional accounting designation but need the courses to fit their busy schedules. It’s a perfect fit for students who have full-time jobs or families and can’t step away from their work for four years to study full-time. With this agreement, they have an opportunity to work and still pursue their CPA designation.”

- Dr. Clinton Lee

Educational Travel DR. CLINTON LEE | INSTRUCTOR It’s no surprise why Dr. Clinton Lee is leading the upcoming 2016 Luxury Wine Tour in Bordeaux. As a respected international wine educator, expert, and judge, Clinton has attained the highest qualifications from the world’s leading provider of wine education, the Wine Spirit and Education Trust. Yet beyond his many accolades and accomplishments – which includes everything from having a doctorate in business administration to being a French wine scholar – Clinton remains inspired to learn more about the culture, tradition, and provenance of wine, and to share that knowledge with others.

“On each and every single occasion we open a bottle of wine, we are witnesses to the embodiment of history, geography, and culture of that particular time, that precise moment. In that unique instant, we are time travellers,” he says. When asked about his involvement with Langara Continuing Studies, he says: “I have always felt that Langara has established a reputation for being one of the institutions that treasures continuing education. The courses are diverse and professional, and reach out to that part of society who wants to learn.” Blending his abilities as an educator with his passion for the region itself has helped Clinton tailor an exciting Bordeaux wine tour. “Whenever, I share my breathtaking experiences of Bordeaux with others, my eyes glisten and sparkle, and my voice booms with enthusiasm. Bordeaux’s reputation is well-deserved.” Sounds like the perfect pairing.

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Computer Technology JIM O’LEARY | INSTRUCTOR Geographic Information System (GIS) is an uncommon academic discipline but its ubiquity in today’s techrich society makes it an ever-growing field. GIS is critical to common applications like Bing and Google Maps. It allows us to manage, interpret, store, capture, and visualize data - particularly geographic information - and lets us interact with it. Instructor Jim O’Leary understands its importance having taught computer courses since 1999 and working as the spatial analyst with the Geographic Information System department at the City of Vancouver. As GIS develops new avenues of scientific discovery and practical applications, Jim, and fellow instructor Rick Davidson, see great potential in the discipline and are thrilled to be launching the new GIS certificate program at Langara Continuing Studies.

“GIS is a huge field that touches many other disciplines and is constantly evolving. It is an exciting challenge for me to stay on the leading edge of GIS, and in doing so, expand my own understanding of its many facets,” Jim says. Previously, GIS was a technology of limited usage due to the high cost of the software. The new GIS program at Langara will utilize QGIS, an open source software that is high quality, free, and available to anyone. As Jim points out, “with open source software now available, there will be a high demand for those who have the background and technical expertise in GIS to benefit from the software. There’s opportunity. I’m excited about launching our new program.”

Sustainable Communities XYLA GREY | SUCCESS STORY When Xyla Grey looks at the environment, the land artist and CS alum sees a natural canvas full of materials, inspiration, and community. With a background in art and performance and a strong interest in bioremediation, Xyla was drawn to Eco Art, an art form that aims to educate and engage people about the maintenance of healthy, functional ecosystems using natural materials that don’t result in waste.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN SPRING 2016

GOOD BEGINNINGS: FAMILY CHILDCARE HORTICULTURAL THERAPY ORGANIC LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT PERMACULTURE

Xyla recently took Permaculture Design at Langara to broaden her knowledge of ecological systems, which enabled her to ground her artistic creativity within nature. She learned water-harvesting techniques, sustainable garden-design principles, and the different functions of plants and how they work together to build a resilient system. Since completing the course, Xyla has received a grant from Vancouver’s Greenest City Fund to create a community quilt using eco-printing techniques for Mount Pleasant Neighborhood House. She has also been hired to design and create small home gardens, and continues to offer workshops on topics such as rope-making, shelter-building and natural dyeing. As someone who works in the area of community building, Xyla appreciated that the course modeled how to create positive and inclusive shared spaces. “I highly recommend taking this course. It’s a really great network of amazing people,” she says. “This education has given me handson training and has allowed me to design functional gardens and ecosystems that I can bring to both my occupation and my eco-artwork.”

NICOLE EMILY MARCIA | SUCCESS STORY Nicole is a great believer in the therapeutic benefits of yoga. She is the founder and director of Fine Balance Yoga, a yoga therapist, and instructor with Langara’s Continuing Studies program. Over the last 11 years, she has dedicated her life to creating safe yoga spaces and courses that help students, yoga teachers, and other healthcare providers. In 1994, at the age of 21, Nicole endured a physical and sexual assault at the hands of a neighbour. The experience left her depleted and vulnerable. To cope, she turned to food, smoking, alcohol, and drugs. In 2001, she saw an interview of Madonna speaking highly about yoga, making her want to try it, and from the start, she found it therapeutic and life changing. She was transformed by the practice and became an advocate for the therapeutic benefits of yoga. Three years later, Nicole took her first yoga teacher training and in 2008 completed a Master of Arts Degree in Yoga Therapy at Lesley University in Boston, MA. Since 2004, she has been teaching therapeutic yoga classes and individual sessions to trauma survivors struggling with PTSD, addiction, depression, and anxiety. She established Fine Balance Yoga with the goal of supporting trauma survivors in developing healthy ways to self-regulate emotional and physical symptoms rather than addiction and self-harming behaviours. “The Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma, Resilience and Emotional Well-Being program at Langara has provided me so many unique opportunities to make a difference in peoples lives. The chance to bring therapeuticallybased yoga programming to a college of this caliber really elevates the way the work is seen in the world,” she says. “Being an instructor at Langara has been one of the most amazing opportunities I’ve ever been given.”
