Ecotourism Kenya continues to foster relationships with both the private and public sector to ensure that the culture of responsibility is entrenched in the tourism sector. We are pleased that our members listed in this guide are working towards building these relationships so that the beauty of our visitors’ experience today can be available tomorrow for others to enjoy. We applaud the individual efforts being made and present the potential traveller with a wide choice of travel partners and facilities to select from. FOREWORD It is my distinct pleasure and privilege to present the first edition of the Ecotourism Kenya Guide. It comes at the end of an eventful year punctuated by global financial upheaval and unpredictable climate change. Many of these challenges were weathered better by those who had taken the time to invest in innovative resource management and we are proud to list many of them in this new Guide. The Guide was a natural progression and effective complement to the Green Directory which continues circulation as a separate publication. We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles – Jimmy Carter PROMOTING RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL As Ecotourism Kenya continues to foster effective interpretation of environmental, cultural and resource management values we welcome you to visit and experience the positive difference that sustainable tourism makes. See you soon! Adam Jillo Chairman Ecotourism Kenya 3 Promoting responsible tourism in Kenya and beyond The popularity of responsible tourism is growing worldwide and is becoming embedded in Kenya. As an association, Ecotourism Kenya (EK) runs a voluntary Eco-rating scheme that aims to promote responsible and sustainable environmental and socio-economic practices in the tourism industry. However, plans are underway to broaden the scheme to cover tour operators and was launched at the National Conference in November 2009. The Scheme will build on past successes and will benefit from the many lessons learned over the 10 years in which the Certification Scheme, which has gold, silver and bronze levels, has been running. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD Additional benefits and input will come from EK’s direct involvement in the Steering Committee that has developed the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC). The aim is to develop an international standard that allows schemes to be compared with one another using set criteria. Overall, this scheme will work to improve the quality of responsible tourism practices worldwide. The involvement of EK in drawing up these criteria is testament to the unique qualities of the Eco-rating Scheme as a home-grown scheme, sensitive and responsive to the local needs of the tourism sector. It is also a Scheme that draws its strength from having been developed by industry players. This involvement is key as it forms the basis for true development of responsible tourism practices that can survive beyond the hype of the ‘green revolution’. EK encourages practices that improve the quality of the tourism industry as a whole and those that contribute positively to economic empowerment of local communities. Rather than focus on specific areas or well-established tourist circuits, these practices are being promoted country-wide through the Regional Reach programme. To this end, EK has eight regional representative centres in which it regularly holds information and training workshops. INTRODUCTION The aim of the Scheme is to promote and increase awareness of environmentally and socially sound business practices, to conserve the natural resource base on which tourism depends and to improve the overall standards of the tourism industry. Currently, the Scheme only covers accommodation facilities and does not include tour operators and others. By forming strategic partnerships with the Oslobased Basecamp Foundation, the Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), the Ford Foundation, The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), Kenya Tourist Board (KTB), the UN Development Programme, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), local communities and other partners in the industry, EK has been able to further its community-based projects and awareness and advocacy campaigns to make tourism more responsible in Kenya. One key driving element that supports this agenda is membership to EK which ‘acts local and thinks global’. 5 BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP A growing number of tour operators and accommodation facilities are members of EK. Some have a long history with the society and were among its founder members. (Visit www. ecotourismkenya.org for more information and an updated list of members and rated facilities). Key benefits include: The Green Directory: Offers free listing for corporate and community based organisations (CBOs). This annual publication contains a catalogue of businesses that promote the use of green technologies through their goods and services. The directory is distributed by the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) at its international exhibitions and local roadshow events. Exhibitions and trade fairs: EK participates in trade fairs and events and uses the occasions to educate the public by highlighting the responsible tourism practices available in the market and the benefits to the industry and to the national economy. Member participation or contribution to the EK stands is possible by invitation from the Secretariat. Meetings and conferences: The biennual National Ecotourism Conference brings together local and international experts, members and the general public at an informative event. The 2009 conference was held in November. Regular updates are available on the website and circulated in the newsletters. INTRODUCTION Newsletters: Regular communication from the secretariat through a monthly e-newsletter and the quarterly print newsletter. Through this information exchange forum, members can showcase their activities and share best practice experiences. It provides updated information, tips and trends in ecotourism and responsible tourism practices both locally and internationally. The newsletters have wide distribution both locally and internationally beyond the EK membership. Subscription to the e-newsletter is available online via the EK website Members also receive discounted advertising opportunities for a presence within the newsletter. Eco-talks: This discussion forum deals with topical issues pertinent to ecotourism and sustainable tourism. Details are posted on the website and sent out in the monthly e-newsletters. The talks are offered free of charge and provide an excellent opportunity for members to benefit from experts in the industry. Website listing: Members are profiled on the EK website. Potential customers have access to the list and activities relevant to responsible tourism, sustainable practices and community support they are involved in. This is used to inform travellers of the options available to them when they visit Kenya. Use of the EK logo: All EK members can use the official logo in their promotional material to show they support sustainable tourism practices and subscribe to a responsible tourism code of conduct. Resource centre: The resource centre has a collection of books, reports, photographs, CDs and other publications relevant to ecotourism and is free for EK members. Non-members pay an access fee of KES 200 for daily access. A catalogue of available publications is posted on the website. Any company or individual that is interested in becoming a member of EK or finding out more about responsible tourism in Kenya can either visit www.ecotourismkenya.org, email info@ ecotourismkenya.org, or contact the Secretariat on +254 (0)20 272 4403. 7 Luxury right across the brand FAIRMONT THE NORFOLK, NAIROBI A landmark in the city since opening its doors in 1904, The Norfolk has welcomed royalty, statesmen and stars alike. MAS operates three modern 19-seat turboprop commuter aircraft and a 12-seat Grand Caravan turboprop. Arrivals and departures are from Terminal Three for general aviation. Flying from a separate terminal, MAS provides check-in services that are fast and free of hassle. For all MAS passengers there is a private first-class departure lounge with convenient access to waiting aircraft. The four aircraft operate daily services from Mombasa, Diani Beach and Malindi to Amboseli, Masai Mara and, on request, to Tsavo. In addition, flights operate seasonally to Samburu and Lake Nakuru. The MAS aircraft may also be chartered by prior arrangement. TREND Most of the company’s passenger traffic is generated by the big international tour operators. But there is a growing trend towards independently minded travellers booking flights on the company’s own website. Safari packages can also be arranged with MAS via the web. All the aircraft are professionally crewed and MAS operates training and flight safety programmes. Aircraft are selected for their good safety record and for their ability to use the bush airstrips that are a common feature of Kenya’s game parks. MAS has its own approved maintenance team which also undertakes third-party work. 10 Comfort, style and a real African experience Pollmans Tours & Safaris holds a strong position as one of East Africa’s leading and most respected tour operators and destination management companies, with a strong environmental focus and own inhouse environmental policy Pollmans is part of the ARP Group, which also embraces Ranger Safaris (Tanzania) and Alpha Travel (UK). Tortilis Camp boasts the most breathtaking and unrivalled views of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. The entire lodge is run on solar power in an area of wilderness where guests will not encounter another car or tourist other than those staying at Tassia. The 17 luxuriously designed tents (including one family house with two en-suite bedrooms and a private seating/dining area), are located in a grove of verdant flattopped acacia trees (acacia tortilis), after which the camp is named. The structure of the lodge is built entirely from low impact local materials. No trees have been cut down and the whole project has been constructed with conservation and the preservation of the environment in mind. The structure is organic and seems to be a natural extension to the ground on which it is built. The lodge is small and unique – offering five double bedrooms and one twin. During their stay, guests are privy to fantastic game drives, bush walks, mountains climbing, visits to a Maasai village, botanical walks and photographic workshops. The notorious Amboseli elephants can also be watched from the privacy of the Tortilis Camp bar and dining room, which both overlook a waterhole frequented by various species of wildlife. As well as a swimming pool, Tortilis Camp offers game drives, guided bush walks, bush breakfasts, sundowners, Maasai cultural visits and has its own massage and beauty treatment facility. There is also the option of camel safaris and fly-fishing which provide another exciting dimension to any stay at Tassia. Tortilis supplies the local community with unlimited access to clean drinking water, and the staff operate a provisions shop for local people. Miles from anywhere, it has an almost mythical status and, it’s thought, a greater density of mammals than any other Tanzanian reserve. Fundu Lagoon is located off the west coast of Pemba Island. Rivers groan with hippopotamus and crocodiles, and massed on the plains are the last great herds of buffalo in East Africa, up to 1000 head. Katavi is as dramatic as anywhere. Almost everywhere guests look there’s something grazing, bellowing, fighting, mating, hunting. This is the place for the wildlife connoisseur, and the traveller who thinks the African bush can offer up no more surprises. Nomad Tanzania is fully committed to improving its environmental awareness and responsibilities. The company is constantly striving to reduce its carbon footprint, both through design and in-camp logistics as well as travel philosophy and staff training programmes. For example, wherever possible guests are encouraged to walk and the camp is fully packed away in the green season in order to regenerate the area. Fundu Lagoon’s fully equipped dive centre with onsite PADI dive instructors has a fleet of boats catering for a diverse range of water sports and activities. The mountains soar to 2,400 metres above the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, which at 670 km long and 48 km wide, is a veritable inland sea. The nearest road is almost 100 km away, and that is the most minor of tracks. At a massive 50,000 sq km, the Selous Game Reserve is wilderness on a huge scale and the largest in Africa. And although it’s a seemingly infinite place, it has great subtlety. The slopes of the Mahale Mountains rise behind camp, home to the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees. Within hiking distance is a group of 60. Every day guests can venture out into this deep and magical forest to observe them, as they groom, wrestle and forage across the leafy floor. Greystoke Mahale is built with no concrete and uses solar as the main source of electricity. As with all Nomad Camps, Greystoke Mahale has reduced its use of firewood and while recycling is in its infancy in Tanzania, glass and plastic bottles are sent to be re-used by locals. Also all soaps and shampoos used by guests are biodegradable. Actively promoting responsible chimp-viewing rules, Greystoke Mahale is the first camp to introduce mask wearing. All masks are made of recycled dhow wood or sustainable soft woods which are locally sourced. Set on a wide curve of the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers Selous has been a well-loved hub for safari buffs since the late 1980s when camp founder Richard Bonham first discovered this place on one of his famed portered walking safaris.
