he Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO) is a Nairobi-based trade body. As an association, KATO is responsible for the promotion and regulation of tours and safaris in Kenya. KATO also plays a role as an industry lobbying group able to speak directly to government on behalf of its members about important matters while liaising closely with other tourismrelated associations as well as the Kenya Tourist Board and Kenya Wildlife Service. KATO works hand in hand with these other tourism stakeholders to ensure that Kenya remains a safe and attractive destination for visitors. More importantly, the association is also charged with ensuring the highest possible standards among all its members. Accordingly, those planning to visit Kenya or those already in the country aiming to undertake a safari or some other excursion should seek out the KATO logo as a sign of reassurance. KATO’s membership is divided into seven categories. These are A to E for full members plus categories for associate
and affiliate members. A to E members are graded on size of turnover while all new members must spend one year as associates. Affiliated members are those not directly involved in arranging tours but linked with or working alongside KATO in some other way.
TAILOR-MADE KATO members, of which there are over 350, often specialise in different types of safaris and have a close association with one or several inbound markets where certain language skills can be an advantage. Furthermore, most provide tailor-made itineraries for clients; crafting a safari to meet specific visitor requirements. The larger members, however, tend to offer both bespoke safaris and prearranged fixed scheduled itineraries. These can be excellent value for money. All visitors can be certain, however, that there is KATO member dedicated to providing the perfect safari or other holiday option and that they are in safe and experienced hands.
